I am a little nervous about starting this thread as I was previously on the March 2008 thread but m/c'd. But I got my bfp this morning and although still faint it is clearly there.

Anyone else coming to nervously join me?

its ok-i feel v sick now

lemonaid · 16/08/2007 16:20

How did you guess!

I think if I hired an individual IM it would work out a lot cheaper, but the advantage of the Birth Centre is that they are in the back garden of St George's so if anything goes wrong you are only a trolley ride away. I don't have the nerve to go for a HBAC -- I just wouldn't feel confident that nothing would go wrong. Cost includes nuchal scan & blood test, anomaly scan (with videos of both), four-weekly midwife checkups, the actual birth and accommodation and food, and twelve (I think) post-natal appointments with the midwife over the six weeks following the birth.

I'm sure they were only around £4000 when I briefly considered it for DS, but that was three years ago, I suppose. And I think insurance premiums (the biggest part of the cost of an IM) have gone up a lot since then.

lemonaid · 16/08/2007 16:26

Ah, right -- that's the difference.

The Birth Centre have Professional Indemnity Insurance, because they are a birth centre so they can get it, while independent independent midwives don't have PII, because they aren't birth centres so they can't.

The PII is responsible for a huuuuuuge proportion of the cost (more than half, IIRC).

I don't feel comfortable having a DC somewhere that doesn't have insurance, because someone I know who was due with her DD the same time I was due with DS had her birth horribly bungled and wound up with her DD very severely brain damaged and requiring lifelong 1:1 specialist care (now I know that's not likely to happen in fact it's one reason I'm looking at the Birth Centre in the first place, because I know there will be enough experienced staff around but if it did then the cost would be horrendous (into the millions) if there was no one to sue)

lemonaid · 16/08/2007 16:28

At least, I think that's right. They certainly had PII when I checked them out before.

vacaloca · 16/08/2007 16:32

I see. Yes, that would make a huge amount of difference. IMs can't get insurance at the moment but, as you say, the likelihood of something going wrong with an IM is so low that I'd be happy to run that risk. Just had a look at the place you're thinking of and it does look fab. Good compromise between hospital and home, although I've done some much reading on homebirths now that I feel hugely confident that they're as safe (if not safer) than a hospital birth. Michel Odent has even said that he thinks there's less risk of uterine rupture at home although I don't know the reasons for his thinking - I'll have to look into that. Anyway, we're probably jumping the gun thinking so far ahead! Although I have been thinking about all these issues for a good couple of years now!

TheMaskedPoster · 16/08/2007 16:48

bleurgh

feel really sick .. how I haven't actually physically been sick yet is beyond me.

Poor dd, only spent 50 mins at the park before I dragged her home cos I couldn't handle it any longer ..not like me at all!

what was that I was saying about embracing this morning (ha ha!) sickness?

loisstella · 16/08/2007 16:49

here's something I'm not enjoying about all this (and wondering if any of you have the same problem...) I smell! I do not normally have a very strong body odor but I'm a wee bit smelly at the moment!

TheMaskedPoster · 16/08/2007 16:49

lol at scorpio!

Lorayn · 16/08/2007 16:54

I just got back from the doctors, and he seems to think it's likely, from what my notes say, and what I told him that with my first section the vertical incision was only on the outside and NOT on the uterus(if it was vertical on my uterus it is a 12% chance of uterine rupture, therefore very dangerous to have VBAC), he asked if I wanted VBA2C and I said yes! He was really nice about it, and said they'll try and do whatever they can. I have been referred to the consultant at the hospital but all my doctor said was I wouldn't be able to have a home birth, so lets hope it's the way everyone else will be!! So far it bodes well, fingers crossed.

ladylush · 16/08/2007 17:02

sorry hijack - hi Scorpio just checking all is ok

lemonaid · 16/08/2007 18:06

loisstella -- the chances are you aren't any more smelly, you just have a more sensitive sense of smell at the moment. I spent early pregnancy last time asking DH if I smelt and he kept assuring me I didn't (and he's not the type to be nice for the sake of it, even with a hormonal pregnant woman).

I wanted a home birth with DS, although didn't end up with one for various reasons. I just don't think that I'd feel confident enough in a HBAC to be able to relax (well, not "relax", but feel in the right emotional state for birthing a baby).

Lorayne's post reminds me though that I want to check my notes from DS. The community midwife last time made a comment that implied I'd had a vertical incision on the inside, even though the external incision is horizontal in which case a VBAC would be a bad idea. But she was a community midwife from another hospital and hadn't seen my birth notes, so I have no idea where she got that from the GP said there was nothing in my discharge notes to imply a vertical incision. Still, I'd like to check.

scorpio1 · 16/08/2007 18:13

Hi Ladylush-im fine, thankyou. are you doing well? Im very tired!

I am no longer worrying- i crashed out as soon as DP came in-felt v sick eating and went to bed!

vacaloca · 16/08/2007 18:44

Lorayn - that's great that your GP is so supportive. If you're really keen on a vba2c then keep insisting until you find a supportive consultant. A friend of mine had to change consultants 3 times (the last time at 37 weeks) until she found one willing to support her in having a vba3c. But remember, of course, that you don't need anyone's permission to have a vbac. You can just ask the supervisor of midwives to find you a midwife that will support you and has vbac experience.

I think the incision type is very important, so I'd make sure I got the hospital notes, perhaps ask the midwife to go through them with you. That sort of detail wouldn't be missing from the notes. Lemonaid - it's very rare these days to get a vertical incision. Was your LO quite premature?

Lorayn · 16/08/2007 19:08

Lemonaid, I had a vertical incision on the outside as DD was born at 32 weeks, but my doctor said to me today even then, it is very uncommon to have a vertical incision on the actual uterus. x

lemonaid · 16/08/2007 19:11

No -- and I am 99.9% sure that they didn't do a vertical incision. If that midwife hadn't said anything I wouldn't be even faintly concerned. And I still think she didn't know what she was talking about (surely someone else who had more direct knowledge would have mentioned it), but I'd feel happier just checking.

lemonaid · 16/08/2007 19:14

The only two people I know who had vertical incisions in the actual uterus were both total crash "get this baby out RIGHT NOW" sections.

Elfsmummy · 16/08/2007 19:40

Gosh, haven't we grown! In numbers I mean - although I feel as though I have physically grown too!

I still don't really have any symptoms,I'm not really even that tired (no more so than normal with a 16 month old)

Very interesting to read all your research in private care - I need to investigate a private nuchal scan locally but for everything else will be NHS. They were really good to me last time with quite a few interventions (amniocentesis, couple of extra growth scans and eventual induction)

However I personally found our post birth care appalling. DD was born on early on Good Friday and I was determined to breast feed. I rather niavely thought I'd get plenty of help with that on the maternity wards - to be honest I would have been better off at home. No support was given - we struggled through regardless!

Will be interested to hear what you all decide.

Getting concerned about my lack of symptoms!!
Should just be enjoying it - I know!

Daftmoo · 16/08/2007 19:50

More new names....yayyy !!

Lol @ all EllieG's posts

Today has been the worst day so far for feeling sick - felt pukey ALL morning, it eased of at lunch time and is now back with vengence tonight I'm dreading actually throwing up because once I start I cant stop. We didnt go for my birthday meal in the end as I couldnt cope with it, to make matters worse we had to get off the motor way because of a diversion and dp ended up taking us down loads of winding country lanes....I had to have my hand over my mouth and the windows open all the way home.

Back home now with my trusty breadsticks

Hope everyone is doing well today

x

Elfsmummy · 16/08/2007 20:29

Mum07. When I worked in womens health (many moons ago) we used to scan at about 6 weeks in a previous ectopic. Earlier than that if someone was particularly at risk there is a blood test that you can do that isn't totally acurate. Basically in early pregnancy the levels of the hormones that we test for in pregnancy tests, doubles each 24 hours. So if you have 2 blood tests 24 or 48 hours apart, there'll be able to see if the hormones are doubling in the usual way. Its pretty inaccurate, and if it isn't doubling, it can be for many different reason, but if it is doubling, it offers a little reasurance until the scan. Its a relatively expensive test - so your Gp may refer you to the hospital for it if you think its warrented.

Ramble ramble ramble! I hope that made sence to someone other than me!

modsaluk · 16/08/2007 20:32

Hello people what does VBAC mean?

I am starting to feel a little sicky every now and then and as daft as it sounds feels quite reassured by this. Also my boobs are killing me, if i run up or down the stairs i am in agony! I also have a very strong sense of smell, can smell everything thats what makes me feel sick every now and then.

Not really been feeling more tired then usual i have a two year old that keeps me quite active.

Hope all is well.

Elfsmummy · 16/08/2007 20:33

absolutely fantastic maternity pillow here

Its a little more pricey than the standard V cushions but full of tiny bean bag beans and the most comfortable thing ever. Also very useful for breast feeding. I've already got mine out again - Don't need it yet - just love it!

Elfsmummy · 16/08/2007 20:33

VBAC = viginal birth after C-section

Elfsmummy · 16/08/2007 20:34

Obviously should be virginal

Elfsmummy · 16/08/2007 20:38

just found the same cushion on ebay - baragin

Milco · 16/08/2007 22:24

Hello again. Thanks for the welcome messages. Seems I am (yet again) a bit late for all the action. Anyway, thought I would have a go at updating the list with new people since last night. Might not have got it quite right so new people (like me) perhaps you could check what I have put - and add any EDDs - sorry for any mistakes
