I am a little nervous about starting this thread as I was previously on the March 2008 thread but m/c'd. But I got my bfp this morning and although still faint it is clearly there.

Anyone else coming to nervously join me?

SMCG, plenty of women don't suffer from morning sickness etc. so don't worry. I have plenty of friends who have not suffered much at all.

I myself am in a terrible state today. Everything is making me nautious. Milk is the only thing that is helping right now. I'm definitely grumpy too. Trying my best not to be. I'm going to Spain on Thursday for a few days to see my brother and his family. I'm looking foward to it. I'll have to tell my bro and sister in law that I'm pg though because otherwise they will think I'm dying! I don't know how I am going to get up at 6am and get to the airport and deal with the flight though. I'll just have to have a ton of supplies ready - ginger snaps, hard boiled sweets, sea bands etc. It will be worth it to see my little niece and nephew though

smcg · 21/08/2007 11:24

Thanks Mollyfloss. Hope you feel better soon and enjoy your holiday.

Kirbo · 21/08/2007 11:40

Had first visit with the Dr today and I was told that the latest advice was to have NO alcohol during the duration of the pregnancy - what have others been told? Not feeling like drinking any alcohol at the moment (makes me feel sick at the thought!!!) but I thought you could still have one glass of wine once a week?

scorpio1 · 21/08/2007 11:41

new guidelines are no alcohol. i wouldnt want to take the risk.

vacaloca · 21/08/2007 11:55

Although doctors have admitted that there's no evidence that the odd glass does any damage, but they can't trust silly little pregnant women to stop at one glass, so they're issuing guidelines saying no wine at all. I don't feel like it at the moment, though, so I guess that's okay!

Mollyfloss · 21/08/2007 12:08

I've read a lot of stuff on this on the internet. Some research says a couple of glasses a week is ok, some others say mothers to be should not drink. I definitely think it is best not to drink in any case during the first 12 weeks as that's when all the organs etc. are formed. For the rest of the pregnancy I don't plan to drink at all as there just is no upside. Usually I love a glass of wine but as no reasearch is conclusive why take the risk?

Same goes for caffeine in my opinion... Some research says you can have up to 300mg per day but this is difficult to measure and again depending on what you read, research conclusions differ so again it is probably not worth the risk. When I was pg the last time I switched to decaff and never went back (unfortunately I miscarried). If you drink decaff make sure it's organic (preferably treated by the Swiss water method) as regular decaff uses chemicals to get rid of the caffeine which can be just as harmful...

All that said, if you really need a one-off glass of wine when you are well into your pregnancy or a cup of coffee I doubt it would do much harm.

scorpio1 · 21/08/2007 12:09

im still doing tea and coffee.... apparently up to 3 cups of coffee or six (!) of tea is fine....im having one coffee in morning and one tea at night.

TheMaskedPoster · 21/08/2007 12:16

Hello all

Been busy being tired and feeling nauseous, so haven't been on here much of late...

Firstly so sorry to hear the news kookiegoddess, hope you are getting lots and lots of support in RL {{{ }}}

The morning sickness is still coming in waves, but have discovered that the usual rememdies (for me at this stage) are Toast (with anything - but marmalade is a fave) and cups of tea! Quite bizaare as I don't drink tea usually.

The weather is cruddy and making me even more tired, I'm sure. ... but on the positive side is that I will pop on a dvd for dd at some stage during the day and have a little shut-eye for 5 mins or so!

I am not going to drink during this pregnancy (which like you vacaloca and kirbo I don't even have the slightest want to), but I did have the very occasional glass of wine when pregnant with dd. The guidelines have definitely become more clear, so I'm not even going to chance it this time round.

Ref the Sex question - we haven't been as of late, due to me being tired and in bed asleep incredibly early AND feeling sick a lot of the time (real passion killer that!).

My tummy is definitely bigger/bloated, but I have actually lost weight due to the ms ... however, my jeans are usually off and replaced by 'comfies' by 5pm!

CeylonSapphire - hope your wasp sting feels better soon (last time I was stung by a wasp it was on my lip and it swelled up and I looked like a Leslie Ash Caricature !)

Have been a tad moody and a wind machine too ... poor dh and dd!

Well all, hope you are all ok and look forward to reading your posts soon

I miss red wine
I'm not going to drink alcohol either (had a good few glasses before I knew I was pregnant though) and have tried to cut down on coffee but I'm drnking several cups of tea a day.

I lived in the US for a few years. I was out with a pregnant friend one night and she ordered a glass of wine ... the waiter refused to serve her!

mirry · 21/08/2007 12:26

hello all

really excited about joining - i got a bfp last week after nearly a year of ttc! So I'm about 5.3 weeks, with a due date of 18 April.

This is my first one (I'm 33), and I'm completely paranoid about every minor twinge and ache and am hyper aware that this is v early days yet. I'm feeling rubbish, which I'm hoping is somehow a good sign...

loisstella · 21/08/2007 12:35

the drink thing is so funny... you hear a different thing every time you speak to someone else. Some say at the beginning it can't harm but in the seocnd trimester you shouldn't.

My best friend didn't know she was pregnant until week 7 (very irregular periods), drank her own body weight in booze several times during that period and continued to have a small glass of red wine most days day(!)throughout her pregnancy and was told after the birth that it helped her with her iron levels... so there...

I guess it really is what you feel comfortable with.
It may be the latest advise to not drink at all - but there's no conclusive evidence that drinking does harm your child.

loisstella · 21/08/2007 12:37

Welcome Mirry - we're in the same boat, 33, first baby, nervous and we're due about 3 days apart... welcome to the rollercoaster ride - should be fun!

smcg · 21/08/2007 12:38

Congrats Mirry

TheMaskedPoster · 21/08/2007 12:48

Hey - congrats Mirry!!!

mirry · 21/08/2007 12:51

thanks everyone!! much appreciated. looking forward to the next few months (everything crossed). Any tips on how to chill out a bit gratefully received...

Mollyfloss · 21/08/2007 12:52

Loisstella, I guess your friend is pretty lucky if she could drink her own body weight in booze several times until she knew she was pregnant and continued to have a small glass of red wine most days... Yes, many women seem to be able to do anything and their child will not suffer. However, there are women who have done the same as your friend and their child has ended up with alcohol foetal syndrome... so why take the risk....

Maybe it sounds like I'm 'holier than thou' here, but believe me I'm usually quite the wino! However, having gone through a miscarriage I'm quite paranoid so I'm being extra careful...

Kirbo · 21/08/2007 12:52

Its so difficult with what you should do/shouldn't do when pregnant! We haven't told anyone yet so we are trying to get by on social occassions by making on that I am having a drink when not really. I'm sure it won't be long until someone guesses! The old 'i'm on anti-biotics' line doesn't pass anymore (dead give-away), and it's not like me to refuse a glass of wine when out for dinner with friend/family! Looks like we are going to have to hide indoors until the scan in 6 weeks time!

scorpio1 · 21/08/2007 12:52

I always have a nice bath or a little sleep when DP gets home-its a break for me in between my day with DC's and then putting them to bed.

I remind myself that i cant rush round anymore-i will get too tired and wont be able to cope.

navymummy · 21/08/2007 12:54

hiya ladies! good morning.
Woke up feeling a lot better today. Still feel exhausted, but better, LOL!
Itching for DH to get home though, it's driving me insane not being able to tell him!

Mirry, if it makes you feel any better, I am 30, and this will be my 3rd, and I STILL feel all nervous and jumpy, early days are a bit like that I think it's very common. Well, it is for me anyway! Haa haa!

I'm american. My DH is english, and we were each taught differently about drinking during pregnancy... I refused to drink at all during my first, and with my second, I had a total of 2 glasses of red wine, in tiny intervals, but I'd day it added up to 2 wine glasses worth. But to be honest, I couldn't stomach the taste of any alcohol whilst pregnant. Guess your body can be funny that!

lemonaid · 21/08/2007 12:54

Latest advice is no alcohol. But that's based on studies where the subjects were having a couple of drinks a couple of times a week -- so far as I'm aware, no one has ever actually done a study looking at the effect or lack of effect of having a single drink once every few weeks.

I intend to do what I did with DS -- no alcohol at all in the first trimester and then in the second and third trimesters have one small glass of wine very occasionally if it's a special occasion. Which is likely to mean one small glass on Christmas Day, one small glass on New Year's Eve, one small glass on our wedding anniversary and one small glass on DH's birthday/valentine's day (they are very close together so I wouldn't want to drink on both days). I do not believe that having four small glasses of wine spread over the second and third trimesters poses any risk to the baby, and there is no evidence at all suggesting that it does (not that I'm suggesting there's anything wrong with abstaining totally).

I think you can put vinegar on wasp stings (and bicarb for a bee). That should be OK even when pregnant (although I suspect it won't bring huge relief, and probably needed to be done as soon as you were stung for maximum effect).

scorpio1 · 21/08/2007 12:54

MF, im with you on the risk thing....and i normally adore wine! i suppose each woman has a different idea of the risk and interprets what she wants to do from the guidelines.

Same with smoking-lots of people i know have smoked all the way through pg, despite warnings.

i was very annoyed at not being able to eat homemade coleslaw on the weekend!

scorpio1 · 21/08/2007 12:56

lemonaid- DP was teasing me about no champagne at xmas, the git!

navymummy · 21/08/2007 12:59

lamoaid- i had forgotten about christmas and new year... not to mention DH's 30th... a well... those are the breaks I suppose. I just hate to watch him drink when I know i can't, drives me nuts, like a little kid! Ha ha ha!

How are everyone's aches and pains today?

navymummy · 21/08/2007 13:00

, i meant lemonaid, PLEASE forgve me

lemonaid · 21/08/2007 13:09
