I've got my midwife appointment this morning, really hope she listens for heartbeats!

fish88 · 20/04/2016 07:53

I've got my 16 week midwife appointment this morning as well. Last time round with the same midwife she did listen to the heartbeat at this appointment but I am only just 16 weeks today so might be a bit early.

Alwaysinahurrynow · 20/04/2016 08:28

I think it just depends on the individual midwife whether they look for heartbeat at 16 weeks or not. Also as someone mentioned upthread, it's not always easy to get and they don't want to concern you unnecessarily. On weight, I asked first time round and unless they have concerns (presume low or high BMI) before pregnancy, they don't bother weighing you. A bonus for me as I'm a four stone gain each time (lost it both times) so far. My asp ointment is today too, I was going to ask for her to try to hear the heartbeat, knowing there's a risk she won't find it but that probably is just timing and not to do with the baby. I found all midwife appointments a bit underwhelming to be honest. The only one I didn't was at 38 weeks when my mum came too and the midwife showed her how to feel the baby and hear the heartbeat. Her face was priceless...little did she or the midwife know the baby was about to make an appearance 12 hours later!

missybct · 20/04/2016 10:46

I had urine tested and blood pressure taken at 16 week - no weight (despite having high BMI) or bloods. I'm O neg, which I've never known until now! I did have a heartbeat check but had I not urged the MW to move the doppler she wouldn't have found it as she was looking right down on my pubic bone area.

I've gained about 6-7lbs so far - but lost weight over the past 2 weeks somehow.

Oh! Forgot to say - we found out we're having a boy at the weekend too Grin

SchnitzelvonKrummsverylowtum · 20/04/2016 10:49

Congrats missy!

Tomkat79 · 20/04/2016 11:02

I'm just so undecided crazy what the best thing is to do. I had one super quick easy vaginal birth in 06, then failed induction resulting in csection in 2014. I just want this one here safely but part of me longs to deliver as naturally as possible again as the section recovery was horrendous, and that was without a toddler!

BadlyWrittenPoem · 20/04/2016 11:03

Apart from at booking and at hospital admissions I've only been weighed once in pregnancy and I've had consultant care for low booking BMI and hyperemesis.

CharlotteAmber · 20/04/2016 11:07

Hi everyone

I hope you're all feeling ok.

I'm 13 weeks pregnant with my first baby, which is due on the 22nd October. We had our 1st scan last week, which was absolutely amazing.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you (and understanding what all the abbreviations mean!)

Charlotte

MeDownSouth · 20/04/2016 12:47

Congrats missy! And welcome Charlotte!

BadlyWrittenPoem · 20/04/2016 13:01

Tomkat if it was failed induction and you have a previous vaginal birth then unless there are additional issues I'd have thought you'd be considered a good candidate for vbac. I think if I was in your shoes the reason for the previous induction would be a key factor in the decision. I'd be asking questions about the likelihood of that cause recurring and also whether you could go for vbac while retaining the option of an ELCS instead of induction if necessary. Have you been given an appointment to go over your last birth and discuss your options?

ditsygal · 20/04/2016 13:11

welcome charlotte!
I am definitely hormonal - I went to the post office this morning, and they couldn't find my parcel and said it had been returned to sender - I actually cried on the way back to the car - I am usually so calm and level headed! anyway a nice postie delivered it to my house a couple of hours later when they realised they did have it after all!

Tomkat79 · 20/04/2016 13:22

Welcome charlotte!
badly yes failed induction was only indication for section.

They're happy to let me go to 40w before giving a ELCS, an induction prior to a vbac isn't an option, which I wouldn't go for after last time.
The doc at work just asked me how the baby is and I said ok I think! He said get on the bed and scanned me there and then lol...found out have a little boy on the way. Am in total shock as thought it was a girl!!! Shock

Figgygal · 20/04/2016 13:27

what is our boy/girl tally now? How many people know? We find out on -04th May I think it is a boy Dh thinks girl, I want another boy!!

Welcome Charlotte

clank2 · 20/04/2016 14:28

What are peoples midwives like? So far my midwife has lost my notes, meaning that if I hadn't pestered and pestered I wouldn't have been booked in. Then I had to chase my scan because she did something with the scan request, and now I am waiting again as I should be having my 16 week check, but at 15 plus 4 she still hasn't even contacted me to make an appointment. I'm now wondering if I should be making the appointment as I assumed it would be her contacting me. Its all a bit weird!

Also, is anyone else getting braxton hicks already. I am getting lots of braxton hicks when I have been walking a lot, or when Im stressed, I remember getting them early last time, but not THIS early....

BadlyWrittenPoem · 20/04/2016 16:29

Clank when I had NHS midwives I always got my next appointment when I was there. One used to tell me to book it at reception and the rest just did it in the computer themselves. I have independent midwives this time so they are great. They come to the house too which makes life easier. Smile

Gigglebert · 20/04/2016 17:14

clank my midwife has been excellent so far... Other than trying to find the heartbeat at my 16 week appointment on Mondayand failing to find it! though within half an hour I was in the hospital having a scan to check all is ok and she set that up for me so really can't complain! She called me today to say she was glad all was ok and to give me my next appointment...

Hope that everyone with appointments today damaged to hear the heartbeat, it was a terrifying drive to the hospital to check baby was ok on Monday! (Though lovely to get another peek with my 2yr old once I knew it was all fine)

fish88 · 20/04/2016 17:25

Midwife found the heartbeat today at my 16 week appointment. I wasn't too nervous in the run up though because I've been feeling quite a lot of movement this last week.

Figgygal · 20/04/2016 18:02

20 week scan date has come through 12th May at midday poor dh going to have to try get out of work. We off to see family on 13th reason I booked a gender scan as thought wouldn't have had nhs scan before we went and need to tell ds about baby before we go now debating whether to cancel gender scan. At least going gives us 2 chances to tell gender which the hospital won't go out of their way to determine though if it's anything like ds you could see boy bits a mile off.

My midwifes been fine need to chase dr surgery about the potential UTI as yes want to avoid consultants and 5 months of meds.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 20/04/2016 18:58

Figgy, I think in your shoes I'd keep the private gender scan because if you didn't find out at the NHS scan you wouldn't have time for a private one before you go away. With the NHS one its just if they can tell and since it's not medically important they don't spend much time. We found out the gender with DD1 and the ultrasonographer told us she was "70% certain" she was a girl which probably is lower than the level of certainty you need for telling your son. With the private one that is the purpose of the scan and from what I've heard if they really can't tell due to baby's position they'll rebook so you would still be able to find out.

Afreshstartplease · 20/04/2016 19:48

When I had my private gender scan last time the lady said she would bet her house on dd being a dd!

pod100 · 20/04/2016 20:15

clank - my midwife has also made all my follow up appointments while I've been there. I've been given choices of dates and times to suit too.

tomkat - that's great about an impromptu scan!

Carlsberg84 · 20/04/2016 22:14

Clank-I've had loads of Braxton Hicks too...I thought it was a bit early but midwife said it happens, I had them constantly with ds2
Midwife didn't listen for heartbeats but I didn't ask cause I am still only 14+6 so it is quite early, my sister is a midwife so might see if she can find them lol!
Welcome Charlotte Smile

IrisPurple1 · 21/04/2016 07:40

Hi ladies,

I disappeared for a while as I wanted to get my 12w scan and screening results out of the way, but now I'm back, after having caught up on 10 pages, and very happy to read of everyone's good news! Good for me too as I've been brought forward a week so I'm now 14w due 17 Oct.

I have an antenatal appointment at 16w on 3 May. I don't have a separate MW appt so assume it's the same thing. Not been told much about it so I'm going with an open mind. Has anyone else got ante natal coming up? I'm both fizzing with excitement and terrified - I'm desperate to make friends with other mums so our child has other kids to grow up with. I have lots of friends but either no kids or older kids. My husband is also coming along.

How have you been finding pregnancy yoga? I'm booked in for 2 May. Had to stop normal yoga now as there's so much I can't do.

How are people's mood / energy? I tend to wake about 6, bolt upright, then have my one caffeinated drink of the day after which I am full of beans and in an excellent highly positive mood. It's downhill from there though, getting more and more irritated and negative for no real reason.

If they can't tell gender at 20w scan is there any other chance to find out other than going private?

So glad to be back and able to plan my pregnancy at last! GrinGrin

Carlsberg84 · 21/04/2016 07:55

Hi Iris, I have antenatal appointments too cause I'm expecting twins, my midwife said to ring her if I wanted to speak to a midwife and to arrange a 31 week home visit to discuss feeding etc. but aside from that there was no point cause they'd just be doing the same as the antenatal appointments. Unless you're having extra scans for any reason then the 20 week scan is the only opportunity...gender scans don't tend to be that expensive though if you book them privately...mine is going to be £45

BlueberryMuffin85 · 21/04/2016 08:25

Hi Iris
I am so far really enjoying preg yoga it's obviously nothing like the yoga I'm used to but it's great for stretching and relaxing and we have a long yoga nidra session at the end which means I always get a great night sleep that night i go. All the other mums to be there are a lot further on so I'm patiently waiting for others to join similar to me so I can also make some mummy friends!
I am getting really impatient to have the results back from the combined test they said two weeks and it will be two weeks this Friday...I'm sure I'll get the letter early next week it's just we are going away on holiday the week after and I want to go away reassured I've had all my results back. No phone call though so presuming all ok. As we are going on hols I have my 16wk midwife apt booked in a week early at 15wk I'm unsure if she will try and listen for heartbeat as maybe that's too early.
I am sleeping slightly better but like you loose my energy throughout the day and by time I get home from work just want to go to bed! Think I've been getting a bit of round ligament pain as everything starts to grow and stretch!
