hayley I haven't had a c-section but my sister had two - one planned with her first DS due to low lying placenta, the second emergency after unsuccessful VBAC. My sister absolutely hates hospitals, medicine, everything, so she didn't like the experience, but it was more to do with her own issues surrounding hospitals than the actual experience. Both times, I think her recovery was pretty straightforward, and with her second DS she was home from hospital pretty much the next day and seemed fine. In fact I totally forgot to ask her about it when I visited when my DN was 2 weeks old as she seemed so fine. I think there is a huge amount of variation in post c-section recovery, and it is probably more painful than post vaginal birth recovery, but in the general scheme of things is ok, and I wouldn't stress about it. It is also possible for your placenta to move and I think most do (my sister was unlucky).

beautiful I also really need to go to the dentist! I'm overdue my check up and found it really difficult to floss over the summer when morning sickness was really bad as it made me heave really badly. So kind of dreading going as my dentist always knows when I've been lax with my flossing and she always tells me off!

BeautifulLiar · 26/10/2015 15:07

Aww marmite - I'm sure she'd be sympathetic if you explained the reason?! I admitted to the dentist straightaway how naughty I'd been. Also you're doing better than me - I've never flossed in my life!! Oops...

IndomitabIe · 26/10/2015 15:24

I've never flosses either. (Should I have? Only the TV has ever said anything)

Dentist on Friday.

Me624 · 26/10/2015 16:59

I've got the dentist next week too! I do go every 6 months but I never floss, I hate it! I only have one filling (from 8 years ago) so I'm not doing too badly but I have had bleeding gums with the pregnancy so bit worried about what they might say. Looking forward to it being free though!

dobby it's really useful to have a detailed description of a c section so thanks for posting! I'm hoping as most will be to avoid one but if it happens, it happens. I was surprised to see that the stats are 1 in 4, I didn't think it would be as high as that.

QforCucumber · 26/10/2015 17:41

Oh god I'm awful - been to the dentist twice in the last 5 years, only to get wisdom teeth pulled out. Doubt I'm even registered with one anymore - probably should sort that out. I do floss, brush and listerine twice daily though.

IndomitabIe · 26/10/2015 17:54

I think I'd made it to 29 without more that one filling. Then I had DS and now I've lost count of how many I've had.

My mum warned me it would happen.

marmitemofo · 26/10/2015 19:34

I think flossing is one of those things you can either get away with not doing, or not! DP never flosses and has no issues - if I don't floss, I get bleeding gums and bad plaque build up. My teeth are quite cramped though so don't know if that's why. I didn't have any fillings till I was about 27, hadn't been to the dentist for two years and bam needed three fillings! So I go every 6 months now. I stopped flossing for a bit and needed a very minor filling last time I went, so think as I'm getting older I can't get away with poor tooth care anymore!

BeautifulLiar · 26/10/2015 19:44

You're probably right marmite! Couldn't believe it when DH went to the dentist. He hadn't been since he was a kid, he'd smoked for years and practically lived off Coke/energy drinks. He didn't need anything doing!

I've just been watching Knocked Up. Sooo funny but always makes me emotional for some reason!

IndomitabIe · 26/10/2015 19:58

I watched that the other day (have ITV put it on repeat?!). It's a terrible film in many ways, but I enjoyed it. I prefer Juno, when it comes to films about pregnancy.

Are there any others?

Me624 · 26/10/2015 20:22

I watched Juno the other night! Good film.

Sorry for the TMI ladies but for over a week now I have been suffering with very loose poos, anyone else had this? It's every day and not diarrhoea because I'm only going once a day but I suddenly get this urgent need to go and it's not pretty! I suppose I should be grateful I don't have constipation Blush

QforCucumber · 26/10/2015 20:39

Oh me how awful, sadly mine is opposite end of the spectrum -going once every like 3 days and even then it's a struggle so I'm afraid I have no advice but I feel your pain.
Love knocked up, never seen Juno - worth a watch? Spent my evening cathing up on the newest walking dead series Grin

Trinpy · 26/10/2015 21:04

Um yeah that sounds familiar me. I think its a combination of progesterone and the growing baby etc making our digestive systems go a bit funny.

I have a wedding to go to next week and i still dont have a dress! I'm going to order a load of maternity ones from asos tomorrow and hopefully one of them will be ok!

And yes flossing is important important! I started going to a new dentist last year and during my first check up he said he could tell i must floss regularly because my gums are in such good condition so it must be doing something worthwhile...

Missikat · 26/10/2015 21:18

Hayley, I had an emergency CS with DS. The immediate aftermath was a bit different to what you'd have if you had an elective due to a lie lying placenta (many do move though) as I had to have a general anaesthetic so I was really out of it for a few hours. My
midwife did get me up and out of bed and over to a chair to have a sponge wash and clothes change within probably 6 hours of surgery. I spent two nights on the ward (now only one night is standard after c sections in our hospital) with a catheter in the first night (DS was born at 6.30am). They took the catheter out the day after and I don't remember having any problems going to the loo, although the measuring it was funny! The hardest thing was not being able to sit up using your stomach muscles. It wasn't so bad in hospital as I was in a remote controlled bed which you could use to help you sit up but it was more when I got home to sit up in bed to get DS out his Moses basket for feeds etc that was hard, it took a bit of adjustment to use your arms to move from lying to sitting.

Generally I found the recovery ok. I was walking about the ward to the shower/toilet etc by the next morning, walked to the park on first day home, could bend etc fairly swiftly.

With regard to pain relief I had one of those buttons with morphine delivered intravenously for the first day then after that some other kind of pain killers plus anti inflammatory injections into my tummy. These you had to do yourself for about a week or two after delivery, it wasn't nice to do but I got used to it after a couple of times. I had stitches rather than staples which dissolved so nothing to be removed afterwards which was good. I'm hoping for a VBAC this time but equally if I do have to have another c section I won't be so worried about recovery (although it may be very different with a toddler who I can't pick up and a baby!).

Fingers crossed yours moves!

BeautifulLiar · 26/10/2015 21:36

Yeh Me I'm like that too. Touch wood I don't really get constipation...

Knocked Up is so sexist but I think even the neighbours heard me laughing! Also did anyone watch Gogglebox on Friday? God that was hilarious. Juno is good too, I forgot about Juno!

BeautifulLiar · 26/10/2015 21:40

Oh Cucumber I love Walking Dead but it hasn't been on Channel 5 for two years now :( :( I don't think it's coming back...

Missdee2014 · 26/10/2015 22:28

Any scan buddies for tomorrow? Do I need a full bladder for this one? I should know this but really can't remember.

marmitemofo · 27/10/2015 06:53

Good luck with scan today missdee! No, you don't need a full bladder - my scan info leaflet very specifically said that!

So tired this morning. DD randomly woke at 1.30am shouting, DP went in to her room and brought her into the bed we have in there but had no luck getting her to sleep. I took over around half 2, finally managed to get her back to sleep and then struggled to get her out of bed and back into her cot without waking! Then took me ages to get back to sleep. Uuuugh.

BeautifulLiar · 27/10/2015 07:32

Missdee good luck!!

Oh marmite :( how on earth do you cope with that?! You're amazing! Mine all decided to pile into bed together, and went to bed at 6:15pm... then they went downstairs at 1:45am!! I was all set to tell them off then thought fuck it, it's the holidays! No idea where they are now though, it's very quiet...

MyNameIsSuz · 27/10/2015 08:35

Good luck missdee!

I'm tired too, ds got up early all weekend after the clocks changed and we had a really busy day yesterday at the seaside, lots of walking.

I threw up at work this morning! Thankfully made it to the toilets. Haven't been having a very sicky pregnancy so was a surprise!

hayleycookie · 27/10/2015 09:38

Wow thank you for the detail Dobby that was very informative! Thank you Missi and Marmite it's lovely to be able to get an honest point of view, and not just what the NHS website says. The main worry I have is not being able to hold my baby afterwards. I'd read somewhere that you can't pick baby up for 6 weeks after! Though it sounds as if you all had really good recovery periods. I had a catheter fitted after my son as I had a 'traumatic' birth, as well as about a dozen cannulas! I have another scan at 34 weeks and if it hasn't moved I THINK they book you in for a section date then and there, so hopefully it won't be an emergency section. I think general consensus is that emergency sections are worse than planned ones, which makes sense!

Beautiful I did book an appointment, but the next available slot they had was 23rd November!

Suz I haven't been very sicky this pregnancy either, but get the odd random occasion where I throw up! Seems to be no pattern to it at all!

Q I love the Walking Dead but didn't manage to stay up for it last night, so planning to catch up on it tonight. I heard something BIG happened so trying to stay away from Facebook to avoid spoilers!

Trinpy · 27/10/2015 10:42

Good luck for the scan missdee.

Ds got up a reasonable hour this morning so I think he's back on gmt now (thank god!).

Are you all planning on going on maternity leave quite close to your due date? I was going to go at 36 weeks but my work has changed a lot recently (very physically demanding job) and I really don't know if I can keep going that long with spd. I'm considering taking mat leave at 34 weeks and taking a couple of weeks annual leave before that - so stopping at 32 weeks. Not sure if I'm being a bit of a wimp though!

marmitemofo · 27/10/2015 10:54

trinpy I'm going on leave at 37 weeks but a) I have a job which is mostly desk based and can work from home and b) I can only afford to take 9 months leave so want as much time off post birth as possible! I think it really depends on your personal circumstance and given yours it doesn't sound like you'd be wimping out at all! Best not to push yourself and know your limits!

dobbythedoggy · 27/10/2015 11:03

hayley I'm pretty sure the advice I was given in 2012 when dd was born was lifitng nothing heavier than her for the first 6 weeks. As soon as I was able to move out of the bed I could lift her in and out of the cot. Then at home I had no problem carrying her up and downstairs or around the house. I just avoided carrying her in the moses basket (put her in the pram down stairs if dh wasn't in to move it) and the car seat.

I was really afraid of having the section, and have probably been labled as an nussance patient due to the amount of fuss I kicked up about the idea of having one. (I've seen my named consultant rather than one of his registars at the early appointments I've had, so sure I'm on a list somewhere!) I got a tour of the theater which they don't normally do and talked over the op and risks countless times. Feel so much more relaxed this time.

TheMshipIsBack · 27/10/2015 11:09

trinpy I work a desk job so could technically go quite late, but I found the third trimester exhausting last time and I'm almost 4 years older now, so I will not push myself. I intend to work half time after the Christmas holidays, so from ~31 weeks (using annual leave), and go on mat leave from 38 weeks, but I may use some more annual leave to go off as early as 36 if I'm not holding up well.

Good luck with your scan today missdee!

QforCucumber · 27/10/2015 11:20

Can't remember the weeks but I plan to have my last day as the 19th Feb, 1 week annual leave and then maternity leave - due March 10th.
Am office/desk based and only work a 10 minute drive from home so hoping that it'll be ok.
Likemarmite I'm only taking the 9 months ish (returning to work 3rd Jan 2017) so would like as much of that time paid as possible.

hayley be careful on active on here, not sure if it's been removed yet but someone posted a spoiler in AIBU with the spoiler in the title haha! it was a BIG episode! We have an android box so watch everything on that - swear by it.
