Fantastic news Catherine - enjoy your sleep!

Stinkbaby · 03/02/2017 12:00

Awesome news Catherine!! Glad all was ok Grin

Pisghetti · 03/02/2017 12:14

Great news Catherine!

My midwife is on her way to do my booking in (bit late as I'm 11+3 but had to cancel my original appointment at the antenatal clinic because DD came down with chickenpox). Will she need a wee sample?

ZigAZigAhh · 03/02/2017 12:23

Pisghetti - yes she will! Wink

Stinkbaby · 03/02/2017 12:30

Finally have my scan date!! A week today... soooooo long away. I will be 13.5 excited but annoyed it's so far lol

Timefor2 · 03/02/2017 16:52

Thanks first timer - results came today and much lower on my adjusted scores than the 'background ones' for my age so really pleased with that. Finally (at 14+2!) ready to start telling people this weekend.

OkyDoke · 03/02/2017 21:09

I may sound like an idiot here, ive read all nhs literature etc but does everyone have the downs, edwards and pataus tests at 12 week scan. Have you?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/02/2017 21:17

OkyDoke no, you can decline the screening (I do).

Kirstyinnorway · 03/02/2017 21:45

Oky it's illegal to test for Down's/Edwards/Pataus here but I probably also wouldn't test in the UK either, it's just personal choice so if you don't want to, please don't feel pressured because most people do!

My mum was 40 when she had me and therefore there was a high-risk I'd have Down's, she chose not to test as she wouldn't have terminated the pregnancy anyway (although if I were in her position - I'm not, I'm 27 - I probably would test just to know what to expect, IYSWIM).

OkyDoke · 03/02/2017 21:57

I think ill do the screening, i wouldnt expect to be high risk (im 27 too) and like you said it wouldnt hurt to know what to expect. Im not sure about anything further if i am high risk though. Where are you that makes it illegal if you dont mind me asking?

TMI26 · 03/02/2017 22:00

Does anyone else feel as though August is a million years away? Been signed off sick for two weeks and don't think I can stomach going back, I'm confused about where the sickness stops and the pregnancy symptoms begin :/ I don't remember the last time I had 'energy' I am sure none of my sisters were like this during pregnancy, I feel like an absolute slob who just wants to eat sleep and netflixs ....

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/02/2017 22:10

Does anyone else feel as though August is a million years away? Yes & no. Yes, if I look my calendar between now & August it feels like a lifetime so I decided to break it up in to chunks as that worked last time. My chunks this time are:
dc3 bithday, this month, & Feb half term
dc1 birthday, March,
dad & fils dirthdays, April, & Easter hols
dc2 birthday, May, & half term
dc4 birthday June,
July-sports days, dc3 reception school inductions & nursery leavers performance & the end of the school year.
Basically I've got stuff to focus on that's not baby related each month. Plus no doubt lots of appointments & bits for baby too Grin.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/02/2017 22:13

b i r thdays. A wriggling 19 month old does not improve my already shoddy spelling/typing skills.

Kirstyinnorway · 03/02/2017 22:16

I'm in Norway Oky, the law was passed not long ago (2 years I think?), lots of controversy but in general I think the consensus is that people are mostly happy about it. I don't really like that the choice has been take away as I firmly believe it's the most personal of choices and you should do whatever feels right to you! But I'm not Norwegian (I'm Scottish) so I try not to criticise what goes on over here as I hate the moaning that is prevelent amongst the expat community! If I were that way inclined, I could go back to Scotland for the test Smile

TMI I am also the biggest slob just now, I keep apologising to DH as we are normally an active couple and he must be so bored with me at the moment! I just don't want to DO anything. I'm hoping I get some energy back in the next few weeks! Shall keep my fingers crossed for you too. Have you tried online yoga? I love Yoga With Adrienne, it does help me feel more energised for the day (and even if I get nothing else done, at least I can say I yoga-d)!

calimommy · 04/02/2017 04:48

oky in Ireland they don't offer testing other than anatomy scans etc. You can get private blood work done but because abortion is illegal if you got bad news (FFA e.g.) and you decided to terminate then you have to go to the U.K. Irish solution to and Irish problem. 🙄
I've just moved to the states and it's a free for all here. As my new Ob said to me "this is America, you can do whatever you want here".... but there's no obligation to get tested either, in any country. You can always decline any medical testing or intervention.

SociallyAcceptableCookie · 04/02/2017 11:36

Hi everyone. I haven't posted here in so long that it's disappeared from my "threads I'm on" list!

I've opted out of nt tests. We wouldn't decide to terminate based on the results, and I have seen so many friends worried to death over high-risk results that turned out to be nothing. It means they cancelled my 12-week scan after scanning me at 9+6 in EPU, because you can date the baby at that age so no need for a 12-week. It was disappointing but I'm mostly over it. We'll have a private gender scan and dh will see that.

If anyone wants to join us on Facebook, just pm me with your email address and I'll send you an invite. It's a secret group so none of your friends can see you've joined.

Timefor2 · 04/02/2017 18:52

The testing is useful I think even if you plan to continue the pregnancy regardless to give you time to prepare before the birth if anything is discovered. Totally agree with socially about high results causing too many people to worry unnecessarily. I can see why people would opt out for that reason.

Lapin387 · 04/02/2017 19:13

Regarding nuchal measurements and trisomy screening:
I wouldn't consider termination, and also wouldn't be willing to have amniocentesis or cvs due to miscarriage risk, so for me, screening would give a figure of risk that I would not act on but might worry about. If it were actually a test that would tell me for sure that there is a problem then I would go for it in order to be prepared. For me, screening programs work best when they are about detecting a problem earlier than it would otherwise show itself, and when detecting early and so treating earlier leads to improved outcomes. I will certainly have the 20 week anomaly scan, which might detect physical abnormalities associated with trisomies. So I am happy to find out problems, but not just potential risk of problems, if that makes sense? But this is a very personal decision and I completely understand why others would choose screening and am grateful we are given the choice.

SickRose · 04/02/2017 19:58

I'm having the standard ones as I prefer to be prepared for all outcomes. However, my DH has Charcot Marie Tooth Syndrome which is on a dominant gene so there's a 50% chance of our baby having it. We can test while I'm pregnant but the test is invasive and could result in miscarriage so we're not doing that. We discussed it and decided that we wouldn't have a termination if our baby had CMT so didn't see the point. To be honest we hadn't planned on getting pregnant naturally, we were going to have IVF to be able to choose the embryo without it. A lot of couples in our situation seem to wait until the child starts to show any symptoms before they have them tested for the CMT gene. But again, I like being prepared for all outcomes so we'll probably use the cord to test.

SociallyAcceptableCookie · 04/02/2017 21:00

Lapin I agree. The anomaly scan will give more information. I would of course want to prepare for a baby who was going to need medical attention as soon as they're born. I also work with sick children who in some cases have very rare genetic conditions and I believe there is just no way to know everything before birth.

SociallyAcceptableCookie · 04/02/2017 21:04

And this is of course a very personal decision and I don't judge anyone for having the screening. I'm just listing some of my reasons for opting out.

Catherinebee85 · 05/02/2017 00:56

We've opted to have the screening however had a really open discussion this afternoon about what we'd do about downs. Both agreed if baby has a high risk of downs it wouldn't affect our plans, we would just appreciate being prepared and having time to prepare family and friends. If, however we were told baby would be massively physically disabled and quality of life would be really compromised we would think twice about whether it was fair to bring that child into the world. It's a really contentious issue though and I can completely see both sides.

MustBeThursday · 05/02/2017 15:02

Wow, trying to get back up to speed with the thread! Been feeling terrible since last week, on top of feeling rough anyway had an awful cold/chesty/sinusy virus following almost straight on from DH's sickness bug - thankful I only work Thursdays and Fridays, I certainly couldn't have dragged myself in earlier in the week, I couldn't even put my glasses on because my sinuses were so painful. Still full of cold now! Seems lots of you are still feeling rubbish too.

A bump has really popped up this week - much earlier than I first showed with DC1. I've got my scan (finally) tomorrow afternoon, did everyone feel really nervous before? I can't remember feeling as jittery last time. It says to go with a full bladder - is that like drink 2 pints of water before I go, or just don't go to the loo before I go? Didn't have to have a full bladder with DC1 but was at a different hospital.

ZigAZigAhh · 05/02/2017 15:12

MustBe - I have mine tomorrow morning and am also feeling v jittery! I don't remember being this nervous with DC1 although DH assures me I was Smile

I also have to have a full bladder and my hospital recommends drinking 4-5 glasses of water one hour before the scan, if that helps.

Good luck tomorrow! Grin

Heatherbaby · 05/02/2017 15:52

Hello everyone,

I've also had a bit of a mammoth catch up. Congrats to all those who've had their scans. It's an amazing and surreal feeling to see the baby on the screen!

zig and mustbeThursday re the full bladder, the recommendation is that you drink about a litre of water an hour before the appointment and not pee beforehand. However as I was sick shortly before mine I wasn't able to go in with a full bladder.

The sonographer immediately commented that my bladder wasn't full but he said as the ultrasound waves bounce off water this just means the picture would be clearer with a full bladder (mine was a bit fuzzy but he could see the vitals), also the full bladder pushes the uterus/womb up which helps them.

I wouldn't worry too much if you can't hold as much water in as recommended, just try your best lol. Good luck x
