Saffi - I went for a crib rather than Moses basket - you get a lot more use out of one. Some babies outgrow Moses basket very quickly!

PinkUnicorn1990 · 04/01/2017 14:35

Saffi we are expecting our first in April and have been told by quite a few people that babies grow out of Moses baskets quickly. We have a next2me crib for upstairs and a second hand Moses basket ( from family) for downstairs

Anyone had a next 2 me? Can you use them with an angel care monitor with the mat? Seen conflicting views but the lady at the baby show who sold us the crib said you could... Hmm

marmitecheesetoast · 04/01/2017 16:57

We've got a second hand next2me crib for upstairs - haven't looked into monitors at all though yet pinkunicorn.. what type does anyone else have / planning on getting?

For downstairs I've been wondering about getting a chicco lullago which would also then double up as a travel crib as well as downstairs sleeping option that would last longer than a Moses basket - not sure if this is a good option or not? Our living room isn't massive but I do think it's probably a good option and wouldn't cos too much of a problem space wise...?
We also have the uppababy vista pram, the carrycot of which is approved for everyday sleeping so that could be used initially I guess too in place of a Moses basket? Not sure what's best though, interested to hear what others are doing!

First day back at work over thank goodness, was rather painful trying to stay awake this afternoon! Baby helped with lots of kicking though Wink anyone else noticed they seem to get more kicks while sat at a desk?! Maybe it's just that I'm noticing it more at work!

MrsBac83 · 04/01/2017 17:12

Thanks for advice ladies. SIL gets married 3 weeks before D day too so have to fit it in around that Hmm Almost dreading that - looking like beached whale and having to stay awake all day!! Thankfully it's close to home at least. Hospital bag will be in the car!!

Yeah I've noticed plenty of movement over last couple of days. I think he/she was doing the fandango all day yesterday but must have worn themselves out as I've not felt so much today.

jpeg28 · 04/01/2017 17:32

I'm borrowing a chicco next2me for our bedroom and I only have a flat so I'm thinking I won't get anything for lounge. I'm getting a second hand sleepyhead and my carrycot for the pram can also be used for day time sleeping so hoping I'll be ok? The next2me says you can use it for up to 9 months??
In terms of monitors, I'm going to get the angelcare ac401 as has been recommended by a few on another thread. I hadn't even thought about using movement sensors on the next2me, thought I would just use them once baby goes in the cot

Helbelle75 · 04/01/2017 17:34

Is anyone going for a snuzpod? We're hoping to have one of those for upstairs, not sure about downstairs yet.

SharkBastard · 04/01/2017 18:02

Ooo forgot this thread was here!

I breastfed DD for 14 months so plan on breastfeeding this one too. The only thing I got was a feeding pillow (God send) and a pump. I had to use a manual pump as my let down was super fast and hard :/ I just felt more in control using a manual pump. I didn't give DD expressed milk till she was 3 months, and had to throw milk away as I had so bloody much of it! Nightmare cause I just sprayed all the time.

We're getting the snuzpod in grey, I coslept with DD but was a lone parent so just shared a bed with her but this time DH and I will obviously be together so the best and safest option is the snuzpod.

I'll be doing the whole 4th trimester thing as I did it with DD and it worked best for us, although it's very tiring!

Went to midwife today...measuring as 25+3 despite being 24+3 so they've moved my date again. Got to hear heartbeat though so that was nice

purpleviolet1 · 04/01/2017 18:13

I've ordered a Moses basket as I'll be staying with my parents initially and they have a double storey house so will be practical to have beside me when in Bed and then downstairs too. At home I'll therefore have the Moses basket and once outgrown that , will put into cot. In a flat so won't be too bad at home. There are so many options it's mind boggling!!!

purpleviolet1 · 04/01/2017 18:13

Also shark , what's the 4th trimester thing you mention??

marmitecheesetoast · 04/01/2017 18:17

Yeah if I was in a flat jpeg I wouldn't worry about a second option, sounds like your sorted with the next2me and carrycot if you need it too.

We pick up next2me from SiL tonight! What are you doing about a mattress for it jpeg? As think guidance now is you should have a new mattress? Need to look into where to get one

What's the 4th trimester shark?

m.huffpost.com/uk/entry/9607642

It's basically helping the baby adjust to the world for 3 months which is the hardest time for mum and baby. Things like baby wearing, swinging, swaddling, cosleeping etc.

I found it worked well for DD and I

peanut2017 · 04/01/2017 20:45

Hey y'all

Delighted for you Luchi that's great news & thanks for the info on breastfeeding. I was thinking the same - do I get bottles anyway even if I am hoping to breast feed so think I will.

Mrsbac think having a party for hubbies 40th is a bit much for you so close to your due date. Do something a few weeks ago maybe - nice meal & book something for you both down the line like a night away?

Helbelle75 we got the snuzpod and am going to get the sleepyhead to go in it then. Not bothering with a Moses basket - got the uppa baby vista and you can use the bassinet for this purpose.

Bought a baby bath, thermometer, muslin cloths and 2 changing mats - one upstairs & one downstairs - damn you amazon!

Are any of you buying furniture like wardrobe etc?

Went for physio this morning and I do have spd and a lot of the tightness! She was very good! Few more exercises to do! Working from home the last 2 days which has saved me not having to drive & having time to do the exercises & sit on my ball!

everdene · 04/01/2017 21:20

Someone from work has given me a Chicco Next To Me which I put up tonight - quite exciting to see what it would be like! We have a high mattress though so I think it is a fair bit lower than the recommended two cm below the bed.

I think it will be worth making a stand for it to go on so it is level. My dad is quite good at DIY so I'll ask him to make me a little platform!

The baby is kicking like mad now, it feels really real!

JennyOfOldstones · 05/01/2017 02:17

We are going for next to me with sleepyhead in for upstairs. With DD we used to put the sleepyhead on the sofa for naps then just carry her upstairs on it when we went to bed. Might need something a bit safer this time with big sister running around downstairs...

Had a bednest last time and DD was kicking the end by 5 months, the next to me is bigger though so hoping to go a bit longer.

marmitecheesetoast · 05/01/2017 08:20

jpeg have just noticed think your Amazon sceeeshot is showing your name and location at bottom of image, you might want to remove?

Glad Physio went well peanut! Hope exercises help!

Our bed is quite high too ever so think DH is going to build
A sort of plinth/platform for it to sit on

amelie427 · 05/01/2017 08:37

Hello everyone! I've been quiet on here so far - expecting our first on 16th April Smile

Reading with a lot of interest here - It's quite overwhelming reading about all the "stuff" we need to get - haven't bought anything yet...! I think I've wrapped my head around everything we'll need, but can any second time mums give any advice on stuff that they bought and didn't need/use? I know everyone's different but it would be handy. I'm sure we'll do a big bulk buy in John Lewis or M&P, and I'm sure they will try to up-sell on all sorts.

Would love to hear how Scandi & little one are getting on.

Saffi5 · 05/01/2017 09:50

Thanks mygreensofa and pinkunicorn re. the moses basket.

Just like you marmitecheesetoast we were thinking of using the pram carrycot for short periods around the house (we're getting a Bugaboo cameleon3 classic+ and I know they say it's only suitable for 2 hours max).

We looked at the next2me in JL, but I am a bit concerned about suddenly moving in the night and my arm hitting the baby or something Shock probably worrying too much but as I haven't done this before....

Welcome amelie427, you're like me - I had stayed quiet here too until Sunday. I'm also quite overwhelmed with the amount for information and all that we need to buy. Our first is due 22nd April and we haven't bought anything really yet!

marmitecheesetoast · 05/01/2017 13:03

Also, my Maggie Howell hypnobirthing book and CD arrived yesterday, exciting! Tried listening to the CD last night but fell asleep about 15 mins in Blush I'm sure all the positive stuff will still have gone in subconsciously though right?! Has anyone else started with anything like this yet?

Welcome amelie! I'm a first-timer so can't offer any insight on things you can do without/what the essentials are but I'm sure others on here will be able to

PinkUnicorn1990 · 05/01/2017 13:18

Marmite I've just got the Maggie Howell cd too! Not tried it yet though

LuchiMangsho · 05/01/2017 14:48

Didn't need: baby bath. Use a bath insert in a normal bath. Top and tail bowl. Cotton wool- just use baby wipes. Cute outfits- too much faff. Baby towels with hoods- just use a normal towel. Cuddly toys- total and utter waste of space. Nappy pail or anything like that- just chuck it in the bin. The whole house will smell of poo and vomit anyway. As will you. 😂😂

Essential: Muslins and wipes. Blankets. Lots of vests and sleep suits. Car seat. Buggy. Some basic baby toiletries. Nappies- lots and lots of nappies. Lansinoh if breastfeeding. Nappy cream/metanium. A changing mat of some sort.

Somewhere to sleep. Can be a cot/crib or Moses basket. Be prepared that for the first month they may only ever want to sleep on another human being.

Would be nice to have: A sling. Sleepyhead. Nice changing bag.
For a changing bag: if you don't want to splash out, just use a backpack. Or a normal bag with compartments.

Feeding: breast pads and Lansinoh for BF. Bottles and sterilisers otherwise.

LuchiMangsho · 05/01/2017 14:51

And vomit stains are really visible on dark coloured things. If your kid possets a lot then you might want to invest in some bibs.

If you were contemplating a tumble dryer, get one. You will use it many times a day.

LuchiMangsho · 05/01/2017 14:56

I forgot the baby monitor. Although honestly you won't need it in the first month.
I also bought a breastfeeding cover- Bebe Au Lait or something.
Some people swear by those baby sleeping bag thingies. My child hated it.
A baby bouncer may or may not be essential. Mine hated his but loved the one at a friend's house. Go figure.
Overall, buy the basics and then build up slowly. Baby crap will take over your house/life anyway.

petiteange28 · 05/01/2017 15:20

Thanks for the tips Luchi. That's far less terrifying than the Mothercare list my colleague directed me to , which is about 7 pages long.

Baby crap is already taking over our flat. We have boxes full of stuff and hand me downs (from friends) in our hall whilst we try and clear out the spare room. It's terrifying! I already sacrificed 3 bag full of clothes last weekend to Cancer Research but I fear a lot more is going to have to go if we are ever going to fit everything in.

JennyOfOldstones · 05/01/2017 16:09

Every word of Luchi's post is true.

Some kind of stretchy wrap is essential in my opinion. My DD loved the bouncer but saw the playmat as some kind of torture device.
