Actually, should probably also mention that for some reason am exceptionally nervous about my scan this afternoon . Sure this is normal but feel really edgy. Still, fingers crossed eh.

Uki · 03/04/2007 11:33

I was very nervous before mine too, partly because worried about health of baby and hoping all was A Ok, but also beacuse we were finding out sex and i wasn't sure i wanted to know, It's a big thing really.
Good luck and enjoy seeing the LO.

tokentotty · 03/04/2007 11:41

Ah thanks UKI, think it's because I've never been famous for my good luck in life and this pg is going really well so can't believe there isn't going to be that big kick in the teeth somewhere along the line and that this is the point it's going to all go wrong , silly I'm sure, but will be shaking like a leaf until I can walk out with a smile. We're going to find out what flavour ours is too so I guess it's quite a big build up. Ah well, it'll all soon be over!!!

kiteflying · 03/04/2007 12:08

Morning all.

Poor lovelybird - get better soon. Hope all the wonderful endorphons brought on by your scan results helps your recovery along!

TT - don't blame you for being nervous about the scan but think of how wonderful it will be when you see the baby and it's fine and dancing away....I am sure everything is fine. Look at the state of your bump!! Let us know how it goes.

Katybird - let's catch up next time. I found the class a bit too "soft" - was it different to your first class? I thought maybe it was because there were at least three women who were days away from the event. I felt very "bump-less" but as you say there were three of us at about the same stage so that was nice. I don't think I have ever been in a room with so many pregnant women at once. I spend all my working life surrounded by men so it was extra odd - of course, in a nice way.

kiteflying · 03/04/2007 12:09

endorphins - sorry

conkertree · 03/04/2007 12:30

good luck tt -sure everything will be fine but i know its hard to think that until you see it for yourself on the screen.

i am quite jealous of those of you who know the flavours of your los already - i do like surprises, but still very hard to think of it as a person rather than an it when you dont know the flavour. but only around 17 weeks to go now so not too long to wait.

wish there was a yoga class round here - cant really find any antenatal exercise classes - water, yoga or otherwise.

bresha · 03/04/2007 12:30

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing ok
I have had my 20 week scan all is fine and we are having a boy
Dp is over the moon as he now gets to buy Lego and train sets , and he can feel little ones kicks now.
The last few months have gone really quick, can?t believe its Easter this week !!!! mmm looking forward to all the chocolate tho
Lovelybird- hope you start feeling better soon, i had the flu thing about a month ago was awful
tt- good luck with your scan, i am sure everything is fine, its perfectly normal 2 be nervous

tokentotty · 03/04/2007 12:38

Hey Bresha, glad you had a great scan and DP is happy with the toy purchasing he gets to do!!!
thanks for your good wishes for today, really appreciated xx
Now - a question. My midwife was telling me that I should try and save chocolate/sweets/treats etc for the weekend and be good in the week to try and avoid getting gestational diabetes. Now I honestly, honestly have tried but just can't help it - I need sweet stuff !! I hardly ever eat any when not pregnant but am compelled to eat it now and wondered if anyone had more knowledge about this than me (ie: any at all).

bresha · 03/04/2007 13:14

I have to confess tt that i eat something nice everyday

i googled gestational diabetes, hope this helps
Pregnancy diabetes is more likely:
? if you're older (over 25)
? if you're overweight
? if you smoke
? if there is a family history of diabetes
? if you're from a minority ethnic group.

If you are at increased risk for gestational diabetes, is there anything you can do to help prevent its occurrence?
The truth is that no one knows for sure. Few studies have focused on preventing gd through proactive health measures, and few physicians are trained enough in nutrition issues to use it proactively, preferring to deal with it once it appears instead. Traditionally, physicians' emphasis is on INTERVENTION instead of PREVENTION, and this is often particularly true in obstetrics. Thus most women, even those at most risk for gd, are not given much guidance about possibly ways to lower their risk. Most OBs prefer to simply test more often instead, hoping to catch it early.

There is some mixed evidence that careful attention to nutrition may help prevent at least some cases of Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension; could this also help with gestational diabetes?
Many midwives report anecdotally that they prevent or reduce the number and severity of gd cases through the use of proactive nutrition and exercise. Since this is 'only' anecdotal and not documented by double-blind, randomized studies, many physicians tend to dismiss the efficacy of this approach. However, it may be worth exploring further, especially if you have a number of risk factors for gd.

loler · 03/04/2007 13:24

Thanks for that - meant to look it up for myself as I've got to go for a glucose tolerance test to make sure I don't have this. As DS was over 10lb they routinely do it.

I was going to try really hard not to put any extra weight on this time but just can't stay away from the sweet stuff either!

OP posts:
tokentotty · 03/04/2007 13:25

Oh thanks Bresha that's really informative. As for those most 'at risk' bullet points, I am over 25 (will be 32 at the end of June) but I don't think I'm overweight. Unfortunately don't have any family medical history to look into, but I don't smoke and I'm not part of an ethnic minority so fingers crossed, those treats I can't resist won't push me too far over the edge! Other than having a bar of chocolate or bit of cake everyday I do eat pretty well.

katybird · 03/04/2007 15:10

Hi all, great to hear about the scans, I've got mine on Thursday, really nervous!

I'm eating a lot of sweet stuff too, but I've gone off chocolate, annoyingly. I thought it might be linked to cravings but I can't think of anything nutritional in jelly beans!

kiteflying - the yoga is quite soft, I was talking to one of the other girls last week and she wasn't very impressed when she started, think she did power yoga before, but now that she's due she's finding it much more useful! I guess it has to be suited to those who are due any day as well as us newbies. And it's designed to help with birth as well as just as exercise. I'm not too keen on the grunting though!

loler · 03/04/2007 15:20

I've got my scan on Thursday too - will be a busy day! Getting worried and excited. Also DH has got day off work so looking forward to a day to ourselves - a real treat!

Katy- grunting?

OP posts:
katybird · 03/04/2007 15:55

Good luck loler! DP was going to take the day off but he's so busy (we're going on holiday on Friday) that he's going to have to go in for the afternoon. I'll check in on Friday before we go though, to see how your scan went. Are you going to find out the flavour? We will, as long as baby's cooperating!

The grunting is part of the active birth philosophy - when the baby is about to be born you tilt your pelvis forwards to help it out in one movement, very important to keep your mouth open and make noise. All makes sense but a bit embarrassing practising in a room full of strangers, even if you are all doing it!

bananabump · 03/04/2007 19:26

Hi Guys,

Everyone got their easter eggs? I'm amazed how quickly they're selling out, Tesco's was a nightmare today!

How many boys and girls do we have so far? I'm interested because I was looking at this chinese birth calendar predictor thingy before I went for the scan.

Mine predicted it should be a boy (I'm 25 and I conceived in october) and the ultrasound agreed!

Anyone proved it wrong?

PurpleRabbit · 03/04/2007 20:44

Well I don't know what I'm having but I tried the predictor and it says a girl. Tried it with DS's details too and it got it right, so we'll see!

Katybird - really sympathise about the chocolate. I went right off it at the start (including right through Christmas ) and it's only beeen in the last few weeks that I've been able to enjoy it again. Hopefully it'll pass for you too.

lizziemun · 03/04/2007 21:39

Hello everyone,

Can i just ask if anyone else is having difficulty(sp) in sleeping or is it just me. I am 19weeks on thursday and i just can not get comfortable. I am getting stiff lower back, and some pain around my pelvis.

growingbagpuss · 03/04/2007 22:27

bananabump - mine says a boy too on that chinese calendar... right now I'll be pleased if it only has one head!! Anyone else get crazy irational fears just before scan? mine tommorow...

boobooma · 04/04/2007 08:29

Lizziemum, I'm also having a mare at night, its okay til about 4 or 5 then the lower back pain kicks in and I'm wriggling all over. Having a pillow between my knees helps a bit. Also having lots of baby dreams, got scan next wednesday and had a baby girl dream and baby boy dream in past few days.

conkertree · 04/04/2007 08:55

well i am having sleep problems too but not cause of the baby. dh keeps waking up in the middle of the night worrying about things.

last night it was whether a neighbour who uses an access route through our garden, (and we were in negotiations with him about it as he doesnt legally have the right to), seems to have suddenly moved out and a new family moved in, so he was up trying to find our title deeds at 2.30 am to see when the properties were split. not sure what he was going to do with them if he found them.

tokentotty · 04/04/2007 09:11

Oh dear Conkertree, men are funny things aren't they..... Did he mange to work this all out last night and get back to sleep?
We're both in complete and utter shock. Found out at the scan yesterday that Peanut is.....a boy!! We're gobsmacked, completely and utterly as were sure it was a girl. Still, all healthy and well which is all that matters to us and have updated my profile with HIS (still feels weird!) new pics!

Hersetta · 04/04/2007 09:12

TT, hope your scan went well and congrats to everyone with good results so far.

Ended up having to go to the Docs yesterday as my headache which I've had for 2 days was getting worse. They didn't seem that interested in my headache but were V interested in my red tummy and chest. They think I might have picked up some viral infection and so sent me to the hospital for blood tests. Am now very worried that may have passed something nasty on to the baby so spent most of yesterday in tears. Hoping it's just some common pregnancy rash but have to wait a week for the results.

tokentotty · 04/04/2007 09:18

Wait a week ???? Eeeek you poor thing. Try not to worry too much, I'm sure my midwife was saying something to me about things not getting to the baby that easily as your body naturally filters them out and protects I think. Still, crossing absolutely everything for you for a lovely all clear result. I've had those awful headaches too but have been told by people that they're 'just' hormonal headaches. 'Just' my arse - they're excruciating aren't they? You always thing that if you go to bed and sleep they'll be gone in the morning, but no, not these buggers...

Glad everything went well TT.

We're convinced we're having a boy so now it will probably be a girl !!
