Hahahahhahaah that's how I think about it when toying with names. How do they sound when you're introducing yourself to the CEO of XYZ company, how they sound when screamed at the top of your voice in temper and when a group of little kids are altogether playing and calling each other's names.

Washersaurus · 21/03/2007 16:37

TT - I don't think ANY name sounds great when you have to scream it! I absolutely hate shouting DS' name (Dylan) in public for fear of being judged - tee hee!

Must add that we have a very posh sounding surname so other than that it is ok

jem1969 · 21/03/2007 16:39

We have no names yet- DH thinks we have as we vaguely talked about his (dead) father's name for a boy and he now thinks it a given. I do quite like it but I think we need slightly more discussion on the matter! And it might not look right when it comes out so we ought to have a back up. Same with girls names- one was vaguley mentioned and now he's decided that's the one. I think I will have to take a book when we go on holiday and throw out a few suggestions- we will be in Italy so he'll probably start thinking Giovanni is a good idea or something...

Washersaurus · 21/03/2007 16:42

So come on Jem, what are the names?

jem1969 · 21/03/2007 16:44

not telling yet! Maybe after my 20 week scan...Quite boring and traditional though (for boys at any rate)

Washersaurus · 21/03/2007 16:45

I only ask because I'm looking to steal them

tokentotty · 21/03/2007 16:46

Oh Jem....see previous conversations on our thread about letting men make suggestions on children's names !! That or just wait for pinkranger to pop by and enlighten us on her DH's latest ideas

Washersaurus · 21/03/2007 16:48

Oh yes pinkranger has had some fab suggestions put to her so far

Hersetta · 21/03/2007 16:49

Have a great time in Spain TT - two weeks tomorrow for me. Can't wait. My Mum says the weather is still nice so you should have a good time.

I went baby shopping with my Mum in Spain and we've discovered that the Spanish don't really do babbies clothes for when you don't know the flavour. Hardly any white and none at all in yellow or green. In the end I got pale blue as we decided a girl can wear blue but a little boy can't wear pink.

I got some lovely babygrows (short sleeves and legless type) that I haven't seen in the UK. Here there are poppers over the shoulders so you have to put them over baby's head which scares me a bit as a first time mum. The Spanish ones have poppers under the crotch and then all the way up the left hand side, so all you've go to do is put arms through arm holes and then do poppers up. Sounds easy and they were 4 for 8 euros in Carrefour. I've told my Mum she's got to stock up on some more for me when I know what flavour I'm having.

Has anyone been buying anything yet. i am paranoid this baby will be really early (like I was - 2lb 14oz) so I want to be all ready and prepared by the end of May. Mothercare freeks me out a bit still so am happily buying stuff online at the moment (mostly generic stuff like muslins squares, changing mats, baby fleece blanket, ooh and a glider nursing chair for night time feeds). Been researching pram options but am still pretty confused by it all, but I do know which car seat I want which I will buy after 20 week scan. By the way how many muslin squares will I need....I have no idea??

Anyone else got any bits yet?

kiteflying · 21/03/2007 16:49

Jem, I fought hard for Olivier and Jean-Paul to go on our list, but lost. I would not have got anywhere with my favourite Italian name (Gianfranco)

kiteflying · 21/03/2007 16:53

Hersetta, welcome back. Isn't that odd that you cannot get neutral clothes - I thought the Spanish would have been prudish about finding out the sex ahead of time. Maybe they count on family offerings after the birth?

Were you really that tiny when you were born?

Hersetta · 21/03/2007 16:58

Kite,

yes I was. My Mum had a hard time carrying to term - she had 7 mc's before I came along and then had to have a hysterectomy shortly after I was born so as her only child I am her only chance on granchildren, hence her going a bit potty about me being pg.

I was surprised by the kids clothes as well, but we went to 3 shops and browed the local market (which has loads of childrens clothes stalls) and never saw 1 thing in yellow.

Lusciousladylush · 21/03/2007 16:59

Hi,

Just noticed your thread and read some bits. I love the idea of the spanish baby clothers poppers up the left hand side - what a great idea! You should get loads and sell them on ebay or something! I'd buy some for sure.

Oh and talking of boys names.... any good ones to go with the surname Honeybun? (need to be strong ones!)

jem1969 · 21/03/2007 17:03

I haven't bought a thing yet- if I see something in NY that I HAVE to get I may but again, until my 20 week scan I can't quite bring myself to do it! But I do have to buy some pressies for other babies that are due quite soon so I could buy something for them and then just happen to keep it! The whole pram/car seat etc thing freaks me out- our car has a tiny boot and we should really buy a new one but going to try and put that off for a while. I hate driving in London anyway and can walk to all the shops nearby and get on the bus to friends so car will only be to visit parents etc. Am going to book the John Lewis thing where they take you through everything and hopefully will all become a bit clearer.

Washersaurus · 21/03/2007 17:03

I have about 20 muslins - they were my most precious accessory when DS was bf for mopping up the various fluids etc. It seems a bit excessive when I look in DS' cupboard now but I really did use all of them!

I never got on with over the head baby grows - my favourites when DS was really tiny were little sleeping gowns (sewn at the bottom) which buttoned up down the front, so all I had to do was lie him on it and pop his arms in (they were also good because wearing real nappies his bottom was quite bulky)

I did find some unisex baby clothes as a gift for a friend when I looked in C&A in Barcelona last year

Hersetta · 21/03/2007 17:09

Well, I'm off to Spain again in 2 weeks so i can always stock up for fellow August Mumsnetters - just let me know size and pink or blue (although they are actually white with either pink or blue stipes, piping or pictures of animals).

I think they are usually 10 euros (when i was there childrens clothes were all 20% off in Carrefour.

kiteflying · 21/03/2007 17:15

Your poor Mum - what an awful time she must have had. She must be thrilled by your pregnancy as you say.

I like the sound of those babygros. I have promised myself to make a proper list closer to my ML leave date but like you am a bit worried about being unstuck by an early arrival, especially with no family in the country. Cloth nappies are a bit beyond me at this stage but my local baby store does mini-lecture sessions so I will go along to that and apparently you can just use muslins on a newborn anyway (buy lots, apparently you use them for everything, including covering the yucky fire retardant fabric of the car seat on the way home from hospital)

I have only bought the occasional treat - after happy news scans usually but have bought myself a glider as it was on my ebay list of "big" purchases that must be cost conscious about. We use it as an armchair at the moment.

Hersetta · 21/03/2007 17:22

I guess I'm also being organised as I have to get the nursery semi ready in April as my step Dad is coming over from Spain for 4 days to help put stuff tigether for us (as we're both complet duffers when it comes to DIY and flatpack furniture). So, he's laying flooring, putting up blinds, and putting together a cot and dresser so I have to get it all by then, as he's not back again until July and that may be too late !!

I got confirmation yesterday that we're enrolled on an NCT course starting at the end on June and lasting until the end of July. Just have to make sure the baby knows that if they come early, I won't ahve a clue about how to change them, bathen them etc so it would be better for all concerned if they just hung around in my tummy for the duration.

Hersetta · 21/03/2007 17:23

Off home now, see you all tomorrow.

loler · 21/03/2007 18:42

Just been to the midwife and can't believe that I don't have to see her again for another 12 weeks. Is this the same foe every low risk pg? Even if they do no more than take your blood pressure it's reassuring to see some one!

We've just put an offer in for a house and had it accepted, they want us to move in 28 days (so really do need blood pressure checking regularly!) - don't think this is likely to happen but at least I shouldn't be too huge to help. Getting excited about spending ML painting!

Not even started looking at baby stuff yet - the only thing we really need it a new pushchair as last one has had it. Planning on getting this later so don't have to store it for too long. Do need some new muslins as the other are still in use as comfort blankets (another vital use!)

wow yesterday was obviously the time to be at a computer.

with names, i feel a bit more willing to share our ideas now as I have discussed them with purplerabbit. We are pretty set on Struan (Scottish name just in case its not well known - I'm not sure if its used at all in England) for a boy and Rachel for a girl, although we both really love Alice as well.

We are off to the south of France in May, so think we will probably not be able to resist a few small purchases while there.

jem - my DH is the same, as soon as something is vaguley mentioned, he thinks thats a hard and fast decision made and its veyr difficult to re-open discussions. Luckily we have agreed on almost every name on the shortlist though.

i see hersetta is on an NJCT course - all the ones i tried to get on here were fully booked. Was going to try hpynobirthing classes, but after the low lying placenta at the 20 week scan, although I know the chances are that it will move, it might not and it seems silly to spend £300 on a course when i might have to have a c-section.

its really quite exciting thinking that soon it wont be too soon (if you know what i mean) to start making some purchases and getting things ready. Dont know about the rest of you but i hadnt realised before this pg just how long 9 months actually is.

hope some of you find your way to a computer today too.

conkertree · 22/03/2007 09:15

loler - i was surprised too - went for midwife appointment at about 16 weeks, and she said thats fine i'll see you in 9 weeks. I did think that was a bit odd but it does say that will be the time scale in the notes i got from the midwife at the start. I think the appointments get closer together after that though. (Hope they do)

I saw the midwife at 16 weeks then haave to go back 6 weeks later - so 22 weeks. 12 does sound a long time without seeing anyone though.

Forgot to say yesterday, I went into boots to pick up some Mumomega (thanks TT for the reccomendation) and all vitamins are on 3 for 2, so got 3 months worth which resulted in a saving of £11.99 as they are fairly expensive.

jem1969 · 22/03/2007 10:43

Round here it's midwives at 10/11 weeks and then not till 21 weeks.
Couldn't find the Mumomega in my little Boots.
