I have my HV visit tomorrow too. I'm actually a wee bit nervous! Both Hubby and I are in good jobs, have managed to keep son #1 alive for 5 years without major incident and keep a clean, mostly tidy house but I still have an irrational fear that she will come in and judge me unfit!! It is completely irrational but I can't help it! We never had a pre birth visit with my son.

I was talking to my friend today who had her 1 yr check with her HV today and she asked about the changes. HV said it was to do with the number of families who needed support who didn't turn up to appointments etc. I am all for early intervention so power to them but please don't judge me too harshly!!!!x

Sophia1984 · 04/07/2016 18:58

Christine I think it depends on what region you live in. It's a new thing here and is meant to be so you meet them first and get to know them when you're not a sleep-deprived zombie and could find it even more intimidating :-)

MrsZumbaDancer · 04/07/2016 19:12

One midwife said I wouldn't get a HV visit this time, the other said I would-I didn't get one before ds's birth, only afterwards (and was pretty pointless tbh)

Christinedonna · 05/07/2016 11:43

Is anyone else suffering with under boob sweat? Honestly if I'm not wearing a bra and just leave it, it drips from me!!

Fizzyboo · 05/07/2016 12:51

Well the HV has just left, and I've got to say, it went really well! We got straight on with talking about babes heart issues (as she only had my booking notes) and what was super informative is that her own daughter was also born with a heart condition, so I felt we were really on the same level. She didn't feel judgey or anything, seemed very pleased with all my questions and plans, I think she liked that I wanted her there and asked if she could come more often to weigh the baby etc as the hospital said I need to be extra vigilant about breathing and feeding issues and wasn't giving her the brush off! Also got the details for a free baby resuscitation course, so very pleased with that. Overall, def a positive experience! (And she kept complimenting my flat, so I guess all that extra crazed cleaning yesterday paid off ha! Wink)

Longtimelistener · 05/07/2016 14:00

Fizzy I didn't get a chance to post yesterday, but I meant to say the HV team in Hastings are all lovely in my experience. Glad it went well Smile
Did she mention that they have drop in clinics most days in different parts of town, so you can basically get baby weighed as often as you like? They stick a list of days and times in the back of baby's red book on their next visit I think..

Fizzyboo · 05/07/2016 15:25

Ahh yeah she did Long. Which pleased me too as I can pick which one I go to, because as you know, some bits of town are definitely more preferable to others! Such a shame you've left us!! My new pushchair/pram combo arrived mid HV visit, and I can't wait to go walking along the prom with it!

Fizzyboo · 05/07/2016 15:27

How was yours Lainey?

Sophia1984 · 05/07/2016 15:27

Got my follow-up midwife appointment tomorrow after my bump measuring small last week. Am nervous that the measurement won't have gone up again and I'll have to go for a growth scan, which will make me a nervous wreck. His movements have been totally fine and his heartbeat is always spot on, so I shouldn't worry..but I will! I just want him to be here safely now :-(

In happier news, DP is painting the nursery as I type. Not only do I love the colour (duck egg blue) but it's so nice to see him being all 'dad-like' :-)

Christinedonna · 05/07/2016 15:36

That's exciting sophia! That reminds me that on Sunday at the christening, watching OH hold 7month old god daughter and play with her melted my heart!!

Laineypopps · 05/07/2016 16:43

Fizzy it was a complete waste of time. She came in and basically chatted about the weather. I brought up feeding, nappies (we are doing reusable) and she was very non-committal to anything. I spoke to her about the GIRFEC agenda and how it would be affecting her job, as it does mine. To be honest, she didn't fill me with confidence. Ah well!! I'm fairly confident and I am making informed decisions about things so I don't feel too bad about it all. She did leave her number if I needed toget in touch.

On a separate note, sat in all morning for the nappy lady to deliver my nappies, no delivery!!! Grrr!! Popped out to my MIL and blooming missed my tesco delivery by 2 mins!!! Angry Think calm thoughts!!!x

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 05/07/2016 20:20

I'm just back from pregnancy yoga - really recommend trying it if anybody is needing a way to relax! I've found it really helpful.
Does the nappy lady deliver a selection for you to try? I'm still in the fence about whether or not to go with reuseable or not and I will definitely be using disposable to start with.

OwlinaTree · 05/07/2016 20:28

Glad hv went well fizzy. I had hv today, I've been put on iron tablets (boo). Other than that, all seems OK. She asked if I had packed my bag yet. Has anyone packed yet? I'm 34 weeks, so a little while to go yet.

hgleslie89 · 05/07/2016 20:38

Owlina I'm pretty much packed (36+3). It's helping me feel less nervous about the fact that I'm full term on Saturday gulp

Alfie I think the nappy lady does trial packs you can hire: www.thenappylady.co.uk/trial-nappy-kits.html There might also be a reusable nappy group local to you - I'm planning on hiring a variety pack from my local group to see which brand works for us before I combi to anything.

I've not heard anything about HV checks yet. Got my 37 week midwife appointment on Thursday, so maybe it'll be covered then. Or perhaps it's another way in which the NHS in Scotland is different?

rumisyum · 05/07/2016 22:13

Full term on Saturday, hgleslie! Babies soon come! Shock

35 weeks here today, & bloody cannot wait to not be heavily pregnant anymore, tbh. (Crossing my fingers this little one isn't comfy enough in there to keep me waiting till 42 weeks!)

Had my HV visit last week. Then again, I knew her from my DS. I didn't bother to clean as my DS was home & had pulled all his toys out as usual, so the mess covered any dirt - toddlers have their uses. Grin It took me a while to warm to the whole HV concept, but they can be really helpful at times.

Off to hoist myself into a quick bath before bed. So heavy these days, geez. This one feels like a giant compared to last time. Confused

Laineypopps · 05/07/2016 22:59

I filled in the questionnaire for the nappy lady Alfie and then ordered her suggestions. I have gone for little lamb nappies and cheeky wipes. To be honest, it comes down to financial gain for us. It's going to save us in the region of £1000 over the course of a year compared to using pampers and wipes and there is the resale value to add on to that. That's an extra month off with baby so a no brainer for me as well as the environmental benefit 😂

Lovely tesco delivery driver came back with my shopping and next door has my nappy lady delivery so feeling a bit happier now. Also, I went to my very first hypno birthing class tonight - only to find out it's tomorrow!!! I'm never early so had a good giggle about that!! Baby brain strikes again!!

Not packed my bag as such as we are going away next week for a few days and I'll be using bag but everything I need and baby needs is laid out in the nursery just in case.

On a completely separate note, has anyone watched The Affair? It's my guilty viewing just now...

Sophia1984 · 05/07/2016 23:19

Lainey I realised today that I had missed my 'Caring for a newborn' class this weekend - that doesn't fill me with confidence in my abilities!

I could really do with saving that kind of money, but I am the polar opposite of a domestic goddess and can't even manage to keep up with my own washing, so not sure I'd manage washing nappies :-/ Am hoping to give cloth nappies a go after first few crazy weeks/months though so will try the nappy lady questionnaire.

Jeezypeepers · 05/07/2016 23:59

I've packed a bag more or less...but finding it hard as keep taking things out as I need them! I'm 34+5 but already booked in for early delivery in 2 weeks so really should get organised Blush.

I've not heard anything from my HV; I'm in Scotland though - is it different up here?

Laineypopps · 06/07/2016 00:02

I'm in Scotland too Jeezy and had a letter a few weeks ago with the appointment time. It's being rolled out in Ayrshire and Arran from March to August but not sure about other NHS trusts.

Shanster · 06/07/2016 01:47

Getting closer ladies! No HV schedules for me, they don't have the concept in the US. Just got a letter from the hospital asking me to prepay the expected $4000 for hospital stay, which doesn't include any pediatric care or drugs (no gas and air here either). I already paid my OB/GYN for the delivery, things have changed so much here in 5 years since my last baby!!! We'll be bankrupt by the time he arrives. Hopefully it'll be a nice natural birth because I can't afford a c-section. How I miss the NHS!!! I have a scan on Friday to see how big this baby is, so hoping he's smaller than the last one!!

Sophia1984 · 06/07/2016 11:36

Just had midwife appointment and bump is still measuring small. Sea convinced it's just how he's lying as he's 2/5 engaged but has referred me for a growth scan tomorrow. I'm terrified and don't know how to cope with the anxiety till then. Had a panic attack at the doctors :-(

plimsolls · 06/07/2016 13:42

sophia You poor thing. First of all, come and post on the new thread- this one is full and I don't like to think of you left languishing on this thread all anxious and alone.

most importantly- bump measuring is so imprecise. Mine was 34 cm a few weeks ago, now it is 30cm! But my baby hasn't shrunk! I am sure that yours is fine and to be honest, even if your baby is small, the likelihood that it indicates any other problem is absolutely minimal. The growth scan tomorrow will reassure you. Is there anything which usually helps your anxiety? distraction/calming exercises/etc? Cake
