PlumpBump, I've avoided peanuts too (did accidentally have some peanut M&Ms in the car one day though - was starving and there was a bag in the glove box so I ate 10 or 11 before remembering I wasn't supposed to have peanuts). Why is it just peanuts while other nuts are OK? And it kind of makes sense to me that if you don't expose a baby to something, it won't develop and immunity to it, so maybe we should all be eating peanuts with abandon! I could kill for peanut butter on toast ...

Sallyally, that's quite reassuring re. small amounts of alcohol. Maybe I will have that glass on Christmas Day after all!

I've also eaten prawns, and I think I had one Mr. Whippy-style ice cream in the summer, again without even realising I wasn't supposed to have it. It can be quite hard remembering what's off-limits sometimes. I've also eaten a fair bit of tuna - probably not more than a couple of medium-sized cans a week though (and some weeks not even that).

My next-door neighbour, whose baby was due in January, gave birth on Monday 5 weeks early! Baby is a tiddly 4lb 7oz and they are both still in hospital as baby was so tiny. Made me panic a bit last night - for some reason is just hadn't crossed my mind that ours could be early and we still have so much to do! Haven't ordered a cot yet, the pram thing is back to square one thanks to bloody Two Left Feet and I haven't even thought about baby clothes or any of the other stuff we'll need. As for my hospital bag, I haven't given it a second thought. Think I'd better use the time I have off over Christmas to get a few things bought and sorted!

Peanuts are a tree nut and basically due to the proteins in them are the kind that is most likely to cause allergy. I have a severe allergy to nuts (well, most of them) but peanuts are the one that are lifethreatening. It's been a long while since I had a 'proper' allergy to them so I'm not sure if I'm still as bad (as you can grow out of it). My mum ate peanuts when pregnant with me. But what is probably more relevant is that I had a tendency to allergic conditions as my dad was asthmatic. And then wehn I started with eczema at 3 months old, a lot of the creams in those days contained peanut oil. That's one theory for why it kind of started up in my generation.

It's something I'm terrified about with DS. We don't have any nuts in the house for my safety and given the history of allergies he won't be getting them until at least 3 years old as per the current advice. If that advice changes, we'll change with it I guess. It's rarely the first exposure to a food that causes allergy. It's usually after 2 or 3 exposures. So I'm not quite sure where this new research would fit in with that.

All we can do is go with what we know at the time. Current recommendations are to steer clear of peanuts in pregnancy, breastfeeding and weaning if you have any family history of allergies/eczema/asthma at all.

As for the mr whippy... how many times have I wanted a mcflurry??? Still haven't done it as I'm pants with guilt and if anything did happen due to a mcflurry I'd be a mess!

Alocin · 14/12/2006 12:31

why no mr whippy ice cream?

geordiemacmincepie · 14/12/2006 14:11

Hey ladies.. just popping accross from the April thread.... was just wondering whether we had any scottish mums on here... if so, there is a new thread in the pregnancy section entitled bumps north of the border... please pop in and say hello.. we have occasional meet ups and generally moan about the state of the scottish health system.

Apologies for the blatnent tout..

becs21 · 14/12/2006 14:38

heu guys sorry havent been on to update for all of u that were so great with ur advice and concern been off work since monday back in 2day i had some kind of reaction to the iron tablets for 1 the hospital told me that my iron isnt that low therefore when i took the pills i had to much iron in my body which made me sick and the product caused a reaction for some unexplained reason i think midwife put me on them to soon but they wont admit that

MoosMa · 14/12/2006 15:14

Glad you're ok Becs, did they explain the bleeding or is it still a mystery?

I'm feeling a bit today as dh and I finally managed a bit of sex last night! It's been 4 months as I've had thrush and all sorts on and off. He's been incredibly patient (he normally can't wait 4 days!) and we both keep saying how surprised we are that we haven't killed each other yet! Trouble is I'm feeling like I've baseball batted today (due to varicose veins getting a bit cross) and struggled round Asda having strange contraction-type feelings - guess they're BHs.

Ah well it's worth it, I think I've made DH's Christmas!

becs21 · 14/12/2006 15:55

no they couldnt explain the bleed said nothing to worry bout still cant help be a tad worried iv had so much stress in the pregnancy i worry wot effect it may have on my lo wot wiv moving out for first time on my own and going this pregnancy alone due to ex partner being a complete waste of space moan ova, i could do with a drink i havent touched a drop since i found out although did drink alot be4 i found out lots of vodka i feel bad bout that but then i didnt know, i may have to treat myslef to a glass of wine ova xmas

sorkycake · 14/12/2006 17:00

Well you're all TOO good it's a bit sickening really
I didn't drink until past 16 weeks purely because I didn't feel like like it. Then the Toon were in Europe and I've had a bottle of beer whilst watching the matches. I went out for a Christmas party and drank 5 units, which did make me feel slightly guilty the next day but it was over the space of 7 hours.
If I fancy a glass of wine or a contraband food then I just have it, the fury at being made to eat a certain way causes me more stress. Maybe it's a bit like deciding you're going on a diet and then craving chocs, simply cos you can't have them.
The scaremongering drives me nuts tbh. I saw the pissed n pg programme and really wanted to know whether any of the parents featured had children with FAS or related conditions because I suspect not.

becs21 · 14/12/2006 17:24

sorkycake ur soooo rite that programme made me sick wot a load of shit if u ask me i really do want a glass of wine and a peanut butter sandwich i dont know why i dont just treat myself and stop obsessing ova it

Tommy · 14/12/2006 18:12

only 4 months moosma?

(the last time we managed it was when this baby was conceived..... too anxious for first 12 weeks then the piles and veins got in the way )

Hurrah! Sex, booze and peanuts! Its christmas - lets live it up ladies!

apartridgeinapeachygirltree · 14/12/2006 20:57

Here here

MoosMa · 14/12/2006 21:48

Wow Tommy, Mr Tommy must be a real hero! MoosPa has been ok most of the time but every now and then he gets a bit frantic, the poor thing!

Plumpbump · 15/12/2006 09:50

Funnily enough MrPlump has been very anti (thinks the baby will hear/know/or indeed be nudged - in his dreams!!!). Now am just too big!

Speaking of which, I saw midwife yesterday and she's booked me into the hospital for a scan today.....increased fundal height. Am 30 weeks and measuring just over 33cm. It could be anything from being a biggun, to having lots of fluid, but am a bit nervous - anyone had a similar experience?

Alocin · 15/12/2006 10:31

Well I told my dh that he should be thankful - he's been getting some at least every 2 weeks!

Re growth- saw my mw last week at 29 and half weeks and was measuring 32 weeks, she didnt seem bothered, says baby is having a growth spurt (nothing to do with copious amounts of chocolate then!). Hasnt mentioned a scan or anything - am seeing her again just after christmas so will ask her then.

Sallyallyally · 15/12/2006 13:09

Had a scan yesterday..private anomoly type thing. Absolutely fantastic.DH thought he had determined the sex of the baby, but turned out what he had spotted was a leg!!!! (typical man overestimation eh?!), so still don't know what we are having. Baby is measuring 34 weeks..not bad for 33 1/2! My abdominal measurements at clinic put it as larger, so please don't worry all of those who are measuring a bit big or small, it's just a check to make sure there is some growth rather than an exact science. Nice consultant popped on the 4d view at the end so we could see it's face. Frankly it looked rather cross!!!!
Oh yes, it's no longer breech..turned a couple of days ago so I'm in celebratory mood. Therefore I am putting on a pre Christmas party to which you are all invited. There will be platters of shellfish, pate, a Mr Whippy style ice cream factory, peanut butter sandwiches cut into little triangles, home made tiramisu, a vast cheese selection, a champagne fountain, alcopops, flowing rivers of wine, beer on tap and as many other nibbles as I can rustle up in the tap of a keyboard!! None of theses things will affect your waistline, pregnancy or glucose tolerance levels. The chairs will be comfortable and automatically adjust to bring relief to backache, piles or restless leg syndrome. Massage therapists will be readily available. Best of all, if you haven't a thing to wear then you can come in your dressing gown. (oh..and there will be award winning creche facilities guaranteed to keep siblings amused, stimulated and smiling!). No one will be offended if you drop off to sleep during the party . RSVP!!!!!

Tommy · 15/12/2006 13:14

oooh pate - now that I do miss

I am measuring a bit big as well but did with the DSs as well so I'm just assuming I have another biggun in there!

You lot who are still having sex, you're making me feel guilty now - perhaps I ought to make a suggestion for Christmas..... but our bedroom is being decorated at the moment so might be a bit impractical - I spent last night in the spare bed with DS2 (how does a 3 year old boy take up so much room?) and DH was on the zed bed in the DSs' room - not much opportunity there really!

LMAO, at sex chat Ladies. We seem to be peaking at same time, hehe. I too indulged for first time in 16weeks at the weekend there. Had an amnio 4 months ago and had major paranoia about endangering my baboo. Fortunately DP is coolest in world, (subjectivity alert!!), when it comes to such things and it hasn't been an issue, but he seems to delight in the experience none-the-less, lol. It was quite surreal for me though.

Here I am again still in my pj's at 1 in the day, is it just me or are there other slobby ones amongst us? Don't see the point if I'm not going anywhere, and quite frankly putting on socks, pats and trousers involves way too much snorting and grunting for my liking.I sound very much like a rutting rhino! I've become so so lazy, but am blaming it on the spd and taking none of the rap myself.

On the plus side I'm getting new Zelda game tonight so my days are going to be fun-filled until I complete it. Anyone else play it or am I, yet again, the oddball in the mix?

K.x

apartridgeinapeachygirltree · 15/12/2006 16:13

Hi all
Lovely spread Sally,
As we are being open about it, there's been no sex in the Peachy house. I have suggested it but DH seems not too bothered. I would settle for a bit of a fumble quite frankly.
I really stuggled today. I was awake for about an hour and a half around 3am and really felt it in school today. We had christmas dinner which was a nightmare really badly organised, no one seemed to know whose table was being served, people had the wrong plates. one of my children was in tears etc etc. I am really ready for the weekend and the holidays (only monday and tuesday morning to go)
One lovely thing about school is that a child in year six who I see a lot (she comes to 'help' us in cooking) keeps stroking my tummy and having a little chat with the baby every time I see her. None of the children in my class has really noticed.
Off to learn how to give birth tomorrow - at the hospital. I think it could be make or break for DH as to whether or not he comes in with me.
Have a good weekend everyone

suzi2 · 15/12/2006 20:46

I was measuring 4cm over at 31wks yesterday. I've been 1-2cm over most of this pregnancy so it's really only 2-3cm over that. MW wasn't concerned as she reckons it's a growth spurt - which often happens around this time. She said if I was significantly over when I see her next at 35wks they might investigate it. People keep asking me if I'm having a Christmas baby... or twins... a bit different from when I was pg with DS and was always told I was 'neat'. Measured 2 cms under with him and he was a good weight etc.

Bump is killing me... I have pulled all my tummy muscles manouvering DS about. They're so sore and tight that I can't let them relax at all so am taking paracetamol most nights for the pain And eczema is on a huge flare up and the dermatology folks at the hopsital have given up getting it cleared and are just trying to keep in bearable as they think it's hormone driven. That's fine by me tbh, but the dressings etc I have to put on my legs are becoming really tricky bump wise! They have said they can dress them every day if I go in lol.

Sex wise... we did something the other night. More because it was easier than doing anything else for DH! ButI got very little out of it! Too uncomfy for anything else.

Talking of food - does anyone have any interesting cravings? I'm on and off things. Recently it's brandy snaps and waffle ice cream cones (without icecream). I'm back on diluting orange which was a craving with DS. But haven't got an embarrassing addiction to poppadums like I did with him!

thelittlestboho · 15/12/2006 21:31

No cravings at all, this time. Last time I was more into texture/sensations than actually tastes. Like the smell of old books, that drove me wild, just wanted to eat them, had to make do with ripping popcorn apart with teeth instead.I so wanted to devour the entire book!! Ice crunching also but the cubes HAD to be half-frozen, so as I could suck out the chilled water and then savour the thin frozen casing, lol. Timing was everything! They also had to be eaten in a particular sequence, it was madness. I had several trays on rotation, as did my mum. Then went through a phase of eating raw mushroom, and that they were consumed in a ritualistic way. Isn't pregnancy a funny old condition?

P.s
Can everyone have a look at this

suis · 16/12/2006 06:52

Good grief...hello over here as well Suzi2... sympathising with the pain at night. My restless leg, combined with a bit of SPD, is currently making me want to remove my legs with a chainsaw just so that the rest of me can get some sleep. Posting at 6:45 isn't getting up early, it's getting to sleep very late.

.. and people keep asking me if I'm having twins too, and being shocked that I've still got 2 months to go. Apparently bump is the right size for dates, so it must just look big on me coz I'm small.

Sex... ? I can barely remember how I actually got pregnant to start with.

Craving navel oranges. Has to be the ones with the really thick skins and the extra bit at the end or it just won't do.

suis · 16/12/2006 21:01

Hurrah ! The search for the holy grail seems to be over... we have purchased a Jane Carrera Pro, as it's the only damn buggy that goes in the back of a Ford Ka without having to be dismantled into a million bits ! It does also have the advantage of being a rather groovy umbrella fold which even I can manage and it's coming with a carry cot and car seat ! DP says to say it's also good that it has a continuous handle which he feels is much better if you have a baby / toddler / shopping / cup of tea in the other hand. Also he's 6'3 and I'm 5'2, so adjustable handle was kind of important for us.

Thank You to everyone for all their help and suggestions on this !

andyrobo237 · 17/12/2006 08:58

Morning ladies - all well here in the robo household. Just psyching mysef up for breakfast - porridge as it is the best thing for keeping my sugar levels down - not too great when you can't put a sprinkle of sugar on it!!

Back to hosp this thursday to see consultant again - see what they have to say this time - threatening to put me on insulin - might make this eating lark easier! Had pizza and homemade potato wedges last night and had slightly higher levels - also dd is like the food police - you can;t have cake mummy as it has sugar in it...... my mum has obviously been talking to her!!

Had diagreement with DH about christmas day last night - I suggested that we see his dad in the late afternoon after we had beeen to my mums for lunch, but he said no I want to see him in the morning. Oh great - so much for a nice easy day for me - means we have to get up and ready and round to his dads before noon and then go to my mums and then back to his brothers for the evening (possibly calling at home for a few hours in between) - the travelling isnot a problem as it is only 20 mins away to both parents (opp directions) but it is the principle of rushing around! We will be spending most of the evening with his dad, sister and brother anyway - so I don't see what the problem is - but that is men for you!! Normally his dad would cal up here but he can't drive for another 3 weeks after his heart attack - so not only have I got to get ready and get dd ready, we are then taking her away from her pressies! Rant over!

forgottenfreetime · 17/12/2006 22:16

Hi everyone, Is anyone els fainting or going dizzy a lot? Nearly fainted for the fourth time this weekend. Not even doing anything particularly strenuous at the time. The doctor has not offered anything helpful - just part of pregnancy apparently. Its just annoying and embarassing really cos I never know when it will come on next.
I'm just winding down from my weekend in order to start work again tomorrow. Isn't that supposed to be thee other way round? Honestly, with all the Xmas present running around, doing my DH's accounts for him, keeping ds entertained while daddy is working, and seeing my mum for lunch I'm glad the weekend is over. Might think twice though I've doublebooked myself at work tomorrow with the midwife and a patient and have to rush home cos its dh's works nite out (just him not me, thank goodness - I just want a night in front of the telly where all I eat is toast). No sex in our house - I feel as big as a house and have decamped to the spare room with a lovely soft bed all to myself which is kinder to my spd. My sympathies suis. I've got an exczema flare up too - though not half as bad as that described below. It interesting to know they think hormones might affect it - I can't say I rememeber having it in my last pregnancy! I'm looking forward to some really nice time off work next week - just the thought that I'm nearly there is keeping me going. Then three weeks back at work and on maternity leave - oh to have an afternoon snooze - bliss. Just need to time it with ds naps!
