Hello all,

So much goin on since I was last on here...

Iris - well small world! We ended up in Portland during the Trafalgar 200 celebrations a couple of years ago as we weren't shiny and new enough to be allowed into Portsmouth dockyard. It was really sad being somewhere so abandoned looking, but hopefully the Olympic sailing will lead to some improvements! By the way - I didn't think you could get accurate weights from scans? Perhaps they will be wrong?

Sparkly - what a nightmare for you, but at least they are looking after you and the baby even if it is all horrid!

Ara - funny your dad mentioning security etc. As first timers DH and I are just in the middle of doing all the making wills, getting better life insurance etc and it is all just a little bit morbid (although I am feeling a teeny bit smug about being so grown up and responsible ).

By the way - with all the discussion about births (starting to look really quite soon...) I have been reading a book called "Birth, a history", which I thought would be a really interesting look at different cultural practices (well that's what it says on the jacket) but turns out to be a massive compilation about institutionalised horror stories mostly from Europe and the US over the last 200 years or so. I have to say it has made me feel damn grateful I wasn't having a baby 40 years ago!!! Can anyone recommend something useful about childbirth itself? I am a real bookworm and definitely a "forewarned is forearmed" type!

And on to the name debate... We have reached a point of agreement about a girl's name but really can't agree about boys names, and the real problem is that neither of us has a strong view at all about boys names; we both have a few we quite like but not one we love, and neither of us is at all keen on the others' suggestions. Fingers crossed for a girl then

Incidentally - I haven't had any braxton-hicks. Is this unusual?

I am glad to know I am not the only one who keeps getting people commenting on their size. What I particularly loved was the number of people at work who said on my return from 2 1/2 weeks' leave "well, your bump's grown hasn't it?". What do you say to that? Yes - of course it has grown. I'm pregnant - did you think it was going to start getting smaller. People are also incredibly nosy. "Oh - a plum - are you terribly constipated?" No - I am eating a plum because they are in season. And if I was constipated I would not be discussing it with you in the kitchen at work anyway!! Aaargh. I really wish they would all go away.

I think I might be a bit hormonal though. I shouted at DH and burst into tears the other night because I picked the car seat up and put it in the cupboard under the stairs and he moved it round to make more space. Not exactly domestic warfare but for some reason I decided that this was a sign he thinks I am utterly incompetent in all areas of life and am going to be a useless mother. One of my finer moments of rationality I think you will all agree!!

And finally - Loopy - good luck with the move - how exciting! Will you be looked after by the RD&E now?

FCH · 29/08/2007 15:05

And sorry that's so long...

choudru · 29/08/2007 15:38

Hello lovely ladies - what a lot of chatting to catch up on! Have had a busy day and just sat down with a cuppa to put feet up and read the latest. Is like reading a good magazine

I have no chance of addressing all the points that I want to address because I can barely remember who said what.

Briefly:

  1. Welcome back little - I will e-mail you I promise. Was supposed to do it weeks ago!
  2. RG - your sister sounds like one of those people who get annoyed by other people's happiness. Ignore her - she obviously said those things to wind you up. Sisters can be funny things.
  3. Iris - FOUR AND A HALF POUNDS!!!! [shock}
  4. Sparkly - good luck with the next few days/weeks. My waters broke this time last pregnancy so I'm pretty chuffed at the mo that nothing untoward has happened so far!
  5. I quite like the name Loki Sounds well cute.
  6. Loopy - good luck with move!
  7. TIP: Go to Lloyds pharmacy and ask them about the Emma's diary mum-to-be packs. Jus picked one up - it contains the usual leaflets, a sample of cocoa butter for stretch marks, a sample washing powder, and best of all A BOX OF 30 EQUAZEN OMEGA OIL CAPSULES!!! They are not cheap so get a free box while you can.
  8. Also asked them about the TENS machine they are selling for £15 but they said it was different to the one that pregnant women use Thought it was too good to be true. Can anyone who has used a TENS machine let me know what they thought of it please? My sis used one but said it made no difference but I'd like some more opinions.
  9. Am getting rib ache as well - only on right side but it kills.

Other than that I had a busy bank hol. Friends came to stay plus did a henna stall for a pub charity event for NSPCC. Was fun but tiring. Mum and sis coming to stay tomorrow so that should be fun.

Have picked up moses basket and electric breast pmup from my sister in law so I pretty much have myself 99% organised for this baby whenever she decides to arrive Just need to order a new mattress for moses basket. Feel so mentally relaxed now - quite the opposite of last time!

Better go - wedding planner coming to see me at 4pm to talk about working together...

choudru · 29/08/2007 15:42

FCH - I haven't had any BH either.

Have had milk leakage in shower though.

About sizes of bumps - don't take any notice of people commenting on the size - it might just be that you have less or more amniotic fluid that the next pregnant woman. I was huge with DS but it was all fluid!

Have put on about 16lbs but then I am probably carrying half a stone from DS as well.

really going now.

Pixiefish · 29/08/2007 16:02

Before you pay to hire a tens machine check with your midwives- I had mine free last time. Midwives round here have a few and will lend them to their ladies- all depends who asks first and when they get them back though but worth asking

sparklygothkat · 29/08/2007 17:24

Yes its because of the results from the GTT. Tested after lunch and was 6.8.

Snapped at MIL today, she said I shouldn't look after misdee's girls, I snapped that I hadn't had them for a week, and they are only coming to play with my girls. I think I upset her.... Dh managed to smooth it over tho, saying I am snappy and emotional. My sister said that you have a hormone rush between 28-30 weeks which makes you snappy, so can blame the pregnancy..

Was in Sainburys today and carrying a full basket. Was waiting for a hot chicken from the deli. and one of the staff asked me if I needed a trolley, I delined saying I was only getting a chicken and then going. She then asked if I was ok carrying the basket.. or if I needed help. I must have a huge bump to be asked that!! lol!

We have DH's grandad's funeral next week, which I am not looking forward to, but DH's dad has said I can't have the baby yet, because he wants to see my huge bump when he comes up for the funeral..

littleoldme · 29/08/2007 19:03

Loopy - sorry you are so uncomfortable. I think it would be nice to pg in space c'os then you'd be weightless.

Chourdu - glad to hear you are so prepared. Sounds like the henna business is coming along nicely. Look forward to the e-mail.

RG - Sounds like you need to wind your sister up by being throughly happy and positive. Miserable people hate that.

I've put on two stone I can feel my non bumpy bits getting bigger. Time to lay off the lard - but it's so good...

On the plus side Supernanny starts againg tonight.

RGPargy · 29/08/2007 20:19

ooo yes am watching Supernanny now!!! That poor lady who lost her child!!

As for my sister, yes i think she has always been jealous of whatever happiness i have had, even to the extent where i was laughing with her once and then she suddenly said "hasn't your face got a lot of wrinkles?!". Needless to say i was very and also quite Cheek of it!

I've got my GTT next Weds. Not looking forward to it, i have to say!

Have a good evening ladies!

Pixiefish · 29/08/2007 20:29

RG- my mum is a bit like that- thinks she can say whatever she wants with no consideration for my feelings- latest one was last week she said 'are you growing your hair' so i said i didn't know but I hadn't had time for a cut- then she says 'well it doesn't suit you like that or long- it suits you better short'
so i just said it was easier to manage longer

OP posts:
sparklygothkat · 29/08/2007 20:33

after dinner reading was 7.7 so slightly too high, only had chicken salad and bread

jetgirl · 29/08/2007 21:13

So why is it that when your pg people feel it's totally appropriate to comment on your size - not just bump but boobs as well I've found - or your dietary habits or anything remotely relating to your body. I mean, you lose enough modesty as it is giving birth do you really need people you don't even know making comments in the supermarket?! It drives me mad. I think we are all reaching that stage now where everybody else seems to think the pregnancy and any body issues relating to it is their business too.

Rant over.

Had some sad news yesterday. DH's Nan has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's but hopefully they've caught it relatively early so she can receive some treatment to help delay it.

Early night for me, I hope, DH was up at 5 this morning as he had to go to Bristol, and DD has her last few molars coming through so she's not sleeping too well. Just hoping tonight will be better.

iris66 · 30/08/2007 09:44

jetgirl - it's the bump patting/rubbing that drives me insane. Like my body has become public property I even hate it when my sister & mum do it now it's got me so wound up

Sparkly - What parameters have the hospital given you for your sugar? I have to be between 4.5 - 5.0 pre and < 8.0 post meal. I'm struggling as I hate being told what to do. I had an awful food day yesterday and was very busy. consequently my pre lunch was 3.2 (i was starving so pigged out) and post was 11.7 Hope you're doing better than that!! I really feel for people who have to do this all the time.

RGPargy · 30/08/2007 10:39

Morning everyone

Glad i'm not the only one with insensitive relatives!! Haven't had any touchy-feely bump people yet, with the exception of DP and i really love it when he has a feel.

Sounds like it's tough for you GD peeps! How do you test yourself? Is it finger pricking? I really hope my levels will be ok but i just really dont know! I eat such crap that they're bound to be way off the scale!

Cant wait for the weekend! I know it's only been four days but i'm so looking forward to not getting woken up by other people's alarms lol.

Right, gonna see if the hairdresser can fit me in for Saturday! I need a haircut and a colour!

FCH · 30/08/2007 11:06

Morning all!

RG - haircut - what a good idea. I keep forgetting to do anything about this but I now have really bad split ends. I am really looking forward to going on Mat leave when I am going to try a new colour and cut as I won't have to get all my hair into a bun for 8 months!!! So exciting!

By the way - nobody has mentionned GTT to me at all. Does everyone get these tests or is it only if you have some sort of indicators? (sorry for total ignorance here!)

Also about bump patters here - I hate being fondled by people (obviously not DH but that is a bit different!) at the best of times and can't bear them poking me. Grrrr...

Pixiefish · 30/08/2007 11:11

Also hate it when people want to see my bump- mind you I'ma bit shy about it this time for some weird reason- don't like the comments at all

RGPargy · 30/08/2007 11:44

Lovely, got a cut and colour booked for Wednesday next week (I've got the day off for my GTT ). My normal hairdresser has left so i now have to try and explain what i normally have to someone new - i'm dreading it!!

FCH - There are a few pointers which make you more susceptable (sp?) to GD. I dont know what all of them are but i know that i tick too categories - i am over 35 and i'm overweight. Not sure of the other categories tho. Just think yourself lucky you're not having a GTT!!

Oh i've just remembered that MIL pats my bump too, which i do feel a bit uncomfortable with, but i think that's because i am a bit funny with my tummy....

Fingerbobs · 30/08/2007 11:50

Hi all, haven't been on for ages, sorry. FCH, I think you only do the GTT thing if your random blood glucose test, which should be done at 12 weeks (or booking) and about 28 weeks shows up with high levels.
I went to the consultant yesterday about placenta previa - mine was completely covering my cervix at 22 wks; I won't get another scan until 36 weeks and until then 'if you're going to bleed you're going to bleed'. So I have to get my head round having a c-section, which was the opposite of what I wanted - but then if it's moved at 36 weeks, I can go back to a homebirth, so I'm planning for two opposite things at the moment, it's a bit weird, to be honest (plus of course worrying that I'm going to wake up in a pool of blood, which is a tiny bit stressful). Ho hum. Apart from that both baby and I appear to be boringly healthy, and I obviously have such a 'don't even think about it' look that no-one has ever dared to put their hands on my bump without being asked or asking first!
Hope everyone else is feeling ok - the third trimester at last (I'm due at the end of November).

sarahloumadam · 30/08/2007 11:57

Must admit that I must have a prickly aura because not many have ventured to touch my bump! On the rare occassions that they do I feel v.protective and end up rubbing my tummy for ages! I suppose that I will feel the same way when people swoop and pick my baby up but surely they won't be so rude ?

Got midwife visit today and there were traces of glucose last time in my sample so have been v.good today but having complete mental block re producing a sample! Everytime I go to do it my bladder clamps shut!

Very fed-up with work now, roll on half-term!

sparklygothkat · 30/08/2007 12:31

my parameters have to be

kekouan · 30/08/2007 13:00

Hi everyone.
Sorry to barge in... bit of a newbie here. Been lurking for a while, but thought it was about time I said hello. Due November 21st, so 28+1 at the moment.

Anyway, just though I'd introduce myself!

Kekouan x

RGPargy · 30/08/2007 14:38

Hello and welcome Kekouan!

I'll add you to our list - do you know what you're having? (other than a baby of course )

Fingerbobs - re GTT i dont think that's right because i was never told of any high glucose levels and was told i would have to have a GTT from the start. Perhaps it's different in your area....

mrsjetson · 30/08/2007 15:04

Welcome Kekouan!

Well it looks as if I might be a little bit early - like 9wks adn 6 days TOO BLOODY EARLY!!

I have the midwife coming over to 'have a look'! SHIT.

Fingerbobs · 30/08/2007 15:28

Rg, you're much more likely to be right than me! I've never had anyone say anything about GTT so I just assumed that it would be related to the blood glucose thingie - please excuse total ignorance...

littleoldme · 30/08/2007 15:29

Arghh... Mrs J!! Got everything crossed for you. ( no pun intended )

Kekouan - welcome to the thread. We're a talkative bunch.

Fingerbobs FCH - no one has even mentioned GTT to me. In fact , I'm not even sure what it is .

Here's some useful info: if you don't pay for prescriptions and know what you need you can just go and ask for at at the chemist with out a pres. It's to save docs time with minor ailments. Courtesy of this system I know have a new supply of canesten (again) and a handy hand bag size bottle of gaviscon. Not all chemists do it but I know Lloyds do.

RGPargy · 30/08/2007 15:34

MrsJ - AAAGGGHHHH!!!!!! Good luck!! Keep us posted!!!
