We've bought some "bouncing baby" eco nappies to start with, as well as some water wipes and some eco wipes - they're supposed to be good and I like the fact that they are a bit better for the environment. But if they are leaky then I have no qualms about changing to a less environmentally friendly brand.

I don't know if we'll use reusables, we will likely try when baby is a few months old and see how we get on, but I'm not going to beat myself up if we don't manage!

Mel sorry to hear things have been tough, glad they are a bit better now. Thanks

I would have loved a baby shower with Boo, seems a bit silly having one this time round though i'm holding out a tiny bit of hope that mum will surprise me with one a family friend is expecting her first and had a baby shower which seemingly involved lots of cake. I'm all for cake!

We've gone for tesco newborn nappies for bump, I was ridiculously excited to find they now have wetness indicators!

Hello everyone.

I've been away a while, thought I'd check back in on this thread, and mark my place while I read back on it again.

I'm 24+5 and I'm feeling HUGE. I think part of it may be food from christmas. I was probably this size at about 28 weeks with DS. The constipation I had in the first few months has come back again now.

Really busy trying to write an assignment by the end of the week. I am stuck on it. Stayed up working on it last night, then DS (2.3y) decided to wake up and would not go back to sleep, and ended up in our bed. He wouldn't let me turn away from him. I woke lying on my back, most uncomfortably, with his head resting on my chest. He's wanting to be cuddled up with me a lot at the moment, and I'm wondering if it's to do with the baby. He then woke me up by poking my face early in the morning. So shattered now and desperate for a nap, but don't have time.

Lots of kicks and movement now. Starting to feel very very pregnant, and since Xmas has gone, I really feel like the countdown has started. Finishing work in 8 weeks! Woop Woop!

Nappies- I use Asda or Aldi for my toddler- depending on where I'm closest to. I have to go a bit out of my way to get them- I shop at Morrison's for everything else but don't like their nappies. When DS was small we used Pampers till I realised Asda were just as good, cheaper, and didn't smell so bad! Pampers used to smell really strong! Don't know what the Asda nappies are like for newborns but will probably try them.

I have done no shopping for this poor baby other than a Close Caboo sling ( I got into babywearing a bit later with DS and I can't wait to carry the new one). I've got a loft full of clothes, I sorted them out very early on, so that there is a huge bag of gender neutral newborn up to to 3 months clothes. I cried when I sorted the clothes out, because of how little they are and the memories they brought back of my boy being so tiny. But I'm now tempted to buy something new and lovely, since most of them were second hand to start with and it would be nice for the poor little mite to have some stuff thats not third-hand or more!

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 07/01/2015 14:03

oh goodness, I haven't sorted out clothing or nappies yet. I figure if she's born this early she'll be in hospital for quite a while so I'll have a while to get sorted before I have to worry too much about such things either way. You are all making me feel behind! lol

Hidingthefear · 07/01/2015 14:26

thanks fizzy that helps, will have a look at the weights before I buy. want to get some in a few weeks time to spread the cost a little rather than having to fork out on nappies when he's born and money will be tighter due to Mat pay.

good look with it all Mel,hope things settle down, but good to know you feel strong enough to do what's right for you.

I went to my nans last night who said i didn't look fat anymore and my bump looked much more round. She then proceeded to tell my DH that he should whats what he eats as he was getting fat. I just blurted out "god you're so rude". DH just laughed and said yeah I have put a few pounds on! I love him the way he is so not bothered what she thinks, she's not so slender herself. She did give me some nighties and a pair of button up pyjamas and dressing gown that I could have for hospital. they were all white with patterns on, very old lady like, but free is free, and I may even dye them dark blue or something (possibly put some white babygrows in with them too)

What was that bucket dye you were all using recently?

Lauren82000 · 07/01/2015 15:32

Cow biscuits I know what you mean about constipation. I gave myself a fisher at the weekend Confused not had one for absolute years. Think mine is partly due to dodging veg over Christmas as I wasn't cooking many meals and just went from house to house eating junk. Blush and partly due to baby hanging out quite low, it seems to have stopped the flow.
Back on a decent enough diet now I'm back at work with plenty of veg and fruit so should get myself regular again soon.

I've had a look at those water wipes but I begrudge paying £3 for 1 pack. Johnsons do a version that's 97% water £2.30 and Tesco do their own which are 98% water and £1.10! For the sake of 1.9% I'd take the cheaper ones. I used Tesco, asda and morrisons own nappies last time although I found morrisons were a little on the small side compared to the others. I would happily use own brand again. But it's still too early to start stocking up, maybe next payday or half term at the end of feb I'll start getting them.

cinnamongreyhound · 07/01/2015 15:53

Huggies are by far the best wipes imo and after often on offer bogof and sometimes bogtf!

roastpots · 07/01/2015 16:04

Hi everyone, I've been absent for a while now too - but just had a quick catch up and great to hear everyone is doing so well. I'm 28 weeks today and so entering the third trimester - can't believe it is here already! I totally agree that now we are passed Christmas it feels like th count down is on. I'm actually quite scared about the next few months - we are due to move house (prob when I'm 36 weeks) and I am hoping to keep working right up until my due date (for money reasons and also because I have loads of work to do!) All that combined with a very active 20 month old toddler feels like quite a lot to manage! We went to see our new house again today and I was trying to imagine living there with a newborn baby but it's really hard to get my head around. I've got a midwife appointment on Friday which is my first since 16 weeks, which feels like ages. Looking forward to getting checked out. Last time I got anemic towards the end and I'm keen to try and avoid that this time because I was sooo tired with it. You should be able to claim the KIT days for work you do at home - I did this last time and it was really good to be paid for some of the work that I inevitably had to do...

Ebwy I haven't sorted a thing if baby comes early I'm just going to sit on the sofa, breastfeed, and let everyone else do everything.

I think we'll probably just use water wipes for the first six weeks or so as they are quite pricey (though I bought a four-pack so it worked out a bit cheaper)!

OP posts:
BrixtonBunny · 07/01/2015 16:25

Just seen talk of reusable wipes - they sound fab! Will investigate...

PenguinPoser · 07/01/2015 16:41

Glad things are a bit better now Mel and hope everyone else is ok today - hope you're feeling better cinnamon.

I'm just waiting to go and see GP as I have thrush again for the 4th time this pregnancy Blush so annoying as I hardly ever get it normally! Hope she can just give me a prescription - would have been happy to treat myself but now that I'm obviously pregnant pharmacies are a lot less willing to sell things like that!

Will definitely be trying out Aldi nappies at that bargain price! I have a couple of sample packs of theirs. Have bought some asda ones and some pampers, and plan to see what suits baby best before buying loads. Also got a 4 pack of water wipes on offer. Another thing you can also get in bulk on amazon which works out cheaper too if anyone wants a load of them. I've heard (don't know if it's true) that wipes are frowned upon in hospital and they prefer cotton wool and water? Thought water wipes might be a good compromise!

Lauren82000 · 07/01/2015 16:51

Yes your supposed to use cotton wool and water but it really doesn't work on first poo's and you end up covered in fluff with a huge pile of used soaked cotton wool and still have a dirty bum. Confused At the end of the day your baby your rules! I'd tell them they are welcome to clean said bottom themselves or get over me using wipes.

daholster · 07/01/2015 17:13

I was just going to say that although we have used Huggies wipes (much better at wiping than water wipes!) Since dd was about 4 months old and we went on holiday and got lazy, we used cotton wool and water, no chemicals on her bum and actually we found that perfectly fine. Willl probably do the same again while he is small until his skin is settled. Ftms just so you know newborns often get really spotty and rashy for weeks. I remember my beautiful dd having awful spots til she was about 8-10 weeks old! But she was so beautiful... Must have been, even the HV said so Wink

Going to post a picture of the clothes I have bought the bump. I'm sad that a lot of the boys clothes seem to be dark not pastels. Lots of grey too. That's not a new born baby colour for clothes!!! Have got one grey one though.

Not buying more til I have all the unisex stuff down from the loft from dd. There'd some giraffe stuff and white/beige stuff up there if I remember rightly.

Which reminds me that I must ask my cousin for the handmedowns I sent her back!

Cisforcat · 07/01/2015 17:47

Hi all,

I know it's been a long time- I started the thread and then life just got v busy so haven't been on for a while! What with awful morning sickness that wiped me out til 17 weeks, moving house and various other things including my DD 1st birthday it's all been a bit manic! Have loved reading up on everyone's news so glad your all doing well!

I'm 28 weeks now and growing HUGE! ( no idea how there is any room left for the next 12 weeks growth!). Def more out front this time than I was with DD so perhaps that's why I feel so big!

SPD has hit hard this time- which in all fairness I knew it would but I must admit with a 12 month old and being very immobile I am starting to really struggle. Still got 11 weeks of work too ( can't afford to start mat leave earlier ) so know it's going to be hard going. Had physio for weeks now but am on reduced hrs which is one thing!

Anyone else struggling with SPD? Any coping or advise?

I am having a boy and we have decided on Jack ( which I know has been mentioned too!) and think we are going with Neil as a middle name as it's my DHs. ( family tradition that we also have done for my DD- using my name obviously!)

Got GTT test tnrw but not looking forward to it after reading others posts! Sure I'll survive!

Glad to be back though and a big wave to everyone! third trimester here we come!!!!

BrixtonBunny · 07/01/2015 17:52

Penguin that's why we bought water wipes - didn't fancy using cotton wool (which I can't bear the texture of anyway...Bleugh Shock)

OP posts:
minipie · 07/01/2015 18:00

Afternoon all - I am struggling to keep up with the pace of chat on here so sorry if I have missed anything major!!

GTT - yep got that next week, joy. It's the lucozade one. I have normal BMI and no family history but have got PCOS which apparently means greater risk of GD.

Scans - I have a growth scan at 36 weeks due to underactive thryoid. 50mcg/day for me but take an extra 100mcg a week since being pg.

Water wipes should be ok even by hospital standards I reckon - when DD was in NICU the nurses were trialling them instead of cotton wool so if they are ok for prem babies they should be ok for term newborns I'd think? Though you might get some sniffy old school midwives I guess. TBH after the meconium stage I actually preferred to use cotton wool instead of wipes for a while, as DD's bum was so tiny a huge wipe felt a waste, but she was only 4lb something Smile

I'm 28 weeks on Sat - got 28 week appt next week. Need to have anti D, whooping cough jab (I think? or is it too early) and ask for Mat B1 and thryoid and iron blood tests. I'm expecting to test low for iron, I have started taking Spatone but probably too little too late. I tested quite low at booking in and been feeling pretty tired recently - though that could be because DD has been sleeping SO badly again, please please please can she start sleeping ok before this one arrives.

I need to start sorting out baby clothes too. Still on my shopping list: a few baby clothes to fill the gaps (we borrowed most stuff for DD from 0-9 months); an extra monitor/extra handset; a double buggy, unless my friend can lend me hers. Oh and the newborn nappies, maternity pads etc.

Sex: none here. The drs reckon DD's early arrival was prob due to an infection of some sort so I'm being extra careful and avoiding anything near my lady bits except water. DH luckily completely understands.

Siarie · 07/01/2015 18:05

I've got round ligament pain, I dunno what can be done for it. It's not SPD though as it's purely my ligament and in fact just left side mostly. But I swear if I have a walk outside in a few hours and for a day or so it's like every step I'm being stabbed in the groin on that side.

So baby wipes, I'm going for the water wipes. Hadn't even noticed they are more expensive, I just know the reviews are good for sensitive skin. I don't want to use cotton wool and water so they seem the next best thing.

Pampers for the nappies to start with anyway, probably going to sign up to the Amazon family thing.

I've been checking reviews for baby toiletries. Going to go with Burts Bee for that as it again seems to be good for sensitive skin.

Just to add my DH has sensitive skin so I'm expecting our baby will have super sensitive skin!

BananaToast · 07/01/2015 18:09

I've bought a four pack of water wipes and some cotton wool for early days and some packs of normal wipes for later on. Will see how I get on and what I like using before I buy much more in the way of wipes.

smogsville · 07/01/2015 18:21

When you say water wipes do you mean like the huggies ones in the beige packet? Yes they're great. I didn't use cotton wool once including in hospital, sounded completely unnecessary provided you didn't go for perfumed wipes. Or maybe we were just lucky with DD not being overly sensitively skinned.

Siarie · 07/01/2015 18:25

waterwipes.com

The brand water wipes is what I mean but not sure about others? Smile

Rustyzilla · 07/01/2015 18:26

Siarie that is a high thyroxine dose! I'm on 125 per day, had been on 150 when we started trying but doc felt I was slightly over-medicated so dropped me down. 125 all fine until now, when I am apparently borderline, so expecting to have to go down the 125 one day, 150 the next route!

It seems so odd to me that I haven't been referred for an extra growth scan, am definitely going to push for one! I have at least been seeing the thyroid consultant since I was 8 weeks pregnant, tested every 2 weeks at first, then monthly/6 weekly. Siarie, you should really have seen a consultant much earlier than this, surely?

Also, love a bit of Burt's Bees, what baby stuff are you getting?
