Thread five for the chattiest bunch of preggers ladies you've ever had the pleasure of encountering. We're greeting the second trimester with excitement and apprehension, and lots of questions, humour, reassurance, empathy and advice.

Fourth thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/2684139-february-2017-thread-4-are-we-the-chattiest-bunch-or-what

Mimi, good news on the steak front! My midwife said at my booking appointment that rare steak is safe to eat :) Yum yum!

SBSparkles · 04/08/2016 20:45

Readyfortwo what a lovely story about making friends in your class!! DH and I have moved a lot and lived abroad then spent a long time swamped in ivf fever so looking forward to the new lease of life our little one will bring! Bring on the baby latte groups and massage and toddler clubs! I do remember my mum always referring to her friends she met 'at baby club' - I think she made most of her friends because of me and my brother! My DH would love a group of lads to go out with - I think he's sick of being around me all the time nattering on about baby stuff!
Keeping up what a gorgeous pic! It's so clear!

SBSparkles · 04/08/2016 20:48

2manysweets thanks for sharing that story - it's really reassuring!! Won't put any pressure on any particular thing! I am a first time mum and sadly don't have my own mum around anymore to ask her things do I'll be getting all the info I can! I don't have a clue about what to do other than what I've seen on 'one born every minute!' So I'll hit all the groups but see the whole new friendships thing as a long term goal x

Readyfortwo · 04/08/2016 20:54

Aw thanks Sparkles, I hated rhyme time so got a bit of a rep for turning up 5 mins before the end so that I could go for coffee & cake without having to do the naff singing. In the end I created my own event on a Friday afternoon called 'wine time'- as you can imagine it was very popular & I had tons of mums rock up to my little flat clutching bottles of wine & tubs of cake of a Friday. It was our little way of celebrating getting through another week! Very happy memories :-)

SpinALittleFaster · 04/08/2016 21:06

I didn't do NCT last time because I couldn't justify the cost until fairly late on, then it was fully booked. I met other mums on mat leave through baby groups and there's a great local Facebook page for arranging days out. I actually met my best mum friend on our mumsnet antenatal group.

SBSparkles · 04/08/2016 21:11

Readyfortwo ahhh hilarious! It seems like such a way off being able to drink wine again! It really is all about the tea and cake (and wine!) lol! X

kikisdelivery · 04/08/2016 21:18

I got told by my midwife that a small glass of wine at a celebration now and then wouldn't be too harmful. I've not taken her up on it yet, but DPs brother is getting married in a few weeks, so I'm currently fantasising about the wedding toast with champagne Smile. I'll see how I feel on the day of course - I've not even fancied booze recently - but she seemed to be following the "we don't know for certain it isn't harmful, so if you're going to have alcohol have it in proper moderation" school, rather than the completely teetotal side.

In other news, we got our combined results back today, following Monday's scan, which all came in as low-risk. I'm so relieved! I'm 38, so was crapping myself wondering how much my age would be a factor.

wispaxmas · 04/08/2016 21:43

kiki, TOO harmful? A single glass of wine wouldn't be harmful at all! Definitely have a glass if you want to.

I did NCT last time and it was a colossal waste of money. I didn't pay attention to the fact that the area for the class was quite spread out and the people in it all lived pretty far from me. I took it to make mum friends and didn't make a single one, just people I would say hi to on the street really. I didn't learn anything useful in them either, as I found my mumsnet antenatal bus/fb group far FAR more helpful. I also made a few good friends from that as on the FB group we got to know each other 'in real life' and there are several who live close to me- one of whom actually ended up having her baby just a few hours after I had DD and we were in beds next to each other in recovery!! My experience with NCT isn't universal, though, as I know several people who are really close to their NCT friends. I'm sad that we didn't really click with anyone and they were too far to really try after the initial couple months.

wispaxmas · 04/08/2016 21:45

I should have added, on the subject of booze, there is definitely evidence in support of light drinking not being of any harm to a foetus. Of the top of my head I don't have a link, but it was covered in 'Expecting Better,' which I will wholeheartedly recommend again just in case anyone has missed me (and anyone else who has read it!) going on and on and on about it.

wispaxmas · 04/08/2016 21:48

Also, great news on all the scans! I've missed a few pages of the thread, though, so I know I have missed loads. FX for everyone having scans in the coming days.

kikisdelivery · 04/08/2016 21:57

Wispa I think I love you for your booze facts. I mean, it's probably just the hormones and the thought that I'm not going to frazzle the tadpole with a wine at the weekend every now and then, but still... Flowers Wine

MimiDiddy · 04/08/2016 22:06

Thanks for the info Bumble but advice on the NHS website is still that rare steak should be avoided. We've had a few false starts to get to this stage so I'm going to follow all the rules (already had enough of beating myself about if I'd done something wrong).

PhoebeGeebee · 04/08/2016 22:55

Another vote here for Expecting Better - so so useful for debunking those myths and the overwhelming amount of advice and do's/dont's

I limit myself to one drink a week, but only if I really fancy it and always with food.

Bumblebee33 · 04/08/2016 23:48

Fair enough Mimi. I hadn't realised the nhs were saying something different to my nhs midwife! The conflicting advice is so confusing and I tend to err on the side of caution with most of it.

Happy wedding day evergreen! WineCakeSmile have a brill day!

I'm also a fan of Expecting Better. For anyone not familiar, the author is an economist who obsessed about all the data and made sense of it all so we don't have to. Whole heartedly trust it because it's based on facts and research. She even went as far to suggest that moderate drinking was good for baby. Though I'm too chicken to try it.

ButtonTum · 05/08/2016 07:31

Argh just lost a long post...

Happy wedding day ever! SmileWineCake

Also a fan of Expecting Better. Mainly because the author is an economist and went to the trouble of researching lots of data before she compiled the book. I seem to recall she even went as far to suggest that moderate drinking is actually good for the baby's intelligence long term although I'm too chicken to try it.
