i did a weighted squat/kegel combo in the gym and pissed myself. Luckily it was just me and an electrician fixing something in there. That and the tampon chat.. I need to step it up a gear! buying some of that perineal massage stuff and setting kegel timers on my phone. FML.

Karigan195 · 12/07/2019 12:36

Apparently regular orgasms help maintain the pelvic floor too. 😇

coffeeandgin26 · 12/07/2019 12:48

Hello! Long term lurker but first time poster . Haven't been on for a few days but missed the very sad news 💙.

I've just spotted that there is a Facebook group - how do I request to join please?

Farmmama · 12/07/2019 16:40

I had a forceps delivery with episiotomy and it really wasn’t that bad. I was quite scared about that before birth but it was fine. Baby’s heart rate dropped and he was a bit wedged so Doctor wanted him out pronto, so they did what had to be done there and then! It was obviously fairly sore for a few days (tip: buy a rubber ring to sit on after birth!) but it healed Really quickly. I was so scared of doing my first poo but it was actually fine Grin Could wear tampons etc no problem between pregnancies

Farmmama · 12/07/2019 16:53

Anyone else got gestational diabetes? Looks like I’m going to have to be out on insulin as my fasting readings are too high and apparently they can’t be diet controlled Confused

boodles101 · 12/07/2019 16:55

coffeeandgin welcome, if you add me on Facebook Lucy Pharoah and I'll add you to the group.

Megan2018 · 12/07/2019 17:05

@farmmama yes there's several on this thread, one on insulin I think (Stroan) the rest are diet controlled inc me.

Stroan · 12/07/2019 17:08

@farmmama yes, I'm on overnight insulin for fasting levels. All post meal readings are fine so far.

What are your fasting levels? Have they tried Metformin first?

Farmmama · 12/07/2019 17:11

I started on metformin at Wednesday dinner, but fasting has been in the 7s still yesterday and today. She said to see how it goes over the weekend then they’ll reassess on Monday

Megan2018 · 12/07/2019 17:12

I had a shocking reading today at lunchtime, made do with what I could get from the fridge which I didn't think was too bad (houmous and nairns oatcakes, some roast veg couscous and some sliced meat). Clearly not good - 9.bloody 6! Angry

Farmmama · 12/07/2019 17:16

O dear. I was on a course at work so the only option for lunch was sandwiches. 7.8 so not too bad but still over target and my lunchtime readings are usually okay Sad I’ll have to be very good at dinner!

Stroan · 12/07/2019 17:17

All medication can take a while to bring fasting levels into range unfortunately. And if you need medication for it, it's absolutely no reflection on you or anything you are doing.

Insulin is completely fine though. The finger pricking for testing hurts a LOT more than injecting insulin. There's no side effects as long as you are carefully testing it and eating just enough to avoid a hypo.

The Gestational Diabetes UK Mums Facebook group is really good for info and reassurance. There are some tips about fasting levels (snacking at bedtime etc) but nothing worked for me apart from insulin. It's magic!

Farmmama · 12/07/2019 17:20

I’m on that group thanks and have found it really helpful 😃

Stroan · 12/07/2019 17:22

Don't beat yourself up about an explainable 7.8! It's a learning curve to work out what you tolerate etc and that's only just over target. For what it's worth, the Scottish targets are different so 7.8 is still under target for me.

Consistently high readings that can't be explained are the ones that they worry about.

iano · 12/07/2019 19:24

I think a few of us had hip pain. I went to see an osteopath last week as I could hardly walk. The pain is gone now! Best money I have spent in ages. I just thought I'd share..

kyles101 · 12/07/2019 19:32

Hi @Farmmama I have gd too. So far managing to diet control with pretty low carb and very little sugar - an apple for breakfast sent my reading up to 7 this morning 🙄 if you're having carbs or fruit pair with something full fat to lessen the effect.

@Megan2018 could have been the cous cous? It's basically pasta. Good glug of olive oil over it all may have helped?

Would second unexplained readings though - I can have the same thing for dinner two nights running and get different results 🤷‍♀️ also my morning readings are never the same, all in target at the moment but fully prepared in case this worsens over time as I know it's nothing I've done as @Stroan says.

coffeeandgin26 · 12/07/2019 21:14

Thankyou Lucy - have just added (I think!)

I have found out today I have GD - going to midwife tomorrow to find out more. If I'm bloody terrified!

Stroan · 12/07/2019 21:19

@coffeeandgin26 honestly, it's a lot to get your head round but it's really not that bad.

Shout if you want links and recommendations.

Megan2018 · 12/07/2019 21:27

@kyles101
Its all things I've eaten before and been fine, but I think it is Oatcakes, the bastards just don’t seem to like me

Farmmama · 12/07/2019 21:30

My food pairing is going well and I’m able to keep post-meal readings under target, but unfortunately high fasting readings in the morning can’t be diet controlled, hence the need for drugs to help stabilise levels
@coffeegin it’s quite overwhelming at first but take a look at the recipes and info on gestational.diabetes.co.uk - it’s really helpful and makes you realise you can still enjoy food!! Once you understand food pairing it’s a game changer. Obviously no sugary drinks, chocolate bars etc but you can still enjoy treats if you pair them with the right foods 😃

coffeeandgin26 · 12/07/2019 21:30

Thanks @Stroan . I'm almost 32 weeks so keep telling myself it's not for long now anyway!

Stroan · 12/07/2019 21:41

@coffeeandgin26 exactly! This is my second GD pregnancy and I've been on medication this time since 19 weeks-ish. There's worse things! And I have a stash of yummy food in my hospital bag.

The website farmmama mentioned above is my saviour. The NHS advice can be quite different and it definitely doesn't work for me, but the diet on the website works perfectly. It's kind of up to you to figure out what will work best for you. There's every chance you can control it all with diet and it'll have little impact. Fingers crossed!

Megan2018 · 12/07/2019 22:22

My fasting readings are rarely higher than 4.5, but lunchtime at work is my hardest. I can’t find any work compatible lunches that reliably work, some days the same thing can vary between 5.5 and 8. It’s fine at home but work is hard! Dinner and breakfast always fine as we always have had low carb then.

I’ve got 5 weeks left of work so this doesn’t bode well!

This weekend also likely to be a shocker as out a lot. Ho hum.

It’s also getting harder and harder to get blood out Hmm

Stroan · 12/07/2019 22:43

I find lunch hard, can't tolerate more than one slice of bread but wraps are still ok or half a baked potato. Will be much easier when I finish work though.

Megan, I had that for a few weeks. Warming my finger up in warm water helped.
