Well I've just managed to catch up. I had a really busy week last week which completely wiped me out over the weekend and yesterday, so had a new thread and 11 pages to catch up on! Tiredness has not been helped by a horrible cough, which also seems to have destroyed what was left of my pelvic floor muscles Angry

I have my 31w appt tomorrow, and my lack of preparedness is starting to make me panic. We now have our crib up at least with no mattress, sheets, blankets yet. DH told me today that someone he works with grandchild was born last week at 10 weeks early, which doesn't help the panic!

Sorry to hear about all the extra stresses people have been going through this week.

On a sad note, BIL and SIL who announced their pregnancy a couple of weeks ago, found out at their scan today that they've had a mmc, so I've been trying not to burst into tears all afternoon Sad

AuntieMaggie · 29/04/2014 17:26

blue sorry about your car break in... we had a spate around here of peoples cars being broken into and made a mess of but nothing taken!

patch the whooping cough jab can't make you ill but can make your arm sore

sorry about bil and sil sad news jbiscuit - a friend at work suffered the same a few weeks ago

I've been crying all day as a close friends mum died this morning... just so sad :(

Plateofcrumbs · 29/04/2014 17:41

Thanks for auntiemaggie and jbiscuits

And jbiscuits I'm trying to convince myself the lack of preparation is normal and everyone on this thread who has already bought everything and set up the nursery is weird unusually efficient. Certainly at NCT last week everyone seemed reassuringly clueless and ill-prepared. "Babies only really need you, and Amazon does next day delivery" is my mantra. Having said that, should be picking up the ebay buggy this evening, my first 'proper' purchase to date.

Incapinka · 29/04/2014 18:20

More Thanks for everyone who needs them.

Plate - men are bonkers. Mine went swimming before work and has just got back and disappeared on his bike. Grrrrrrr. Am beginning to think of all this exercise as being incredibly selfish. And he's getting thinner and I'm getting fatter. And I don't understand how they can go off cycling when ill when they can't do anything else!!

And don't worry about not being organised. I was hopeless first time round and almost worse this time round although at least have everything somewhere!!

mixi82 · 29/04/2014 19:01

patch I'm feeling the heat too and before preg I was always turning the heating on, DP would go mad on warm days but now he's happy!

Had my last lot of anti-d today until baby makes an appearance. Also got blood results, GP said my white cell count was up so must have had a bug recently, which I haven't, and iron levels are borderline anaemic. She said not to worry though seeing as I'm taking multi supplements for preg. Should I be worried though? Friend had the same and at 34 weeks they said she was anaemic and had to go on further iron sups Confused

On another note, as I'm 29 wks now, should I be monitoring movements? I haven't really had a decent answer from MWs just said if you noticed reduction I should call in. How many movements should I get roughly during the day and how often? Just want to know I'm doing the right things as it's my first baby

icklekid · 29/04/2014 19:57

From what I've read mixie its a change in usual movements have to be worried about- also 29 weeks. Did read should be 10/ hour but I think I often don't notice wheb busy or its not that often for me yet. ..is getting more frequent regularly though now.

So sorry auntie about your friends mum so sad.

I know I'm a organisation freak I like lists, researching and shopping! Was exactly the same for my wedding!

ZingWatermelon · 29/04/2014 20:05

mixi Counting kicks is not really recommended until 34 weeks as it can just worry you otherwise. You need to figure out what's normal for you. The old "10 movements in two hours" line is totally outdated because it doesn't reflect what your baby usually does. My consultant said not to rely on it, that it's not been shown to statistically reduce stillbirth risks, but instead to use it as a tool to monitor reduced movements if they happen. He said pick a time of day when the baby is usually active and keep a record of what it does. Then just do that once a day. It will vary slightly, you just need to worry if movements reduce and the usual drinking cold water etc doesn't help matters. Don't stress about it but keep it in mind - and if you worry that movements have reduced, go straight to hospital. They won't mind, you won't waste anyone's time, and they'll be happy to reassure you. Don't stop to come on mumsnet, don't sleep on it, do not pass go, just get yourself to the maternity ward pronto. HTH!

NancyinCali · 29/04/2014 23:58

Crazy hot here today (around 90F and predicted to be similar for the next couple of days) so slightly worried about what it will be like in July and how I'll cope with not only a massive bump but also a toddler in the heat.

Re movements: my MW said to monitor what was normal for me and if I think I haven't felt her much to drink cold water and lie down.

Sorry to those who had bad news today Flowers

lemonpoppyseed · 30/04/2014 01:35

Thinking of those of you who have had bad news today. Thanks

icklekid · 30/04/2014 02:51

Hello to those awake at stupid o'clock! Woke up desperate for a wee, felt very sick, still feel very sick. Can I get back to sleep? Not a chance and baby hiccuping away!

I find I get very hot and normally just try and wear lots of layers so can strip off! Not that warm here though so likely to only get worse as (hopefully) weather gets better!

BlueC2 · 30/04/2014 02:55

Oh maggie and biscuits so sorry to hear your sad news :(

The drama continues here as I think my cold has turned into sinusitis...my head feels like it's about to explode with pain from both sets of upper molars and jaw and nose still firmly blocked/bunged up! So I'm awake yet again but this time due to agonising pain rather than just random insomnia, think I'd actually prefer the insomnia at the moment! Just rung nhs direct and they can't give me any advice other than take paracetamol ( I've taken so much I can't take anymore and it's not even touching the pain!) and go to the dentist to rule out any dental issues, I have an appointment in the morning but now pain is mirrored both sides of my mouth I think a dental issue us unlikely!

On the car front it turns out a couple more cars on the street had the same treatment last night and plate the police said they're seeing a lot of instances where there's no damage as thieves have a new way of overriding the electronic locking system so will often wander down roads seeing which cars respond and then quietly having a rummage inside for whatever they can find!!

BlueC2 · 30/04/2014 03:00

X post ickle sorry you're feeling so sick... Hope you can get back to sleep soon

icklekid · 30/04/2014 03:09

Gosh blue thats really scary about the cars along your street- think insurance companies need to be made aware as they could do a lot of damage even if nothing to take! Angry
Sorry to hear about your teeth fingers crossed the dentist can do something tomorrow even if only pain relief. ..

So fed up of being awake right now!

jbiscuits · 30/04/2014 07:45

Hope those of you who were awake in the early hours managed to get back to sleep eventually. I was awake in the night because of heartburn (and then of course baby woke up for a good wriggle). Anyone got any recommendations on what's best to take for it?

AuntieMaggie · 30/04/2014 08:03

jbiscuits I'm taking something called magnesium trisilicate for heartburn/indigestion... its runnier than gaviscon and you mix a spoonful with water... doesn't taste great but it knocks it on the head. If you can't get a prescription from mw/gp try talking to a pharmacist? In the meantime try drink a can of coke or glass of milk. I sometimes find its worse if I've got an empty stomach so perhaps try eating something.

AuntieMaggie · 30/04/2014 08:15

Thank you ladies

blue hope you get something sorted today

I've hardly slept between crying and being in pain and angry with dp as he promised to tidy up ready for a home visit today and as of 10 last night he hadn't done anything except put the curtains back up. I then spent an hour moving stuff and tidying up and this morning I still have to vacuum and mop the floors. I honestly don't know whats wrong with him at the moment but he's really getting on my nerves. He's been really stroppy the past few days so we've been arguing but he says its because I'm being stroppy. Argh.

BlueC2 · 30/04/2014 08:36

Oh Maggie I'm so sorry. Do try not to push yourself too much though. Sending big (virtual and germ free!) hugs to you!

biscuits either pop to your local pharmacy and pick up some gaviscon liquid or tablets or see your GP-you can get it on prescription to worth taking advantage of that as it'll be free for you! They've prescribed Peptac liquid for me this time though it tastes the same as gaviscon!

Not entirely sure how I got any sleep last night-pain is of the toe curling excruciating variety and I'm sure I've od'd on paracetamol!

mixi82 · 30/04/2014 09:20

biscuits i've tried everything but what seems to work best are Remegels. They're like minty chewits so don't taste bad or feel chalky in your mouth. Work really fast too. I found though, I've not had much heartburn if I have something fizzy during or after a meal. I think it must help with easing the acid and helps you to bring up any excess wind.

thanks Home about the movements thing, I just needed to get an idea of what I should be looking for as MW's haven't been particularly clear, just said I didn't need to worry yet. Most of baby's movements have been regular at the same times everyday for the last few weeks but on Monday, baby turned so I'm getting lots of jabs and kicks further down whereas I used to get them mostly all on my right side. When I say further down, I mean RIGHT down so can be a tad uncomfy!! I'm just glad not to have a foot embedded in ribs for a change :)

Plateofcrumbs · 30/04/2014 09:24

Blue I don't know how I would have coped with sinusitis in the past without being able to OD on ibuprofen and sudafed. I don't suppose paracetamol does much, you have my sympathy. Sad

Picked up the buggy last night, other than being in need of a new set of tyres all looks in good nick and has all the bells and whistles (cosytoes, parasol, bags, blankets, raincovers, maxicosi adaptors etc). Bargain! However it is downright scary having such a massive BABY item in the house - I've bundled it into a corner and am trying to deny it is there and that I will ever need it.

Engaging with the issue just long enough to ask a practical question: should I get a new mattress for the buggy's carrycot? I'm presuming yes? Lining and covers are washable and obviously I'll give the whole thing a good wipe over before use.

Which also reminds me - do people still use Milton? When I was growing up the 'milton cloth' (a j-cloth doused in milton solution) was in constant use for sticky hands and faces, wiping up, etc. Is this terribly retro?

ZingWatermelon · 30/04/2014 09:59

biscuits

just realised about your sad news - so sorry to hearSad Thanks

Blue

my only suggestion is to try a saline nose spray to loosen mucus - steam inhalation doesn't always work, in fact in my family it tends to make things worse.

sorry to hear about everyone's troubles, group hug's in order!Smile

I have had a good night sleep for once and no kids this morning so must get on.

hope everyone's day improves.
I love you all very much you know

Thanks zing

Thanks everyone for the heartburn tips. I've never really had heartburn before being pregnant so this is all new and painful to me. I've tried milk and eating something, but it seems like half the time it's caused by having an empty stomach and half the time by eating too much, and I keep guessing the wrong way round and making it worse! I'm seeing the midwife this afternoon so will ask her advice.

Sorry you're feeling rotten blue. Hope you start feeling better soon!

mixi82 · 30/04/2014 11:33

biscuits I never had heartburn before being preg but I know it makes you feel like you have an empty stomach and you feel hungry, but it's just the build up of acid making you feel that way. i'd try doing the fizzy drink thing for now, even if it's just fizzy water and see if it helps to ease off.

Blue i had sinisitus early on in my preg and it was awful so know how you feel, especially with not being able to take anything other than paracetemol. the best thing that worked for me, to help getting to sleep anyway, was to sleep slightly propped up and put vicks on my chest and neck and..........my feet!! the feet thing worked a treat :)

also, try getting some of that 4Head stuff, I found just swiping that across my forehead before i settled down(and even at work)helped to relief symptoms for about 20-30mins

BlueC2 · 30/04/2014 11:46

Thanks everyone...doc wasn't all that sympathetic but prescribed amoxicillin which is generally useless but I may take it anyway and see if it does something to clear it...just the pain is unreal!! Poor DH it's his birthday today and we were supposed to be going out tonight which clearly isn't going to happen now. Thankfully he's got today and rest of the week off so he can help with DS but not quite how he'd planned to spend his birthday!! zing DH has one of those saline nasal clearing contraptions so I may give that a go later...and I've got a saline nasal spray which I got for DS so will give that a whirl too ... mixi I put Vicks on DS feet when he has a cold so will try on mine too :) Basically willing to try anything that might help!!

plate glad the buggy seems ok! I remember when ours arrived before DS was born...it seemed huge and quite scary! Teatree oil is also quite good for cleaning things like that...diluted obviously but it's got great antiseptic properties. Milton still around though must say I've never used it. If you do buy Teatree oil then it's great (mixed with a teaspoon of milk) in a bath post birth to help stitches and everything heal down below...I used to love my teatree baths after DS born!
