To all who have a child already and have the mattress from last time, is it not acceptable to reuse the last one as long as the protector has been washed?! That's what I was planning on doing

rumisyum · 05/06/2016 20:56

Sophia, I'm going at the start of July! I'm so excited! I reckon it'll be fine & the babies will love it. Grin

stranded hope things ease up at work for you soon! I think the left sided thing is because of the direction babies' tend to corkscrew through the pelvis during labour - it's easier/shorter if they're to the left to begin with. Thing is, all that positioning stuff can happen during so-called pre-labour without you even knowing... But I was pretty big into that sort of stuff in my last pregnancy & (probably more through luck than anything else) had a lovely birth, so I should probably stop lying back on the sofa & give that stuff some due consideration again.Blush

rumisyum · 05/06/2016 20:57

I'm doing the same, Dileas. No idea if that's recommended or not, but our stuff is still in really good nick, & any germs in the mattress can be readily found in the rest of our household anyway...

Dileas29 · 05/06/2016 21:17

rumisyum oh phew! I'll make sure it's all aired and whatever can be washed will be...Blush
Do you mean to lie on left instead of on your back whilst watching TV etc? Willing to try it for a chance of an easy labour, last time my contractions started at 1am (so funny how majority start through the night) and I gave birth by 12:45pm so not too bad really!

PickleBot · 05/06/2016 21:56

We decided to get a bed nest too. I think the new mattress thing is to do with storage conditions and fungal spores. If it's been inside the house and nit in the garage, basement or lift though I can't see the harm. This baby will be going in DS's old cot mattress and all when it grows out of the crib.

There is loads of info on baby positioning on spinning babies website, I recall from last time it's pretty informative... Not that it helped me!

While we were away I decided I'm going to have an elective section, I posted a thread here talking about my last birth experience and quite a lot of people commented that it was a bad one which I was quite surprised by, I didn't think it was that far beyond the norm but apparently so! I decided the mist important thing for me is to feel a big more in control of things and nit to spend the best part of the first week of my babies life not sleeping at all! So elective it is. Now I just have to tell my mw next time I see her.

PickleBot · 05/06/2016 21:57

Also anyone else insanely tired? I could easily sleep for well over 12 hours at a stretch. Shame I never get to!

strandedabroad · 05/06/2016 22:06

Sophia I would go! Perhaps your sister can have an emergency friend on standby in case you really don't feel like it on the night?

Rumi thank you, that's exactly what they were saying... It's very interesting, I need to do a bit more reading. The spinning babies website is indeed very informative.

Dileas basically yes, lie on your left side at night, and don't slump on to your back when relaxing (easier said than done). So instead of the sofa, a pregnancy ball to lean on to, sitting cross legged on raised blocks, and spending time on your hands and knees if you can. This will also help avoiding the baby being back to back, as the back is the heavy bit and as you lean forward it will naturally move towards your front. Hope this makes sense.

sits on sofa and feels guilty

Shanster · 06/06/2016 00:15

Evening all! Is anyone else thinking of using a 'snuggle nest'? I remember from the other two that I'll fall asleep in bed with the baby a couple of times after a night feed. But my DH thinks it can't be safe - I couldn't find any negative reviews online, and I'm tempted.

Feeling much more organized, at 28 weeks I finally went out and bought some baby gear yesterday - a cot, mattress, car seat, pushchair, some clothes, nappies, slapp sac. I gave all my baby gear to charity last autumn, could kick myself now!! I'll pick up the other stuff at second hand baby sales later, but at least we have the essentials now. We moved house a month ago and although the house still needs major work, I unpacked the last of the boxes today. I haven't left the house but according to my fitbit I've done 10,500 steps and climbed 42 flights of stairs. Now my back is protesting if I stand or walk...

Shanster · 06/06/2016 00:18

Dileas29 - I used the same mattress for my oldest two...it had been in constant use from the first, just gave it a good clean and swapped the oldest into a bed and baby straight into the cot. Was fine :) I couldn't justify buying another.

Dileas29 · 06/06/2016 04:56

stranded thanks for the info and everyone else too! Will check out that site too

Britnyspears · 06/06/2016 08:48

Morning all! Summer has certainly arrived. Albeit temporarily. I feel like a sweaty lump.

Thanks plimsol did they find out what was wrong? Hope you are feeling better soon.

christine my Snuzpod has just arrived- my first purchase!!! Will prob get an Ikea cot and mattress for later, the one that converts into a toddler bed with draws.

fizzyboo Pretentious? Brighton?! How very dare you hahha. Only joking. Prices in Brighton are certainly pretentious. But us born and bred Brightonians blame Londoners moving down for all the ills. Wink

Sophia go for it! My mum took me to Bob Marley when I was in utero (showing my age) but I can't stand reggae now.

Salene · 06/06/2016 08:51

Just catching up with this now

I'm a veggie for last 30 years but don't raise my son as one, he can decide when he older. My OH isn't a veggie. I do give my son quorn and tofu something though but he also gets red meat, fish and chicken

The mattresses thing - I was told never to use a mattresses for a 2nd child due to the fact any spit from milk or sick can react with the fire protection coatings are release has which they think could be link to cot death. But it's something that happens over a period of time so that's why it's ok for 1st babies but should be disgarded by the time more babies come along

I'm not sure how much truth is in it, but I'm a stickler for following advice as if something happened if never forgive myself. So we binning our mattresse even though it's hardly been used. But gutted as it was £180.

Did everyone remember or be told about whooping cough jab..? As I know some MW are a bit crap at reminding you about stuff..?

Also who is doing home Strep B testing .? I ordered mine the other day ready for when I'm 36 weeks. It's £35 for those who interested in it.

Those who don't know what it is, basically it's a harmless bacteria that lives in bum and vagina and causes us no hassles, it comes and goes but it can be passed on to baby in birth canal and make them very ill and kill them.

If you know you can it at the moment (through home testing kit) you just make labour ward aware when you arrive and they hook you up to a drop in anti biotic while you labour and it prevents baby getting ill. Most other Europe countries test for it but the NHS dosent.

Salene · 06/06/2016 08:52

Stupid iPhone

Should say has released from mattress

Hope you can make out what I'm trying to say , thanks to my phone changing words 🙈

Britnyspears · 06/06/2016 09:07

Salene
My midwife wanted me to have whooping cough at 20 weeks as she said NHS are changing guidelines for women to have it earlier. I was nervous so postponed it to the previously recommended timeline of around 29 weeks. I am still nervous, but couldnt live with myself if she got whooping cough. Eeek!
Has everyone else had it yet?

I also planned on ordering the strep b test. Thanks for the reminder!

Biscuitswithtea · 06/06/2016 09:31

I had whooping cough jab 3 wks ago at 28 weeks. It's a bit sore afterwards, but not too bad. Chased up with an anti-d jab and all the routine blood tests and my arm felt like a pin cushion!

I dug out all our newborn baby clothes yesterday and put them in the wash. Might even make a list for the hospital bag too soon! Oh, my top tip for hospital bags - by all means lay out what you want to take but get your DH/DP to pack the bag. They will be the ones who are scrabbling around trying to find stuff on demand, not you!! says the voice of experience, remembering DH have to tip everything out onto the bed to find anything

bexh83 · 06/06/2016 09:33

Britney I have my wooping cough vac this afternoon, I booked it with my local nurse. Hate injections, cant even look at a syringe and now im volunteering for everything going!

Sick of work now, had a bleed on Friday (dark and mucussy) but its the first one of my preganancy. Had spoken to my midwife by lunch and she put my mind at ease - I had endometroisis and she feels my cervix could be stretching and inflaming that. I decided to go home at 2:30 because I was shaken and tired. I manage a team of enthusiastic blokes who were doing my nut in when I could have done with a little cry!

I've had no sick days and have been taking holidays on a friday when I have mid wife appts. Yet the person taking over from me made a massive song and dance about me going early and working from home one day this week (so I can have the injection!), really loudly and lauging as I left. Made it sound like I was slacking when I feel ive done everything possible to not be. It was going really well i felt untill then.

Fizzyboo · 06/06/2016 10:00

Salene where can I get the strep b test from?
I had to ask my midwife about whooping cough, she was pretty woolly about it, said I should ask the nurse or doc about it, I'm in to see the doc tomorrow anyway (keep going deaf in one ear!) so I'll ask then.

Brit haha, b town vs h town!! Was in Brighton only on Friday buying baby clothes and cramming wagamamas into my mouth (as we aren't even that advanced in Hastings Wink)

Bex oh Lordy, don't pay em any mind! But you're legally entitled to take time off for preg matters not use your holiday up! Keep your eyes on the prize, I've 2 more weeks till blissful leave begins, can't come soon enough!

Also, should I wash brand new baby clothes and blankets and sheets etc before I use on babes or not? Silly I know, but I'm not sure!!

Dileas29 · 06/06/2016 10:01

salene that too makes sense along with the fungal growth. I'm just grudging the idea of replacing Moses basket mattress, rocking crib mattress, mattress for carrycot pram part and bigger cot. Will see what DH wants to do.

I had Unknown group b strep with DD who was very ill and if it hadn't been for my retired midwife mum being present to say something wasn't right at birth I dread to think what could've happened as my own midwife was more preoccupied about the end of her shift. had a test again not long and still positive for group b so will have antibiotics during labour regardless but might ask for another test around 37 weeks. Have signed so many petitions to fight for this to be a routine test. It only costs the healthboard around £11 to do ffs!

FourForYouGlenCoco · 06/06/2016 10:10

Sophia I would definitely go if you're up for it - I'm due a week or so before you and am off to Isle of Wight festival on Wednesday for nearly a week. Can't wait!
stranded yes, 'LOA' is the best position for birth - left occipito-anterior - so baby on the left side, facing your back. But don't get too het up on it - they'll all come out one way or another! And babies can shift position all the way up to and even after labour starts.
Shan wow, 42 flights of stairs!! Congratulations/commiserations on moving - this Wednesday will be a fortnight since we moved in. I've told DH we're never moving house again, and definitely not while I'm pregnant!
Lifelong veggie here too - next year I'll be 27 and it'll be 20 years since I gave up meat! Not bringing DD up veggie though - DH is a committed carnivore and she definitely takes after him. Will never forget her at about 7 months old, chomping her way through half a steak Grin I don't cook meat though so neither of them eat loads of it - it's mostly as a weekend treat a couple of times a month, plus sometimes in sandwiches and stuff.
Salene I completely forgot about the whooping cough jab Sad the 28-32week timeframe fell right when we were moving so it just slipped my mind. Need to ask about having it done a bit late, hopefully I can still get it and it'll be ok.
Getting a new cot mattress here - but it's been 3 years since we used the cot and the mattress would have been in the attic all that time, so wouldn't have been safe to use for bub anyway. If it had been in continuous use I'd probably be much more relaxed about using it!
Pickle I'm flipping knackered too! Been so nonstop lately, plus I'm awake a few times a night now getting comfy/needing a wee, then DD comes in with us halfway through the night so that wakes me up too. Friday I was so done in we had a lazy day, chilling on the sofa with DVDs - was just what the dr ordered! Felt much better afterwards - is a day off an option?!

Salene · 06/06/2016 10:31

Here is a list of strep b testing labs

gbss.org.uk/information-and-support/testing-for-gbs/ecm-test-where-how/

Yeah I'm grudging about mattress too 😳. One bonus I have is I bought a little green sheep two way mattress for cot which is now on second side in toddler bed with my son so it's getting its use, I only need to replace bed side nest one. I will but another little green sheep one seems it's lasts right up to 5 years old. With its two way system thing.

Even more a grudge is my cacoonababy it was £130 and used for 3 months but we binned it after use and are buying a new one as it truely was a godsend in first few months to get some sleep.

Dileas29 · 06/06/2016 10:54

four if it makes you feel better I was reminded at midwife appointment that if I'm getting whooping vaccine it needed to be this week (31 weeks) and as I'm currently on holiday on the isle of Lewis this was not possible to book also when I called Doc to book for my return he said its out of stock until 10th June so I told them midwife said it had to be last week and he came on the phone himself and said I can get it done right up till birth apparently! Not sure who to believe but getting it late anyway!

Salene · 06/06/2016 11:18

Dileas better late than never im sure so I'd be the same and still get it done too

hgleslie89 · 06/06/2016 12:12

Suddenly realised that I need to buy nursing bras since I'm planning on breastfeeding. Not sure what size to go for - I've gone up about 3 cup sizes while pregnant and I know I won't shrink back instantly, but how long will it take? Tempted to just buy my current size and deal with them being too big after a while.

Britnyspears · 06/06/2016 12:18

Biscuits Thanks. It must have been nice getting out all those tiny clothes!

Bex gah they sound like a total idiot. Ignore! Glad the bleed was nothing.

Fizzy what did you get and from where? I haven't got anything yet as I'm always so anxious. But I think I should soon.
Currently signed off work so some online shopping could be a tonic. I am loving the look of stuff on JL and M&S so far. And I imagine grabbing some good value bits at Tesco etc when I can venture out.

I think the advice is get the whooping jab as soon as you can, if its late, don't worry just book in asap.

Fizzyboo · 06/06/2016 12:29

Britny in Brighton I got some bits from jojo Mamman Bebe, that t shirt shop in the laines that has punk babygrows in the window, (I got a tiny hoody with sailor tats designs, couldn't help it) and some stuff in m&s. Have got a bunch of the basic babygrows, blankets, leggings etc in the supermarkets.

With all the talk of new mattresses, it's got me wondering about the only 2nd hand item I've bought, the pram/pushchair.
I've bought a new mattress for the carry cot top, and a new colour pack fabric bit (it's an original oyster) but I can't find a new colour pack fabric bit that fits the buggy bit.
As its 2nd hand, I've no idea how it was stored previously, is this ok as its a pram (though I was thinking of using the carrycot top as a back up crib in another room)
I bought a steamer and was just going to steam the plastic bits...
