Daisybump - I've got my 20wk scan on 31st so just a couple more weeks to wait. I really want to find out what sex - plus its always reassuring to see the little blighter on screen... Last time the radiographer said she'd never seen a baby moving its mouth so much during a scan... oh gawd!!!

westcoaster · 17/01/2007 14:00

On the subject of agreeing names for new baby, you could do what my SIL did - wait until you're in the throes of labour and then beg tearfully for the name you want. With any luck, dh/dp will be so guilty that he'll agree to whatever you ask....

Daisybump · 17/01/2007 14:06

Westcoaster...I'm also an expat Scot, but I'm in Yorkshire. Was an east coast girl before and now in Leeds, so missing the sea big time. I've got about the same age gap as well as my DS is nearly 5. It's all a bit of a culture shock after so long (and I'm nearly 39 so not the spring chicken I once was ). How does it work getting jobs when you are pg? I know its against the law to discriminate, but if you look obviously pg, will prospective employers be put off? The reason I ask is that I hate my job, but thought I'd better hold off till during/after mat leave to look around for something else (start mat leave on 5 May...15 weeks and counting!!)

Daisybump · 17/01/2007 14:07

LOL at getting your own way re names Westcoaster. If its a girl I'll give it a try.

marylou23 · 17/01/2007 14:14

I think spread/layers of fat are perfectly valid as a bump! I've always carried any extra weight on my stomach, so am quite enjoying being able to have it protrude without feeling like I have to cover it up! Anyone else feeling movements yet? I'm getting quite a lot of tapping now - very reassuring but also quite freaky. Brings back visions of Alien...

trace2 · 17/01/2007 14:53

hi and welome westcoaster !

Daisybump am in yorkshire too not to far from you,

and talk about age gaps what about mine dd is 22years ds 21 years, then came jack who is 5 in june.

i phone the pleace where they wash nappies here for you, they give you 24 nappies and bucket and linners for one off payment of £15 then they collect twice a week for dirty nappies and bring clean ones all for £7.50 a week, me my self dont think thats too bad

hollyandalice · 17/01/2007 15:45

On the subject of bumps I have a smallish one. I'm at that horrid inbetween stage- my normal clothes are a bit tight and maternity clothes are a bit big (18+3 now)! Wasn't in maternity clothes with dd til 24 weeks, I see this as a bad omen (she was 8 11, that is plenty big enough). Going on hol tomorrow to Dubai and have nothing to wear! Hellish!! I'll just have to wear maternity clothes and look like a frump!

Congrats to all who know the sex, I have to wait til 30th- not too long to go.

I'll never get my own way with names. I like Lydia and Harry, but dp is quite set on Bella for a girl. We never argue, ever, but I can see this becoming a bit heated!

trace2 · 17/01/2007 15:54

bump wise i have not much on;y my fat lol

i dont know sex yet my scan is 29th carnt wait

holly Dubai wish it was me have a great time

hollyandalice · 17/01/2007 15:55

Everyone have a look at this thread on the potty training bit. It's called changing a nappy with your feet or something. It's really amazing!

hollyandalice · 17/01/2007 15:56

Thanks Trace2. It's only for 4 days (Dp won it through work), but it should be nice and relaxing. Hopefully I won't miss dd too much!!

trace2 · 17/01/2007 16:01

my friends go all the time they love it there, and very plush

doggus · 17/01/2007 17:54

Hi hollyandalice - have fun in Dubai - I went there a few years ago at this time of year and it was HOT. Also take a cardie or something as the malls are viciously airconditioned. You lucky thing - we're getting snow here from the weekend

Seansgirl · 17/01/2007 18:42

Very very H&A but have a great time and don't think of us in the wet miserable grey uk.... fill us all in when you get back.

Does anyone else have 'pushing' under ribs that makes you sit up straight, cant be the baby up there yet must be everything else being pushed up!

Twiga · 17/01/2007 20:56

Evening all, hope everyone's keeping well today . Would agree with the main sentiment expressed on the bf/nappy front; go with instincts, do what makes you/baby happy and fits what's needed, and don't take too much flak from hv's etc. Those worried about effect of bf on time with older children, could you use this as story time, watch a special dvd together, sit with them while they draw etc as a way of being able to try the bf but still feel like giving attention to other child? From what I've heard from friends in this situation, learning to bf on the move, using sling or just doing things one handed sems to happen out of necessity - my co-ordination isn't great so hoping my then 21 month old might like some quiet sit down time - who am I trying to kid ?!

H&A - at your 4 days away. How about investing n some nice sarongs to wear whilst there - nice light cotton for the heat and fully adjustable to growing bump?

Westcoater - welcome to the thread, and congratulations.

Magicgenie - looks like we share a due date - 24th? I've found this baby has been much quieter too - dd was giving me good strong kicks from 14 and a half weeks, this one is barely there most of the time and def nothing hefty yet.

Strawberri - go for it on driving front! Nice to know it's not just me that's left it this late. I used to be terrified of driving and hated every moment of the first lot of lessons I took a couple of years back. This time round I've got a lady instructor who I get on great with and has been fab at getting me over my nerves. Have booked my practical test for the 3rd Feb - eek! Best advice I can give is don't be afraid to try/ change diff instructors if the one you start off with doesn't feel right/can't put you at ease. Right instructor has made massive diff to me and I realised a couple of weeks ago that I actually enjoy driving now and feel very positive about up-coming test.

Marylou23 - I think the measuring bumps thing would be good for a laugh - we could do it using squares of toilet roll, that way not talking in cm/inches and may spare some ! We could set targets like 20wks, 25wks, 30 wks and so on, and just all post as we hit those milestones?! Or when we hit the next week of our pgs, just post the week number and size ie 18 wks, 20 squares, at the end of that post.

The gender thing is weird, my ante-natal group was about 22 of us and out of that only 3 of us had girls. There is always an overall gender balance in population of about 48% men 52% women (fig might be slightly out but pretty much 50/50) so I guess each area somehow balances out to whats needed - mother nature and all that.

sputnik · 18/01/2007 10:07

Hi everyone. Everything is fine after my amnio but have been having a hell of a time with DD, she has a streptococcus infection and has been really poorly. I am quite worried as I've never seen her so ill, but she's been on antibiotics since yesterday so hopefully we should see some improvement soon. She's sleeping now so got to catch up with you lot.

Meanwhile I've been trying to get my head round having a boy and mentally going through DD's old clothes thinking what I can and can't recycle. Luckily I have quite a lot of neutral stuff as I'm not a fan of pastel pink and frills.

Annobal, I'm about an hour away from Rome. Being in Italy has it's plus side, the food and climate being no.1 obviously, and I live in a beautiful area. However things are much less organised here and there are no things like mother and baby groups, music, baby swimming etc. which would be really nice to have, at least there isn't in the rural area where I live. People here all live near family and dump their babies with the grandparents, I don't have that option and ended up quite isolated for the first year with DD. Also no Ceebeebies!

Daisybump · 18/01/2007 14:03

after typing out quite a long post, the website froze...so nothing. Don't you just hate that.
Anyway...Hollyand Alice...look in mothercare. I got some wrapover tops that are ruched up the sides...either bump fills ruches or ruches cover not quite pg belly. Very flattering. they have them in short sleeves too, so i'll def be getting some for the warmer months.
Trace 2...and I though a gap of 5 years would be a culture shock, can't imagine 16!! At least you don't have to worry about babysitters!
Sputnik...I hope you've got your feet up for the next few ddays...any excuse!

Finally got my appetite back, even for fish! Been eating like a horse for the last few days so no doubt all the missing pounds (only put on six so far and I'm nearly 20wks) will now start to pile on. Of course it could just be comfort eating from all the stress....DH and I not speaking at all now, and he slept on the sofa last night. Not a good situation and each time we try to 'talk things through' we end up at each others throats . He starts a new job in two weeks and he'll be away Monday to Friday, so things looking decidedly ropey in our house. Feeling a bit .

mytwocents · 18/01/2007 14:15

have changed my name- from STRAWBERRI as many other strwaberri/y s around it seems......

Daisybump, sorry hun,it's horrid to sleep separate i know, sometimes we have to spend 24 hours apart to see things clearly.....

I saw my midwife today and I'm aneamic ! I'm thrilled obviously Have to take vile iron supplement three times a day for two months, makes you constipated as well, great like i need any help there! tmi, sorry.

Not felt anything yet, booby fairy keeps coming back in the night though.....

Juicylucytoo · 18/01/2007 14:36

Daisybump - how horrible sleeping apart and not being able to clear the air. Hope you can sort it out soon. Hormones + stubborn DH's = more stress than you need. Poor you.

Think I might actually be starting to feel movement. No defo kicks yet, but defo tummy rumblings. I'm already 21 weeks, but baby has yet to make it's presence known.

auntymandy · 18/01/2007 17:28

just popping in to say hi! too tired to read but dont want leaving behind.
not een well. poor baby must be dizzy all the coughing I have done!!!!

Seansgirl · 18/01/2007 18:39

Sputnik poor you and DD hope she is feeling better tomorrow its horrible when they are ill you make yourself sick with all the worry

Daisy sorry to hear about you and DH its horrible when you fall out normally but worse when hormonally charged too, poor you hope it sorts out 'tween you two.

Mytwocents wish that booby fairy would spread a little over here too! sorry to here about the anemia do you have to have another test after two months?

Auntymandy - can sympathise on the cough still hacking (mainly at night keeping both me and DH awake) really pulls your tummy muscles doesnt it? I went to GP today to check if chest infection (under DHs orders as he is fed up with being woken) which apparently it isnt! She looked at me like I was barmy when said poor baby getting shaken by my constant coughing...

Having 'fat' day today and feel distinctly
un-glamourous nothing fits properly maternity or otherwise am going shopping in Birmingham on Monday to try and get some 'nice' clothes. Still not sure if can feel movement or not tho could have sworn had kicks towards my back last night, but suppose it could have been DH trying to sleep....

annobal · 18/01/2007 20:32

Sputnik, sorry about your poor, sick DD.

Daisybump I hope you get things sorted out soon - poor you

Mytwocents - try floradix and dried apricots - not available on NHS but much better and natural sources of iron - won't make you constipated!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

I love this time of evening - Ds' in bed and fast asleep, DH cooking dinner and I can put my feet up with a nice glass of ..... water

Have a good evening all.

NattyThomasandBump · 18/01/2007 22:20

hi guys had a really shit week so havent really been in the mood for posting

due to incompetant medical staff here ive only jusy had first bloods/urine done and got the results early this week. it seems i have something called group b strep. no leaflet or explaination with it just the results. so looked it up on the internet and it looks like i have to be on a antibiotic drip during labour and may not be able to have water birth. great, just what i need. gone from feeling a little scared about impending birth to utterly terrified. anyone know anything about what this is? all i can get up is that its not an STD, which is not terribly helpful.

cheers guys

N&T&B

westcoaster · 19/01/2007 09:52

N&T&B - I think there was something on TV about Strep affecting pregnancy recently. My pg head isn't helping but I think it might have been GMTV?? I think it's one of those bacteria that we all have on/in us but only causes problems in some instances. Definitely not an STD! From what I saw, it's only a problem if you weren't aware you had it during labour.
Have you tried US medical sites - they always seem to have more detailed info..

westcoaster · 19/01/2007 10:02

N&T&B - this page might be of help? - a couple of links at the bottom of it too. www.aims.org.uk/Journal/Vol12No3/gbs.htm

sputnik · 19/01/2007 10:13

Happy to report that DD is much improved, what a relief. She's even playing on her own now, albeit with loud annoying toy keyboard, I don't mind, it's a relief. Hopefully she can get back to nursery on monday.

N&T&B, sorry to hear about this strep B thing, don't know anything about it, maybe you could post a question in the health section, someone's bound to something on here.

Well, that didn't last long, DD is hassling me to play with her glitter glue. Check back later.
