Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
annobal · 09/06/2007 12:02

Huge congratulations to Derlor - love the birth story, I hope mine is that quick!

Congratulations also to Twinkle - looking forward to hearing all about it!

Am on my second bowl of cereal, catching up on MN while watching DH mow the lawn (and offering helpful advice from the sidelines).

We have the opposite problem with parents and in-laws - London seems to be a bit too far from ILs from Manc and my parents are in oz!

TALLULAHBELLE · 09/06/2007 12:12

annobal - Know what you mean about lack of family around. At least my parents are nearby but IL's so far away & DH v. upset that LO will be months old before they get to meet it. There is no way they will come here so falls to me to make that huge trip with new baby. Not looking fw to the flying involved but needs must.

trendaverter · 09/06/2007 12:46

Same same, my IL's are in Australia and have so far avoided saying one way or the other if they are going to come here after LO is born (which means they won't).

They think that we are loaded (!) and we will go there instead, but the fact of the matter is, we can't afford it for a couple of years yet.

Sad but what can you do? They won't come here because FIL is a control freak scared of planes and leaving his comfort zone, and we can't afford the flights and accomodation out there.

riabutterflew · 09/06/2007 12:46

My ILs are only an hour away but it's doubtful they will bother to visit anyway. They haven't been to our house to see the boys since Easter 2006. Bollocks to them. (I am trying to persuade DH not to ring them immediately with the news - not until the next day - as when we told them about being PG firstly they weren't very impressed and ssecondly got immediately on the phone to tell DHs daughter before he had a chance. I want him to ring her first and let her ring them! I am the evil DIL from hell, but I don't care, they treat DH like shit.)

Am going to change the sheets on our bed - that should get things going! and then off to Tesco (hope that doesn't!)

foxybrown · 09/06/2007 12:57

Derlors "Well that was a piece of piss" has had me laughing all morning!

trendaverter · 09/06/2007 13:19

Change of subject.
Has anyone told close friends/family their name shortlists? Positive/negative responses?

I told mine and people then saw fit to advise me some 'better' names.

riabutterflew · 09/06/2007 13:53

When DS2 was born we did tell my parents first, and the name we eventually chose my M wasn't keen on because she thought it sounded a bit like my aunties name, but she loves it now. My FIL said it was a girls name and he would never use it and would call him by his middle name - he hasn't ever and does use his first name, but he said that after he was born. Not that I give a stuff about his opinion.

Sorry, we were changing the subject.

Have only told you lot and responses were positive! Only you can decide.

lulumama · 09/06/2007 13:55

daisy gorgeous pics!

any more babies , ladies??

trendaverter · 09/06/2007 14:06

ooh I don't care if they like my name choices or not

Just curious! Seems to be a 'delicate area' from what I can make out.

hollyandalice · 09/06/2007 14:31

Afternoon!

Congrats to twinkle! Hope all is well with you and your new small person!!

Lovely pics daisy, Emily is beautiful and that one with her and mystic red ranger is soooo cute!!

Dp is painting the ceiling and dd is at gps, so I shall be sitting on my arse for a while now! It's soooo hot and stuffy. I am sweaty and cranky !

Congrats Delor "piece of piss!!!!" Must mention that to my ladies! lol

Congrats Twinkle.

foxybrown · 09/06/2007 15:58

Hmm, the old name thing.

Basically if my MIL likes it, I don't go with it

So far they've poo-pooed everything. DS1 was already named before they knew about it and FIL said "He'd better be either a fast runner or a good fighter". (git).

My mum just goes on and on about names, none of which I like. She'll list them for about 10 mins, I'll say "no" ,"no" ,"no" then she gets the hump.

Elsie is our top choice for this one, and NOBODY likes it but us!

trendaverter · 09/06/2007 16:39

Doesn't matter who likes it as long as you do!!

We have tried to avoid any names in the recent top 20 lists as I don't think it's very fair - also, any names that sound daft when used with our surname and any initials that look a bit suss. Basically, avoiding cruel!

But I think to each their own, if we all liked the same names then how boring would the school playground be?!

Another thing that freaks me out a little bit is the new thing about totally messing with the spelling of a normal/common name, ie, turning Megan into Meghaene.

I feel sorry for the schoolteachers

riabutterflew · 09/06/2007 16:50

I thin Elsie is nice. My grannies sister was called Elsie. I like Jessie (my grans name) but DH won't have it as a first name. Iris is my top choice for a girl, but I wonder if I don't like it as much since Mel B used it as a middle name.

I'm quite into the theory if MIL hates it I love it. Nice one foxy. As good as derlors "piece of piss". What a jolly sort of day.

Poor DH just gone dragging his heels back to work. He loved the interview, said it was a gorgeous place, BUT he's over-qualified and the man was concerned he would get bored. Bless him, I think he would love to be bored if he was getting paid for it! He is desparate for this baby to make an appearance.

Am off to make proper chips and frozen burgers X2 for our tea!!! Call the food police.

hollyandalice · 09/06/2007 16:56

Foxy I lurve Elsie, it is so cute and old fashioned and unusual! That's why we went for Alice for dd. My mum has very good taste in names and likes all the ones we have chosen, but I supposed because they are all old fashioned English names they are quite difficult not to like!

We have to be quite careful with the surname thing as well because dp's surname starts with an O, so no B names!!

Hope everyone is having a good day. It's horrible and really hot and close here. So glad dd is at my parents', I really don't think I could have handled her today!

hollyandalice · 09/06/2007 16:59

I love Iris too ria! Don't we all have great taste in names?! Violet was one of my fave girls' names and Lydia.

Is it too early for a glass of wine??!!

OP posts:
foxybrown · 09/06/2007 17:21

no, been on the cooking sherry since 11am myself

trendaverter · 09/06/2007 17:24

Actually I really like all those names, Iris, Elsie, Alice - it's so nice to have pretty names - I do get a bit freaked out at all the 'Skylars' and I think that some names have sadly become too common, like Madison

hollyandalice · 09/06/2007 17:38

We are going to get dd in a bit, so I'd best wait til we get home to start drinking! My dad will tell me off! He is "MR SAFETY"!!

Yes TA some names really freak me out! One of my friends at work wanted to have a little girl and call her Tanisha?! Did anyone see this thread? Made me PMSL!!

OP posts:
TALLULAHBELLE · 09/06/2007 18:34

We are deliberately not telling anyone our choice of names - plus we can't agree anyway. Have only said names that we like but know won't choose. Figure that people will give their opinion now but once baby is named will have to say 'Oh Ermintrude, how lovely'.

trendaverter · 09/06/2007 18:48

We did tell people our shortlist and after feeling very judged and criticised I thought sod it, and now we have decided which ones we like best we're not telling anyone!

Where is everyone? Have they all melted in the heat?

Have told eveyone DH's first choice - Matilda- cos I don't like it. It received mixed reviews to say the least & I had hoped it would put him off but he doesn't care.

trendaverter · 09/06/2007 19:05

Yes it's so humid here I have sweat running off me, I feel really sexy

I just read that thread Holly, good grief I am going to keep my mouth shut about names!!
