Hey lovely ladies. Thanks for the messages of concern, to be honest, I'm totally cool, I love it in fact! I'd train as a paramedic if in my job description it said that I didn't have to deal with children or babies!!! Or do horrible shifts
I must admit I was slightly worried about how my DH would be feeling. He was sitting in the car watching it all happening. As soon as the paramedics took control I left the scene, it was at that point that the helicopter landed right next to my DH sitting in the car. The first thing he said to me was 'You the Man!!!!!!!!!!!' It's the first time he's seen me 'in action' and was very impressed . I asked him if he was feeling weird watching the helicopter land and he said he was absolutely fine, and he is.
TBH before I was an instructor I used to fall to pieces as a First Aider, but having instructed SO many courses I almost go into role play mode. It's just learning to prioritise casualties/injuries. 4 B's, Breathing, Bleeding, Bones and Burns.
I have a funny First Aid story for you..... I was instructing a 2 day refresher course in London. It was day 2, and my delegates had finished their exam paper and I sent them for a break before the assessors were arriving. Anyway, 1 of the delegates came rushing into the room and said, Nicky Nicky, Julie's just fallen down the stairs..... I'm sitting there waiting for the punch line, when he runs off. OK so this is real I'm thinking. SO I go down the corridor to find Julie sprawled at the bottom of a very long flight of stairs. It seems she had fallen from the very top (and she was a very big girl- ouch), so we call the ambulance and sit and wait with her. One of my stupid (sorry) delegates offers her a drink of water, at which point the other two shouted NO!!!! I'd taught them well!! Well next thing the assessors turn up (who are also First Aid instructors), they took one look... and LEG IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then the paramedics turn up, and couldn't actually believe that we were in the middle of a first aid course, they nearly wet themselves laughing. PS Julie was fine, mild concussion!
MrsMar, I'm sure you'd be totally cool given your training background.
Re: child and baby resusc. I know there have been some huge protocol changes over the past couple of years. But to make it easy for you.....
Chest compressions
Baby (age 0-1)- 2 fingers
Child (age 1-8) - 1 hand
Adult (age 8+)- 2 hands
Breaths
Baby - breath over both mouth and nose
child - mouth or nose
adult - mouth or nose
And it's all about maintaining an open airway!
I miss first aid training.... can you tell??
Bicester Village - I bought myself a lovely Kipling Handbag, and DH chose a FANTASTICKLY cool bag which we will use as a baby bag
Kinki - flush it flush it flush it!!! Then you HAVE to get some new glasses
