Hey wee onion - I have been advised to hand express and store (in teeny 1ml and 5 ml stringes) as I have gestational diabetes. First reason is baby could have low blood sugar although I have good control of my levels and so this should be less of a problem. If baby's blood sugar is low in the first 24 hours then they might want to top up and if I have frozen expressed colostrum there's less chance of formula having to be given. Although the minuscule amounts I'm making might be useless anyway! The second reason is that it stimulates oxytocin production, which can bring on labour, thus reducing the risk of induction as they don't like to let you go over with GD. Hence attempts to express! Might be worth a try for you as you are over! There are some links on YouTube.

More batch cooking, fish pies today. Have officially run out of space in the freezer so am finishing of tubs of Ben and Jerry's to make some more room (what a shame Grin)....

Arkkorox · 03/11/2014 20:32

Money wise it makes sense for me to work till 39 weeks.... and worryingly I dont really feel pregnant... I havent this whole thing and now its confirmed that yes I am actually pregnant and am indeed having a baby I dont feel any different to how I did 4 months ago tbh. I just dont think its sunk in at all and im not sure it will before baby is here really.

haventgotaclue1 · 03/11/2014 21:05

Petal that made me laugh out loud Grin - I too have run out of space in the freezers (have 2 small ones) after my mega run of batch cooking (evening meals, cakes and soups)...if only I had some tubs of Ben & Jerry's to eat up (preferably the one with mini rolo-like pieces in it!).

DH and I have had a really nice long weekend - he had Friday and today off work and we've just been taking it really easy and spending some great time together before bean arrives (and it's definitely making its presence felt right now - so much movement it's not funny....)

Welcome to those who have just joined us too! Smile

Ta ftmk. I know about nipple stimulation / tweeking etc for naturali, duction. I am not thinking of any of that at this stage - maybe after 42 1/2'weeks but not yet.

i can see the sense in having some reserves of colostrum for yr baba with GD.
i was never able to hand express with DD. Could pump gallons though so not worried about supply this time. Its the latch that stresses me more!

most folks are pretty in tune with what I'm like and know not to put pressure / stress on with well meaning texts. I had talked this over with mum / sis and they have been really considerate.

i am trying to remain amused with the incessant "are you still here?" "when you going in for induction" and "bet you can't wait to get that baby out" comments. the assumption being that i am,desperate to have this baby and will now be going for induction....
i smile sweetly and cultivate a dignified mellow look. :-)

Annarose2014 · 03/11/2014 21:18

weeonion do you have a limit beyond which you won't go?

I have an appt at 40+5 on Wednesday & of course they're going to bang on about induction to me. Am tentatively thinking I'll consider it 10 days over but since its my first I don't know, tbh.

weeonion · 03/11/2014 21:33

Annarose - i have always said that my EDD from.scan was so much earlier than my own dates ( 25th oct v 5th nov). At this stage, i really am not thinking of induction as an option for me. I know there are some risks as time goes on but i am willing to balance those with the actual risks of induction / interventions. I reckon once i hit 43 weeks, i will review it all. As long as i am ok and baby us ok,- my own view is that there is no need to induce. Getting fab support from homebirth and FB groups on it all.

i really am,trying to,keep all, stress away and remain, focused and relaxed. I know all too well the major change / upheaval of the new baby and whilst i am excited to meet new baby, i am,loving this time with dd and dp. X

Annarose2014 · 03/11/2014 22:08

Ah I see....I suppose I'm worried about placental degradation - also my hospital seem to have 10 days as their limit so thats when they're gonna put pressure on me to be booked in for.

Not that I care at all about that, tbh, they can fuck off in general....

BUT I'm aware I'm fairly fucked already with the SPD & sleeping so badly etc etc so going more than another week just doesn't appeal. Have also been on mat leave since 32 weeks so time is really dragging.

Not that induction appeals either!

I'm just hoping baby makes an appearance this week so it all solves itself.

utopian99 · 03/11/2014 22:54

Anna I went to 41+5 with ds and they only started talking induction when my waters semi-went and it looked like nothing was happening. Our family go way over and my midwife seems to be of the wait and see mindset which is nice, so. I'm more in weeonions school of thought too. Obviously if I thought there was any genuine risk to the baby I'd act though. My grandmother went three weeks over with one of my uncles so our family don't bother to ask close to due dates but friends and dh’'s family do, no matter how often I tell them not to expect anything. I’m not as calm as wee though - DH laughs but I get the rage!

Love it Excitedforbaba - if I go over, I may have to steal it!

Arkkorox - I'm working till 39 weeks too. Most people think I'm a bit crazy but I figured I want to save my mat leave for spending with baby, rather than sitting around bored and lonely on my own now. All seems quite logical to me, although people in work are eyeing me nervously in case I pop early!

Petal - all that calcium in the ice-cream must be good for you!

Hope everyone is doing OK and is happily fast asleep

LookingAtYouKid · 04/11/2014 00:20

Hope you don't mind me crashing your thread with a request...

INFANT OBSERVATION REQUEST
I am a postgraduate student at the Tavistock Clinic, on a course concerned with studying infant development in the first year from birth.

I am looking to find someone, due to give birth soon, who would be willing to let me observe their baby, with them present, in their home, once a week for an hour, over the course of a year. I live and work in North London and need to find a family not too far from me.

My work would be supervised by the Tavistock Clinic and all information would be treated as confidential. I have a curent DBS Clearance Certificate.

If you might be interested in letting me observe your baby in this way then please contact me so that I can answer any queries you might have and so that we can discuss things further.

Many Thanks.

Dr Blondie steal away Grin
I hope I don't go over & have to use it!

Currently killed with heartburn that I can't lie down to sleep but that pepperoni pizza for tea was just so yummy!
I'm soothing my burning throat with a nice bar of galaxy! Well I'm telling myself that anyway....

DrBlondie · 04/11/2014 01:02

Galaxy = another source of calcium!

Lookingatyoukid - I'm in Yorkshire so bit far for you I'm afraid.

weeonion · 04/11/2014 07:25

moggle · 04/11/2014 07:45

Congrats on all the new arrivals!! weeonion exciting!
No signs at all here but only 38 weeks. Getting lots done on mat leave though! Next job is making the nursery curtains :-S
Anyone got some more ideas for batch cooking? So far I've done lasagne, spag Bol, chili (so probs nothing more with mince!) and fish pies. Thought of chicken pie filling but what else? Want to try and get some cakes and biscuits in there too... Any ideas gratefully received!

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 04/11/2014 08:00

StripeyFox · 04/11/2014 08:09

Oooh how exciting weeonion! Have a fantastic labour and I can't wait to hear your news. You have such a good laid back attitude and we're so lucky to have such a fab team of midwives, I'm sure it'll be a wonderful welcome into the world for your wee one. I wonder who will be on call for you?

Such exciting news on all of the new arrivals, it's amazing logging on and seeing baby announcements. Sorry for my uselessness at posting... I have been managing to follow things though. In fact I must add myself back onto the list as I seem to have disappeared. I'm 37+4 today and getting super excited for the arrival of the baby. Have also been batch cooking but my freezer appears to be full to bursting. Sorry about everyones aches and pains and problems sleeping, not long to go for us all now though.

haventgotaclue1 · 04/11/2014 08:38

Good luck Weeonion - keep us up to date!

Moggle, I've made 3 lemon drizzle cakes and some bread pudding cake - both of which freeze really well. Also cut up a load of left over roast lamb and frozen it in separate bags so can make a quick curry (with a jar of shop-bought sauce) when needed!

Thisisimpossible · 04/11/2014 08:40

Ooooh weeonion! Hope it all goes super smoothly - I've found reading your last few posts really interesting. I am really quite keen to get this little baby out and meet him or her, and the thought of going over scares the bejesus out of me but your take on 'it will come when it's ready' has helped me calm down about it all a bit. So thank you Smile and I can't wait to hear your updates!

xx

pinkgirlythoughts · 04/11/2014 08:56

Good luck weeonion!

I really want to do some batch cooking, it was a lifesaver in the first few weeks after DS was born, but unfortunately we don't have a freezer to store any of it in, and the new one isn't being delivered until Sunday :(

Am getting slightly worried at the minute about DS and his sleeping when the new baby arrives. MIL babysat on Sunday night so DH and I could use a cinema voucher we'd been given before baby arrives. Everything seemed fine, and she said he went to sleep easily, although she didn't sit with him til he fell asleep as we do, she said he was okay with that, and didn't make a fuss. Last night, though, was bloody horrendous! Screaming, crying, refusing to lie down in bed, and shouting "please don't leave me!" when I had to nip downstairs to let DH in from work :( . Slightly worrying, as he'll most likely have to spend at least one night, possibly more, away from me and DH when I'm in labour. I'm not really sure how to deal with this one either, as it seems he's okay when he's actually with someone else, but when mummy and daddy are back, that's when he remembers that he didn't like being without us, and panics in case we leave again Confused

Strawberryfield12 · 04/11/2014 09:21

weeonion keeping fingers crossed for a beautiful arrival of the little one!

I am not explicitly doing batch cooking as such, just every time I cook dinner i do it double and try to cook dishes which are good for freezing. After we have had our tea, the rest goes into foil container. Got quite a bit stored up this way already.
moggle what about baking &freezing muffins? Some recipes can actually be great for healthy breakfast. Ottolenghi has one with carrot, apple, wholemeal flour, nuts and oat crumble topping. Tastes great and has lots of good stuff inside, just what's needed to get the energy back! If you want, can take a pic of the recipe from the book.
