Would anyone recommend a 2nd hand cot?

Seen a couple on Gumtree locally but DP is being funny saying its weird to have a 2nd hand one, whereas I'm thinking I'd rather have more money when baby comes haha!

TheMshipIsBack · 03/11/2015 12:50

Hospital bags? Buying stuff? Grin

Had my 22 week routine midwife appointment today, all is well but I will be offered growth scans later (forget which weeks) due to higher risk for GD.

maybebabybee · 03/11/2015 12:58

Q I don't see why it's weird to have a second hand cot, as long as you buy the mattress new?

I will probably be buying a second hand cot myself :) When my Dsis had her first pretty much everything she bought was second hand - it's lasted my nephew well!

MyNameIsSuz · 03/11/2015 13:16

Second hand cot not weird at all! But definitely get a new mattress.

I'm hoping to go to the midwife unit which is about a five minute walk from home, but I can't imagine walking there in labour! They usually tell you to stay at home until quite far along, last time I got to the hospital at 8cm dilated! I could barely walk to the car, or put presentable clothes on, I can't imagine walking through town in that state! And past people, people with eyes!!!

Wow, you all sound super-prepared. Brilliant tips for hospital bags though. I'm going for a home birth so beautiful would be very keen indeed to hear homebirth tips...

If anyone is local to Brighton, there's an NCT sale on Sat 14th November.

Rosieblossom123 · 03/11/2015 13:27

Hi girls, just came back from holiday and feels like I've been off here for a year haha Thread #6 already!! Shock

So happy starting feeling my baby girl moving such an amazing feeling seeing my belly move :)

I've got loads to catch up on we're such a chatty bunch Grin

BeautifulLiar · 03/11/2015 13:36

Nice to see you back Rosie! Did you have a good time?

DH is 25 today!! He's such a baby haha. He's working away though as usual. DD2 is coping well with her chickenpox - oh God I wish i could squeeze her puss-filled spots, they look amazing Blush she did cry loads in the night though, not like her at all.

Flen - I definitely think that being at home is a pain relief in itself. Feel free to ask me anything - I've had two home births, one with baby arriving before the midwife!

Rosieblossom123 · 03/11/2015 13:52

Thanks Beautiful it was lovely thank you, can't believe this time last week I was sunbathing and not I'm stuck at work Sad

Flen · 03/11/2015 13:54

beautiful thank you! At the moment I am starting to plan what I need to have at home, specifically wondering about a birth pool and also about getting a doula?! What did you have to hand?

TriJo · 03/11/2015 14:23

Maybebabybee I'm at the Whittington in Archway. I'm just down the hill from it.

TriJo · 03/11/2015 14:28

DH in absolute bits with wisdom teeth at the moment (he's 31, just never got them through when he was younger), have warned him that he now has to have plenty of sympathy for the little one when he starts getting teeth!

Apparently I'm blooming according to the health and safety lady at work. Not sure if compliment or I'm getting fat!

BeautifulLiar · 03/11/2015 14:43

See I'm weird and never had a birth pool. They ran a bath for me in hospital with my first baby and as soon as I got in the water the contractions became excruciating. Plus I always wonder if the birth pool/equipment would just get in the way afterwards, and if it'd just be an extra stress having to return it or whatever.

But I did have some giant inco pads, and an Argos value shower curtain. Also bucket/box is good for the placenta. And they like you to have a desk lamp type thing so they can check your fadge for tears.

Tea/coffee/biscuits for midwives. Paracetamol. These are all things I forgot. DH didn't drive back then and ran a mile and a half to get a packet of painkillers! Oops.

Old towels are good to catch and wrap baby. I just used our current towels and then bought lovely new ones.

Trinpy · 03/11/2015 14:48

Yay for homebirths! I did the same as Beautiful and packed a hospital bag anyway in case I had to be transferred. I wasn't in the end, but it was really useful having everything the baby and needed all in one place.

BeautifulLiar · 03/11/2015 14:58

Good minds think alike Trinpy Wink bloody hope I'm not transferred as three DC will be at home!

dobbythedoggy · 03/11/2015 15:13

Back from second attempt at scan, was able to convince bump to move this time so everything ticked off and looking good. Placenta is slightly low lying, so need to check again later on to see if it's moved up enough to attempt a natural birth all else being well.

q I couldn't see any issue with a second had cot with a new matress. I'd probably want to look at it as some can look terrable if they have been chewed on, had stickers stuck on them or been bashed around. But dd's old cot bed still looks like new. It was a present from my parents. If dh can't be convinced on second hand, online4baby do some good deals on 'old' moddles of cots, dd's was a bundle with cotbed, sprung matress and cot top changer.

trjo sympathy for your dh, wisdom tooth pain is horriable. I've always had loads of sympathy for dd because of getting it occationally. Found the baby teething powders offered a bit of relief. Also if he doesn't mind the taste of vanilla socking a cotton wool bud in vanilla extract and biting on it is amazing at numbing the gum. Last time mine acted up I was still breast feeding dd so couldn't get any codine prescribed!

Depending on how things work out we might end up in taxi to the hospital. Although as I need to go in early for monitoring if I'm able to try for a vbac we might consider the bus (almost door to door and runs every 20 mintues and quicker than a car when there's traffic thanks to the bus lanes), depending on avalablity of family with cars and time of day. Already know the taxi driver who lives opposite will take us any time of day or night and is well prepared for labouring women! He pointed it out as soon as I was noticably pregnant and showed me all his suplies.

marmitemofo · 03/11/2015 15:45

wow dobby that's a great picture! Grin

trjo also sympathy for your DH as I remember my wisdom teeth being so painful (and one was/is impacted and was really awkward in coming out, and never came out fully). My DP (nearly 31) hasn't had his wisdom teeth either and he asked the dentist about it last time he went - she told him that his age he probably wouldn't get them now, he was really miffed as made him feel old haha! didn't help she was one of those ridiculously young looking dentists fresh out of uni. I'll tell him it might not be too late and he might still have to face the pain Confused

thanks for the info on what to have for home birth beautiful! I was also wondering about having a birthing pool... with DD I tried to take a bath at the midwife unit when I first went in, and I remember being in agony in the pool - but I think because she was back to back, sitting down was just completely the wrong position for me. I'm not sure whether I'll do it this time round. My friend who was due yesterday is planning a home birth and has a birth pool so I may ask her how she found it having one at home, will let you know what she says! She whatsapp me yesterday very frustrated and tearful, it's so awful when you are sat around basically waiting for baby to come, feeling bloated and full and sick of pregnancy. I'm 22 weeks today and realised I'm just bored of being pregnant already - bored of work and just want my baby now! 18 weeks (ish) to go!

lol beautiful I just googled 'inco pads' as wasn't sure what they were... and I'm at work! may need to clear my browsing history haha.

Flen · 03/11/2015 16:01

beautiful so impressed with your lack of faff! It gives me faith. trinpy do you have any home birth tips?

marmite would be interested to hear your friend's birthing pool feedback too. I love the idea, but it does also seem like a lot of work and maybe just isn't necessary.

dobby yay for a good scan!

hayleycookie · 03/11/2015 16:26

I always really wanted to use the birthing pool at the hospital as I'd heard they were brilliant! I didn't get to use it last time as I was induced, but was hoping to use one this time if I can. Has anyone had any good experience with one? Wish I had the choice of a home birth like you lucky ladies!!

MyNameIsSuz · 03/11/2015 17:04

I kind of wanted a birthing pool last time, but when we got there I couldn't bear the thought of taking my tens machine off so turned them down! Might like to try it this time.

TriJo · 03/11/2015 17:09

He's back from the dentist now, on antibiotics for a few days - apparently he has an infection caused by the tooth not having enough room to come out. If things don't improve then he'll have to have it pulled. He likes vanilla so I might have to get some extract and try that and possibly use it for making cookies too

Regarding homebirths - wouldn't be my cup of tea but am hoping to use the hospital birth centre. Need to stay low risk though, fingers crossed!

BeautifulLiar · 03/11/2015 17:33

Haha thanks flen!

Hayley you've always got the choice of a home birth x

Gingerlady123 · 03/11/2015 18:18

I would love a home birth but very scared how I'll cope with the pain of labour.

Feeling guilty tonight as still taking Phenergan for morning sickness and although doctors say it's safe you should only use if benefits outweigh the risks and I'm scared I'll harm my baby, not even sure if I should be taking at 20 weeks as I have so many left over as I only take one a day as opposed to the two I could take a day. Panicking I'll harm baby and should tough it out with nothing, only thrown once today

dobbythedoggy · 03/11/2015 18:41

ginger I was on phenergon for my sickness. The advice given at my gp's surgery was that it's considered safe to take until the third trimester. I was told just to ring up to ask for a repeat prescription until that point when if I still needed meds something else would be prescribed. The only risk that their research highlighted was causing 'hyperactivity' or increased movement in the third trimester. I was told to make an appointment for 26 weeks to review.

I managed to stop taking it at around 13 weeks, when I was just being sick once a day first thing in the morning, even taking the pills. I felt that level was managable for me as I had it at that level with dd most of my pregnancy. Sickness didn't get worse when I stopped, a touch wood has now tailed off to less than once a week. I stopped on a friday night so I could feel runish over the weekend and start taking it in time for monday if I needed to.

hayleycookie · 03/11/2015 21:43

Beautiful I technically could choose a home birth, but they highly recommended I use the midwife led unit after my last birth. Safety first and all that lol Grin

IndomitabIe · 03/11/2015 22:27

marmite - glad to see I'm not the only one that's starting to get over being pregnant. I'm just starting to get uncomfortable and feel cumbersome, and I'm not even 20 weeks till tomorrow! (Serves me right for finding out at 3.5 weeks. Idiot)

I used the pool at the local MLU with DS. It was sooo much more comfortable. But I had to get out when we had to transfer (boo). I'm hoping to be able to have this one there and stay in the pool for the duration.

I'd think about a home birth if we didn't have the MLU down the road. But it's lovely there and they keep the mess!

Got to wait till next week to see if I'm even allowed to go there.
