I've just had a look on the 'what to expect' website and this is the advice they give about mosquito repellent:

Use an insect repellent containing 10 percent DEET or picaridin, both of which are safe for pregnant and nursing women and children older than 2 months when used according to the product label

Also, remember that Deet decreases the spf in your sun block so you'll need to keep applying that to make sure you don't turn into a lobster (I learnt that lesson the hard way!).

Clank I hope you're feeling better today!!

Nickname1980 · 22/05/2016 10:05

Lol, the wrist bands I got from Amazon came in a pack of 10 I think! fresh

The nurse who told me 100% deet is OK said that pregnant women are more likely to get bitten anyway because of increased blood flow or something like that? even out of pregnancy I get bitten loads! But went to Scotland to visit family last week with my wrist bands and deet didn't get touched by a mozzie! (Usually always end up with bites on that trip!)!

Didn't realise that about sun cream, bluesky!

climbingcheesecake · 22/05/2016 11:42

hello! I haven't posted in ages so just read back through to catch up. Great to hear all the gender news!!

I am 21 weeks now, and have my scan this week - still don't know whether to find out sex or not! dh wants to know, but I am not sure and I don't know why?! what reasons are there to not find out?

I had a midwide appointment and have put on 4-5kgs so I am trying to eat more sensibly again now and am able to do a bit more exercise and I am feeling loads better. I'm walking loads and have been swimming which was so nice.

We're going on holiday to Spain soon, so I asked the mw about zika and she said that it's fine as there have been no cases in europe yet - that could change later in the summer but for now, it seems safe so we're going to go. I'll probably use loads of mossy spray anyway!

Have felt loads of movement lately and dh has felt it too which is cool, I don't know where it is when it's not moving though.

Afreshstartplease · 22/05/2016 11:44

Think I'll pick up some jungle formula and order some wrist bands then.

I hope I don't freak out massively over there.

I've ordered some summer trousers to wear in light colours as ivr read this is advised but I have struggled to find many for my leg length

Afreshstartplease · 22/05/2016 11:45

Anyone know how hot it needs to be for the mosquitoes or does it not work like that?

Afreshstartplease · 22/05/2016 11:46

Climbing so reassuring to read that!

clank2 · 22/05/2016 14:44

thank you blueskygirl, unfortunately still having diarrhoea every 30 minutes and in bed feeling very ill, even sips of water go straight through me x

Northernlight22 · 22/05/2016 16:07

20 week scan tomorrow - dreading it. Today I was brave though and told my husband how much I hate scans (haven't dared share that with him considering everyone else is always super excited about them!) ive hated them ever since my mc, and even though I've had scans since then with no problem I'm terrified for those first 30 seconds whilst they get the position and find a heartbeat.

I just hope everything's going to be ok. Sleepless night ahead!

Blueskygirl30 · 22/05/2016 18:33

Northern I totally understand your feelings about scans. I had an ectopic and can still vividly replay in my mind the moment she turned and said there was nothing in my uterus, it's just horrendous having a scan where something isn't right. For my 12 week scan I was so nervous I wanted to cry sat in the waiting area and could barely talk when I got into the room. For my 20 week scan last week I decided to focus purely on the fact we were hoping to find out the sex and this worked quite well to take my mind off all the stuff the scan is really for, at least until we were on the way to the hospital! So don't worry about not being excited about the scan, it's understandble. Hopefully after your scan tomorrow you'll feel so much better though! After that scan was the first time I felt excited about the pregnancy.

Afreshstartplease · 22/05/2016 18:37

I'm sure it will be OK northern but it is a worrying time for lots of ladies I think

Funnily when I had DC1 I didn't worry about a single thing being wrong EVER, honestly I was so naive and carefree it now amazes me. Maybe it's the fact I was only 19, or maybe it's the fact I hadn't heard all the horror stories I have by now!

climbingcheesecake · 22/05/2016 18:50

Fresh I don't know how hot it has to be.

What I have read, is that it is only a certain type of mozzy that might carry the virus and they aren't even sure how effective it would be at carrying it if it could. They are the ones that bite in the day though, rather than at night.

I feel like I am writing about zombies now, I am watching too much walking dead.

FuzzyOwl · 22/05/2016 20:02

I also completely understand your fear of scans Northern and I think anyone who has had a mc/mmc does as well. I always just ask them to let me know as soon as they can that there is a heartbeat and everyone I have seen has been nice enough to do so. Stupidly enough, when it comes to 20 week scans I am still so scared of being told that there isn't a heartbeat that I don't get around to worrying about whether something might be found to be wrong with the baby. Will be thinking of you tomorrow and really hope everything goes well.

Clank please see your doctor tomorrow as what you are going through sounds awful.

Glad it's not just me, was starting to think I was a nutter since everyone else I speak to seems super excited! I'm attempting an early night and i'll report back once I'm home.

Clank, take care and defo see a doctor x

EnoughAlready999 · 23/05/2016 07:04

I'm 19 weeks, due 16/10/16.

2nd baby, unplanned, DP isn't happy and making me dread the whole thing. Not sure we'll still be together when the times comes tbh. We have a 10 year old DD and I'm 34.

FuzzyOwl · 23/05/2016 08:14

Sorry to hear that Enough and I hope your DP comes round.

Blueskygirl30 · 23/05/2016 11:09

Northern good luck today, I hope you don't have to wait too far into the day for your scan!

Enough sorry to hear your DP is being like that, I hope he comes around to it soon and gives you more supoort.

obsessedlex · 23/05/2016 11:50

Good luck Northern - we are due date twins - I have my scan on Friday and am petrified too, until this bubba is I my arms I just don't think I'll relax and enjoy it. And the fact that I'm in agony with sacroiliac joint paint (self diagnosed from diagrams online) is not making me enjoy this "honeymoon" trimester one bit!!

SchnitzelvonKrummsverylowtum · 23/05/2016 14:43

Northern hope it went well today.

Blueskygirl30 · 23/05/2016 14:50

Does anyone else feel like they need to pee all the time? I'll go out for a walk and after 15 minutes feel like I'm bursting. Don't know if it's normal or potential UTI territory?? Blush

Alice1209 · 23/05/2016 16:50

@blueskygirl30 I've been feeling the exact same for the last week and I have been worrying it is an infection - hope not!

Alice1209 · 23/05/2016 16:56

I have MW appointments at a hospital near me and scans at a different hospital a bit further away (where I will also give birth) have my second scan on the 7th of June to find out any problems/gender. I have received another letter in the post last week about going to the scan hospital again on 21st of June and a midwife has been named. Wondering if this is to meet the MW who will be with me during labour or if this is a further scan?!

Afreshstartplease · 23/05/2016 17:29

I've never met the midwife who delivered my babies before hand, it's kind of a case of who ever is working!

FuzzyOwl · 23/05/2016 19:18

Me too Bluesky. I went to the loo earlier, washed my hands and needed to go again before I even left the bathroom. So annoying and despite being really thirsty I am trying to limit what I drink now.

I've just got back from florida and after much research used 50% deet the whole time, and only got 1 bite and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a mosi bite as they always itch me like crazy but this didn't at all.
We hummed and hahed over going but in the end decided we would go as long as deet wasn't being locally transmitted in that area and would review if that changed, which luckily it didn't and still isn't being locally transmitted there. It is worrying but after reading lots of stats I realised I was taking more of a risk everytime I got in the car with the risk of a crash then I was going away and risking zika as the numbers would be so small even if it did arrive in florida while I was there. I would imagine europe is the same.

Northernlight22 · 23/05/2016 21:45

Good news for me - scan went well and we're expecting a baby boy 💙

Now to relax!
