I had a sling (bjorn active - has extra bit for back support, very worth the extra money)and a buggy board last time. As DD was just 20 months didn't get much use out of the buggy board (she has just started to use it recently at 3 1/2 but that's because she's lazy now!). I mainly used the sling, but dd was also really good at holding hands and not running off!

I'm having concerns this time as with 3 I haven't got enough hands! Also DS is a little (trying to think of a nice word!) devil and won't hold hands but also runs away all the time. Wondering about getting a double buggy but am worried about making expensive mistakes - as I also have a collection of redundant pushchairs!

The buggy I'm liking at the moment is the loola but doesn't get a very good write up on here!

We also spent most of the weekend looking at cars that can fit 3 seats across the back. Ended up with the Ford s-max as favourite. However DH said 'that's the sort of car I'd like to buy for you not for me to drive around in'- like I enjoy driving around in a bus full of rubbish with a nasty smell coming from somewhere (sure there must be an old nappy under the seat somewhere!).

The change bags are a con!
I've got about 5 of those insulated thingys and never used them once! If you BF you don't need. I FF mine and just took bottles of cold boiled water with me and added milk powder when I was out - both took room temp so no need to insulate or warm!

I got given a huge bag of clothes and so shouldn't need to buy anything - good job as only shop I can find near here seems to be mothercare and I just don't like anything in there!

Thanks loler! I am pleased that formula can be made up on the go as well. Had visions of sterilising, then warming etc etc.

Mothercare clothes are not great are they.

Have you thought about using reins with your DS. They seem to be really unpopular over here, but I would prefer a toddler on reins than in a pushchair if you have three to deal with!

lizziemun · 28/03/2007 15:25

kiteflying,

You don't need a changing bag, the company i worked for bought me one but i never used it, it was to fiddley with all it's pockets which just get full of cr*p. I just used a rucksack, which always made sure had all the bits and pieces that i needed so i could just pick up and go.

The thermal bottle holders i was given one from my sil, i found it useful if we were going on a long car journey if dd would need a feed. I have to say i only realy used when she was older. I would not have gone out and bought one otherwise.

I have to say i'm beginning to think i'm odd because i keep reading about people who are have their second or more buying all new prams, etc, and i am just using what we have already we are only buying a buggy board for dd use and not a new pram.

kiteflying · 28/03/2007 15:35

Thanks lizzimun. I also am intrigued at loler having so many "redundant" pushchairs???

myweegirl · 28/03/2007 15:52

thanks - yes feeling better now

i think changing bags are a con. i picked out a nice one for DD - but forgot that on occasion DP would be out with her on his own - so he was not too happy about carrying around a nice pink changing bag - ooops - so now we use a nice black rucksack type thing - which you can get so much more in.

formula on the go - you can also buy ready made formula - which i've got to admit i used a lot both in and out of the house - though it does add to the expense. DD took it at room temperature which was great.

treacletart · 28/03/2007 16:00

Afternoon all - haven't posted for a while - good to hear everyone's doing well.

We went for our 21 week scan today. Very relieved all as should be. DS was a surprise, but I felt I'd like to know in advance this time round, just to get organised with bargains and also to help DS(3.9y) come to terms with being a big brother although, like us he seemed very unconcerned either way. We asked them not to tell us at the hospital, but write it on a little folded card I'd taken with me. We sealed it in an envelpe and then went for a lovely posh lunch where we opened it together with a glass of champagne. We both gasped when we read we're having a ....

girl!

loler · 28/03/2007 16:04

Push chair 1 = a bertini shuttle - we live near a forrest and take dog for walks cross country regularly - really fab for that but heavy and takes loads of boot space. Also after 2 kids getting bit manky and not sure I want to put a newborn in it!

Push chair 2 = a cheapy buggy (think it's a chicco) handles low and gave me a really bad back - you seem to get what you pay for!

Push chair 3 = a Jane buggy - good while ds was small but it's narrow and he isn't! also bits keep braking off it (have a friend who has same issue). Not good for one handed steering (needs to be with toddler and dog!)

Push chair 4 = help!!!!!

Have tried reins but he either takes his feet off the floor and uses it as a swing or lies down and refuses to move! Was thinking of trying one of the type that you put around their wrist but am worried he'll take his hand off!

Loler - have you seen/tried a Micralite? The big back wheels make it great off road, it turns on a sixpence and its a piece of cake one handed. Ours is 3.5 years old now and the eldest model. I'd like a new one for the next one, but I'm sorely tempted to go for the same again - only downside for me is it not having a rear facing option.

katybird · 28/03/2007 16:26

Congratulations treacletart! What a lovely way to find out.

GillL · 28/03/2007 16:47

Agree with Babbit the NCT classes are good for making new mummy friends. I'm still in touch with the girls from my classes from over 2 years ago and we just all celebrated our dc's 2nd birthdays together.

myweegirl - in my area you get 3 one hour NHS ante-natal classes which concentrate mainly on pain relief and what you need to take to the hospital. They are informative and it is best to find out what happens in your local hospital. Although your midwife will be able to give you this information if you can't go. I went to NCT classes which were 2 6 hour sessions which talk in depth about pain relief, breastfeeding, looking after the baby etc. You also get the personal experience of the instructor rather than a medical experience. Personally if it was my first I would go to both. Sorry to hear about your sickness bug. I had that last week and was up all night.

loler - we'll be going for the S MAX when we have number 3. We've got a C MAX at the moment which is great for families. I can actually get 2 big car seats and a booster seat in the back. We'll definitely need to upgrade for number 3 though, mainly for the boot space for when we go away.

I agree with everyone else about the change bag. We use a decent sized rucksack. It has a few pockets which I find useful for the smaller items that might get lost at the bottom of the bag but if you already have a rucksack that you can use then there's no point in buying a change bag. I have to say I've had a lot of use out of my bottle bags. I never made up the bottles until I actually needed them (i.e. took a bottle of water and a pot of formula) but I just found them very handy for carrying bottles around rather than putting them in a carrier bag or risk them leaking in the rucksack/change bag. I still use mine now even though dd is 2. I guess it's personal preference.

stretchmarks · 28/03/2007 17:04

HI Everyone,

Congratulations on a girl Treacletart think that's the first one we know about isn't it.

We did NCT classes first time round - would recommend them I still see some of the mums from mine and enjoyed being in a smaller group than our local NHS one. Although I don't think DH has ever gotten over standing in someones living room with a group of relative strangers pretending to be a womb pushing out a baby - recommend a good sense of humour and don't take it too seriously !!!!

Re baby things - changing bags not needed we had one with our travel system and used that but it's no different to any bag. Never used the insulated pockets in it and you can buy individual insulated things for bottles.

We aren't buying another pushchair this time the travel system was only used for 6 months last time so we will use again and then buy a new Maclaren as that has been fantastic and certainly had our use out of it.

One of my best buys with DS1 was a little tupperware pot that you could measure out your formula into about 3 sections I think then you can make up bottles wherever you are. Will have to try and find it again though hoping to have longer off work this time so will hopefully be Bfing longer.

Lo's kicks are getting stronger though DH hasn't felt him yet. Have got the week off next week and at last I am off to the hairdressers to get my hair cut and coloured. Also booked in to get waxed and plucked so should feel like new by next wed.

Hersetta · 28/03/2007 17:11

What a coincidence. We've just bought a new C-Max. DH is still a bit upset though at having to trade in his beloved beetle. The last symbol of him being a man of no real responsibility has gone.

Treacle, what a lovely way to find out many congratulations. I'd love to do something similar but my scan is at 8am and then we both have to go straight into work so no time for anything quite so wonderful. Might still get them to right it down so we can find out by ourselves.

bananabump · 28/03/2007 20:50

Hi guys, I know some of you are talking about feeling baby's movements, and I just was wondering when you started feeling them? I thought I started feeling them a month ago at exactly 17 weeks, very very light, I could only feel them if I concentrated, but they definitely didn't feel like wind to me.

They seemed to gte less regular but I wasn't worried cbecause it's still fairly early days, I'm quite overweight, and I figured maybe I'd just been lucky with his position the first few times, and now it was nestled somewhere because all my squidge and I wasn't feeling anything.

Anyway when I saw my consultant yesterday he asked if I'd felt any movement and then proceeded to tell me I hadn't (wonder how many babies he's had in his belly, eh?)

Tonight it feels like my bladder is being assaulted by a barrage of tiny pokes and kicks. Am I going crazy or is this it?

lizziemun · 29/03/2007 07:50

I would say yes. Books say from 18 to 22 weeks maybe ealier in second or more pregnancy.

I felt what feel like fluttering, or butterfly's if you know what i mean.

saturn · 29/03/2007 07:52

Thanks for all your advice re NCT classes. Will call to check availability today.

Uki · 29/03/2007 10:19

Hello Again

growingbag- Hi and welcome, LOL at your name and don't do girlie thing, you sound like a real personality, will be fun to have you aboard.

I had scan yesterday and Thankfully all was well , Before it started sonographer said "you know we will find out 60% or abnormalities today" and then aske what scans I'd already had, If I wasn't scared enough already, what a start.

All was well though, baby opening and closing mouth and bumping around.

Feels very real now, looking forward to relaxing now.

Baby kicks alot at night now, but not much in the day, and definately not enough for dh to move away in bed yet.

LOL at babymad, what a strong baby you must have.

growingbagpuss · 29/03/2007 10:41

My bean kicks lots too - DH just looks at me as if to say..."and...?"

Neither of us heavily into pregnancy thing - hence wanting to know what type of bean it is - keeps us interested!!

Look 4ward 2 hearing more on babes...

lizziemun · 29/03/2007 11:16

Hersetta,

Mine on the 21st and i will be 20th and i will be 21 +1 day.

Ilovebabies · 29/03/2007 11:59

Hi
We had our 19 wk scan last week and it looks like we are having a girl!! Which will be a nice change as we have 2ds. Ds1 was very excited at finding out he will be getting a little sister he wanted ds2 to be a girl!!Asked him what he would think if it was another brother and he said we would just give it to someone else and have another one!!
Is anybody else worried that they may have got the sex wrong? Lady zoomed in on her bits and said that smooth outline looks like a girl and then kept refering to it as her, saying there is her heart, her feet etc. So she must have been quite certain but i'm just worried its a boy and it's bits were hidden and now i'm all excited thinking i'm having a girl.
Really i know i need to get a grip because everything looked fine on the scan so either way it looks like a healthy baby and thats the main thing.

pinkranger · 29/03/2007 12:04

lots of late scans it seems, mine is on the 20th and i will be 22+2 which just seems ages ages away - conratulations on everyone else scan.

Glad yours was gook uki - now you can try and relax xx

growingbagpuss · 29/03/2007 12:14

Ilovebabies - it's hard with scans - I think the prescence of something is more definite than the absence - so i would be nervous that bits were hidden - equally it could be the cord not a willy !! .

I think you have the right idea - she (!!) is healthy and thats the most important thing.

I was just glad with ds that it was a baby and not a goat he used to kick so much. We even named him Billy as a result!

Tho' i want a boy I'm kind of resigned to luck of the draw... and knowing my luck it will be a real girlie girl like my sister (AAARRRGH!!!!)
