I tested mine by composting them. They disintegrated in days.

DeladionInch · 05/04/2015 13:34

Tbh I found sposie liners trapped the wet and made him red so I gave up unless I knew he was teething and things were likely to get grim! I've binned a few fleece ones too Easter Envy good job fleece is cheap

Liners are wet wipes without the wet

It scares me what the marketing people will try and sell you without considering the consequences. I'm a fairly sceptical type anyway but being a parent has really opened my eyes to exactly how insidious advertising is - 90% of baby products are totally unnecessary. Fun to have but you don't need them.

Pampers nappies. 12 hours of dryness. Fine at night once they stop peeing every 5 minutes, but would you really leave your child in their own excrement for 12 hours just because the packet said you could? A surprising number of people I've met have, until they actually thought about it. Or I've been polite enough to keep my face blank and they may well still do it - their child their decision after all.

ovumahead · 05/04/2015 15:32

monkey I would talk to your boss face to face, emails can be easily misinterpreted. Plus easier to gauge their initial reaction when talking to them. Good luck!

Re nappies - we never used liners as we have the fleecy ones we just used to plop the excess into the loo and flush... Easy peasy. Not so easy when the contents are squelchy so liners might be useful then... Can't even remember the name of the nappy brand we used but I love them. Well maybe love is a bit of a strong word to describe by emotional reaction to these nappies but it will do!

ovumahead · 05/04/2015 15:33

And reusable wipes - we got loads of bamboo ones which were wonderful and so soft.

Found the library map! Reusable Nappy Week is coming up and there'll be some major bargains around :)

Bumgenius! That's the name of the reusable nappies we have. But from 7 years ago... So older version. Hope they haven't rotted in the attic!

DeladionInch · 05/04/2015 19:14

I use own brand non bio, and just bung a few drops of lavender oil in. I dry outside as much as possible which blows the smell away as well as UV bug killing awesomeness :o

You might find the elastic has gone ovuma but kits are easily available to replace them. I'm going for nb size as if this one is like ds I'll get a good couple of months from them. I'm 1/3 of the way through a pair of longies, will fb a pic when I'm finished if you like?

Lovelybitofsquirrel · 05/04/2015 19:16

Envious - we just use Fairy non bio and I've found a full dose works better for us than the half that is often recommended. We have a baby care setting on our machine which has a pre-wash that I use as a pre-rinse, then extra rinses at the end.
We have mostly Little Lamb, bamboo fitteds with wraps at night, sized pockets and one-size-fits-all pockets (with poppers to adjust the size) in the day.
We use cotton terry cheeky wipes, white ones for bum and some I dyed green and yellow for hands and face-I don't wash them together though!
Like with slings, if you can find a local library it's worth trying out a few to see what suits.

CommanderShepard · 05/04/2015 21:06

I used Fairy with white vinegar in the softener drawer.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 06/04/2015 00:02

Ooh, loving all the nappy chat! We're going to aim for reusable but are utterly bewildered by the selection out there and all the different options. I'm also.interested to know which give the best balance of absorbancy and bulk - DH and I are both quite slim so I keep imagining a little baby in this giant.combination of nappies, boosters and wraps!

Bumgenius seem to get good reviews? Also like Little Lamb. Our nappy library seems to have disappeared but will be in touch with the Oxford one. May use liners further down the line but will only flush after I've seen how they break up in.water. Hadn't realised how many people thought makeup/baby wipes were flushable! Shock

We're probably going to use naty disposables whilst we get used to having a small person. I know there isn't enough air in.our landfill for then to decompose but at least they're better than nothing. We already use their nappy sacks for the dog! Oddly it's really difficult to find degradable poo.bags but really easy to find nappy sacks (which most people then fill with non biodegradable stuff!)

We used to use Ecover but are total Method converts now. Their detergent comes in a tiny pump action bottle and is super concentrated. You then just buy refills in pouches. We find it has exemplary cleaning power, even after DH has been on DofE/CCF expeditions with the boys! We also use white vinegar for towels so imagine will do the same for nappies.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 06/04/2015 00:08

Oh, and monkey I totally agree with those saying speak to your boss now. Please dont worry yourself, they can't be so daft that they haven't thought of it at all. Apologies if I missed this but are you outside the UK? Or is it a paid vs SMP issue?

Suddenly feeling quite lucky seeing what others get.

monkeymoonpig · 06/04/2015 07:29

Thanks ppl, ill try and have a sit down today and make a few notes on what id like to say, and hopefully grab the boss first thing tomorrow before he gets distracted with a telephone call/emails!
lastnight im UK, whilst SMP is great compared to other countries (v. lucky i know), unfortunately it just wont pay the mortgage/bills :-( 90% for first 6wks is great but then down to around £540/month scares me! Wish we could save every month so we have something ready but unfortunately its not feasible at the moment. Really could do with winning the lottery lol ;-)

ovumahead · 06/04/2015 08:14

monkey when I was on maternity leave last time, I took the max time and got into debt to do it - it was totally worth it. Probably not 'sensible' but it's such a precious time! Will do the same again this time if I need to, but bit better off financially now so fingers crossed. At least if you tall to your boss you'll know either way and then can start planning! Or waging war, if you have to...

monkeymoonpig · 06/04/2015 08:53

ovumahead it would be useful to know now so i can prepare for the worst! I think ill just have to be completely honest and, whilst its really not their problem, hopefully they will be generous again. I'm hoping to sell it to him delusional by saying what ill be able to do whilst off - work from home/go in day or two a week once initial newborn period is over etc. At least i know whats coming this time around with no sleep etc!
But yes, will be good to know how the land lies really.

DeladionInch · 06/04/2015 09:00

last night gnappies are pretty trim AFAIK, and you can get disposable inserts for them. also available for delivery by ocado iirc!

CommanderShepard · 06/04/2015 09:04

lastnight I really recommend The Nappy Shed - it's been taken over by a new lady so in Marston not Wallingford but that's where I got our nappies. Annoying that the city council don't do a scheme but Cherwell or Vale of White Horse might - not sure.

Waiting for my consultant appointment at 20 weeks now and starting to freak out a wee bit. I'm pretty set on a VBAC but I really want to have as little monitoring as possible to the extent that I'd rather be in the MLU but I can't see them going for that. That won't bother me so much if the pre-eclampsia fairy visits again, but if she doesn't... I think I'll feel better once I know who I've been assigned to as then I can do some research or chances are I saw them last time. I know the JR are pro VBAC, so we're on the same side there, but it's the details that are bothering me.

I resent a lot that I bounced back from the EMCS, to the surprise of the medical team -but this time I'm being treated like I'm made of glass. Ugh. I don't know how I feel, to be honest

Treaclepie19 · 06/04/2015 09:46

I fell off the thread again.

I hope you are able to talk them round commander, ultimately it is your birth.

OP posts:
monkeymoonpig · 06/04/2015 10:01

commander good luck with getting your desired birth, i hope you manage to pursuade them. Im in a similar situation but more to do with my BP than other concerns. Im asking every visit for them t put me down for MLU but mw still putting me down for Telford consultant led for now - even tho my BP has been perfect do far, because i used to be on medication (that the consultant stopped when i was 12wks preg) mw is just being over cautious. Just have to hope BP stays ok towards end - it shot up at 41wks with DS (not pre-ecl tho) so fingers crossed this babba comes on time and we may avoid it! Our MLU unit is 3 min drive from home, Telford is 45mins - hour Sad

monkeymoonpig · 06/04/2015 10:02

On another note - ive just made and eaten 5 pancakes. What a pig i am Shock Cake bloody lovely tho lol
