Urgh sounds awful Puggle. Hope it eases off soon.

MrsBac83 · 07/11/2016 13:35

Its weird isn't it how in different locations the care seems to differ. I have all my checks with a midwife at the hospital except 25 and 31 weeks which are with GP (don't know why!) I know a friend just up the road has had all hers with midwife. You'd think it was the same all over. Anyone else have the same as me? (I'm in Essex btw)

Also, I've been told that my hospital don't offer free antenatal classes anymore and I have to pay - I'm yet to find out how much! But again, friend just up the road has free ones. Anyone else have to pay for NHS classes?

finova · 07/11/2016 15:31

The midwife listened for a heartbeat at my 16 week appt, but it took her a good 5 minutes to find it.

jpeg28 · 07/11/2016 17:53

Puggle that sounds so stressful... hope you have had a restful day today!

I'm really panicking today... 16+6... should I be feeling the baby move??

Helbelle75 · 07/11/2016 17:56

I'm 17+6 today and I started feeling fluttering at the weekend. Still can't guarantee it's baby though!

Celticlassie · 07/11/2016 18:26

I read that for first pregnancies it'll be 18-20 weeks before you feel the baby move.
I've got my midwife on Friday (16+6) so really hoping she hears a heartbeat and sets my mind at rest for another couple of weeks.

RaRa25 · 07/11/2016 18:28

Gosh puggle take it easy!
To those not feeling movement I really wouldn't worry this early on.

I had my consultant appointment today. They want to do a c section at 38 weeks (I had DD at 35 weeks with placenta abruption, but was also in labour so they don't know which happened first) and i will have extra scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks.
She also did a internal swab to check for strep b ( I had that last time) and any other bacterial infections, I really was not prepared for that after a long day at work!
A lot to take in but at least they are keeping a close eye just in case.

Got my MW appointment this week, hope I get to hear the heart beat for a bit of peace of mind.
Sorry long post! Hope everyone else is keeping well.

Puggleface · 07/11/2016 18:44

Sounds like they are going to keep a good eye on you RaRa! That's a load of information to take in all at once though so no wonder you're feeling a bit overwhelmed!

Yeh I didn't feel movement with DS till about 18 weeks but once you know that's what it is, you'll realise that actually you've probably been feeling 'something' for weeks. And also there is the whole anterior placenta that can sometimes get in the way! I'm feeling movements but the are very sparadic and unreliable! I'll feel better in a few more weeks when they are stronger!
Sounds like maternity care is so different all across the country! I guess different NHS Trusts set their own guidelines, but I'd be really bummed out not to hear a heartbeat at the 16 week appointment!
I'm feeling a bit better now lots of sitting down at my desk and much less walking around! I think the rest of my Xmas shopping will be done online!

MyGreenSofa · 07/11/2016 19:49

Although I understand the logic about not trying to listen to heartbeat at 16 weeks I think it's very unfair to expect women to go between 12 and 20 weeks with no reassurance, and that they should try and find it.

RaRa - can I ask when and how they found out you had strep b last time? It wasn't really on my radar last time but I've heard some horror stories since then so now it's something I worry will be missed.

ChatEnOeuf · 07/11/2016 19:51

Movements first time around are often later than with subsequent babies. With DD it was 17w, but the other two it's been closer to 13w when I felt the first swishes.

I have a doppler. I know it's bad science, but I couldn't hack the nerves otherwise. It's been a lovely reassurance while movement is so sporadic - I've been listening in a few times a week and been able to find the HB since 14w. I may have also borrowed one of the head scan machines at work for a quick look.

RaRa that sounds a good package you have there, I hope it keeps you reassured. I'd have been surprised at the swab as you were!

RaRa25 · 07/11/2016 20:19

mygreensofa they tested my straight after DD was born, because she was so early I think it is what they do. I got a phone call from the docs a week later telling and advising to keep a close eye on DD as there is a chance she could have contracted it and if it develops can make them ill and in some cases fatal. They are higher risk up until about 3 months I think.
Looking back I did have symptoms but put it down to just being pregnant as it was my first. I was a little run down and had a yellow/greenish discharge. It sounds stupid, but I was so busy with work and a bit naive I didn't thing much of it. But definitely keeping an eye out this time.

CastleFeck · 08/11/2016 20:07

Ooh it's gone a bit quiet. Is everyone out buying babygrows and prams?

choccybiscuit · 08/11/2016 20:24

I thought that earlier.
So I'm 18+2 now, and just had my 16 week appointment yesterday. It went really well and now I have a ton of appointments coming up. A 20 week scan, a 20 week appointment with a consultant, a 28 week appointment with with midwife and will have another appointment sent through the post for my glucose test and anti d injection. That's alot of time off work Grin

choccybiscuit · 08/11/2016 20:26

Oh and I had to ask to hear the heartbeat, the mw said they don't routinely check for it as some mothers panic if they can't find it, doesn't mean there's anything wrong if they can't though.

BinglyBinglyBeep · 08/11/2016 20:42

Busy with prams and cots alright! Have only just come to grips with the fact that I'm likely to need them come April, now I need to shake the superstition around buying things in. I'll just wait until 12 week scan...I'll just wait until 16 week appt...maybe 20 week scan....Confused

Helbelle75 · 08/11/2016 21:14

We're waiting for the 20 week scan before we buy anything - hoping for some good sales in January as well.
Just been to my first pregnancy yoga class - I really liked it.

MonkeyArms · 08/11/2016 21:37

Experienced mums - am I mad to think that I might not need a pram for a newborn? We live very really so are normally off walking walking very rough footpaths. We go into town once in a blue moon. I can see that I might spend more time in village/town to do baby groups and stuff in future but travel systems seem incredibly expensive for the amount I can see myself using it. Am I mad to consider a car seat and sling?

Mummymulb16 · 08/11/2016 22:12

Monkey arms I think you will get tired of carrying baby around all the time and also a buggy is great for hangin your bag, changing bag and any shopping you grab. Also when baby is asleep when your out and about you can be hands free and sit back and enjoy a coffee/ tea.

itbeeps · 09/11/2016 10:50

hi all this is my first post!

Due 20th april Dc#2
Had DD1 @22weeks in march 2016 :( so trying not to panic about this one too much
:)

choccybiscuit · 09/11/2016 12:34

Welcome itbeebs!

marmitecheesetoast · 09/11/2016 17:05

Hi welcome itbeebs!

I am also waiting until after 20 week scan before buying anything. Planning on taking the afternoon off (work depending) and seeing if I can persuade DH to go for lunch and maybe a little nosey at the shops maybe pick up a cute wee outfit as a little something to start with!

I'm 17+5 and also haven't felt anything at all yet, plus didn't get to listen to heart beat at 16 week appt. I agree 12 to 20 weeks feels like torture... how do I know everything is ok in there?! Argh Sad

Work is slightly better this week at least and I enjoyed my second week at pregnancy yoga. Feeling hopeful it could be a good place to make friends.

MonkeyArms · 09/11/2016 20:16

mummymulb the sleeping baby bit is the bit I was wondering about... need to invent an inflatable Moses basket!

Mummymulb16 · 09/11/2016 20:55

Inflatable Moses basket sounds like a fab idea Wink

Very quiet on here ladies what's going on with everyone is it the cold weather ?

ChatEnOeuf · 09/11/2016 21:45

Too much work, not enough MN!

Welcome itbeeps. Sorry to hear about your little one - my last one (DC2) was stillborn at 36w, so there's plenty of understanding and hand-holding here.

There's no routine GBS test on the NHS, so if you want it you need to do it privately. Relatively cheap at about £30 - well worth it for the peace of mind, but you'll need antibiotics in labour if you have it. I've watched a baby deteriorate rapidly from GBS meningitis - most frightening thing ever - he clung onto this world by his fingertips.

I'm not buying anything until we're home and dry. I have nappies already and I will probably need to go and get some tiny baby vests, but that's it. All the rest can be done later.

summerskittles91 · 10/11/2016 08:40

Hello everyone! Definitely been busier at work :(
Has anyone looked into getting an IKEA cot? I did loads of research and apparently they're really good? Need to pop into store and actually see how they are. Just wondered if anyone already owns one?

Hello itbeeps and all the other new joiners :)

Really surprised at the difference in midwife appointments, mine haven't been great so far especially because for both appointments I've had a cover midwife and not the actual one who is at my surgery. So whenever people say if you're worried ring the midwife, I feel a bit awkward.

20 week scan on Tuesday so the nerves are creeping back in a bit, just hope everything goes well.
