Is everyone shopping now? (well done HIWBB btw, how are you?)
I'm sort of looking around for a double pram/pushchair and I'm scared of e-bay.
Yikes.
I'm hoping mothercare come up with a fantastic new range in August, fingers crossed, eh?
I also keep hassling flamingsparrow for advice as I need to re-stock on wraps etc. Have added it all up and it comes to £150.
Although am buying for three (baby, toddler and 5 (yes 5) yr old)

sophus · 18/06/2007 14:02

i'm trying to spend the big money before i go on mat leave as i'm not grown up enough to save the money from now. Aalso some stuff we want has a six week delivery so thought we should order it now. apart from cot/pram other stuff will wait until later.

seamonster · 18/06/2007 14:09

Have just noticed it is pouring with rain and my rain caoat doesn't fit anymore...

Hopeitwontbebig · 18/06/2007 14:35

Hey lovely ladies. Thanks for the messages of concern, to be honest, I'm totally cool, I love it in fact! I'd train as a paramedic if in my job description it said that I didn't have to deal with children or babies!!! Or do horrible shifts

I must admit I was slightly worried about how my DH would be feeling. He was sitting in the car watching it all happening. As soon as the paramedics took control I left the scene, it was at that point that the helicopter landed right next to my DH sitting in the car. The first thing he said to me was 'You the Man!!!!!!!!!!!' It's the first time he's seen me 'in action' and was very impressed . I asked him if he was feeling weird watching the helicopter land and he said he was absolutely fine, and he is.

TBH before I was an instructor I used to fall to pieces as a First Aider, but having instructed SO many courses I almost go into role play mode. It's just learning to prioritise casualties/injuries. 4 B's, Breathing, Bleeding, Bones and Burns.

I have a funny First Aid story for you..... I was instructing a 2 day refresher course in London. It was day 2, and my delegates had finished their exam paper and I sent them for a break before the assessors were arriving. Anyway, 1 of the delegates came rushing into the room and said, Nicky Nicky, Julie's just fallen down the stairs..... I'm sitting there waiting for the punch line, when he runs off. OK so this is real I'm thinking. SO I go down the corridor to find Julie sprawled at the bottom of a very long flight of stairs. It seems she had fallen from the very top (and she was a very big girl- ouch), so we call the ambulance and sit and wait with her. One of my stupid (sorry) delegates offers her a drink of water, at which point the other two shouted NO!!!! I'd taught them well!! Well next thing the assessors turn up (who are also First Aid instructors), they took one look... and LEG IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then the paramedics turn up, and couldn't actually believe that we were in the middle of a first aid course, they nearly wet themselves laughing. PS Julie was fine, mild concussion!

MrsMar, I'm sure you'd be totally cool given your training background.

Re: child and baby resusc. I know there have been some huge protocol changes over the past couple of years. But to make it easy for you.....

Chest compressions
Baby (age 0-1)- 2 fingers
Child (age 1-8) - 1 hand
Adult (age 8+)- 2 hands

Breaths
Baby - breath over both mouth and nose
child - mouth or nose
adult - mouth or nose

And it's all about maintaining an open airway!

I miss first aid training.... can you tell??

Bicester Village - I bought myself a lovely Kipling Handbag, and DH chose a FANTASTICKLY cool bag which we will use as a baby bag

Kinki - flush it flush it flush it!!! Then you HAVE to get some new glasses

FilBrit - good luck with your GT test. I've got mine in a couple of weeks, I'm NOT looking forward to it... URGH!

MrsMar · 18/06/2007 15:26

HIWBB - that's so funny about all the first aiders!! I'm sure the girl who fell down the stairs was glad you were there! Thanks for the info about baby resuss... It's always good to know, but I pray I'll never need it!

Well the builders have gone for the day (of course, because it's sooo late - 3pm - and they got here soooo early - 11am!!!) so I can finally have a cup of tea and know I can go to the loo if I need to. I've spent the day using every loo I can find, even if I don't need it, I squeeze out a few drops just in case! I even went to the library on the pretext of getting some more recycling bags so I could use their loo! Thank goodness the builders have left the loo plumbed in for the moment so we can use it when they're gone.

I have gone shopping crazy! I can't stop spending.. help me!!!! Today I bought a sheepskin for the pushchair, some bibs, bath towels with hoods for the baby, and one of these !! I was supposed to be buying a bathroom cabinet (which I failed to do) when I got distracted by the giant mothercare in Croydon! Argh!! Right that's it for this month, I can't afford any more stuff now!! It's terrible, it's so addictive. I'm normally so sane, I don't even have any credit cards or loans, but I think I've spent my entire salary this month already. Dh is still recovering from the sheep that makes womb noises I bought on saturday, best not tell him about today's purchases. It'll be our little secret right??!!

sophus · 18/06/2007 15:38

mrs mar - i have one of those egg thingummies, and all it has done for me is prove that our house is an apparent sauna, even though all our windows are permanently open and i never have the heating on, don't know how i'm going to get the nursery down to the accepted 16-20.
i had my lucozade challenge last week - i love lucozade so it was no problem for me. just waiting for results now, and eating chocolate galore in case they tell me i can't have any more for rest of pregnancy.

kinki · 18/06/2007 16:03

I don't get to buy much this time round as this one is ds3.

But I have managed to convince dh that we need 2 new prams, oh and a moses basket. We never had our own moses basket, we were lent one before but not this time. Ds2 will be 2.5ish when baby is born and I've wondered if we'll need a double buggy. He walks everywhere, but there'll be times when I would want him contained, eg shopping, evenings out, travelling etc, so decided to go for it. The pram we used for ds1&2 is an old style graco travel system. It old and served it's purpose, but this time I want one with a carrycot. Anyway, got the pram, double buggy and moses basket from ebay all for less than £98. All new too. Bargain! I think that's all we'll need.

EdieMcredie · 18/06/2007 16:05

Well done HIWBB, Im a nurse so also know first aid. It's a great skill to have.

All those embarassing stories are really good! Keep 'em coming

Well I was elbowed in the stomach by a patient on Sat (baby and me fine) so today my boss went mad and basically my job is now uber easy til I go off on mat leave in 3 weeks. He basically doesn't want me on the ward at all so will just be doing community work which is less stressful at the moment. Im dead chuffed.

Is anybody else experiencing wierd aches in pelvic/vaginal/thigh area? I have read about that SPD but don't think it's that. TBH it just feels like ive done too much walking but it's horrible!!

MrsMar · 18/06/2007 16:05

I'm doing exactly the same as you sophus, currently my bedroom is 21.7 degrees and I've got the window open!! Mind you in three months I reckon we won't have to worry about the sauna effect on our babies.

MrsMar · 18/06/2007 16:11

Edie - considering I've got a badly damaged disc in my back I was expecting much more back pain than I've experienced so far. However, when I've over done it a bit the sensation I get is like I've fallen on my coccyx, or fallen down the stairs on my bum. It's not agony, just uncomfortable, and I know back agony, when it's so painful I literally cannot move, frozen on the spot because every move feels like knives being shoved into my spine!

Another wierd pain I've had twice now when I've really over done it and been on my feet for hours is like a sharp burning pain on my inner thigh, high up, right by the crease of my leg. It's like something hot has been applied to the skin. I reckon it must be a nerve or something, as it doesn't feel muscular. It goes almost immediately I sit down, so it's not bothering me too much.

How lovely that work are being so good and relaxing your work load. And only three weeks to mat leave, that's even better!!! (mind you, you obviously do a job that is quite physically demanding, me, I usually sit down on my big fat bum all day!)

MrsFish · 18/06/2007 16:48

Well, I have a spare few minutes so will continue my embarrassing story...

Just to set the scene - As I said, I was out cold in my dh's bed by 7pm (the relationship was very new, and this was the first time I had met all his friends) Well apparently he came to check on me later on in the evening as I was in a right state which is where the mortifyingly embarrassing incident took place, when he told me the next morning, I nearly left his house and never looked back. I had gotten out of bed the next morning and put my foot in a wet patch by the side of the bed, I asked him if I had thrown up in the night (really cannot remember a thing) nope it was much much worse... apparently I had got out of bed whilst he was there and said I needed to use the toilet, he pointed me in the direction of the en-suite bathroom approx 5 yards away... but I didn't want to use that it would seem, he then said I had pulled down my knickers, squatted and did it on the carpet then got back in bed and passed out again.

I can't believe we got married 4 years later, I very nearly fled without a backwards glance.

MrsMar · 18/06/2007 16:51

wow mrsfish, that is a good 'un. I thought I'd done everything to my dh, but that's so funny. He must love you so much!

Hopeitwontbebig · 18/06/2007 17:02

Respect to Mrs Fish, that's impressive.

seamonster · 18/06/2007 18:47

nice...

Oh god. Ds1's creepy friend has come round (again).
(waiting and listening nervously, he's the sort to walk in uninvited...)
It's ok, Ds doesn't want to play as he is watching deadly dozen. Not that he's allowed at this time.
(he goes through drawers and cupboards and tries to make off with things.)

Ds is back watching marginally less creepy creatures on tv.

amyclaramum · 18/06/2007 21:04

Hi Everyone - hope you all had a good weekend ? HIWBB - i am really impressed with your story and feel inspired to go on a first aid course as I am completely clueless about what to do in an emergency!
I have got a hideous cold and have lost my voice too - feeling really sorry for myself as I was ill all weekend (had to miss the 70's party ) and DH is away all week in Hong Kong coming back on my birthday !But all your embarassing stories are cheering me up !!

trinity1 · 18/06/2007 22:56

Hi all, have had an excellent weekend. It was DD's first birthday on Saturday, a joint party with her grandad who was 60. Got very emotional as I can't believe how fast a year has passed. Only problem was I couldn't drink, while everyone else was getting hammered! DD slept through until 10am on Sunday (a rare lie-in!) Then had a lazy day. Like everyone on this thread I feel like I've been pregnant forever and can't wait for September to roll around!

Can anyone recommend a tandem buggy I can buy as DD will be 14 months by the time DD#2 arrives. Have been looking around but can't make up my mind! DP's parents have offered to pay but I don't want to take the p! xxx

laksa · 19/06/2007 09:25

Mrsfish, that is a classic, everyone should have stories like this up their sleeve

loobybump · 19/06/2007 10:38

Good morning girlys hope everyone is well. I'v got cramping pains but on the left side of my bump does any one know what that is. im not sure and dont want to phone midwife as dont want to be a drama queen. when its probably nothing but its v painfull the pain has got worse since 7am.? anyone>?

seamonster · 19/06/2007 10:46

it could be your muscles and tendons stretching. Don't worry about contacting your midwife, that's what they are trained (and paid) to do
I get cramp in my stomach from this, it's not great is it?
perhaps try a hot water bottle.

I'm looking for a double/tandem as well, I'm going more for a double as tandems can be harder on your back.

loobybump · 19/06/2007 10:49

Thank you. I think becasue iv never really had problems the second i felt these pains it worried me. the baby had been kicking lots so thats a good sign. it just freaking hurts with the cramping. I'm such a wimp how will i cope with labour! :-(

seamonster · 19/06/2007 10:52

labour pain isn't so sharp iyswim, and it usually builds up as opposed to full on ow!
try plain paracetamol and rest

ThomCat · 19/06/2007 10:54

You mad lot! I am far too pure to have any stories to share

It's not even that hot yet and the heat at night is doing me in already!
DD2 has chicken pox, waiting for DD1 to catch it.
Have a headache and hate all my maternity clothes!
Other than that it's all good.

I'm slightly wishing I could be pregnant until next Sept ember in some ways! Just don't feel ready for no 3 just yet! I know it'll all be fine but at the moment I dodn't know where anyone is going to sleep etc!

Heard the heart beat yesterday at midwife check up which is always lovely. DD2 was with me and she gasped and put her hands to her mouth and said 'uh-ohh', however the midwife set her straight and said it was a great heartbeat!
