Now that's all out of the way in the thread title we've all got to head down the "things can and will only get better now" ok?? All ailments stop and nothing but good things will befall us all.

Right.

Hi everyone - mum2george, that is such helpful advice. I have gone for a mix of pre-folds and shaped nappies but I am now thinking that a nappy service might be a way around the first four weeks or so when I am sure I will be so tired I might otherwise resort to disposables. Also, printed off a number of origami like folds for DP and I to practice ahead of the date. My mum has already stated that she "does not do" nappies and was I expecting her to. I was very tactful and said I supposed that depended on whether she wanted to have the baby for any length of time, as that would obviously involve changing nappies, but I was certainly not asking her to.
Hersetta, I went through what you are going through a few months back. My stepfather honestly couldn't understand why his being in the house when I went into labour was going to be a problem. This comes of their being a generation that ran to hospital at the first twinge I think. I tried to explain that I would be at home for a good 12 hours or so and really couldn't have house guests, and really would not want them there straight after I arrived home with tiny baby either. Now they are staying in a hotel near the hospital instead. It took a lot of negotiation.
I wanted my mum at the hospital but don't think she will be coming .

Annie75 · 26/06/2007 12:29

It's so hard to be tactful about the parent-thing, isn't it? Although my mum is great, I do feel that labour is quite a private thing - I want my own space and to able to wail and groan at my own naked leisure. My mum offered to come down as soon as my contractions started, but I know my DH would feel a bit ousted if she did and I very much want him to play a part.

I sort of took the chicken's way out and mumbled my thanks - while having no intention of calling her until it's too late... Not sure what you can do, Hersetta if she's already there, other than be straight with her and say you'd really like it to just be your DH, you and doula there for the birth, but would love her support afterwards with the baby...

mum2george · 26/06/2007 12:32

Kite, 12 hours after my first twinge I was pushing, so hopefully yours will be as quick!

Annie, not sure which was around mine is. It was breech and since then the mw's have been saying its the right way around but they aren't certain and I'm 3/5's engaged, helpful eh?

Have phoned the consultant today. She discharged me at 20 weeks but said that if I am worried about anything to give her secretary a call. There is a few other things that don't seem to have been done either like my 28 week blood test. Anyway have given her sec a call and am waiting for a reply. Hopefully, will be having a scan to see.

If I do end up having an elective I will be upset to, was going to say gutted but don't think thats the right term to use! Would rather have an elective than an undiagnosed breech though, just so that I can get things sorted out at home with DH and DS.

growingbagpuss · 26/06/2007 12:34

16 ? Good God Uki! I think my max was 10 with DS, and only when he was poorly.....

DS has just spent the morning playing v strange games with trains and duvets - and then runing up to me and giving me kisses aaaaaah . Glad someone loves me!

growingbagpuss · 26/06/2007 12:36

I second that Mum2Goerge - you CAN still have a natural birth with a breech baby - but the risks are higher.

If the worst comes to the worst, at least an electve c section is less stress than an emergency one!

growingbagpuss · 26/06/2007 12:36

That didn't come out right.

hope you all know what I mean.

kiteflying · 26/06/2007 12:39

mum2george, I am v impressed. Yes, I have had a slight concern that being a first timer and ignorant I might labour at home a bit too long and not actually make it to hospital before crowning! But equally have been warned that the first stage can go a long time if it is your first and staying at home as long as possible can help keep you calm and rested etc.

If you are booking an elective c-section can you not instead plan for a c-section after going into labour naturally? We were told at our ante-natal class that this was a good option as it meant the baby was more prepared for birth and had lots of endorphins from labouring to help its first few hours.

kiteflying · 26/06/2007 12:49

Annie75 - there are loads of natural things to help baby turn as I understand it and if you are at the right hospital they will offer you acupuncture and moxi sticks - the works. Our yoga teacher also said that some babies don't turn until you are actually in labour and it is worth holding out till then.

What about another mumsnetter's advice to get daddy to talk to the base of your uterus?

JSer · 26/06/2007 12:51

HI Annie

Mine is breech too. I'm about a week or so behind you I think (32 1/2 wks). I bought a yoga in pg book (on sale in borders for 1.99!). there was a few things in there about helping baby to move. Not sure if it'll work but worth a try i reckon!! First one: stand with legs apart and knees slightly bent. Reach arms up above head and gently circle upper torso (it says as if you were swinging a rope above your head). The other was to stand with feet facing forward, lift up one knee in front as high as comfortable, gently move it to the side and then kick gently to the back, bring it back to the fron and lower and repeat on other side. DOes this make any sense at all? It's hard to describe without pics! I think there's still time - up to 36 weeks and my m/w reassured me that the baby's head is 1/4 of it's weight so gravity should do the trick. Good Luck - have you thought anything about the manipulation to turn it? sounds a bit gruesome but might be preferable to a c-section...anyone any expereince of this?

Sorry for epic yoga post that's probably not much use!!

JSer · 26/06/2007 12:53

Oh you're supposed to do yogic breathing too but i'm a bit of a beginner and haven't got my head round that bit yet!

mum2george · 26/06/2007 12:54

Kite, I shouldn't worry about being at home too long. I phoned the hospital twice to see if they wanted me in and the third time I phoned them to tell them I was on my way! I think you know when you need assistance. I also think that they thought I was making a bit of a fuss until they finally examined me and I was 7cms. Perhaps thats why I wasn't coping on the paracetamol and baths they had been suggesting?

And yes, it is much better for you and baby if you labour for a least a little while. I just want to be prepared both mentally and at home if I need a section at all. Ideally, the baby will be the right way around and will just pop out, perhaps in my sleep! Oh, well we can all dream.

mum2george · 26/06/2007 13:13

Growing, I know what you mean, no worries!

kiteflying · 26/06/2007 13:15

mum2george, Thanks and I am sure you are right - the intuition will be working at full strength on the day I think.

I hope your baby moves for you (and Annie). There are loads of yoga moves for "optimal foetal positioning". Maybe go for a class or two.

bananabump · 26/06/2007 13:21

Hi guys, just got back from my growth scan and everything is now spot on normal, baby is on the 50th percentile growthwise, and head down. They reckon he currently weighs about 4 1/2 lb so it looks like he'll be about 7 1/2 lb at term is he carries on growing nicely.

Went to see consultant afterwards, who said that since I was despicably healthy apart from my weight, perhaps I should be under midwife led care now. She discussed it with the head consultant who ummed and aahed for a bit then said he wants to scan me again in 4 weeks to check he's still head down etc, but if he is I'm going to push for midwife led care since there's sod all wrong with me!

Thanks for all the advice on nappies, there IS a nappy laundry service in Wrexham in fact, I think it works out at £8 a week, is that more or less than disposables? Not sure I like the thought of smelly nappies sitting around in a bucket for a week at a time, though.

myweegirl · 26/06/2007 13:24

about the breach positions - i remember with my frist pregnancy watching all these programs about pregancy and birth and the one thing that had a 100% success rate with turning breach babies was where incense sticks were burned between the toes - but i can't remember any more details than that - which really isn't very helpful - sorry!

my friends sister gave birth to a 'double breach' (bum first) baby in january this year - but they didn't know baby had turned. the midwife kept saying i can see the head - 'it's completely bald, no hair whatsoever'! she had no interventions and no tears (another friend put it very tactfully and said she must have been very stretchy...)

myweegirl · 26/06/2007 13:25

that's good news bananabump

kiteflying · 26/06/2007 13:34

for bananabump. You go girl!

GillL · 26/06/2007 13:37

I wouldn't worry about knowing when to go into hospital. You will know because you can't cope with the pain anymore. I phoned the hospital after my waters broke with dd just to let them know. I phoned up about an hour later to say I was in a lot of pain and they told me to stay at home longer. I phoned again an hour later and again they told me to stay at home (as it had only been about 3 hours) but I told them I was coming in. When I got there I could hardly walk for the pain and had to be wheeled up to the maternity unit. I was 2cm when I got there and 10cm 40 minutes later. I was terrified they were going to send me home but I was in constant pain and could hardly move. If I had listened to the midwife dd would have been born at home.

bananabump · 26/06/2007 13:40

Cheers! it's been a week of good luck actually, maternity money coming through, house finally getting in some sort of order, baby on target and consultant sick of seeing me lol... toothache is fading too and so I'm getting more sleep. Yay!

Hope everyone else is doing ok, too.

GillL · 26/06/2007 13:40

Good for you banana. I've got a growth scan on Wednesday and a consultant appointment on Thursday. I'm hoping I will be referred back to midwife led care. The consultant should make a decision as to whether I can have my home birth or not - if the baby's not too big (assuming I get to 37 weeks).

bananabump · 26/06/2007 13:44

Best of luck with it Gill! Hope you get your homebirth and everything goes smoothly. God, don't start talking about popping before 37 weeks... that's 2 1/2 weeks away for me! 2 weekends! 2 big brother evictions!!!! lol

lizziemun · 26/06/2007 13:45

I am also breech, but i not to worried as DD was breech also.

I didn't know if DD had turned as i was due to see midwife the day i had her (made the midwife at the hospital ring and say sorry that i wouldn't make the appointment.

I am hoping for the same labour as last time.

Backache for 24 hours not painfull just uncomfortable. Had a good night sleep 10pm to 6.30am went to the loo then felt like something went pop and started bleeding. Called DH to take me to hospital after i had phoned them as i was not having any contractions. Got to the hospital by 7am was examined by the doctor at about 8am was 8cm dilated still no contractons. Midwife gave me a petherdine injection (without asking will be making it more clear not to give me unless i ask for it this time) was a sleep again from about 9am to 2pm only had about 5 contractions to push dd out 2.13pm she was 9lb 4oz.

growingbagpuss · 26/06/2007 13:46

Gilll - mine was v similar - my waters broke and I rang the hosp as booked for homebirth = when finally contractions started they got bad v quick. when i finally rang the labour ward, i had 3 while i was on the phone!!

Hersetta · 26/06/2007 13:58

Banana - great news. I have my growth scan and consultants appointment next Thursday so hope they go as well as yours.

My NCT classes start tonight. Anyone already been on some this time around? How were they?

GillL · 26/06/2007 14:01

lizziemun - my mum says she only had back pain during her labours.

growingbagpuss - I don't know which I'd prefer between longer labour with less intense pain at first or shorter labour being in agony. Perhaps I'll get to find out if this lo takes longer to arrive.
