April 2016 babies - 20-week scans, growing bumps and little kicks!

Hi all,

I've started a new thread to take us up to the third trimester.

Hope you are all feeling well. I feel like my bump is a little small and I'm not feeling lots of movement (but this may be due to an anterior placenta). Got my 20-week scan tomorrow so not long to wait to see if everything's ok - it's actually nearly 22 weeks though as baby really wasn't playing ball when we went last week and was hiding with its back to the scanner.

Getting excited that I'm halfway there though...

Yes there's a Facebook group. If you send me - or anyone else on it - a message on here with your real name, we can add you!

Work this week has not been nearly as bad as I was expecting. Yes, I'm stiff and sore, but I'd be stiff and sore at home, so it's no different. I'll manage to make it to the end of Feb, which would give me 4 weeks before the baby arrives. Would like more time, but equally I don't want to let work down and want to see projects I've started through to the end.

Not able to walk very far at all, but pleased I'm still managing to train with my PT once a week. Can't manage any cardio and SPD gets in the way of a lot of leg stuff, but managing strength/machine based training. Will just take it each week as it comes and see how long I can keep it up.

My new pillow arrived. Think it's called a Dreamgenii. Had one last time and it was great, but with SPD it's no use at all! My sleeping isn't great just now, but I'm not too frazzled.

Really feel for those who have to stand at work all day! There is no way I'd manage. Luckily, I have a big swivel, reclining chair so I spend a lot of the time with my feet up and only walk around when I have to and I try to avoid the stairs.

I've been hearing a lot about Strep B in the media recently. Don't know much about it, but I cannot understand why we are not tested routinely for this in the UK?

pingoose · 10/01/2016 05:37

Back to work tomorrow for me :( Also moving house this week, so it's very full on, but at least I'll finally have a room for all the baby stuff we've started buying!
I'm planning on working until 38 weeks, but I have some annual leave I need to use before I go so will be doing about 2 months of 3 or 4 day weeks, which should hopefully be ok. I'm just in an office, and can easily do a bit less work if I'm not feeling up to it.

crumblybiscuits · 11/01/2016 07:29

Good luck back at work today pingoose

MazzleDazzle · 11/01/2016 10:16

House moves are a lot of work. Hope You've got plenty of help and that it goes well.

I've vowed never to move again!

waxweasel · 11/01/2016 20:22

Mazzle I agree on the strep B. I just don't see why it isn't routinely tested for on the NHS. I've read that it's something to do with the fact it can come and go, so a positive test one day could be neg the next. But that doesn't seem insurmountable, and clearly isn't an issue for all the other developed countries that have routine strep B testing. I suspect the real reason is cost. I'm considering paying the £35 to do it privately.

I'm absolutely falling apart today. DD just doesn't let me sleep. 2 hours sleep last night (not even in one block!!!) then a mad day at work, now sat here on the bloody floor with my hips feeling like they're dislocating, trying and failing to get DD to sleep as she had a sodding nap at nursery so is likely to dick about until at least 10. I've dealt with at least 4 tantrums since pick up at 5.30. I'm shattered, hungry, thirsty and just want to cry. I know it sounds awful, but I'm dreading the next two days at home with DD - I love her to pieces, she's my little bestie and is just amazing, but I'm so bloody tired.

MazzleDazzle · 11/01/2016 20:56

Agreed wax. Surely testing for Strep B should be top of the list? It kills babies and it's preventable. Hopefully your daughter takes it easy on you for he next couple of days! Can you crank up the heating and watch telly with her? I've done that when pregnant to get at least a bit of a break. Granted, my eldest used to poke me in the eye and say 'No sleeping mummy!' when she was a toddler, so it didn't always work!

We've 2 flights of stairs in our house and my kids sleep on the top floor. Putting them to bed every night (my DH is away) is becoming such a chore, but tonight they agreed stories and goodnight kisses in my room (first floor) and they went upstairs themselves Grin. My eldest tucked her little sister in, then tucked herself in. For anyone who lives in an upper story flat with no lift, you have my sympathy!

Frankie72 · 11/01/2016 21:41

Place marking so this thread stays in my list! I will catch up when can't sleep tonight Sad

Any one else struggling with non wired bras?! I can't find one that comfactable all day... Wired seem to be so much better but I know I shouldn't be wearing it x

5madthings · 11/01/2016 21:49

frankie under wired bras are fine in pregnancy and when bfeeding as long as they fit properly. I am wearing underwired ones, always do in pregnancy no way these 30gg/h boobs can be properly supported without wires! Just make sure wire fits nicely under boob, not pressing into breast tissue etc and you are good to go!

emmac3616 · 11/01/2016 22:09

Hi ladies,
rejoining this thread... Due 7th April so nearly 28wks now and feeling HUGE second time round. Way more uncomfortable than with DS... Plus chasing after DS is an added challenge!
Am having the full GTT on Friday and have no idea how I'm going to starve myself until 11am! I am usually a gym and porridge pre-8am girl... Roll on April!
Ps. Got Group B Strep as am on a growth study and feel very relieved for having been tested, agree it should be covered but as its not I'd definitely recommend paying £35 for the peace of mind.

Want2bSupermum · 11/01/2016 22:22

Mazzel The GBS Test is done as routine here in the US. When I was pregnant with my first my obn was shocked to her core that it isn't offered as standard in the UK and told me that if I was going to move that it was one test that I should pay to have done privately. I think it was GBP40 to have it done. It takes 2 seconds to take the sample and if it comes back positive they give you an IV of antibiotics. I was on a thread about the GBS test and there was a poster there who wasn't tested and had it. Her baby was gravely ill and if they did make it through, there are serious long term health consequences for that baby/child.

The test is also done as standard in Denmark, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, HK, KL, Singapore, Holland, Czech, Poland and Germany (where my friends have delivered) and it is shocking it isn't performed in the UK.

wax On nights like that I let the kids fall asleep to sesame street on youtube. There is a song list of song associate with sleep that I have them watch on my phone. Big hug for you - it is awful when they don't let you sleep.

Want2bSupermum · 11/01/2016 22:24

Frankie I am huge chested and need underwire. I like the ones by Anita. Not cheap but I got them on sale and make do with 2.

MazzleDazzle · 11/01/2016 23:30

My friend said that if you ask for the Strep B test here, they can't refuse. I just find it bizarre that all of those countries offer it and we don't, yet our Government is happy to invest in testing for conditions which aren't life threatening Confused.

Oopsnumber3 · 12/01/2016 06:48

Incidentally on the bra chat, if your cup size hasn't altered but your back size is getting too tight as your ribs expand outwards, get yourself some bra extenders. They are only about £5-7 for a pack on Amazon and you'll save yourself a bundle on new bras.

Oopsnumber3 · 12/01/2016 06:55

Genius.

crumblybiscuits · 12/01/2016 07:03

After a crap start to the week at work where they removed my only seat I am officially pushing mat leave forward to Feb. Words can't explain how excited I am Grin counting down the weeks. DP doesn't want me going back so I can still take the whole year off if wanted from baby's birth too.

Bra-wise I'm also a 32G/H in pregnancy and haven't bothered with non-underwires. Need much more support than that!

dizzylemon · 12/01/2016 09:25

I have much admiration for anyone who is looking after young children whilst pregnant - I find just being around my friends kids exhausting at the moment!

Strep B varies between NHS authorities I believe - I've been tested and think I might get tested again? All clear thank goodness!

emmac we have the same due date :D This is my first and a few people have said I'm quite small. Feeling cumbersome though so I can't agree with those people. I seem to lose my balance just by standing up...

I used back extenders from fairly early on (10 weeks maybe?) and they are very useful but I've had to give in and buy a few new bras Currently at a 36/38F but wearing mostly wireless as I find wired too uncomfortable at the moment. I think you can get softer wires though so I may look into that.

I'm a little pensive at the moment as I my little wriggler was a bit quiet yesterday evening and is a being fairly docile today as well. She has moved a bit - my hubby 'had a word with his daughter' last night and she gave a bit of a wriggle and kick, and as I say I've felt a few movements this morning but not quite as much as before? It's tricky to judge sometimes as I have an anterior placenta so I don't always feel her unless my hand is on my tummy. I've been told that even developing babies have quiet days but wonder how long I should leave it before flagging it up as an issue. On typing this she's had a bit of a bop, but they don't seem quite as strong? Hmm

5madthings · 12/01/2016 09:38

dizzy it is probably just s combination if babies position and your anterior placenta but if movements are noticeably different or reduced then just get checked out, honestly that's what the midwives are there for. Give them a ring and they can arrange to see you or for you to go for monitoring. Even if it's just to put your mind at rest it's always best to get checked out. Xxxx

dizzylemon · 12/01/2016 14:24

5madthings tbf this is the sort of answer I'd give other people. I think my only hesitation is that I do have a midwife appointment on Thursday but I think I will give them a ring in a bit to see what they say.

5madthings · 12/01/2016 14:38

Hope midwife is helpful.

I feel bloody awful all of a sudden, try cramping, mainly under my ribs and all sorts of horrid gurgling noises, feeling nauseous as well, a bug maybe? I have called in favour and got friend to pick up little two madthings from school.
At first I thought I had just pulled something as had a busy day doing house stuff, changing bedsheets, hoovering etc but it's Def more of a digestive system issue I think.. And dh is at work til late and I stil need to remake the beds, ugh.

ComeLuckyApril · 12/01/2016 17:29

Oh, that sounds unpleasant, hope you feel better soon!

I feel exhausted, had to leave work within a couple of hours due to being so tired and sick and dizzy. Had some bloods taken to check iron levels etc at midwife appointment. I'm as tired as I was in the early weeks!

Ilovepercypigs3 · 12/01/2016 18:22

I'm so glad it's not just me back at the tired stage. I wasn't working today so woke up at 8, got out of bed at 10, had a bath and then ended up back in bed napping from 11.30-12.15!!
So ridiculous. Have also been really sad but can't work out why, maybe a hormone resurge. Can't believe we have so long left of this...

brookeberry · 13/01/2016 00:07

I'm back at the tired stage too. I'm 26 + 4 and for the past couple of days I'm having to nap for 2 hours after work!

dizzy I got a little worried after having a couple of quieter days of movement. I called Maternity Assessment and they said to drink cold water and lie on my left side for two hours, and there he was bopping away. I had my midwife appt today and all is fine. They are very reassuring when you call.

waxweasel · 13/01/2016 15:44

dizzy hope the baby is kicking away again now and you've had some reassurance. It's so hard to judge, especially with an anterior placenta.

5madthings sorry you're feeling rough - no idea how you manage it with so many other kids to look after! You're a total trouper.

crumbly I'm furious for you that they took away your seat in work! How bloody cruel. Thank god you managed to move your mat leave forward.

Dont worry, I'm just venting Sad I know I'll be fine once I have had some sleep and will be ashamed of how ridiculous I'm being. Just dont want anyone to worry.
