Last night I ventured out of self-enforced, (SPD-led!) exile and went to see Basement Jaxx and it was FANTASTIC!!! I was dreading it, but I need not have fretted. Managed to walk to Italian, had lovely meal with friends and family, (DP's 30th), got to gig, boogied on down and STILL walked about half a mile to bus stop. All involving no pain or discomfort!!! What were the odds on that happening?? I even got checked out by a few young men, lmao! How smug did I feel rolling into bed at 1am. Aye there's life in the old dog yet, lol.

On more serious subject, that article on car seats is a shocker! We've invested in a Mutsy lie-back car seat, which cost an extra £20 more than the standard rigid one, I've ALWAYS had my concerns about wee ones being wheeled around in car seats instead of in a proper pram. I ranks up there with people who insist in putting newborns in the lightweight collapsible buggies. It's awful to see them all scrunched up, looking umcomfortable. Make the TLB very very annoyed at their ignorance towards their children's well being.Rant over

Ho ho ho.xx

peachygirl · 09/12/2006 15:32

I saw the article in The Times about the car seats yesterday. Thanks slightlymadsanta for bringing to our attention.
I braved Bluewater (big shopping centre for non south people) today with my parents and bought my last newborn bits, Sleepsuits and vest from John Lewis and muslins, bibs and socks from M and S, In fact the socks were priced wrongly and when I got to the till I was only charged 1p for a pack of 5!!! Do I get the prize for the best baby bargain?
Maybe you should all pop into your local branches to see if they are all like this. They are plain white ones ones and they should have been £3!
Have a good weekend everyone

suzi2 · 09/12/2006 22:23

I've had a lot of sickness the last couple of months - usually due to excess acid. My MW tells me that sickness, for a variety of reasons is very common in the third trimester.

Regarding the car seat thing - my DS was probably in his more than he should have been as it was one of the few places he would sleep! Saved all of our sanity lol. But I do agree that where possible, your baby shouldn't be in one. Although if it's that or throwing your baby otu a window in frustration and exhaustion then I would go for that and keep a very close eye on them.

And some seat the babies in better positions than others. I know that DS was never very scrunched in his maxi cosi cabrio but my friends graco one her DS is almost in a ball! Unfortunately, this upright scrunchy position is ideal for proper safety in an accident in the car.

forgottenfreetime · 09/12/2006 22:40

Hi Can I join your club? Due Feb 27th (same date as ds1 was due two yrs before - how odd is that!) I've felt sick recently too. But strangely I think its related to the baby's movements - it comes on when it feels like the baby is swimming in there! All four limbs going at once - not pleasant.

Alocin · 11/12/2006 10:00

Thanks all for replies re Braxton Hicks - I like the idea of not realising I'm in labour til quite far on!

CurrantBun · 11/12/2006 10:19

Suzi, we've gone for the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix seat too so hope tiddler won't be too scrunched up. Will only use car seat for car and short amounts of time - although in-laws are a 4-hour drive away and we've been told babies shouldn't be in their car seats for longer than 2 hours at a time, so not sure how that's supposed to work!

That's of course if our order from Two Left Feet ever comes in. Am getting a bit cross now as the delivery time is supposed to be two weeks from placing the order. Had an email on 29 November to say that they were experiencing delays receiving the latest consignment of Quinny Buzzes from the manufacturer but that they should arrive within 7 days. Emailed twice last week for an update but have heard nothing. It's one of those annoying mail order things where they won't let you ring unless it's to place an order - all after-sales follow-up is via email and they're supposed to respond within three days. If you try to call they just put you through to a voicemail message which gives you the email address relevant to your order. It's SO frustrating not being able to speak to someone and find out what's going on.

andyrobo237 · 11/12/2006 13:05

Well I am utterley and severly hacked off!!!! Xmas Sad

Been on blood sugar monitoring since Friday and my levels are all over the place. I have been given some strict parameters by the hosp and it doesn't matter whether I eat really healthy stuff (ie all fresh meat and veg) or porridge or weetabix or egg sandwiches, but the levels are random! It is getting to the stage where I am bothered doing the testing 2 hours after a meal to see what it comes up with - they are supposed to be phoning me today or tomorrow to discuss my levels - and I can see them wanting me to go to see them again on Thursday - I haven't really got the time - busy in work, stuff on at school and I frankly can't be bothered! I am sure that another week won't make any difference - I feel fine (apart from the cold and sore throat I have) in myself but this is becoming a real pain! I feel sorry for diabetic women who have to go through this all the time - but from what I can tell - I have been given really tight parameters compared to a 'normal' diabetic!!

Anyway - rant over - we will see what the rest of the day brings!

Got the wardrobe for the bubas bedroom yesterday - so need to get that put together so I can store away all this stuff - it is getting beyond a joke!

Hope everyone else is ok!!!!

Sallyallyally · 11/12/2006 13:14

Ok..I'm grumpy today as I can't sleep!!!! Tried body pillows, support pillows, v pillows, no pillows, every other combination of blinkin' pillows you could imagine (in fact could now open my own pillow consultancy) but CANT GET COMFORTABLE. Scan later on this week, don't be surpirised if you see me next day in the tabloids. 'Radiographer in shock as Octopus twins discovered during routine scan'. There is no way this can be ordinary singleton..must be several babes with assortment of sticks stuck in various ribs!!! Will now go and eat extra large bar of Dairy milk and not share it with anybody!!!!!

Plumpbump · 11/12/2006 13:15

Hey Currant Bun

Don't want to add misery to your current mail order dilemma, but did you see the feature of two left feet on Watchdog? Read about it here

Do you live far from Bedford? Might we worth popping there if it drags on, but I'm sure they'll sort it out soon.

WELCOME! Forgottenfreetime - lovely to have you aboard. Sorry you have been feeling sick - I am sure that our babies are making the digestive system into such a scrunched up mess!

Good advice, Flowertot re "over purchasing". I guess us first time (and subsequent) mums just get to ants-in-our-pantsy about the new arrival that retail therapy and Getting Organised help speed it all along. I've not taken any of my purchases out of packages or labels off anything and have stored in a plastic box, with receipts, so DH can go on a giant exchange run if we have a early, small or super sized bub!

We bought our nursery fabric yesterday! Dad is fantastic seamster so is making us curtains for window and instead of a couple of cupboard doors, wit cot bumper and basket linings to match. Feeling very excited now!

My Quinny Buzz and its many extra bits arrived. All in all, I'm really pleased, though I made a bit of a boob on the car seat; is a Maxi-Cosi Cabrio not a Cabrio Fix, so we won't be able to have the luxury of buying a fixed base for the car with a push button release! Will be grappling in rain at supermarket, whilst threading seatbelts through. I'm sure you wise ones will tell me that it gets easier with practise!!

Got the some Christmas decorations and a tree up this weekend and feeling quite festive! Is our first owned home so feels extra special!Just think, ladies, it will be the home strait after Christmas!!!!!!!

Sallyallyally · 11/12/2006 13:16

Sorry Andyrobo, wrote my message before yours popped up. Retract Dairy milk comment...will eat something low sugar and healthy in show of solidarity!!!

Sallyallyally · 11/12/2006 13:19

Hey Plumpbump...put up our Christmas tree yesterday. Don't sparkly lights make everything look magical .

Plumpbump · 11/12/2006 13:29

Love Christmas! Hurrah! Sorry you are sleeping so badly - I do sympathise. I understand it's not unheard of for late pg women to decamp to an armchair. I ache all over and feel like I've walked around town in my sleep all night!!

Andy - sorry you are having such a rubbish time. Perhaps if you do get time to pop and see them, they might sort you out once and for all?

Plumpbump · 11/12/2006 13:29

Plumpbump · 11/12/2006 13:30

Sorry doubled up!

CurrantBun · 11/12/2006 14:05

Plumpbump - no, I hadn't seen that about Two Left Feet. Oh God. At least it's another 11 weeks until bubs is due so hopefully we should have the order by then. It's the inability to contact them and speak to someone which is driving me mad - especially as they say they respond to emails within three days and they haven't responded to either of the ones I sent last week. It's probably about an hour's drive to Bedford from where we are so we will go there in person if need be.

We put our Christmas tree up at the weekend which is lovely! I LOVE Christmas! Have got a nice wreath for the front door too and a few 'Christmassy' candles to dot about.

Also had the wardrobe and chest of drawers for the nursery delivered on Saturday - turned out to be a bit of a pain though as the design of our house means there's a bit of ceiling that sticks out over the bend in the stairs so wardrobe wouldn't go up. Hubby ended up taking it apart and reassembling it in the nursery so no major harm done - just time-consuming and frustrating! Just need to get a cot now, and start buying clothing etc.

One of my favourite Christmas indulgences is usually a large tub of honey-roasted cashews and peanuts - obviously off-limits this year as peanuts are supposed to be avoided. Couldn't find any tubs of just cashews on their own - but then discovered Sainsbury's Taste the Difference honey-roasted (wild Canadian honey, if you please!) cashews and macadamias - YUM! Even nicer than cashews and peanuts!

Almost finished the Christmas shopping - just wrapping to do now and a couple more presents to get. And I only have the rest of this week and two days of next week to work before I finish for Christmas! When I go back afterwards I'll only have about 4 weeks before I start maternity leave! Hurrah!

becs21 · 11/12/2006 16:53

hey just need some advice im 31 weeks pregnant and been to midwife today been put on iron tablets i have taken one 2day on her advice but now a few hours later im feeling really sick bad headache and iv just been to the loo and im bleeding slightly has this happened to anyone else be4??

Alocin · 11/12/2006 18:03

Hi Becs 21

Not sure I'm the best person to give advice - but why dont you ring NHS Direct on 0845 4647 - I'd definitely want some medical reassurance.

Let us know how you get on and try not to worry.

Sallyallyally · 11/12/2006 18:18

Becs21...iron tablets can make you feel sick, but shouldn't give you bad headache and definately don't cause bleeding. Phone up your midwife or labour ward straight away and go in for check up. (midwife speaking here..no messing about!) Probably all fine but too risky not to be dealt with today xx

becs21 · 11/12/2006 18:30

i have never felt so sick i cant work out if the bleed was from front or back

Plumpbump · 11/12/2006 18:35

becs - do you have an NHS Walk In Centre (like a 24 hour doctors for emergencies) - definately ring NHS direct. Nothing is trivial when you are pg - you and baby come first. Let us know how you get on.

becs21 · 11/12/2006 18:38

thanks for the advice guys there isnt a walk in place round here cant get hold of midwife and am at work till 8 i have just been sick surely i shouldnt be feeling this ill with them?? i dont know what to the bleed could have been from the wrong end but i cant be sure culd they cause a bleed from there?? even tho they are iron tablets i feel so drowsy, im worried this cant be rite

Plumpbump · 11/12/2006 18:56

Do you have the tablets with you, Becs? Sometimes they have a leaflet which explains side effects.

When you say bleeding, what colour was the blood? Bright red or dark brown? Was there a lot of just a few spots? Sometimes pg women can get piles which can give a little spot of blood when they wipe.

sorry tmi...

Plumpbump · 11/12/2006 19:00

NHS on the internet says

Iron deficiency anaemia is managed by treating the underlying cause and replacing the iron that is missing from the body.
Taking iron tablets is the usual way of building up normal levels of iron again and should be taken until the blood level is back to normal and then for a further three months to build up the iron stores.
A different iron preparation or a lower dose (taken for longer) may be an option if the standard treatment produces side effects such as an upset stomach, constipation or diarrhoea. Stools may be black when iron is taken. Tests may be advised if the cause of the anaemia is not clear.
The adverse effects of iron tablets are mainly nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation. These are directly related to the amount of iron in the intestine.
Another full blood test may be done two weeks after treatment has started, in order to assess treatment response. The haemoglobin level should rise by about 0.1g to 0.2g per decilitre per day (about 2g per decilitre every three weeks). Iron replacement will normally be continued for three months once the haemoglobin has returned to normal, in order to replenish iron stores in the body.

However, you said you only took one? But then maybe that's enough. Anyhow, if you really can't leave work early, ring NHS when you get out.
