So I’m just over 16 weeks now and have started sleeping on my side as I was finding contradicting information about when this should be started. Some were saying from the second trimester and some were saying from about 20 weeks.
I’ve bought a special pillow which is amazing and without it there’s no way I would stay on my side (I sleep on my back like a corpse) but I’m waking up with pains in my hip and lower back.
I’ve got the pillow between my legs for support and I’ve tried lots of different ways. Anyone got any tips?

Hey magical.... I'm finding it really uncomfortable lying in my left side I keep getting shooting/aching pains on that side when I'm lying down 😖

MagicalCreatures · 14/07/2018 07:52

Morning @December2018 😁
I know they say the left side is better but I don’t think it’s totally necessary all night. Have you tried switching to the right. I find I’m switching between my left and right throughout the night but by early morning I’m waking up with the pain nomatter which way I lay. X

@MagicalCreatures I just sleep which ever way is comfortable. I'm nearly 18weeks. I naturally sleep on my front (but to the side) and can't now. I'm finding my right side is my go to side. But my back is more comfortable. Not sure why we can't lie on our backs. I'm sure if baby was uncomfortable it would send a pain which would wake us and make us turn. I Dunno. I switch between the two as well but struggle to sleep through.

MagicalCreatures · 14/07/2018 08:40

@Cakelaur I know, I’m sure there wasn’t all this research done years ago into what we can and can’t do. But there’s a vein or something that runs down the spine that if baby puts too much pressure on it, it can cause lots of problems for the Mum. And something to do with the baby stopping blood and oxygen supple to the placenta. It apparently can raise the chances of stillbirth. I’m just not taking any risks x

@magicalcreatures I’d forgotten about that! Only a few hours until we know!

I’ve always slept on my side anyway, but in the last few weeks I’ve found my right side comfier than my left. Is it possible with your pillow to just put it under one leg? When I sleep on my side, I keep my bottom leg straight but bend my top leg, so you’d be sort of mounting the pillow with that top leg. I tend to pop the duvet between my legs (drives dh mad) but the pillow would have the same sort of effect.

AGirlinLondon · 14/07/2018 08:57

Hey guys - yes the inferior vena cava on your left side - if it gets squashed by the weight of the uterus then it can affect oxygen transport to the baby. We learned about it in first aid - if a pregnant lady collapses she has to be laid on her left. BUT varying advice on how big your bump has to be (Tommy’s say third trimester) for this to matter. And also apparently any sort of lift makes it better - so a pillow under your left hip for example would help. I make myself a little trench - one pillow in front to hug and one behind to stop me from rolling. Sort of works!! But don’t freak out too much. Think sleeping on my back is going to make me feel squashed anyway soon so good practice.

JustCallMeTheOven · 14/07/2018 10:36

Sleeping has been a nightmare for me too but I'm using pillows and a pregnancy pillow to try and make sure I have support all around xx

Wiggle4 · 14/07/2018 10:58

18 + 1 today and been awake since half 4 in panic. Every reason possible! Did a doppler at my friends the other day that was only 120, my last baby was still born due to placenta dysfunction now I think that's why the heart rate was low the other day. Barely feeling any movement, this also happened last time as baby was so small. I am just panicking so much all the time x

JustCallMeTheOven · 14/07/2018 11:41

@Wiggle4 id say to contact the local maternity unit, it's better to have them check and everything be okay than you be stressing xx

JustVent · 14/07/2018 12:56

Wiggle are you able to book a private scan?

I booked a ‘gender scan’ last week but truth be told it was purely for reassurance. They checked everything, the placenta, the cord, all his organs. It was very good. It also showed all the extreme movement that I couldn’t feel!

Gemsie1984 · 14/07/2018 13:22

@Wiggle4 - sorry you're feeling like this, however given your past experience I'm not surprised. Definitely give your maternity unit a call to get them to check you over. Explain your feelings and maybe they'll even scan you for reassurance. I'm 19 weeks tomorrow and the last few days have been crippled with anxiety. I've an anterior placenta so not feeling lots of movement and I'm convinced he's not moving and when I'm scanned in August 1st he'll be tiny. Don't feel like my belly is growing either. Such a horrible feeling so I empathise completely as you must be feeling so much worse. Big hugs x

MagicalCreatures · 14/07/2018 13:33

@Stephisaur @AGirlinLondon I’m happy to give anything a shot. I’ve got a big 9ft long U shaped pillow which is amazing and I hug the front, put it between my legs and have it behind so I don’t roll back so I’m fully supported. But I’ve had pains in my shins and knees all day. Don’t think this is going to be easy.
And Thankyou for confirming about the vena cava. I thought maybe I’d dreamt it. 😂 I’m gonna try do abit more research x

@wiggle4, You have to look after yourself and not be stressed. Go for a scan. NHS or private. I had 2 small bleeds and the NHS genuinely wanted to see me urgently both times, so don't worry about how you sound

raysan1 · 14/07/2018 13:49

Has anyone heard of www.babyboxuniversity.com/home? It is a free gift for parents-to-be and ensures that baby has a safe place to sleep. Also comes with lots of advice videos (CPR, car seats, smoking, bonding with dad) and other freebies. Was a huge hit in Finland and has moved here!
Have just ordered mine :-)

Stephisaur · 14/07/2018 14:41

@wiggle4 could you afford a private scan? We’ve been for one today and it really is reassuring 💕

In other news, we are officially team blue 💙

MagicalCreatures · 14/07/2018 14:48

@Stephisaur ahhhhhh oh my god. Congrats. 😂 this is actually getting really funny now. These little boys are gonna rule the world x

Wiggle4 · 14/07/2018 14:50

Awww congratulations @Stephisaur on your little boy!

@Gemsie1984 you sound very similar to me, I have anterior placenta too. There is no good reason for me to be worried I just can't help it. I had a scan at 16 and a half weeks and everything including placenta blood flow was fine!

We could have a private scan but I know my consultant would see us nhs if I needed to. OH doesn't think we need to though

Thanks everyone! Just having a bad day with it all! I know we all get the anxiety and it's nice to know I'm not alone in it!

Stephisaur · 14/07/2018 14:56

@wiggle4 sending happy wiggly baby vibes your way

Stephisaur · 14/07/2018 14:57

@Magicalcreatures imagine if England had won the World Cup though, they’d all be called Harry 😂

InNeedOfALieInNow · 14/07/2018 19:52

I’ve ordered a baby box too - I’ve had Moses baskets for both babies and both hated them so we’ve got rid of it and am going to use the box this time. In honesty most of mine had daytime sleeps in the sling or pushchair as with older kids you have to be out and about more out of necessity. But love the idea of the babybox and the fact it’s only cost me postage so I won’t be cross if this baby won’t sleep in it!

InNeedOfALieInNow · 14/07/2018 19:54

@wiggle4 step away from the Doppler! Do call your midwife and ask to be seen, and/or ask for a referral to the mental health midwife - the more support you can get the better. It’s worrying enough without your worries having been a reality previously and the midwives I’m sure will want to help. Hope you’re ok

Wanttomakemincepies · 14/07/2018 21:52

Vena cava is on your right. It returns your blood to your heart.
