Hi ladies, I'm sorry for disappearing for so long. I've just skimmed over some of the threads I've missed, and see that a few of you had asked about me - thanks for thinking of me. I got very uncomfortable the last couple of months of my pregnancy, mostly because of SPD. It was much harder than my singleton pregnancy with my older DS.
My boys were born at 33+3 on 24th July, weighing 4 lbs 4.5 oz and 3 lbs 11 oz. My waters went spontaneously the night before, and I was given a drug to try to stop contractions long enough to be given a second steroid injection (12 hours later) to help strengthen the babies' lungs before they were born. It didn't work though, and labour progressed very quickly. By the time I was examined and found to be in active labour, the first twin was born 20 minutes later, with his brother seven minutes after that, and the placenta another seven minutes later. The entire second stage was only 39 minutes! I had intended to follow the recommendations to have a epidural (due to higher risk of intervention with twin births), but there wasn't time, so I pushed them out with just gas and air, which was fine as they were small and both stayed head down. It was actually an easier delivery than with my older DS (with whom I had a home water birth), and I felt fine after. Not tearing this time made a huge difference to my recovery.
The boys were doing well for their gestation, but because of their prematurity, spent 17 days in NICU, which was tough, especially the first week when they were in incubators and on oxygen, feeding tubes, etc. We've had them home for 12 days now, and everything is going well. They are lovely sweet little things and I am bursting with love for them. I am spending most of my time breastfeeding at the moment, trying to feed them in tandem whenever I can.
Congratulations to Topmammy, Cookielove, Bugoven, Teabiscuits, ilovemonstersinc, and anyone else who has already had their babies! Good luck to everyone still waiting!
