I feel a little overwhelmed with what I need to buy, I haven't purchased anything apart from bottle steriliser, changing unit, nappy bin and some storage things. The woman who did my growth scan today asked if I had got loads of pink stuff already and I felt really awkward saying erm I haven't purchased any clothes whatsoever yet!

I have a friend who has said I can have all her little girls baby bits and she was born October last year so I want to see what I get from her first. Plan to order buggy, car seat, baby monitor and maybe cot next weekend.

I don't have a clue about sleep suits, swaddle things etc feel like there is so much to think about and i keep putting it off because it will stress me. I am sure it will all come together eventually, eeeekkk.

fedupofrainydays · 19/07/2014 16:16

Those of you who haven't bought anything - really it's not an issue as you don't need it all from day 1. Nursery stuff can wait as they aren't in there for first few months.

Things you need to get are some clothes (don't get loads as you will get given tonnes), pack of nappies, changing mat, cotton wool, car seat, breast pads, steriliser / bottles if planning to bottle feed or jic breastfeeding doesn't work out, Moses basket or equivalent, buggy or sling, couple of blankets and millions of Muslins! Think those are the essentials!
People try and stress you out with what you might need but really from day 1 you don't need that much.

Kirstipops · 19/07/2014 17:24

Thanks rainy that's good to know :) - though from that list I still need to buy changing mat, cotton wool, blankets, breast pads and bottles/steriliser (tho planning to bf)! Bought 8 baby vests in Mothercare sale yesterday; despite already having bought the star wrap and swaddle onesie thingie, buying actual clothes like this really made it all seem very real :) The vests are all up to 10lbs though so probably a bit big for newborn to start with (DH and I were both wee babies so I'm led to believe this may reflect the size of ours??)
Mothercare are still doing their Avent "Complete Natural Starter Set" for half price at £75, steriliser, manual breast pump, 4 x 9oz feeding bottles, 2 x 4oz feeding bottles, 2 teats, 3 dummies and a bottle and teat brush. Since I'm planning to breastfeed I've no idea really what I'll need, since I don't know how successful I'll be with it, on the one hand buying the full bottle kit makes me feel like I'm possibly being a bit defeatist, but not buying bottles etc seems a bit naive. My friend said the hospital would give me a go of their pumps anyway so I'd prob be best waiting to see how I get on with manual vs electric etc before I buy anything of that ilk.

porcito · 19/07/2014 17:29

Thanks everyone, makes me feel better. If my attempt to wrap a sling is any indication of my swaddling skills, poor baby may as well just sleep on some straw. I saw some giant muslins on Jojomaman so I might just get those to start with.

I have one tiny vest that someone gave me and a selection of strange animal outfits that my SIL has bought her. goats, I bought all the things I needed in one day last week, dragging it out makes me stressed!

kirsti I was thinking the same, I saw a great deal on bottles and sterilisers, which I ended up buying thinking that I know I'll want to use them eventually. The pump I'm waiting for as if I'm a disaster at it, it'll be a waste.

JellyBeansHaveNoAgeLimit · 19/07/2014 18:38

i am a bit sad i don't get to do the shopping this time! I loved having an excuse to go in every baby shop conceivable 'just to look'! Will have to make do with going through the bags of clothes instead Smile

The heat has really got to me this week, I do feel for the ladies having to get the tube. As much as the sun is lovely i am hoping it buggers off for a bit next week!

YellowWellies · 19/07/2014 19:01

Kirsti TBH most supermarkets sell decent bottles, pumps and sterilisers (Tesco sell the closer to nature starter set) right next to the formula as the 'right! f*ck it - we're going to try FF' middle of the night supermarket dash happens to lots of folk especially mid growth spurt - so don't feel you have to have it in now.

Kirstipops · 19/07/2014 20:37

Just wondering if I'll get even that far tho Yellow, like if I'm in hosp for a few days due to getting an emergency c-section or something, maybe I'll be that crap at bf'ing that midwives will just suggest ff but I won't have any bottles or anything with me! Just expecting the worst I suppose!

JellyBeansHaveNoAgeLimit · 19/07/2014 20:42

Kirsti, the hospital have everything if that did happen so i wouldn't worry. You could just get 1 bottle to put your mind at ease though :)

Kirstipops · 19/07/2014 21:00

Done, thanks Yellow and Jelly, I really didn't want to spend needless cashola!!

sazzlehopes · 19/07/2014 21:05

I second what everyone is saying about not worrying about buying too much now. You really can get everything nearer the time and you never know what size rally your baby will be. I thought I was having a big baby and he came out 5 days late at 6lb6 so teeny! Everything was huge but it didn't matter to roll up sleeves and I had a csection and had to stay in hospital for 3 days and my husband loved being helpful to go out and choose smaller baby grows etc...
Also the bottles and a steriliser adds up money wise and most big supermarkets do sell them so you could easily get them middle of the night if you had to. I had trouble for the first 3 days bf in hospital but they gave me a syringe to hand express into...such hard work! But it gave my ds what he needed until we cracked the bf lark together. I'm sure the hospital would have given me formula and a bottle if I needed it.
I think all you need to order ahead is a few basic clothes, and a buggy, Moses basket/bednest thing and buggy.....

You can buy aptimil bottles now that comes with tiny teats so don't even need a proper bottle. Think they have these in hospitals now too.

MundayCakes85 · 19/07/2014 21:50

Excitement of the evening- winning an ergobaby plus insert for £55 plus p&p! Feel a bit of a bargain hunter Grin
After a lovely week away it's back to decorating the nursery tomorrow. Well DH will be working, I will be chief tea maker Brew

fedupofrainydays · 19/07/2014 21:59

I've just bought a bednest on ebay too!! Eeeeek. Want to have this baby next to the bed as I didn't get on with the Moses basket with ds as kept having to sit up to look at him! But £300 new was putting me off but got one with all the parts for £165 which didn't seem too bad! Going to get it tomorrow.

JellyBeansHaveNoAgeLimit · 19/07/2014 22:04

Hi Munday, not to be all doom & gloom but make sure your ergo is definitely genuine as there are a lot of fakes about which may be unsafe. You can check the serial number with ergo themselves. Well done on the bargin if it is genuine though!

sazzlehopes · 19/07/2014 22:05

Ooh well done ebayers! Both excellent deals indeed...I love a bargain. I'm searching for bednests too just need to find one not too far away from me to collect, or else I quite like the look of these in grey www.thelittlegreensheep.co.uk/the-little-green-sheep/snuzpod-3-in-1-bedside-crib-natural.aspx?gclid=COqUrrqj0r8CFeSWtAodUWsAyQ

Ooh that does look nice too sazzle. If it was my first baby I might go for one of those in grey or white too. Don't really like the wooden look but that's what the bednest I have bought comes in!
Hope it's genuine - looks it from picks! Will see tomorrow!

Otherwise thoughts please.... Maclaren xt or citi jogger gt?? I think those are the right letters after each one!!

fedupofrainydays · 19/07/2014 22:18

Ps sazzle this bed nest wasn't near us either - just happen to be going that way tomorrow for a party!

Kirstipops · 19/07/2014 22:23

Oh that snuzpod is sweet sazzle, there's something sort of early 60s style to it, lovely shape!

ohthegoats · 19/07/2014 22:27

I've just driven down to Cornwall, so stopped at John Lewis at Cribbs Causeway as I was going past. They had a sale on, so I bought 6 plain coloured (but bright colours) sleepsuits for a tenner. Ended up with Newborn size, which has on it up to 9.5lbs - so even if too big to begin with, is at least something. They look massive though - I don't want anything that big to come out of my vagina. Haha.

Also saw this thing: www.johnlewis.com/sleepyhead-deluxe-bed-guard-white/p231482924 that I now have a sudden yearning for. For no apparent reason.

ExcitedCJ · 19/07/2014 22:35

Sazzle that is what im planning on getting but in white.
I had moses bskt last time & hated it. All that up & down from bed to look in & I am sure that DD would have enjoyed being closer to me.

MundayCakes85 · 19/07/2014 22:46

Jelly this one has a photo of the serial number so will double check to make sure. I've been watching them on eBay for quite a while now. Do you think the cat will pretend with me so I can try it out? Hmm

Captainmcgraw · 19/07/2014 22:48

gunwalloe so at exactly 39 weeks then! I'm hoping mine will be about the same day - hopefully finding out in a couple of weeks. Feel like then there'll be something to count down to. Last pregnancy I thought it would be so weird to know the date beforehand but this time I'm all for the practicality of it!

fatpony · 19/07/2014 22:54

Has anyone else got a pulsing/twitching belly? It's very odd.
Started this afternoon and i could see it through my dress when lying down. Still going now. At first i thought it was the baby kicking but they'd have to have some stamina! Maybe just the blood pulsing round?

ohthegoats · 19/07/2014 22:56

fatpony - in the bath I can see my stomach pulsing with my heart beat, then the baby gets in on the action too and adds some twitches. It's a weird thing to watch - I wonder whether I can see it really clearly because of an anterior placenta, so something really is pulsing significantly just under the skin.

Bumpforme2014 · 19/07/2014 23:32

Yes Fatpony, what is that? I thought maybe her heartbeat but wasn't sure.
