Oooh and reusable nappy peeps - my friend did this years ago and got a grant (don't think it's income dependant, they just wanted more of a take up) to pay for all of the equipment needed to get fully set up - might be worth a google to see if anything similar is sill running.

TwittleBee · 09/04/2019 15:07

Never used one of those nose things either for DS!

I sorted through what we have so far for this baby and have found we have 30 baby grows for 0-3 and 14 for newborn. Don't think I realised just how many I had kept from DS before buying a few more here and there! Oops! We have none for 3 months onwards! So certainly going to just tell people to buy clothes from 3 months onwards.

TwittleBee · 09/04/2019 15:08

Also have a mountain of muslins. Absolute essential for me. Not because DS was a sicky baby but because my milk flow is horrendously fast Blush

Stroan · 09/04/2019 15:19

I treated to hear that about a travel system - did they say why? We got a LOT of use out of ours but where I live, we really need the car to get anywhere useful!

Babies are contrary little things. DD would only accept the most expensive Maam dummies, rejected the Medela bottles but liked Tommee Tippee. She screamed blue murder in the beautiful polka dot gro snug that I lovingly picked but was completely chilled out in the summer infant swaddles.

Thinking about it, the money I must have spent is really quite horrific.

@twittlebee I'm putting off going through the clothes as I suspect there's a LOT. DD was too big for newborn stuff so I'm torn on whether it's even worth getting a few smaller bits.

@kyles101 doesn't it! I had to give some away when I realised they were taking up more storage than ALL our other bed linen combined. And we only really used the odd cellular blanket!
More than 15 came from DHs family and I had to sit and unwrap them all and display enough gratitude for MIL, all whilst wondering what I was going to do with them all.

I've only got 5 towelled bibs (bought by friends), 3 little hats with ties to keep them on (given to us by another friend) and 3 sleepsuits/babygrows for 0-1 month cause I needed to add something for free shipping on the changing bag!(plus they were a bargain, about £7 and they're unisex mothercare ones)
Will probably buy some more clothes after 20 week scan 😂

Tefiti2 · 09/04/2019 15:26

Yes @twittlebee - I remember having to unlatch baby as they would literally choke on my initial let down 😳 must buy more muslins!!

Stroan · 09/04/2019 15:27

Oh, one baby thing I highly recommend is the Tuppence and Crumble Star Wrap. It's very cute and very practical, easier than wrestling them into snow suits and safe to use in car seats.

@Stroan if you end up with that many blankets again I'm sure there are baby units in hospitals or mother and baby centres that would appreciate them (especially if brand new)

TheCraicDealer · 09/04/2019 15:34

My DSis had two of the star wraps Stroan and loved them- so handy for when they're out and about in the car seat. Not so bulky it interferes with the straps but can't be kicked off. She keeps badgering me asking if I've picked a colour yet! Grin

Megan2018 · 09/04/2019 15:37

@Stroan
They all said that after 6 weeks they found the car seat and baby combo too heavy to be lifting out. Much easier to take baby out of the car seat and transfer to the the pram.

We're all rural so have to drive everywhere.

Instead they all recommended just having a carrycot for pushchair. The Joie 360 spin car seat has been recommended to me twice as being easy on the back but not sure it is compatible with my car sadly. But will look for similar.

Stroan · 09/04/2019 15:38

@annieAR I donated most to our local baby bank as it had quite a few urgent cases at the time. I'm hoping people will think I don't need blankets for a second baby this time!

@theCraicDealer they are lovely. Ours was a gift and I'm quite tempted to get another one in a different colour. Don't NEED it though...

My MW said no to Olbas/Vicks @Bunnymummy89
But I don't know if there is much evidence to support - I did look. I had a horrible cold early on and she said no to it - but that might have been just first trimester. Don't panic!

Stroan · 09/04/2019 15:41

@megan2018 ah, I was the opposite. No way was I waking a sleeping DD to transfer her into the carrycot for a quick run round the shop! We are all different though.

The nose Frida is a tube where you use your mouth to suck out the baby snot. About £6 on Amazon. Re-usable.

It apparently has a bit that stops you swallowing the snot - but I still find it grim! In fact just typing that makes me gag. I am quite snot adverse!

TheCraicDealer · 09/04/2019 15:46

You definitely can't use Vicks on babies, something to do with the camphor oil content. Not sure about when pregnant though- hope it's alright as I used it last week when I had a stinking cold! Not like you can use anything else is it, most cold and flu remedies seem to be out of bounds.

A while ago I got some of these shower bombs off Etsy with menthol and lavender which are ok'ed for use during pregnancy- they were heavenly! Feels like a proper treat.

AnnieAR · 09/04/2019 15:53

I've seen nasal decongesters for babies 5hat are like little pipettes so you don't have to suck it out yourself 😂

IVEgottheDECAF · 09/04/2019 17:01

Omg i forgot about the star wraps. I have two from dc4 in different sizes so will reuse them although if baby is a girl i really like the classic baby pink

I can't carry a baby in a carseat, they weigh so much! The pram i am currently looking at comes with a carseat but i would rarely use as travel system. I dont drive either so not much need

KLane · 09/04/2019 17:17

The Star Wrap is my go to gift for anyone having a baby. DS lived in his all winter. We've got a medium but I may buy a small to take us through autumn, given that I'm not buying much else.

I have to say, we use the Nose Frida all the time when DS has a cold, but I certainly didn't use it in the first few months. God I hate to think of all the money I wasted on other things though- muslins, bedding, cellular blankets, and in particular the steriliser. If you have a microwave, just use the bags and wait to see if breastfeeding works out if you're planning on trying! All the of the just in case "essentials" are now sitting untouched in the loft. I bought/was gifted so much nappy cream that nearly 2 years on, we still haven't gotten through it!

IVEgottheDECAF · 09/04/2019 17:31

For a steriliser i prefer cold water with tablets. I had a very bad experience while sleep deprived with a microwave steriliser and my hands Sad

Hsunshine · 09/04/2019 17:35

I am going to try buy a few things I deff need (like car seat, clothes, Moses basket) each month to try spread it out a bit more

Hsunshine · 09/04/2019 17:37

I was just going to get a crib for the first few months, but then I realised that won’t help me if I want him to sleep downstairs so then I decided on Moses basket. I don’t need both right? Just one or the other? I’ll have a cot bed too for the nursery when he’s bigger

AnnieAR · 09/04/2019 17:42

I picked up a wicker moses basket and a stand on facebook marketplace for £10 will just get a new mattress and sheets and wash the cover nearer the time bubba is born, good way to save money with moses baskets/cribs/cots - also if you need to spread the cost of more expensive things then mothercare do a 0% interest payment plan :)

Megan2018 · 09/04/2019 17:57

I'm getting a milton cold water steriliser at the suggestion of friends as you can use it to sterilise small toys, nipple shields, dummies etc and just leave the stuff in there until needed. The microwave ones seem a massive faff. They are cheap as chips used.

I'm going to tentatively try breastfeeding but we will probably move on to formula but not buying any bottles or prefect prep until we need to.

@Hsunshine We have 2nd hand Bedside crib for upstairs (Tutti Bambini Cozee) so just needs new mattress. For downstairs will use the carrycot from the pram.
I have a huge aversion to moses baskets though. Hate the look of them and I don't want to have to move things upstairs and down if I have a section (our stairs are steep).

I like the look of the star wrap so will add that on to the list.

happydays00 · 09/04/2019 18:06

Also loved the star blanket for DD and will be re-using. Other must haves for me was the perfect prep machine as I FF and the chicco next to me (although any bedside cot would have worked!)

I am aiming to combi feed this time round. Does anyone have any must haves for bf'ing? Ie best breast pumps, nipple shields and all of that jazz? I literally have no idea!
