JellyBellyBump · 24/01/2007 10:16

Can I just ask a question about homebirths. I'm Dutch and in Holland a homebirth always the first option, only when there are complications will you be moved to the hospital. So i'd quite like to have a homebirth as it's natural back home. But aren't you worried about the noise and the neighbours? Not planning on a scientology silent type birth, but i can just hear my husband saying: Darling can you keep the noise down, it's 3am...

ShowOfHands · 24/01/2007 10:23

My next door neighbours are in their 60s. They have very noisy, very inappropriate sex at all sorts of ungodly hours. If they can be slapping up against our adjoining wall screaming in pleasure, I can have one little baby.

To be slightly more serious, yes it has crossed my mind. I am a very private and usually quiet person and worry about the neighbours hearing my pained screams. However, I will be so much more relaxed in my own home (and won't be hearing other women scream through the walls unless said neighbours are at it again) and hope that I will manage the pain well enough not to be that loud.

ShowOfHands · 24/01/2007 10:24

And I'm sure little Mathilda will be fairly noisy too in ensuing months so it'll just be a baptism of fire for them.

I would like to see a labouring woman's response to 'darling could you keep the noise down' though...

dejags · 24/01/2007 10:30

PMSL at your neighbours SOH.

DH also worries about the noise - I couldn't give a monkeys. Our house is detached, so shouldn't be too much of an issue.

largeginandtonic · 24/01/2007 10:32

Hellooooo, dejags im having a boy and im 24 weeks and this baby is #6. I borrow them from SOH and TYG (whenever she appears) >

SOH eat that bacon sarnie you know your gonna... I dont like pink, but then im having a boy so just as well. One girl is quite enough for me, hee, heeee

I had home births with the last 3, dd was atransfer in to hosp at the last minute but it was all fine so dont panic. I did shout, grunt, moan and moo a bit and did worry about the neighbours hearing but they never did. It was at night with the boys too, well ds#3 was born at 1.40am and ds#4 was 8.20, so if they were gonna hear me they would have done at that time.

Im having another home birth with this one, im not sure it counts as active choice tho as ds#4 came out in 40mins....

Online delivery this time, the girls are all prepared on the thread, arent you girls????!!!

Right am off to hosp with dd now, back later

dejags · 24/01/2007 10:39

Just a quick post to see if my profile thingy pops up in the top right hand corner of my post.

Frenchsmallfry · 24/01/2007 10:47

Morning all,
Hi dejags-same due date as me and Im having a girl as well..

SOH-Im not so fond of pink.DDs nursery is painted in Farrow and Ball very white white, with a sort of modern floral curtain from Laura Ashley-so have thus avoided the pink altogether but it still looks little girly.

I want it to snow some more in London as my boss told me to go home if it did becuause I live so far out.Not obliging currently which is a shame as would give literallly anything to be curled up in bed right now with the cat behind my knees and Fern and Phil on the telly. And a plate of leafy green veg, (or perchance bourbon biscuits) close to hand to up the old iron levels.DD woke at 5.30 this morning as well, which didnt help as dh away on business, and then she was very crotchety whilst we were getting ready, spat out her medicine, wouldnt have a drink, threw her full doidy cup across the room soaking me in the process and was a general terror.Had to keep reminding myself, 'child is ill, child is ill', to avoid losing the plot..Poor mite, thats all she needs- a lunatic Mother when she most likely feels like death warmed up...Was almost glad to be on the way to work till I saw the gridlock on the M25 then got here to find freezing old people as the fire alarm went off in the night and the numpty night staff failed to reset it..Grrr

Here, largegandt you are Delia esque-you may know..When cooking for babies of approx 1 year old, ie my dd, is it considered child abuse to use oxo cubes for stock? Will it harm the child as someone told me they were full of salt and what have you..But if so what else can you use that isnt, other than making your own as I dont have time as a rule to do this?DD eats pretty much what we eat, pre seasoning, but that does include oxo stock if we've used it and I was laying awake last night, insomnia is my current nemesis, I convinced myself that if I continued using oxo cubes in food for dd I would probably cause her kidneys to fail or somesuch..Can anyone put my mind at rest or suggest and alternative at all?

Come on you blighter, snow, snow!Im off to eat some prawn crackers..

JellyBellyBump · 24/01/2007 11:26

BIG Let me quote you what my DH said about my idea of a homebirth.

I'll need to mop afterwards !

Two words...

Floorboards & Pebbles

(Pebbles is my cat who follows me around everywhere and does not leave me alone the moment I get home)

SKYTVADDICT · 24/01/2007 11:32

Morning all

LG&T - hope you get some good news on the Navy front. Thats a worry you really don't need.

I went to Boots who can order in Floradix but told me to go to Health Food shop first. Was with a friend and car park had nearly ran out so will be going tomorrow.

Lwatkins - glad you seem to be getting sorted.

Welcome back Dejags

I quite fancy a homebirth and thought if I don't tell anybody until its too late?

cinnamontam · 24/01/2007 11:49

Hey all - sitting down to chicken noodle soup and a toasted bagel for lunch. Working from home today because of the SNOW!!!! OMG so excited

I'm Australian ok - we get a little excited at this cold white stuff. The cats are going mental as well particularly this morning at 7am when it was all dry and crunchy. They won't come inside. Having way too much fun.

Hi Dejags - great to have you back online.

LG&T - i really hope the Navy can be a bit more accomodating than they are at the mo. My DH is off on Monday for 3 weeks and I'm not looking forward to it however I don't have 5 kids to take care of on my own plus bean on the inside. You really are SuperWoman

LWatkins - it sounds like things are really slipping into place. That is so great

SOH - hilarious about your next door neighbours

SKYTVADDICT · 24/01/2007 12:02

Yipee. I've added some photos of the DDs to my profile. Not the best photos in the world but the only ones that would download due to size!

Frenchsmallfry · 24/01/2007 12:20

lovely dd's sky, they are going to spoil that new bubs rotten.

Cinnamontam what does your dh do to be away for three weeks, is he in the forces?
You don't have to answer that if you don't want to.

I'm sooooooooo tired today, slept really well and did get a lay in, maybe thats the problem! Just don't feel like doing anything.

Hello. Just been at a "Managing your Maternity Leave" workshop for the last FOUR HOURS. I had VERY low expectations, but it turned out to be quite useful and was nice to chat to some other pregnant ladies in the firm.

Part of it was to help me to "motivate myself for the last few weeks of work". Prob shouldn't be on MN straight after it finished then.

Nice to have you back Dejags. I've heard about the SA tendency to CS births as well. A girl here was telling me about her friend who has had her dates moved due to a growth scan at about32 weeks (notoriously inaccurate as you know) and so they've decided to section her. No idea how they can justify that decision, or indeed why she has agreed. Different culture I suppose. I'm glad you've found a supportive midwife. That's great.

Back later. x

dejags · 24/01/2007 13:11

Thanks Twelveyeargap.

The whole CS thing here drives me nuts. My DH's cousin was told that she had to have a CS because the baby hadn't fully engaged at 37 weeks (1st child).

I was like WTF??? Gynaes also blatantly propagate the myth that a VBAC is impossible. grrrrrrr

Gynaes will routinely tell you that they don't "do" night time deliveries. I am being looked at like a loon for having a midwife led homebirth.

twelveyeargap · 24/01/2007 13:22

Perhaps it's just a bit old fashioned? My mum went private with me (don't know where they got the money). Her gynae insisted that her long cycle was "irrelevant" and insisted she was overdue when she in fact, wasn't and had her induced. She only found out later that he was about to go to Spain on a golfing holiday.

Well done for sticking to your guns. It's people like you that propogate "new" ideas and help to change the system.

twelveyeargap · 24/01/2007 13:45

I'm mad for raw onions. Not like, on their own, but I want them in sandwiches and salads. I must stink. Eww. Off to find something oniony for lunch.

Hope you get on ok with DD today LG&T.

MUST. GET. OFF. MUMSNET. AND. DO. SOME. WORK.

notsolilKel · 24/01/2007 14:20

I think you're all so brave for going for homebirth. I for one am too scared and have opted for section (dejags I know you think I must be crazy...). Everyone's experience is so different though, it's just what's right for me . The date is 25 May, and I desperately hope it doesn't come earlier!! (DS was 37 weeks)

All this talk of onions has given me a craving for toffee. . Best go dig some out.

Oh, anyone with 2 little ones (or more!) willing to share their routine with me? I'm having late-night panics about managing with a 15-mo-old who can't feed himself yet or walk properly and a new baby...

(p.s. profile updated!)

dejags · 24/01/2007 14:26

not at all lilkel.

I have no problem with CS's and would happily have one if I needed one.

I was just complaining about the 85% CS rate in South Africa. Chances are - even if you do go into hospital for a vaginal birth - you'll end up with a CS because the doctors don't like staying after hours.

I feel awful that I have come across like that - I really, really didn't mean to offend .

dejags · 24/01/2007 14:27

I feel really bad. Not even been back on this thread for one day and I've offended .

notsolilKel · 24/01/2007 14:40

oh shush, no offense taken. my skin is thicker than that ...really.

on to other topics: which bouncy chair to get for our DD on the way? I have on from DS but it was a hand-me-down, the cover is shot, and TBH I just hate it cuz it weighs about 10kg and that's just too heavy for easy of lugging round the house. I'd like a nice lightweight girly one. (SOH, it needn't be pink!!)

notsolilKel · 24/01/2007 14:44

like, this type: bigger bouncer or this type \link{http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/bruhome/bruactivebaby/bruactivebabyrockersbouncers/734845} ... is the smaller kind too small for a wee baby?? Is it worthwhile to have one that vibrates?!? Headcushions?? Goodness me...

Oh bugger the neighbor's chainsaw activity has awoken DS (currently a teething beast).

dejags · 24/01/2007 14:44

thank heavens.... seems it's me who needs a thicker skin eh?

notsolilKel · 24/01/2007 14:45

sorry here's the smaller one smaller bouncer

right, sorry for hijacking thread all afternoon...

dejags · 24/01/2007 14:47

we have an adjustable chicco one. It's very comfy and much more sturdy (but not heavy) than the wire-framed bouncy chairs. It's great because it is adjustable so can be laid flat if the baby falls asleep and lifted up when weaning - our DS2 who was a very big boy used it until about 7 months.
