oh great, good news studentmum. and the shopping sounded good as well I spent some time looking at those fascniator things - feathery confections for your head for a wedding next week, but i look like Big Bird in them so will have to go bareheaded...

Piekin, my skin has changed, but like last time its patches of dry skin, rather than outbreaks. think that means i need to start fish oil supplements, which helped.

had to buy another new pram yesterday. i think i must be very heavy handed, the rate i get through them. this is our 3rd, with ds only 2.1yrs old. Mind you, we don't keep a car, and we do walk several miles a day over endlessly broken city pavements. and our first still has some wear in it, but is only really good for prone little baby - its the micralite and ds rebelled against the sling seat with no support. our second was a quinny zap which he was comfy in, but it truly has worn out. the handles keep falling off and the brakes often disengage when buses brake or turn so i have to lurk clinging onto it for dear life, rather than sitting down. can't face that once i get bigger!

finally got a maclaren xt techno like everyone else round here. they work best on the buses i'm told. think we're getting lent a phil and teds for a while next year, so hoping to mix and match prams, slings, double buggy and maybe get a buggy board as well. oh i dunno. it still all seems academic until the 12 week scan!

Merryberry - You've hit the nail on the head - the great pram debate. We have 2 - a really light MacLaren buggy which is fine but rain cover is torn as DD kicks it when we try to put it on, and a Graco pushchair which is not going to make it for DC2, but is part of a travel system and being able to put the car seat straight on top was great. Car seat is still fine. What do I do??? I want to get a new, suitable from birth Something, but what? Anyone got any recommendations?

turtle23 · 30/07/2007 10:19

Hi there...new today. I'm due 23 March with my first. Boggled by the number of websites and forums available!

turtle23 · 30/07/2007 10:21

I'm still waiting for my booking appt date (as the consultant is on holiday for two weeks) and going slightly mad waiting! When did everyone else have theirs?

MerlinsBeard · 30/07/2007 10:57

i haven't even been to GP yet turtle! If i am honest i am too scared! (previous mmc). booking is usually about 8-10 weeks where i am but it varies in each area

imjin100 · 30/07/2007 11:13

is booking appt at the hospital or with GP?
have found great anti sickness food for me for just now - twiglets...just inhaled a packet and definitely feel a bit better. Or perhaps I'm conning myself just because I love the idea of being able to justify eating bags of them!

spugs · 30/07/2007 11:17

our booking in is at around the same time as that, feels like ages away

pie - my skins gone horrible as well, it always does when i m pg. ive got some really good stuff from dermalogica but its really strong so im not using it just incase.

im having the great pram debate too. how old are children when they dont need a pushchair anymore? dd1 was just over 2, dd2 will be 1 mth off her 2nd birthday so dont know whether to get a double or not.

saying all that though my cramps have came back which is worrying me, id had them for a week or so (which i normally do) but now they seem to have came back, last time that happened was when i had a mmc so i am panicing some what

MerlinsBeard · 30/07/2007 11:21

I COUNT BOOKING IN A FORST VISIT WITH MW WHEN YOU GET YOUR NOTES. whoops sorry didn't know caps was on!

piekin · 30/07/2007 11:27

hi spugs, hope you are o.k, sorry to hear about your back pain, hope it is just a twinge n nothing serious.xx

LoveAndSqualor · 30/07/2007 11:48

Hi everyone, hope you all had great weekends - I spent a substantial chunk of mine napping on the sofa - highly beneficial ...

studentmum - great news about your scan!

sweetkitty · 30/07/2007 12:18

hi all not much to report around here just enjoying the nice weather and breaking up countless "pram" fights in the garden. Honestly they have 2 of everything but still fight over the same pram and doll.

Re: the great pram debate I done this to death last time. At the moment I have a Graco tandem double (never use it now) and a Techno XT for DD2. Used to have a Graco travel system which I used for 6 weeks before getting the Maclaren. Used the car seat for both of them though then sold it. Also had a M&P Twin Aria side by side which I didn't like that much so sold that as well. DD2 will be 2.1 months when DB3 is born so I will probably need a double again, I'm getting a Phil and Teds I like the double/single thing once DB3 is sitting up it can go in the front and DD2 can have a hop on seat. DD1 has only really started walking everywhere in the last 3 months (shes 3) so I think DD2 will need a buggy for a little while yet.

Had a burst of energy today so have been cleaning up the kitchen cupboards, will probably flag after lunch though.

merryberry · 30/07/2007 12:20

well the maclaren techno goes from birth...

spugs, i hope you are OK.

i have my first booking visit i think with midwives on weds, in my 10th week. i hope very much to never see a consultant, or any registrar/sho-munchkin types. they often default to intervention when they could happily leave well alone. (voice of bitter experience here). not sure if it is midwvies though - uch community midwives won't see me for some strange reason, so i may get lumbered with medical care. hence possible plans to hire independent midwfe brewing. we'll see.

bows down to sweetkitty's awesome pram history . i'd never have got away with a new pram 6 weeks after the previous one. and I would have been glad to see the back of the micralite and it's catchy front wheels.

turtle23 · 30/07/2007 12:27

I've been a nanny and maternity nurse for 15 years...I have seen all the flash prams and pushchairs, used all the three wheel mountaineering things, had a Silver Cross massive pram...
I know without a shadow of a doubt that I will be a dedicated McLaren user from day one!!

merryberry · 30/07/2007 13:05

you're not wrong turtle - just one trip today and i'm already cursing we didn't do maclaren from the get go. it was grand. suspension better than the microlite or quinny, very comfortable under my hands and ds has told me he likes it already! rolls up and down obstacles better than either of them.

OP posts:
imjin100 · 30/07/2007 13:08

we're a very long way off but as the conversation has begun does anyone have a view on travel systems where you can lift the baby from car seat directly to buggy - are they a bad idea. We live in london and I just thought might be good.
can't believe I@m writing about buggies! what a thought.

preggersagain · 30/07/2007 13:10

babies shouldn't be in a car seatb for longer than about two hours- cot death risk and bad for backs apparently. Newborns need to be laying flat.

c4it · 30/07/2007 13:31

My newborn had a mind of her own from day one (couldn't say where she get's it from ) and objected most strongly to lying flat in a push chair! I worried for ages about her spending too much time in car seat because of that advice and in the end I just decided to limit it as much as practical, but my travel system was a god send. I think I'm heading for the MacLaren Techno this time though

3madboys · 30/07/2007 14:22

wow buggy talk already i got a bugaboo for ds3, he is still in it most of the time tho is starting to walk more, so i will be using that for the bump i have the bugaboo board too as ds2 was not quite 2and a half when ds3 turned up, will be using that again too. i also have a variety of slings, a ring sling, wilkinet etc and will use those lots too........unless of course its twins

i have the whole day to myself as dp has taken the boys to the beach

oh re bad skin during preg, i have eczma and it often flares up during preg, i just moisturise, moisturise, moisturise and drink loads of water.

someone mentioned medical care during preg, my gp wante dme to have consultant led care due to my spd and the fact that i have big babies not really an adequate reason, i had it with ds2 and it was a nightmare so i refused it this time, gp not happy but oh well

c4it · 30/07/2007 14:51

3madboys - now that is another good question - slings? I had a baby Bjorn sling for DD1 but it was such a faff to put on didn't use it much. Any ideas for best slings too?

3madboys · 30/07/2007 14:59

i absolutely love my wilkinet, but it takes a bit of pracitse to get used to, well worth it tho.

the ring sling is fab too as i can bfeed whilst wearing it and it is nice and easy to get on and off, the wilkinet has long straps so can be a bit more fiddly.

i would recomend them over any other, i tried loads with ds1 before getting the wilkinet and then got the rind sling as an extra when i had ds3 as i needed to be able to walk about and still bfeed

sweetkitty · 30/07/2007 15:19

merryberry - I just never liked the Graco travel system, the Maclaren was miles better (I was in London at the time and on buses so it was great for that) it folds really flat and with the cosy toes or a nice sheep skin would be really cosy for a newborn. I'm with you on the avoidance of all consultants, last time I HAD to see one why I don't know but apparently you HAVE to, it was a complete waste of time, he looked at my notes then tried to talk me out of a homebirth.

3mb - I might have a go with a wilkinet this time as well although with DP shelling out for a P&T's might be pushing my luck. I have a Baby Bjorn that I didn't use that much and a Corrie and Carry thing I bought off ebay but DD2 just howled every time she went in it. A ring sling might be better for BFing in as well.

Apart from the P&T, I need a newborn car seat and DD1 will need a new bed as we will pass the cots down so DB3 gets the bedside one. Unless it's a boy poor thing will be getting hardly any new clothes.

Hey ladies

I've just made some fudge, mmmmmmm! Am happily licking the spoon while it sets in the fridge. Yum!

The MW came round this morning for my booking-in appointment. She's the same mw I had with DD. She can be a bit abrupt, but is basically nice enough. She sent me off to the loo to pee in a pot but I dropped the pot down the loo! I would have just rinsed it out but since it's being sent to the labs for testing, it had some preservative powder in it, which of course didn't survive being dunked. She also took some blood, and we filled in lots of forms. Nothing too exciting, but she (and apparently the whole team of community mw's) are very supportive of home birth, which is brilliant. Nothing now until 12 week scan.

Spugs, hope the cramps aren't anything serious.

Welcome turtle!!! 3MB - I never got on with my ring sling. Was yours stiff cotton or stretchy fabric? Mine was stiff cotton, and DD always looked so squashed. Plus she fell out of it one day when she was really tiny and I never got over that!! I'll need a new sling this time, and will get a more 'hippy' type than the regular Baby Bjorn or Tomy types, but there are so many out there and it's hard to know what's good without testing them. What's a wilkinet?

Anyway, time for a cup of tea and a sit down before dd wakes up....

timmyinatizzy · 30/07/2007 15:54

Me and dp are looking at buggys too. Was in Bluewater last weekend and all we saw were Mamas and Papas ones. Think I want a travel system too, as you get the car seat with it. We've also started thinking about childcare for when I go back to work. The cost is mounting up. We're going to have to move up to a 3 bed place as it is and maybe even move areas so that our mortgage stays the same. Don't think we can afford a 3 bed where we are.
