Expecting twins in 2020?

Passionfruit20 · 16/10/2019 07:37

Is anyone else expecting twins (or more!) in 2020? I just found out I am. They’ll be our first. Technically due in April, although reality means probably March. Would love to share with other mums in the same situation as I’m now reading a whole new set of baby books and articles!

Mine was a c section so about as far from a home birth as it could have been, but even though it was 34 weeks with low expected birth rates it was still a positive experience. Happy to elaborate if you end up going for a section.

Providing twin 1 is head down they will probably suggest a vaginal delivery but I understand you are completely within your rights to opt for a section.

I believe (although am not certain) that delivery would be in theatre even if vaginal just in case, but you are still able to choose things like low lighting/music etc.

If it's suspected the twins will need neonatal then you will have two teams of neo doctors and nurses in the room, one for each baby. It's a lot of people, but they were all behind me so I wasn't really aware of them.

twinmum2017 · 07/11/2019 22:00

*low expected birth weights!!

SleepingStandingUp · 07/11/2019 22:02

See if you have a specialist twins midwife Passion, we do and she runs info sessions.
Here vaginal delivery isn't in theatre and NICU attend regardless so def varies from place to place.

I opting for C Sec but they're happy to let me go Vaginal is babies are positioned right at 32 weeks

SleepingStandingUp · 07/11/2019 22:08

@MrsEGthansk, I picked the date so def not superstitious here either

@Jaxx14 they're the lowest risk twisn to have, two placentas is good. Thry CAN be identical if the egg split really early but it's more likely they're non

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 08/11/2019 04:33

Congrats @Jaxx14 ! I found out about the same stage as you and was pretty anxious for the first trimester. We didn't tell anyone IRL till after the 12 week scan. As pp said though, Di-Di are the most straightforward type of twins. Mine are the same, boy/girl - I'm 29 weeks now.

I second the advice to sleep while you can! I haven't managed a full night's sleep in months between needing to pee, aches & pains, restless legs ... 🤦🏻‍♀️ and as for sex, well, the mind is willing but the flesh is weak!

@twinmum2017 no advice from me as I'm opting for a section too but I'm sure the hospital will try to make it as relaxed as possible. It might be good to read up on C-section though in case position of your twins makes a vaginal birth dangerous.

@SleepingStandingUp I love your choice of birth date!

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 08/11/2019 04:34

Sorry, that bit about birth should have been to @Passionfruit20

MrsEG · 08/11/2019 05:39

@Passionfruit20 Have you met with your consultant or twin midwife yet? They’ll be able to talk you through all of that. But even then, as others have said the birth depends on the position of the twins, amongst other things - so it all remains a bit of an unknown! At my 20 week scan both babies were head down which we were all delighted about as that means you can go for vaginal birth, then at 24 weeks twin 1 who is the presenting twin has flipped breech. So who knows! I was told they can keep turning and moving and they tend to see where babies are lying around 28-30 weeks before they start making any ‘real’ birthing plans. But that could just be for me, my pathway etc - I’m having DCDA twins and, touch wood, all has been really straightforward so far!

Passionfruit20 · 08/11/2019 19:30

Thanks so much everyone for the birth info! We haven’t met our consultant yet, and when we met the twin midwife yesterday for the first time she said “I don’t talk to you about delivery, the consultant will do that at 20 weeks” so I think I just felt a bit cast adrift because I thought she would answer some questions! Really appreciate your experiences - especially knowing you couldn’t see all those people @twinmum2017 ! I had heard there could be loads of people, and didn’t really want to give birth in front of a huge, watching audience! At least if maybe I can’t see them that makes it better 😂

I'm due my twins 14th of march but will have a section at 37 weeks. I'm having a boy and a girl. Its dragging in for me 😂

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 09/11/2019 09:49

Ugh, I feel like the wheels are finally coming off with this twin pregnancy malarkey. 29+2 today, bump has grown overnight and everything hurts. My back, my abs, even getting shooting pains into my vagina if I move a certain way. I've been in bed all morning while DH runs around with our toddler. Now on the sofa but energy levels crazy low. Not sure how I'm going to manage another 8 weeks Shock

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2019 00:29

Hope your weekend has let you rest a bit, how are you feeling @lifesnotaspectatorsport

twinmum2017 · 11/11/2019 06:13

Hope you're okay @nopenotplaying

NinaVictoria · 11/11/2019 07:23

Found out last week that I am expecting twins, same placenta but at the minute the doctor is unsure if they are in separate sacs or not! Going back for a scan later this week to confirm hopefully. I am still in a state of disbelief this is my double rainbow! But also worried as it is a high risk pregnancy, I am diabetic and a bigger girl as it is! If they're mo/mo twins I dont think I'll be able to relax ever!!

MrsEG · 11/11/2019 08:07

@Passionfruit20 I wouldn’t worry too much yet - even at my 24 week scan we didn’t discuss much on delivery as it’s so dependant on you, and how the babies are lying. And mine have changed positions at every single scan now 🙈 My understanding is you have your first proper discussion about it at 28 weeks - but still get your preferences and stuff sorted beforehand. I’d love to try VBAC but if it isn’t safe to do so I’m perfectly happy to have a CS instead. What will be will be!

@Havingtwinsat40 Congrats, I’m not far off - my DD is 23 Feb but will also likely have them early at 37 weeks! I’m having two boys :)

@lifesnotaspectatorsport I so get this!! I’m 25 weeks with PGP and I can’t remember the last time I slept all night, managed to go for a decent walk, felt comfortable on the sofa, etc etc... my physio tried to make me feel better telling me it’ll all go away once babies are here but that still seems so far off!

@NinaVictoria Congratulations:)

nopenotplaying · 11/11/2019 10:02

Babies arrived on Tuesday 34+3. Twin 1 (5lb6oz) came out screaming but then struggled to maintain sats and was taken to special care. He spent 2 days in there on oxygen of various levels and having phototherapy for jaundice. Twin 2 (3lb11oz) came out angry! She wasn't happy at all. Has not been on oxygen and has been with me the whole time. Both are now bf but initially had top ups via tube. Weights have dropped now to just under 5lb and 3.5lb. Twin 2 had a slight set back yesterday as she is currently having phototherapy. Im exhausted!

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2019 10:09

@nopenotplaying brilliant to hear they're out and in godo hands, and brilliant on the feeding. Any idea when you'll be home? X

MrsEG · 11/11/2019 10:24

@nopenotplaying Congratulations! Fingers crossed you’ll all be home soon x

Squiff70 · 11/11/2019 11:34

@nopenotplaying congratulations, they are perfect! Hope you're doing well Flowers

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 11/11/2019 14:40

@nopenotplaying Wow, congratulations!! They look perfect, I'd never have guessed from the photo that they are so early. Do you know what happened to slow twin 2's growth down?

twinmum2017 · 11/11/2019 14:56

Congratulations @nopenotplaying , they're absolutely gorgeous!

My smallest was 3lb5 also, and was tube fed for a week and a half so your girls doing brilliantly. Well they both are!

Phototherapy is so common for premmies, mine both had it. Xx

QueenOfThePumpkins · 11/11/2019 18:10

Congrats @Havingtwinsat40, you're due 2 days after me!

@NinaVictoria for three weeks mine were suspected mo/mo and it took the sonographer ages to confirm that they weren't! I'm sure you'll find the same, apparently they are very commonly misdiagnosed and it's very rare to actually have them. Even then, I spent time during those three weeks browsing a mo/mo Facebook group and there are so many success stories. Don't read stuff online, most of it is American anyway and they do things totally different over there.

Huge congratulations to you @nopenotplaying, what beautiful babies Smile
I hope all continues to go well for them and you.

Hope you're feeling a bit better today @lifesnotaspectatorsport! Just think how much all of this will be worth it Smile (She says feeling great at 22 weeks... haha)

QueenOfThePumpkins · 11/11/2019 18:14

UK MCMA Support Group was the Facebook page I joined @NinaVictoria. I didn't post as mine weren't confirmed, but I found it very reassuring to look through. Obviously there's some not so positive stuff on there too, but far more good than bad x

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2019 18:15

@QueenOfThePumpkins come back in 10 weeks when you can't walk😣😋😋😂😂😂

Yeah we had a few scans where they could see the membrane, it's really hard initially so hopefully on next scan they'll get it

QueenOfThePumpkins · 11/11/2019 18:40

I'm a really small person as well @sleepingstandingup, I reckon I'll be rolling around the place by Christmas like a snowball Grin

What sort of time do you ladies think you'll be finishing work? I'm going off at the earliest opportunity I think. I've only got a desk job, but my commute is 50 mins each way and it's only a matter of time before I won't fit behind the steering wheel anymore!

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2019 18:49

I'm 31+4, I don't work as my DS has additional needs but I have to say I think I'd be steuggling to do a full day atm with my SPD. I reckon I'd have booked from about 33 weeks but would be seriously contemplating if I could last
