thanks neuro - so how annoying that all the baby books you get in this country just assume everyone is caucasian - gosh I'm on a bit of a anti-racist rant today, aren't I?!!

mixedmama · 24/09/2007 14:10

I read the other day (albeit on this site so not reliable) that Asian people are also Caucasian as the term is to do with facial structure rather than ethnicity etc.... altho that is the first time I had heard that and found it interesting.

mimicakey · 24/09/2007 14:14

That is interesting mixedmama - I've always wondered what it means exactly! (But not enough that I could be bothered to look in the dictionary clearly!)

mixedmama · 24/09/2007 14:16

Well i dont know that it is true, as you would think that would be common knowledge if it were true.

mimicakey · 24/09/2007 14:20

ok, I've looked it up

Anthropology. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of one of the traditional racial divisions of humankind, marked by fair to dark skin, straight to tightly curled hair, and light to very dark eyes, and originally inhabiting Europe, parts of North Africa, western Asia, and India: no longer in technical use. (From dictionary.com)

skidaddle · 24/09/2007 14:22

well that's a very helpful definition - is there anyone who's NOT caucasian?!!! Just as well it's no longer in use, eh?

mixedmama · 24/09/2007 14:25

Problem is that it is still in use, i see it on forms and stuff all the time and we all just used it.... does sound rather archaic tho.

skidaddle · 24/09/2007 14:26

sorry mimicakey - that sounded like I was having a go at you! Just meant that the definition seems a bit meaningless

skidaddle · 24/09/2007 14:26

I always associate it with Nazi Germany but don't know if that's just me...

Neuro · 24/09/2007 14:27

Skidaddle - most baby books also assume there are two parents who are together. In my baby book there's just a little box to the side for single parents! Not very modern!

Well if you're Caucasian you are from a region in Eurasia, and Eurasia apparently is the biggest continent in the world and stretches from Europe across to err Asia! So you can be Russian/Turkish/French/Iranian to be caucasian. Is a big old area.

Hang on, technically, I'm not caucasian then if my ancestors are Norse?!

Hmmm. I"m confused!

mixedmama · 24/09/2007 14:28

I think it is a pretty ridiculous term. Thank god, i tick other.

Neuro · 24/09/2007 14:28

it explains it quite well in Wikipedia.

MamaMaiasaura · 24/09/2007 14:32

thanks for link Neuro

Came back with 30% blue 70% green. IS there a hair colour one??

mixedmama · 24/09/2007 14:33

ohhh would be interested in hair colour.

mimicakey · 24/09/2007 14:34

No worries skiddadle!

Nbg · 24/09/2007 14:36

Afternoon all.

Just a quickie. Has anyone been able to do anything to relieve the breathlessness?
Any sort of positions, sitting, standing, crouching lol.

I am sick to death of it now. Its really annoying.

Neuro · 24/09/2007 14:47

Just searching now for a hair colour thingy!

Nbg - i share your discomfort. I get it most in the evenings, which i've only just realised is almost directly linked with eating too much in one go. I have no answer for it, but i have done a lot more cycling recently so i think i've felt better as altho the space for my lungs is shrinking, my lung capacity has got better.

Re: eating: I know 'they' say eat 5 or 6 small meals a day instead of 3 usual ones, but how do you do that when you're at work?!!! But it should help in theory.

fifisworld · 24/09/2007 14:50

Id love to know how to relieve breathlessness as well NBG.
When i get to the top of the stairs ive got to sit down it can get quite bad.
Ive also just come back from my 28 week appointment and the mw reckons that my baby could be 3lb already and that he will be big.
Does anyone know how acurate the mw's normally are on this?
She told me last time that ds would be about 7 1/2 lb and he was only 6lb5 at 42 weeks????

MamaMaiasaura · 24/09/2007 14:51

I have just munched 2 jam doughnuts. There is one left (was for ds).. it is calling for me to eat it and am trying to resist .. arrgghh. They taste sooooo gooooood.

mixedmama · 24/09/2007 14:56

Not sure they get it very right to be honest.... at my 38 week appointment they were like "ohhh at least 8 lb" - he was 7.5.

Neuro · 24/09/2007 15:00

Nope, can't find any hair predictor thingies

MamaMaiasaura · 24/09/2007 15:00

fifi - it is diff to tell at this stqage i think. Although they said ds1 was a big one. Had his at 38 weeks and he was 8lb 12. Apparantly would have been 10lb 12 if gone for 40 weeks. THey think this one is likely to be big too so having extra scans.

skidaddle · 24/09/2007 15:01

neuro - I know, that must so irritating all the books assuming parents are always a (heterosexual) couple. Plus I'm sure the little side box about single mothers does not particularly consider those women who took a deliberate decision to become single mothers like you..

awen - eat it!

hair colour - don't think there could be one on hair colour because there are so many factors that contribute to hair colour whereas eye colour is relatively straightforward but I might be wrong

Nbg - best position for me is to lean forwards with hands or elbows on a table and bum sticking out. This is to get breath back after breathlessness though - don't know if there is much you can do to stop it happening in the first place - lie in bed all day eating jam doughnuts, mmm now that sounds nice

MamaMaiasaura · 24/09/2007 15:01

thanks for looking neuro - i couldnt find any either. I am a red head and the only one in family since grandad. DP has black hair and darker skin.

skidaddle · 24/09/2007 15:03

fifi I would imagine it is very early days to say now how big your baby will be at birth because their growth rate could accelerate or slow down and 3lb is still tiny. However, I don;t actualy know anything about it!
