Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Thinking about Itchynscratchy's dilemma. I lived in Eritrea with dh until last August. I think I might have considered giving birth in the best hospital there - though I don't know what my family in the UK would have said! As long as all goes well, it would be less stressful than returning to the UK. But then I am an optimist and I've never given birth before!

Would you consider going to Nairobi? Do they have a Bupa recognised hospital there? If you know anyone there you could stay with, it would make it a lot easier and more secure. I guess your dh or another relative might also be able to go there with you. If you have access to ultrasound in Tanzania then you might be able to find out how high or low risk your pregnancy is to help you make your decision, although I guess the tricky part is having to decide before 32 weeks.

Hope I'm not chatting rubbish!

bananabump · 30/03/2007 21:36

Hi Girls,

first off, sorry to BabyMadwithBmp and GrowingBagPuss...hearing your sad stories has put my friend issue in perspective. Sending you good vibes...

Feeling a lot better tonight (aren't pregnancy moodswings just a barrel of laughs? I cried because I couldn't get a plug into the wall socket last night. My boyfriend thinks I'm going nuts) thanks for all the positive messages, I was quite touched. Some great advice there, I'll be looking into it all.

Kiteflying, I loved your idea of all my friends making a dish and bringing it round, I've never heard of that before! Could be a lot of fun, jut wish I could drink, a glass of wine goes a long way when you're feeling fed up!

Mum2George, I'm sorry, I haven't been shopping into Shrewsbury since getting pregnant, so I'm not sure if there's such a shop there or not, but it sounds good, worth checking out. I actually live in Wrexham, but I do know Shrewsbury fairly well. If you go there, let me know if it's any good!

I also had no idea there was a nearly new sale going on tomorrow- if I can get boyfy up before noon tomorrow we might pop along to see what they've got. Love the thought of aquatots, but will it require me to shoehorn my jiggly bits into a swimming costume? I haven't been that brave for at least three years. I get the feeling my cellulite my actually scare small children (if not the instructor...)

growingbagpuss · 31/03/2007 09:48

bananabump - have a glass of wine!! it won't kill you, or your bean... now a bottle might be a different matter!!

A glass of wine a week or so won't do you any harm (my best friends a m/w and she had the "odd glass" and had a perfectly normal baby) - and if it makes mum more relaxed, and happy, then it sends good vibes to the bean. A stressed out mum who can't enjoy things she likes will send stress vibes!!

mum2george · 31/03/2007 09:55

Bananabump, don't worry about getting your jiggly bits into a costume! if you go to Aquanatal or Aquatots all the other women there will be in the same boat as they will either be pregnant or newish mums!

If your local pool doesn't do these, they may just have a swim session for mums and babes.

Do the NCT run anything in Wrexham? I moved last August and the branch that covers my new town hadn't had anything going on for 4 years as nobody had volunteered so I've started up a regular morning for bumps, babes & toddlers with the sole intention of meeting some local Mums! Had visions of living here forever and never getting to know anyone. We do have things going on locally like Tumbletots, Rhythmtime and playgroups but they are all on the days I work, and on the days I am free there was nothing.

And I will let you know if we do go to Shrewsbury.

itchyncsratchy · 31/03/2007 11:43

Hi everyone,
Am I the only one with heavy achy legs, or cankles as ds1 calls them? Last 2 days I've had a 20 mins walk along the beach and reawoken the nagging lower back/upper right buttock pain. I've staggered to couch and had to rest with feet up which makes back hurt more! I want to know when or if I'll stop feeling like an old woman when feeling very healthy otherwise.
Babybump- I know I feel a rush of sympathy and support for you every time I read your threads. It really sounds as though your awful experiences have forged a strong caring character in you so be proud of yourself. I also had a nightmare mother, I hope people don't put pressure on you to respect and care for her despite her actions. You are obviously the center of your own loving happy family now and well done to you!
Splodj- I'm looking into Mombasa/ Nairobi hospitals. Biggest issue is not knowing anyone in either place and having to travel by land or sea when heavily pregnant and live in a 'foreign' place for a while.

growingbagpuss · 31/03/2007 22:52

Itchy - I fear its the beginning of varicose veins!! Mine are beautiful blue and purple esturies running donw the backs of my thighs (now both thighs), and pretty purple spiders on my calves, which fill up and bulge the moment I get up!

If you can, look in a mirror at the backs of your legs, or feel them if they feel bumpy then VV it may well be...

I will keep my fingers tightly crossed.... I am already condemned to support tights for the rest of my pregnancy!

ps.. we went to the beach today too - lovely wasn't it!

itchyncsratchy · 01/04/2007 10:27

Oh no! Varicose veins! But I do have plenty of spider veins. Lovely

treacletart · 01/04/2007 20:06

Evening all. I've spent almost the entire weekend on the sofa. Sounds nice I know and I have indeed been waited on well by DH - but I'm here because I reckon I've got SPD . Anyone else suffering? Thought I had just early onset groin/ligament stuff but it's been getting worse and worse. Going to try and see an osteopath tomorrow. Can't cope with another 4 months of this...

bananabump · 01/04/2007 23:28

I'm suffering with SPD too, although it seems to come and go depending on my level of activity. The pain is very low down- right in my bits. When it was at its worst I also seemed to have round ligament pain and lower back ache thrown in too, making walking difficult.

I asked the midwife about it, she recommended sleeping with a pillow between the knees to keep the pelvis aligned, and not opening the legs too much getting out of bed/in and out of the car.

Apparently a support belt can help too but I haven't got one yet as it's been a bit easier the past week or so. Some people also say it helps to keep really well hydrated, but I always forget to drink enough so I can't say either way.

Hope you feel better soon!

growingbagpuss · 02/04/2007 08:55

I'm not entirely sure i want ot post this.... I don't know if i want to know what people think i should do, on the basis that I think I know what you'll say... and I don't want to admit it.....

I think I'm leaking amniotic fluid... not all the time, just at the end of a busy day. Its NOt WEE - I had a good sniff last night .

I sooooooo don't want to go near the hosp, plus have crazy 2 yr old, no family nr and a dh whos idea of support when I'm ill is to book xtra day at nursery for ds, and then go into work!!

I've got my 22wk scan on weds, so thought I might ask then if cervix looks ok, and if fluid levels are ok - and then ignore it if possible.

I don't do prem babies.I'm sorry, but but I can't cope with the level of intervention, and if I went into labour v preterm, I would fight for TLC only. I don't know what my cut off would be - prob if bean were breathing alone.

I'm so scared, can't talk to dh as he would just get cross and think I'm being silly

HELP!!!

conkertree · 02/04/2007 09:00

morning everyone. sorry to hear about the spd, vvs etc. I have a bit of pain getting out of bed but thats about it so far (touch wood). survived a lunch with my pil yesterday - fil had obviously had a talk with mil about her attitude to us and to give her her dues, she made a bit more effort than usual.

dh finally felt the baby kick last night which was great. think he can finally believe there is a real little person in there now.

conkertree · 02/04/2007 09:02

sorry message crossed bagpuss - as a first timer, i'm afraid my advice would be to go and get it checked out asap, but then as I say - I'm a first timer so not always sure what should be checked immediately and whats ok.

itchyncsratchy · 02/04/2007 09:12

lots of sympathy to bananabump and treacle, and growingbagpuss PLEASE call your dr or midwife immediately! Like right now, this minute. If there's not a problem you'll be reassured and if there is it's better to deal with it asap IMO. Could it be heavy discharge? I had a spot of thrush last week and still lots of discharge, sorry for TMI!

stretchmarks · 02/04/2007 09:15

Morning everyone,

Bagpuss, agree with conkertree go and get yourself checked out now - call your midwife they will confirm if it is amniotic fluid or not.

growingbagpuss · 02/04/2007 09:15

-but no - not thrush - had too much of that too!! God i hate being pregnant! I have sort of called a m/w - my good friend is one, so i thought I'd ask her advice, and as she's on mat leave she's not duty bound to do anything!!

My problem is mortal fear of being fiddled with (and please, no jokes about how i got pg in 1st place!) by docs, I get really stressed. plus if I go to health profs its like admitting there is a problem...

itchyncsratchy · 02/04/2007 09:21

hi conker, me too! ds felt baby kick yesterday first time, dp spent whole evening trying to keep a hand on bump to get his turn but no luck!
make sure your guys are giving you foot massages too, wonderful, I couldn't believe it!

itchyncsratchy · 02/04/2007 09:24

ah don't worry too much bagpuss, if ever there is a problem it will be better dealt with early than ignored.

growingbagpuss · 02/04/2007 09:27

ok

spoken to m/w friend who says could still be discharge (bless her, she gets all the gross stuff - this is why I'm an L/D nurse - no-one ever asks me gross advice!!) - she says take it easy 2day, and check cervix and fluid levels on weds. She will ring consultant at hosp if it gets any worse, and sweet talk them into seeing me on weds pm.

still stressed, sitting here in tears, but have rung work and asked for occy health referral - don't want to be off sick, but off "shift" so I get less moving and handling stuff to do.

panic not,. I WILL get help if it gets any worse.

treacletart · 02/04/2007 09:33

Glad you're getting advice/being seen to Growingbagpuss. I was just about to post it could be discharge - its incredible how much strange gunk a pregnant body can produce!

itchyncsratchy · 02/04/2007 09:37

very good, you've dealt with it so try not to panic! I saw a beautiful program on national geographic yesterday, watching baby growing in the womb. The most important thing we can do is to try to stay calm, think positive thoughts, smile and breathe deeply when we're faced with stress apparently! I never entirely believe their 'scientific' claims but apparently the less stress baby percieves the better their long term health prospects.

BabyMadwithBump · 02/04/2007 11:30

Doctor thought my water's had broke back when I was 17 weeks, I went due to water infection (which I didn't have in the end) but than she asked about cervix discharge/fluid and I told her that I had been getter very watery discharge for the last 2 weeks and then more question followed and then she sent me to the hospital:

my post:

"Just an update 17 weeks today (baby moving lots mostly at night)!
I was at the hospital all day yesterday, went doctor in the morning then ended up in hospital as doctor thought my waters had broken but after 5 hours of tests and a scan "no they have not" thank god, and me and babe are fine! But ever since my scare yesterday I've been very down and upset, I was okay yesterday but last night it hit home, and now every time I think about it I get upset and cry, they still don't know why I have so much CM and how come it's so watery, one of them thing we may never get to find out the consultant said, I had an internal exam, and when I was getting ready for it, they told me to strip my bottom half, I sat there for a moment while they were getting things ready for this exam and I left a puddle lets say (it's not wee they checked that too) on this sheet, the internal (allot like a smear) they got a sample from inside than put it on this PH stick kinda thing and then checked it to see weather it's baby water, wee, and so on IYSWIM, which in my case nothing to worry about, still don't know what IT is or where IT comes from! Still left me worried but reassured (I think), but now emotional"

You need to get it checked out chick! Babymadxx

tokentotty · 02/04/2007 11:57

Hello all !!!
Back from the most wonderful and relaxing holiday and feeling great. Well, as great as is possible being back at work I guess... How are we all ?? Have tried to read through but a big wave to all the old-timers and a big hello to all the new joiners while I've been away, is lovely to have so many joining in, especially with lovely 20 week scan news. Have got mine tomorrow (21+4 ish I think) and a little bit nervous but very much looking forward to Peanut's next healthcheck. Whilst we were away I felt lots of movement and DH managed to feel it too which made him very happy.

GillL · 02/04/2007 12:37

Glad you had a good holiday TT. I had wondered where you were.

Good luck with your scan tomorrow. Mine's next Tuesday when I'll be 21+2. Will you be finding out the sex or do you want it to be a surprise?

Lovely that your dh felt the movement. When my dh felt the movement he didn't tell me til 2 days later in passing. I was probably asleep at the time. Can't wait for it to be strong enough for dd to feel.

jem1969 · 02/04/2007 12:40

Afternoon all
Glad you had a nice holiday TT.
Just got into work from my 20 week scan-everything OK. The baby was moving around SO much- the doctor said he was very disobedient..! I haven't felt any movements really so far but seems my placenta is at the front which means it's harder to feel anything I think? Was also quite big for its 'age' which had got me a tiny bit worried as DH was a ten and a half pounder ('popped out' though, according to MIL). Feeling a bit more relaxed now and will start the daunting prospect of pram shopping soon!
4 day week this week- yippee!

growingbagpuss · 02/04/2007 12:46

Feeling more sane now - less convinced i'm going to be inhabiting the local hosp.

Glad all u ladies have dh's who want to feel beans movement... mine just looks at me like I'm crazy - bean has been leaping around for WEEKS! only now can I feel it with my hand though
