My midwife said they don't check the heartbeat in my area anymore as it's just a 'snapshot' Sad. I know it shouldn't be relied on as an indicator that all is ok but it's still nice to hear. She said they just rely on you monitoring movements instead.

Thepurplegiraffe · 18/01/2015 17:25

My mw wouldn't do that last time at this appointment Broody she got really funny about it. I am feeling pretty anxious at the moment so I wish they would.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 18/01/2015 17:27

Thepurple in my last pregnancy they didn't check until the 24 week appointment as apparently it can be hard to pick up at 16 weeks and can cause people to worry. This time they're not going to do it at all!

jmojo · 18/01/2015 18:18

Wow, we used to check from 12 wks. I have done it at 9 wks before in special circumstances. I haven't worked for 4 years but tbh you know it is only a snapshot and largely pointless, but if it makes the mum smile isn't it worth it? Midwifery is about holistic care which means caring for the whole woman and family. Whilst we know it isn't a medical guarantee of anything it makes mum feel better!
It is just mean not to do it!

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 18/01/2015 18:21

That's what I thought jmojo. I live in a really busy area and know they need to save time but it takes seconds to check the heartbeat and you'd think it would be worth it for the mum's peace of mind/reassurance.

jmojo · 18/01/2015 18:22

We used to prepare mums that it can be hard to find, esp if they are larger, then you might wait until later.

Thepurplegiraffe · 18/01/2015 18:24

Absolutely, it may well be a snapshot but you get to be reassured that baby is ok at that point and time. Really starting to think about a reassurance scan now.

broodylicious · 18/01/2015 18:28

Oh that's such a shame if things have changed since I had dd and I won't be able to try and hear HBHmm I will pester mw at my appt though all the same. She refused me an early scan despite me blubbering all over her when explaining my past, so reckon least she can do is try to listen in. I won't sue if she can't hear for my mcflurries or double cheeseburgers Wink

Natanotherone · 18/01/2015 18:39

beaker I think I am also going to go with the bugaboo donkey duo, I'm in love with it. I was going to get the city select but aesthetically the donkey just pleases my eyes much more...
Also a sling wearer, have a couple of wraps and a Mei tai but will defo require pram as well.

What made you go for the donkey?

Ceejay14 · 18/01/2015 18:39

I was told to bring DH to my 16 week appointment so he can hear the heartbeat, so they do still check that in my area.
We got our Downs test results back yesterday - low risk (woo hoo!)

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 18/01/2015 18:41

Natanotherone id love the donkey but can't convince DH it would be worth the money... Still working on it!

Naturegirl82 · 18/01/2015 19:02

They still check in my area (well 1-2-1 do not sure about nhs). My Mw checked for hb at 10 week booking in as she thought she may be able to find it and she did Smile But she did make it clear if she couldn't then it was just that baby was really small.

Natanotherone · 18/01/2015 19:07

gotto use the resell value as argument, if you look after it years down the line you will only of lost 300-400 on it so actually it didn't end up costing that much as you will get most of your money back! :) that's how I won it by showing him how much they go for second hand. I'm very lucky. Dad works at john Lewis and the discount will either be 15% or 25% (obviously hoping for the latter) which brings the price down considerably.

SophieBarringtonWard · 18/01/2015 20:45

Ooh wraps, nat (and anyone else), any thoughts about what to get for a July baby? We have used a Moby and an Ergo in the past, happy with them both but want to do back carries from earlier on which isn't possible with a stretchy wrap. Also want something cool enough to sling baby in the summer, which the Moby isn't going to be… I am looking at woven wraps but ideally want something I can use through the summer even if it's hot, and on into toddlerhood.

I have my 16w appointment tomorrow with my 1-2-1 midwife, so I guess I will see if she listen to the heartbeat! I hope we do as it is nice to hear it but I am feeling "okay" about the pregnancy so don't mind if it isn't policy anymore.

jmojo are you a midwife?

Naturegirl82 · 18/01/2015 21:27

sophie I'm wondering about a new wrap as well. I've got a JPMBB stretchy which you can use for back carries but it's really thick so think it will be far too hot for summer. I was thinking about a lightweight woven, I've trialled one before which I liked but I don't know if a woven will be as practical as a stretchy. I'm going to pop down my local sling library at some point to get an idea of things.

SophieBarringtonWard · 18/01/2015 21:37

yeah, I was wondering about a gauze wrap, but then not sure if I would want something thicker - they are quite cheap though so could get a gauzy for the summer and possibly something else later... Also need to go to my local sling library for some expert advice!

WiIdfire · 18/01/2015 21:42

My '16' week appointment isnt until Im 19 weeks - a combo of me being on holiday and midwife having no clinic availability. Would like to hear what happens in it from those of you having them soon. Hope I dont miss anything important having it so late.

SophieBarringtonWard · 18/01/2015 21:45

Wildfire from memory it's not a big deal, they take your blood pressure, check your urine & ask if you are feeling okay. Possibly listen to the heartbeat or possibly not. But I will update tomorrow for you!

Zampa · 18/01/2015 21:45

I was thinking about skipping a pram for the newborn stage and using a sling until baby is pushchair ready.

Is this mad?

Do babies need to lie down rather than being semi-upright in a sling?

SophieBarringtonWard · 18/01/2015 21:58

no it's not mad Zampa, that's what I did with both DC.

Natanotherone · 18/01/2015 22:06

I have booking in appointment tomorrow, not seen anyone yet apart from GP and sonographer for a quick scan to see how far on I was.
Been getting tons of cramping that I don't remember with previous pregnancies although I'm assuming it's all normal.

jmojo · 18/01/2015 22:20

I am thinking of a wrap too but it needs to bd light weight as it is hot where I live.

sophie yes I used to be a mw until I moved abroad 4 yrs ago.

wildfire the 16 wk check is as Sophie says. A lot of units used to send all their low risk women to the GP for a check at 16 wks rather than the mw. I don't know if they still do that.

Butler4 · 18/01/2015 22:29

16 week midwife appointment tomorrow morning so will update you all then. Husband is away (works away) so will miss this one again. Looks like 'came alone' will be written in my book again! Oh well lol!

JoY007 · 18/01/2015 22:58

I have a GP appointment tomorrow as my 16w check. Saw MW at 14w and she listened to the heartbeat.
Next time I see mw is 25 weeks according to my appointment sheet.

My Consultant was quite reluctant to listen to hb saying no point and difficult to find, when I shamed her that mw had no difficulty finding it she succumbed.

It's been a very lazy weekend for me, all I did was sleep and eat, only left the house briefly to go grocery shopping. Hmm

misseskimo · 18/01/2015 23:14

Need advice. Am I overreacting here? Laying in bed talking to DH and my 15m old kitten is bouncing around being a little terror, then suddenly she jumps onto the bed and "lamb leaps" onto my stomach with full weight on front paws into me... Winded me a little, and was a little painful, but then seemed ok. Now 10mins later my belly feels a little uncomfortable and is popping like mad against the inside of my belly. Do you think everything's ok and maybe this is just me feeling baby movement for the first time who obviously isn't happy about being bounced on or could it have hurt baby? Kitten is only about 3kg ish maybe a little more. So not massively heavy, unlike my other cat. Am I just being paranoid? Sad thanks x
