  • feeling them move!

Re slings - I was at an NCT meeting and one lady was saying how wonderful her Huggabub (I think that's what it was called) was - but another flinched - I asked why and she said that she'd heard that slings weren't good for v young babies as they should be on their back as much as poss for breathing reflexes etc (I won't tell you the scare story she said - she also didn't know I was pg at the time or she probably would have stayed quiet).

Saying that, I used a sling for short periods with both mine - and I have not personally known anyone with problems.

Loucee · 18/07/2007 19:24

Hi everyone

Hmm talking of Starbucks I enjoyed a lovely caramel frappacino today. It was a rare sunny day so made the most of my lunch break!

I'm glad to read that some others have been having some small amounts of alcohol. I have enjoyed a half of shandy twice since being pg and will prob have the odd half of champagne too at special occasions.

Slings I was converted to a sling when DD was 5wks old. I looked into the research behind them and the information and because they are soft and re-create a womb like environment they aren't bad for a baby's back. Women have worn their babies for hundreds of years and in 3rd world countries there aren't buggies in sight!

The recommendations are that you don't keep the baby in a car seat for more than 2 hours is because the seat is hard surface and the weight is all centred on the base of the spine which in the car seat is curled.

mad4girls · 18/07/2007 19:47

hi again
house is finally quiet at last all family gone, as they all came to sing happy birthday, give prezzies etc anyway shes flat out in bed now, over excitement i think.

glad i dont have to worry about double buggies, althopug the thought of the other 2 running round while im pushing scares me,
so bought a buggy board, paid £49 for it and realised last night it doesnt fit my pram, as they have changed the design slightly since i last had one(the pram that is)

so if anyone wants a buggy board i have one for sale quite hefty to post though, or collect from derby, anyway anyone needing one bear it in mind, its not going anywhre any time soon.

claraq · 18/07/2007 21:11

Skidaddle - your life sounds so lke mine, I have to smile - I find myself saying no so often my DD now looks at me when she is doing something she knows she shouldn't and says "no no no no no"....
I am also thinking of getting a buggy board as it is difficult enough to pursuade her to stay in the buggy now so don't know what she will be like in a few months time. We'll probably borrow a Baby Bjorn sling which we did last time and found it really useful. Means you can wear the baby when you need to get on with stuff in the day time. Although am now worried about it sleeping too much...agh!

BeachBunni · 18/07/2007 21:39

Haven't had the time to post lately but been keepin up with the goss by reading the thread when I get a chance. Have been going to bed at ridiculously early hours for a change to try and make up for the five times I'm up during the night.

Good luck with your scan tomorrow mad4. I have mine on friday and I'm a bit worried about it mainly beacuse I haven't been feeling much lately, just the odd movement. Although the belly is def starting to get bigger and there's the beginning of belly-button poppage happening.

Anyway not much to say for myself - heading off to bed. Night..

suey2 · 19/07/2007 08:21

What about thos rucksack like baby holding things? I am a bit worried about the sling as it looks like the weight will not be distributed evenly on my back: the rucksack is much more egronomic- any thoughts from you lot with experience?

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 09:10

Morning ladies,

Just wanted to share my news... felt LO move properly for the first time last night, had thought I had been feeling little internal bits and pieces but last night was a definite move from one position to the other, actually made me yelp(well not quite but did get a reaction).

Good luck to Mad4 with scan today and good luck to anyone else with scan etc over the next few days.

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 09:12

Suey2 - I saw a lady with one of those rucksacks at the weekend.... the only thing is I think you dont get the intimacy of the sling but for practicality it might be good, although when she was taking off she nearly dropped it and the poor thing nearly fell out. I think it is quite bulky and looked heavy (but may not be). Also, if LO cries or something how would you settle them with them on your back.

mimicakey · 19/07/2007 09:47

Morning All. Thanks for the chats on slings - bonus points to Loucee for the bit on 3rd world countries, good point.

Hooray to mixedmama for feeling LO too! It's very exciting isn't it?! I don't mean to steal your thunder but I'm very excited because DH felt mine for the first time last night! I've tried before but the kicks were too small. Then last night LO was wiggling so I put his hand on my belly and he gave a huge kick, most likely a star jump I think, and DH felt it! Ahhh.

Re double buggys, I know you've all said you're not going to get them, but Jojoblah have those little sidecar things in their sale. Not sure if they fit everything but might be worth a look - under Sale, Practical Products. xxx

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 09:51

Great that DH has felt the kicks too. DH was not at home but phoned him and told him. He missed the first scan so i dont think any of this is real to him yet so looking forward to him feeling LO aswell.

suey2 · 19/07/2007 09:51

mixedmama- i meant the ones that hold the baby at the front?

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 09:54

oh sorry, i havent seen them then

Mrswizz · 19/07/2007 09:57

Scan yesterday, we're having a boy! I knew it was without being told. Its funny, all my friends and family somehow knew it was a boy too.

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 10:10

Ohhh MrsWizz Congrats so pleased for you - now you only have to think of one set of names.

MotherofZ · 19/07/2007 10:17

congrats on the scan - it's tempting me to find out too, even though I said I won't...

cazzybabs · 19/07/2007 10:23

Well done Mrswizz. Do you have a name yet?

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 10:32

Not sure how to do links, you may need to cut and paste - sorry i am rubbish.

This is the buggy pod thing mimcakey was talking about... ithink it is a really good idea.

BecklePhoenixBird · 19/07/2007 10:51

Hi all!
Congrats on your boy MrsWizz! All you people having your 20 week scans is making me excited about mine! I think we will probably find out the sex of ours, DH is desparate to know. Part of me would like the surprise but part of me is very nosey and I think it will be easier for the DSs if they know whether they are getting a brother or sister. Fairly sure they are getting a brother though, I was right with both of them!
Mixedmama, lovely that you felt your first big movement, bless. I had a MW appt yesterday and she listened for the heartbeat, at first she couldn't find anything and then she moved the doppler and I just knew it was on the baby, as soon as she pressed it down baby scooted away to the other side of my tum! Felt a bit like being winded actually and even she felt it move over. Then she tried again and it scooted away again (hehe!). Thankfully she found the HB in the end.
Mimicakey, bet DH was chuffed to feel LO move! Mine can be felt from the outside sometimes but never seems to be when DH is around!
I too think there is too much pressure on women to BF, it is a lovely thing to do but it is not easy. I BF both my boys but not for as long as is recommended, I don't feel guilty as I feel I gave them the best start just by trying. I never enjoyed it with DS1 as it was so painful but kept it up for 2 months. With DS2 it was painful but got easier sooner and I enjoyed it more and fed him until nearly 5 months when he gave it up himself, he just wasn't interested anymore! I also have a few friends who never even tried to BF, they just didn't like the thought of it. I think it is up to them as what is best for baby is that he/she is looked after and loved and this will be done better by a Mum who is happy.

buzzybee · 19/07/2007 10:54

I think maybe you do mean the hug-a-bub Suey that Housemum mentioned. See here

www.hugabub.com

I think its rated #3 or 4 on the MN product rating list and I agree looks like it would be much better for the back. I tried a Baby Bjorn last time and hated it - really dragged my shoulders down. Actually going for physio on Tue for ongoing bad back problems which have flared up again so might ask her about it while I'm there.

Had a chat to the bosses today about my news. They don't want me to tell anyone else just yet in case my clients find out and get spooked. Bit ironic really!

Its so exciting feeling bub move isn't it!! Only downside now is that if you don't feel it move for a few hours you start to worry - another thing to worry about!! DD has been so lovely this week giving my tummy kisses and reading some of her old baby books old loud to it, makes me want to cry

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 10:57

Beckle - I think you are def right about mum needing to be happy with BF. I def plan to try harder this time, but I will be quite pleased with 3 months maybe 6 months, but for me I doubt i will do it past 6 months.

So funny that your little one scooted away, things like that always suggest a boy to me mischief... like my ds having umb cord betwen his legs when we wanted to find out sex, confirmed sex for me!!! Could be completley wrong... when is your scan?

mixedmama · 19/07/2007 11:00

When I looked at the hub a bub i thought that is lovely... then I saw the tying technique, doesnt look safe - altho now i realise i have seen people with them and they look great i just like my baby bjorn clipping into place and knowing it is not down to me having to tie it, but i do like the changing positions of this one.

Mrswizz · 19/07/2007 11:17

Beckle, naughty baby not cooperating with midwife! probably a boy like mine! He had his head so far down my pelvis yesterday the doc couldn't scan for his head measurements. I had to drink pints of water, walk around, do yoga, get turned upside down. Took ages and he still didn't move very much.

thelady · 19/07/2007 11:49

Scan today at 13.40....

We're thinking about a ring sling (google for it!) as it's more flexible for the baby, and more likely to suit us (both got dodgy backs so front carriers are a disaster).

Later,we'll probably get a back-pack style carrier: once the little one is able to sit up and look around happily. There's also the option of the Korean-style carrier a podegi or the way I remember the ladies carrying their babies when I was growing up in Africa which is similar, but just uses a strip of cloth tied at the waist and above the boobs....

I think it's the carriers which for the little one to sit up before they're physically ready to do so which aren't recommended for long-term use, but I could be completely wrong.

BecklePhoenixBird · 19/07/2007 12:04

I also doubt I will BF past 6 months Mixedmama and I will definitely do a bit of mixed feeding before baby gets too big, was a nightmare to get DS2 to take a bottle so we could go out for an evening!
I had to be tipped upside down at first scan with this LO and also at scans with both my boys, they were definitely mischevious and liked to hide down low! I think a boy too - should find out in 3 weeks!
Good luck for your scan this afternoon thelady!
I have never really considered a sling, I had a buggy board when DS2 was born (DS1 was 2.7) and it was fantastic (although DS1 did once fall asleep across the carrycot standing on it!). I will just use my pushchair again this time, I am quite small and my last 2 babies were big so I don't know how long I would cope with a sling for anyway!

BecklePhoenixBird · 19/07/2007 12:05

As for ring slings, my friend has one and she says they are superb, esp round the house as she has a LO who doesn't like to be put down so it leaves her hands free.
