Welcome to the thread StillRising, MrsSimkins and rdr15.

We certainly were all a productive bunch in May Wink

I was wondering whether anyone else in the group experiences sciatica, and whether it has flared up since your pregnancy started?

I've had it on and off for around 10 years but it is manageable with regular exercise. However, since my pregnancy symptoms have interfered with my ability to exercise normally, I've found my sciatica is getting much worse. But I'm not sure whether it is just a result of less exercise, or whether pregnancy can enhance the symptoms...I really hope not!

rdr15 · 16/07/2015 09:10

Yes 2 under 2 is going to be quite challenging! I worry about how it will affect my daughter and whether she will understand when she's suddenly getting less attention. Also been feeling very sickly and dizzy so have been getting quite irritable with her when she's wanting to play and then feel guilty for getting ratty with her it's a vicious circle!

Morning, welcome newbies Smile

Very strange thing happened this morning. I opened my eyes and the room was spinning, like my eyes were spinning in my head. I went warm and clammy and felt sick. I layed still for a while after it had stopped then turned onto my left side and it started again. I went downstairs to get a drink of water and came back to bed then a while later I puked all the water back up. Felt a bit light headed for a while after but I feel ok now but I'm going to take the day off work as I drive for my job and don't want it to happen again behind the wheel. Hopefully it was just a one off.

I'm spending the day on the sofa with tea, chocolate and biscuits Grin.

clara I've had sciatica in the past due to a prolapsed disc. It's not caused any problems so far but at my booking in appointment my midwife said she was going to get me an appointment with the anaesthetist so they could check there wouldn't be any problems with an epidural if I needed one

Stepawayfromthezebras · 16/07/2015 09:43

phoenix that sounds grim, hope you feel better soon. Your recovery plan sounds like a very good idea Smile

rdr15 · 16/07/2015 09:53

Phoenix I keep getting that every morning and on/off throughout the day it's horrid isn't it and very disorientating. I've been signed off work for 2 weeks with it :( Chocolate and biscuits ate my default coping method as well :) hope u feel better soon.

clarabellski · 16/07/2015 09:54

I'd love nothing better than to be on the couch with tea and biscuits today. I've had that same experience Pheonix but oddly last thing at night rather than first thing in the morning. It was so wretched I didn't even have the energy to cry!

Thanks zebra, I was wondering whether I should mention my sciatica to the midwife but in light of what you've said I think I should! It's just one of those things you live with but hadn't thought about how it might affect labour etc! If labour pains are anything like bad sciatic pain, I can't wait! Not

NoMontagues · 16/07/2015 09:58

Hello and congrats to the new joiners!

rdr I have an 11mo and am 12 weeks of now. So in a similar boat to you and quack !
Loads of positives to having a small gap though. I hope. Grin

rdr15 · 16/07/2015 10:04

NoMontagues congrats to u too :) everyone keeps telling me there will be lots of positives and I guess they're right! The nappy and potty training will be over quicker and they'll grow up together. First things first though I'm going to have to buy a double pram Shock they are so expensive!

Boobear1983 · 16/07/2015 10:12

phoenix low blood sugar? I have those symptoms, before I got oh and for me it's low blood sugar. It has got much worse during pregnancy, I had to have extra blood tests which I'm waiting for the results.

Stepawayfromthezebras · 16/07/2015 10:22

Yeah definitely mention it clara I'm dreading it making a reoccurance in pregnancy, so much pain especially with only being able to take paracetamols, they didn't even touch the sides!

monkerina · 16/07/2015 10:23

Phoenix- I have similar issues, normally upon standing (my vision entirely blacks out 3 or 4 times a day). Have had it for a long time and for me it's related to low blood pressure and other neuro issues. Blood pressure is supposed to drop in the 1st trimester isn't it?

Alternatively- agree with Boo, could be low blood sugar, or vertigo!

Welcome newbies Smile

Pogmella · 16/07/2015 10:29

I've got low bp and my vision cuts out when I get up too fast from lying down esp after a big meal (apparently all your blood goes to your intestines)

QuackQuackers · 16/07/2015 11:40

clara I suffer with sciatica as a side effect of a slipped disc a few years again. Typically the pain is off and on. Last pregnancy from around 16 weeks I had constant pain which the only way to ease even slightly was stretching exercises. I googled a lot and found two that helped a little. I used to do them when in most pain and just before bed. Sleeping was really difficult as when laying down it hurt the most. A long pregnancy pillow was a life saver. It didn’t help the pain but definitely didn’t make it worse (which sleeping without the pillow did).

As you say paracetamol is useless so I didn’t even regularly take that.

I’m worried the constant pain will kick in earlier this time. But so far I’ve just got the usual good days and bad days symptoms. SO fingers crossed it’ll stay away a little while longer yet.

Last time I also suffered with quite bad SPD. I could still work, but was on crutches. It really limited the amount of walking I could do, which really made the sciatica worse. As you say – exercise it what helps. Post labour my hamstring was extremely tight and so I had quite a lot of work (chiropractor and deep tissue massage – ouch) to try and address it.

Definitely mention it to your mw. Though I have to say mine was useless. They did eventually refer me to the physio department at the hospital but they were equally useless.

primarynoodle · 16/07/2015 11:47

i could bloody murder the idiots at hmrc!!! They put the wrong address down for my employer so now she has to reenrol to pay me - if she backdates she'll be fined and if she doesn't then i dont get maternity allowance!!!

i dont even earn enough to pay tax and ni!!! Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry just sitting here sobbing into my cup of tea feeling like the world is going to end and very very sorry for myself Biscuit

someone cheer me up! are there any more lovely beans to be scanned this week?

NoMontagues · 16/07/2015 11:55

primary - your boss will have to backdate it and pay the fine, if it genuinely wasn't her mistake I'm sure she can claim the fine back.

You can't miss out on your maternity allowance because of someone else's error!

MayFlowers16 · 16/07/2015 11:57

What a balls up Primary, I agree with No though, there must be a way around it, especially since it was neither your nor your employer's fault. Yes, I have a scan on Saturday Smile

Onecurrantbun · 16/07/2015 12:02

rdr and quackers - you will survive
They will be the hardest and best few months of your life
I have a slightly bigger gap (DD1 was 2.2 when DD2 was born) but seeing them now DD2 is nearly 18m is wonderful. I am a SAHM so had both kids with me all day everyday. You don't have to take my advice of course but all I would say is:

Buy a tumble drier
Embrace anything which gets you a big more sleep or rest - slings, co-sleeping, Frescoes to bribe eldest, CBeebies...
Don't worry if the house is a mess and you and DP seem to be living off takeaways

It was so much fun I'm doing it again - DD2 will be just 2 if baby is born after 39 weeks!

Onecurrantbun · 16/07/2015 12:03

Frescoes? Freddos!

BadgieBear · 16/07/2015 12:07

Happy news here - had an early scan as DP abroad on business and will miss our 12 week scan.

Lovely wriggly little bean, 9+6 from dates and 9+3 on scan. Heartbeat seen and heard....can't believe am actually having a baby (vomiting aside!) Smile

primarynoodle · 16/07/2015 12:11

BadgieBear · 16/07/2015 12:20
