Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
magichandles · 04/08/2014 13:17

gun - I found it really hard dealing with my readings going up and up the first time I had GD, even though I was doing everything I could, but this time I'm ok with it and am just doing my best. That's the thing I hated most about GD last time as well, with all the other stuff you can't eat when pregnant, it just feels so restrictive as I tended to stick to the same sort of things that I knew worked for me.

I did buy chicken breasts for chicken salad this morning though Grin

gunwalloe · 04/08/2014 13:24

[magic] I know what you mean I feel so guilty if I mess up. I got cocky last week I had had brilliant readings and started thinking perhaps I was ok and they got it wrong so I had half a plate of Chinese which produced a 9.5 I felt awful that my blood had spiked like that had visions of the baby ballooning because of my stupidity. So now its protein and salad with a tiny amount of carb as they said I have to have some.

Was your last baby ok when they were ?

Me23 · 04/08/2014 13:35

goats glad all is well with baby don't panic re position baby still has time to move. As for size both mine were 6lbs, no issues with their weight as was normal for the gestation I gave birth 38 and 39 weeks.

Re private rooms the ones at my hospital are so expensive no way I would spend all that money on a room, I'm hoping for a 6 hr discharge if all goes well.

gunwalloe · 04/08/2014 13:40

I really enjoy breastfeeding and feel quite sad when its time to stop ive always let the babys decide when they want to stop so its varied from 3 years to 18 months.

I would love a 6 hr discharge ive never got out before 24 hours even on my normal births

magichandles · 04/08/2014 13:47

gun - yes, both were fine, in fact having GD even worked in DD's favour when she was born 6 weeks early as she was a really good size for that gestation. DS was getting pretty big around 34 weeks which was a bit of a worry, but things came under control and he ended up as 8 lbs 3 at 38 weeks. Both had no problems with their blood sugars.

I imagine I'll be induced at 38 weeks again, in fact, I've been mentally thinking that since I found out I was pregnant.

sazzlehopes · 04/08/2014 13:48

goats my boy weighed only 6lb6 and was 5 days overdue so no one mentioned to me that that was small.... I never had any growth scans last time to check. I guess he would have been even smaller had I had him a little earlier at say 38/39 weeks. He was fine though, and seemed to gain weight no problem in the early days!

YellowWellies · 04/08/2014 13:57

Fatpony given that most fathers to be are desperately trying to save their leave so that they can have more time to spend at home with their new baby - I think he's being unreasonable TBH. Lithuania will always be there. Missing out on his baby's first smile because he had to go back to work early would suck. A shared trip is much fairer.

Goats loads of folk love BF. I'm sad to see how many newbies think it's going to be a chore and some horrific experience to be tolerated. Don't listen to corporate brainwashing from companies with a product to flog. Go to a local BF group if you're curious but don't be scared off by horror stories. BF isn't for everyone by any means, and sadly it isn't possible for all women but really it isn't torture either! It can be very lovely. I utterly agree though that having time to learn how to do it right at the start is key to establishing BF for the long term and ending when you both want to.

Am listening with interest to those with GD - that might be me. I find out on Thursday.

mum2kiss · 04/08/2014 13:58

I would love to have a private room if I have to stay in. Last time Dd slept perfectly but I was up.all night because the lady opposite refused to have anything to do with her Screaming baby. The nurses were in and out all night trying to persuade her but to no avail. I was glad to get home the following night and get some sleep!

I think it was fatponythat said about her dh wanting to go away. If it were me I'd probably just tell him how I feel about being left alone and wanting a getaway just the two of us.

I have a week off this week so Dd and I are chilling out around the house today. We've made pita pizzas and done some handwriting practice in between me getting some laundry done and it's been nice and relaxed. Now we're having movie time :)

gunwalloe · 04/08/2014 14:16

magic do you think it was the GD that made you go into labour early? My consultant said I could trial my scar if labour started before my 39 week cs but I had written of going into labour early as all myn have been late. I keep reading about GD mums starting early so wonder if it's possible.

Good luck on Thursday yellow.

binkybunny · 04/08/2014 14:19

I was going to pay for a private room if I'd chosen going through to Dundee. All staying well though I'be chosen the MLU and they have 3 private rooms which they fill first then a ward with 3 beds which has apparently never had more than one person at a time in it!

magichandles · 04/08/2014 14:26

gun - no, I had an infection, so nothing to do with the GD.

Yes, good on Thursday yellow.

gunwalloe · 04/08/2014 14:43

a UTI magic ? eeek ive got one that wont budge ive had two lots of antibiotics for it so far. The diabetic midwife said that the GD can cause you to have reoccurring infections and thrush two of the lovely extras ive picked up due to the GD so glamorous this pregnancy lark!

ohthegoats · 04/08/2014 14:59

Not many of my friends have 'loved' breast feeding - they've done it because they consider it the 'right' thing to do. Some have done it for a year because it's the 'right' thing to do.. that seems like an awfully long time to me, particularly because I'll be back at work in 7 - 8 months. My initial plan, if things work to begin with, is 3 months - until Christmas. I know it might not work for me at all, I know that I might change my mind, but that is my current plan. I'm not going to 'cheat' and buy some formula in advance just in case, so I'll give it a good try, but meh to doing it long term. I want boyfriend to be involved in feeding, and I want my body back and I want my boobs to be fun again too.

Pregnantagain7 · 04/08/2014 15:09

Hi all have been lurking a bit the last couple of days, have got over my hormonal meltdown! Good to hear everyone's comments makes me feel like I'm not the only one occasionally loosing the plot Grin
I had my whooping cough vaccination this morning for me it was a now brainer especially given the time off year our babies will be born all my other children have had croup at some time or another and while it's no where near as serious as whooping cough watching little ones struggling to breathe is just awful.
I had a private room after dc2 and dc3 was worth every penny (about £70 a night ) the only thing I will say is that private room does not equal private care I didn't see a midwife unless I went and found one for the whole time I was there. But to be fair it was my second/third child and I didn't really need anything so I would rather other women who needed them got their time. I was just desperate to go home I'm really hoping for a 5 hour discharge this time but not holding my breath as you have to stay in for 24hrs if your baby is over a certain weight (around ten and a half pounds iirc)
I'm trying to take things easier as all of a sudden I'm feeling very big and heavy dc3 has had a three hour nap this afternoon so I've had chance to chill my other two have gone to do baking with my mum. I'm so so thankfull for a bit of peace :)

ohthegoats · 04/08/2014 15:31

My Boba 4G just arrived - I like it! I can't believe these things are £100 though - money for old rope that is, just fabric and clips! As my mum used to say in a really infuriating way, I could make it for a third of the price... etc.

YellowWellies · 04/08/2014 15:45

Thanks all re the GD. I went early with J (at 35+6) and it was later suspected that I'd developed undiagnosed GD in the last few weeks of pregnancy as he was sooooo big. My 36 week appointment (and bloods) was due about mid labour Grin.

Goats fingers crossed because your baby is on the wee side they will have longer time to turn around from breech. And as for BF it sounds like you are going with an open mind but perhaps have lots of pals with negative experiences which isn't the norm. I was convinced it would be a real chore and would prevent DH from bonding with J. However, it turned out to be something I loved and DH could still give him a late night bottle of expressed milk to enable me to get more sleep. I'm hoping to do the same this time but god knows if I'll be able to sit down and express for 10 minutes every day with a toddler running around the place. I used to just do it in the morning with a cuppa... it was quite relaxing first time round.

Whoever worried about the WC jab? I personally would have it if only because one of the NICU babies in at the same time as my niece had it and sadly didn't survive. The downfall of autumn babies is that they are so tiny when all of the winter bugs come out. I would be too stressed with a newborn in peak WC season waiting for their first set of jags over a germ filled winter. I had the jag with J and had no ill effects and it was a real peace of mind. It's horses for courses but it's not a new injection so its not as if we are guinea pigs.

fedupofrainydays · 04/08/2014 15:50

Absolutely knackered today. Glad I moved the whooping cough jab as really think would wipe me out!

I didn't think I would like bf but I really did. And I got DH involved from about 3 weeks by expressing enough for one bottle that he did around 10pm. Meant I got a break and think was key to me carrying on til ds was 9 months. Knowing the baby wasn't completely reliant on me kind of helped. I went on a hen do when ds was 6 weeks old (I expressed enough for 24 hours!) and DH loved being able to look after him by himself and I got a bit of 'me' back. Obviously had to use the breast pump when I got back in bit my friends soon got used to it!!

When I was ttc number 2 I had really vivid dreams about bf again. I do love the closeness. Hope i can do it again!

Missus2ndwife · 04/08/2014 16:26

My boobs have not grown one bit (much to my OH frustration) and I haven't experienced any leaking as yet. What happens if I don't produce any milk or struggle with quantities?

So I am thinking of buying a breast pump just in case and have seen a 2nd hand Medela going cheaply locally but there are mixed reviews on the internet about safety and cross contamination etc.

How dangerous can it really be buying a second hand breast pump? Surely if I sterilise it with Milton it will be fine?

fedupofrainydays · 04/08/2014 16:33

Yeah. Not sure what the prob will be with second hand breast pump if you sterilise it?! I would stick it in a steam steriliser if you have one, or boiling water as Milton can taste a bit swimming pool like!

fedupofrainydays · 04/08/2014 16:39

Ps. I inherited my SIL double pump and someone else had it before me and there were no contamination issues. Think the attachments were new though. I sterilised it every time I used it though, taking all bits apart. It was a great pump and had a hands free function!!!

Missus2ndwife · 04/08/2014 16:43

Thanks Fedup. I am seriously considering it ... will do some more investigating
ps you're right re Milton - might run it through the dishwasher a couple of times *-)

ohthegoats · 04/08/2014 16:54

I've bought a hand pump just as a stop gap initially, it wasn't very much money and I reckon will do enough to allow boyf to have one feed a day (once I get used to it, obviously). If I'm going to go full on into it, then I'll get an electric one and all the proper sterilising gubbins. To begin with it'll be boiling water, since we don't even have a microwave.

My boobs haven't changed either - and there was only one possible episode of leakage - a whole 20p size patch, but it could equally have been stray jizz. Sorry, TMI. We laughed about it quite a bit, because neither of us thought it SMELT of jizz, but there was no other sign of leakage around my boob. Weird.

mrsb87 · 04/08/2014 17:04

Wow lots to catch up on since this morning! Thanks for the hospital bag advice. I will definitely get some energy drinks and some sweeties!

I had my WC jab last week and just had an ache arm for a few nights. Not that much if an issue really. Had my 31wk midwife appointment on Friday and she told me baby was transverse (I had suspected that for a week or so!), kicks on my left side, hard lump on my right and weird tickly feelings at the top of my bump. She wasn't worried though as there is still plenty of time to move, heartbeat was good and strong. Baby still hasn't moved though, really bloody uncomfortable!

I must say I'm sleeping a lit better now it's cooler.

I got myself a swinging crib from eBay, £30, picked it up yesterday and it doesn't even look used! It's all coming together nicely Smile

mum2kiss · 04/08/2014 17:22

I'm pretty sure with the medela breast pumps you can buy new tubing for not a lot of money...although John Lewis have the medela mini electric pump for £57 at the moment which I think is quite good. My sis had one and said it was good. I had a manual pump last time and I do remember getting cramp in my hand from the repeated pumping action! If I can get an electric one this time I will but I'm going to wait until baby is a week or 2 old to ensure breastfeeding is established first.

mum2kiss · 04/08/2014 17:26

Anyone having problems with backache during the night? I find some nights my.lower back is in agony when I'm in bed. Sometimes the dream genii really helps and other times it makes it worse!
