I'm planning to use cloth nappies. I have bought a range of brands, some new and some pre loved. Some good FB groups... nappy lady and babipur to name a couple, lots of info. I've got some tots boys bamboozles, close popins, milovia, wonderoos... will see what works for us, they sell almost at RRP.
I will use reusable wipes also, so much better and easier to use than disposable. In hospital I will get cotton wool but the oval or square pads as the balls are rubbish.

Breastfeeding will definitely be going for it. I expressed antenatally and froze the colostrum which was really handy as DS needed it due to us both being unwell. BrF didn't work in the end for us due to a variety of reasons but really praying things are better this time

shaaan1329 · 02/10/2017 17:47

@Maybebaby2 Thank you for your words! It's reassuring to hear from someone who's been through it first hand that it can be done, hoping I can make a point to a lot of my unsupportive friends and family that I can do it and my little boy will be fine :)

MegRam · 02/10/2017 18:32

I am really not enjoying pregnancy today. Here's a rant...

I am so tired - a combination of PGP, cramp, heartburn and having to do a 10-point turn every time I want to rollover means that the quality of my sleep is unbearably poor. I'm normally a very good sleeper, so I'm not coping well at all.

I've been very emotional the last couple of days, and I feel like baby is growing so much I look more and more like a whale each day. I ache all over, I'm uncomfortable at my desk at work, my skin is dry and tight, and I feel overwhelmed by the amount we still have to do before she's here.

I know pregnancy is meant to be 'magical', and we're not meant to talk about this stuff because it's blah, but I'm just not feeling it at the moment. Surely something so natural should be easier than this?! Waaaaahh

Waitingonasmile · 02/10/2017 18:55

Totally agree with your rant MegRam. Pregnancy is definitely not easy!

26 weeks tomorrow. Feeling like a beach ball, or a Christmas bauble is probably more appropriate at this time of year.

I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by breastfeeding literature
I sometimes feel that the advocates of it are a little overbearing especially when put together with attachment style parenting.

It probably doesn’t help that all my family formula fed on schedules so that’s what they are advising. I’m not buying any formula stuff and they keep saying I should just in case.

I’m also worried about feeding in front of people but think I’ll just leave the room till I’m comfortable I can do it without flashing

Re dad bonding without feeding, I think there is loads they can do like nappies, skin to skin to help settle them after feeds etc

I have just read Michel Cohens book ‘the new basics’
His no fuss approach to things really seemed to make sense to me
I liked the way he spoke about breast feeding, night sleeping and discipline, no nonsense but also not too harsh either
It seemed to be more common sense
As this is our first I don’t know how things will go but this book has made me feel a little more comfortable

ForumUsername · 02/10/2017 19:25

On a completely different note I put a remote on my tummy last night while baby was moving
It was so much fun to watch it move when baby kicked
We were giggling loads which almost made it seem to get more active

I also feel I’ve gotten so big the past couple of weeks!! It feels so foreign and weird!
But DH has gotten more touchy feely, speaking to the bump, it’s definitely making up for the hugeness factor

SpringChicken26 · 02/10/2017 20:26

I’m so glad others feel the same about breastfeeding as I do !
I can’t bear the thought of breastfeeding with the in laws or even my parents in the room, especially as the in laws don’t live close so are likely to be staying for a few days in the first couple of weeks can’t think of anything worse than being stuck upstairs breastfeeding constantly ! Also think would be nice not having to worry about drinking coffee and having the occasional couple of glasses of wine and having to pump and dump after !
That being said all I’m getting from everyone is that I should at least try breast feeding for a few weeks and making me feel guilty ! And don’t really want to be stuck to a pump when I get 5 minutes to myself !
I’m quite interested in mixed feeding but need some advice !

ForumUsername · 02/10/2017 20:32

@SpringChicken26 I have read that some coffee and alcohol is ok while breast feeding
Alcohol goes into and out of breast milk the same as blood
So no need to pump and dump

SpringChicken26 · 02/10/2017 20:36

@ForumUsername I’m abit of a worrier so think I’d stick to avoiding if I was breastfeeding ! Need to find out all the dos and donts of bottle/breast to decide so insure at the moment !

Rosehyd2 · 02/10/2017 20:57

This may be TMI but Is anyone else suffering with diahhorea? I had it once saturday evening, then all of Sunday evening so bad I felt dizzy. I worked from home today in case it was a bug and I've been fine all day but dinner has made it happen again.
I've been fine up until this point, what's going on? Does it mean baby might not be getting the nutrients they need if it's passing through me?

Ruthcarr1990 · 02/10/2017 21:33

@SpringChicken26 my mother in law is being a pain about breast feeding!! It’s all she’s going on about!!

My dh isn’t my dd’s biological father, we only got together when she was 1. When I attempted to breast feed she wouldn’t latch on so had to use nipple cap things!! Don’t want to have to go threw the same thing as I did with her so decided to bottle feed. When I said I was bottle feeding was told I was stupid for saying I can’t do it!!! I no there are going to be arguments when I have the baby and she is just going to have sly digs. I know that it’s all going to end up with me flipping at her and I’ll just be seen as a cow for saying something!!! Cxx

SpringChicken26 · 02/10/2017 21:44

@ruthcarr1990 I know exactly how you feel with being ‘encouraged’/ blackmailed to breast feed !
All that matters is mum and baby are healthy I don’t see why people feel the need to interfere ! Even my childless friend who’s a social worker said I should at least try for few months or it’d be unfair to the baby !
I’ve also got to go back to work at 6 months so don’t really know how well bf/expressing would work with 14 hour shifts my breasts would be huge by the end of the day !!!!!

Ruthcarr1990 · 02/10/2017 21:56

@SpringChicken26 they really do make you feel bad!! I’m sticking to my guns!! I will try if it doesn’t work then he will be bottle fed!! I just know that there will be sly digs at me and I will end up loosing my rag but then I will be seen as the bad one!!
At the end of the day as long as I’m happy and the baby’s happy then that’s all that matters to me!! Did everyone else xxx

weasledee · 02/10/2017 22:35

Hi Ruth! Don’t know if you remember me, I had a loss at 14 weeks and we were going to be hospital room neighbours!
Well I’m 5 weeks pregnant again! Whoop! Smile

rememberpurpleronnie · 03/10/2017 07:12

@Ruthcarr1990 @SpringChicken26
I feel your pain- I've had a double mastectomy and I've already been asked if I plan to breast feed and been given a ton of literature on 'breast is best. ' I know I will end up having to announce my lack of breasts to the postnatal ward every time a breast feeding support worker comes around. Maybe I'll get a sign. Or any shirt with arrows saying 'these are silicon'.... Grin

Ruthcarr1990 · 03/10/2017 08:03

@weasledee congratulations!!!! Aww I’m made up for you!!! Xxx

weasledee · 03/10/2017 09:27

Thanks Ruth Smile

SJ1989 · 03/10/2017 12:08

Just had a call for a visit from the health visitor to introduce herself and explain the service they offer! Makes it all feel very close 😁

shaaan1329 · 03/10/2017 14:12

Feeling lousy today! Started feeling shaky and sweaty last night, had a few pains during the night that I have put down the general pregnancy aches and pains.. then woke up at 7 to be sick and twice since. Head is pounding, vision is spotty and I still feel nauseous.. and I can hear my heart beat in my head.. doctors appointment in half an hour hoping it's just a bug not anything serious :/

Waitingonasmile · 03/10/2017 14:54

Oh no @shaaan1329 that sounds scary. Fingers crossed all is ok!

Maybebaby2 · 03/10/2017 14:54

weasledee amazing news congratulations!!

shaaan hope you are feeling better soon. Good that you got a quick appointment and are getting checked over. Could just be a bug but it's worth checking.

hodgeheg and SpringChicken I'm glad (not glad but you know what I mean) I'm not the only one worrying about feeding, particularly the issue of feeding in front of family. I thought I was being a bit selfish with that one but it really does make me feel uncomfortable. From now on I'm going to try and not worry so much what other people say or think and start to focus in what will work best for me and baby. forumusername the book you mention sounds good, I'll have a read of that as I've not been given or recommended any literature on feeding so far.

MissyJones80s · 03/10/2017 15:08

shaaan how miserable you must feel. Glad you got Dr appointment hope all went okay xxx

Is this weird but had a 1-2-1 with line manager and we were talking about maternity and she said “what happens if, you know it doesn’t go so well and the baby dies”. Now in my logical mind I have also thought about this and thought perhaps I should look and find out but I went away and thought what a weird thing to say to someone who’s pregnant!!! She’s actually a really good boss so it was probably a case of not thinking before opening mouth but I just needed to share!!!

Mortigua · 03/10/2017 15:42

That was an odd and insensitive thing to say! Hope you're okay .

WLMcI · 03/10/2017 15:44

Thanks for the book recommendation @forumusername! The GRFB group here is giving us a feeding class, including breastfeeding, and there's a breastfeeding class at the hospital as well so I'm going to both. Can't hurt to be able to ask questions! I'd say a lot of the trepidation women feel about both childbirth and breastfeeding is from received knowledge, and that's prejudiced towards people who have had something dramatic happen--"I had a normal birth and no trouble breastfeeding after a couple weeks" doesn't make a very interesting story! The women in my family treat childbirth as something that is good to prepare for of course, but something that is perfectly reasonable to get through, not a huge traumatic scare story. I have to say that mentality has made me less worried about the whole process. No point borrowing trouble from other people's experiences when your own could be completely different.

@MissyJones what a bizarre thing to say!!! As someone who has lost a baby, the last thing I want is for everyone else to be reminding me about worst case scenarios just when I'm trying to keep myself positive. And she shouldn't have asked you anyway as you're unlikely to know the answer; she should ask HR if she has policy questions around bereavement.

@shan I hope it's nothing serious and you feel better quickly! That does sound awful. X
