free I keep forgetting you are not in the UK are you Grin at you think too much, interesting that she says every 5 minutes as I had contrations every 3-4 minutes and I wasn't even in established labour, they weren't very strong at this stage, I have no idea how far apart they were when I was in established labour as I was high on gas and air, when are you due??

sweet how cute, animals are funny things, my furbaby was neurotic and highly strung, she is still neurotic but has calmed down alot, I am surprised at how patient she is with the fur pulling although I'm sure there will be scratches, yes BB does look alot like Barry, actually she looks alot like my BIL, ah the delightful drool, I didn't notice the first tooth and was caught by surprise with the second, I am now armed with everything possible for the next one, whenever that may be Hmm how is the weaning going??

sweetgrouch · 18/07/2014 21:46

buzz Interesting how guidelines are so different depending on where we are, I know we are considered to be in active labour when the contractions have been 5 mins apart for at least 1 hour.

MiniSweets is still all gums, I was late with teeth, so we might have another 6-7 months before one shows up. So far he loves all food, except eggs, and is still bfding as much as ever. I am going to try him on tomato tonight. It should be interesting Grin. He is not napping much during the day yet, but we are getting decent nights. How is BB taking to solids? What are your guidelines for weaning? I only ask because ours just changed dramatically.

Buzzybee123 · 18/07/2014 22:37

sweet she loves her bottle and the disgusting formula that is in it Hmm we have baby porridge in the morning then some sort of fruit and veg mush later in the day, I find it all a faff so we are not up to 3 meals a day yet, she can take it or leave it, so we take it slowly

here its just pureed fruit or veg until 6 months, there is a wide range of ready made mush and baby porridge etc to buy

at 6 months you can introduce dairy - full fat, wheat and meats here, nuts etc when they are 12 months due to allergies,

I think the general rule of thumb for the NHS is contractions need to be 3 mins apart lasting at least 60 seconds and you shouldn't be able to talk through them :)

So does he nap at all during the day, BB has a meltdown after 2 hours

sweetgrouch · 18/07/2014 23:48

Our guidelines are now whatever you want from 4 months on, just no honey until the age of 2 (risk of botulism). We have to space out introduction to figure out allergies (one new food every 2-3 days).

I'm sure Mini-Sweets would love formula too - he loves everything that passes his lips. He ate a full tomato today for supper.

We usually get 3 in now: one 15 minute and two 30 min. It is much better than the no naps I had for the first few months Smile

BB sounds like she is a wonderful sleeper.

OP posts:
Buzzybee123 · 19/07/2014 09:33

yay to whole tomato :) thats good going, silly question did you just cut up in chunks or puree it. So have you been giving him all sorts of stuff from 4 months mark, I find the mashing it up the annoying bit, I can't wait to just give her a bit of toast to gnaw on, yes honey, interesting about botulism isn't it.

ah interesting that they say that, NHS/NICE are a bit slow on the uptake so it could take awhile for them to make changes

napping is a nightmare BB does 4 x 30 minutes, would like her to do one long nap and 2 short, she has been a good sleeper but has also had mixed feed and formula, it is supposed to fill them up for longer so if we had been successful with the boob it might have been very different,

sweetgrouch · 19/07/2014 13:49

buzz - I use a handheld chopper for some items, like the tomato (a mini robot culinaire, the english term escapes me). I squash bananas, blueberries, etc with a fork. We're also no longer supposed to give perfectly smooth food, apparently it turns kids into picky eaters Hmm

I gave him a hunk of baguette yesterday Blush DH was terrified he'd choke.

I am waiting for a niece or nephew to be born in the fall, I bet the guidelines will have already changed by then - ours change with every new study Hmm

Buzzybee123 · 19/07/2014 14:37

ah interesting about the mush making them picky eaters, I shall cease with that then Grin

freedom2011 · 19/07/2014 15:07

Thanks so much sweet and buzz. I am due in 3 weeks and 4 days so mid august. I am loving your weaning talk. After long struggles it's so nice to see 10 plussers talking about normal baby stuff. Its hot today. Well over 30 degrees centigrade. We did a baby first aid course this week as neither of us have really been around newborns. Tiring in the heat but worth it just to feel a bit more confident. My epi-no has arrived. Will start using it at 37 weeks. Any experience with this?

Buzzybee123 · 19/07/2014 17:17

free wow you are so close now eeek, very exciting, I'm still chuckling at the doulas comments to you Grin one of the NCT girls got one but she was a bit slack with it, all you can do is give it a whirl :)

freedom2011 · 19/07/2014 21:12

Yes here they can be very direct. Midwife managed to nod politely through birth plan but couldn't resist saying look frankly this is a load of old nonsense. 1/2 of it is obvious and just common sense - dark room, no strangers, skin to skin, constant communication and the either half you just can't plan for.

buzz when you say slack, do you mean she didn't really practice with it, or is that the permanent effect it had in her undercarriage?

freedom2011 · 19/07/2014 21:14

euro thinking of you and centime x

Buzzybee123 · 19/07/2014 22:01

free lol I meant she was slack in using it, I haven't asked about her undercarriage but you have just reminded me to work on my kagels

seamermaid · 20/07/2014 08:32

Free you really don't have long now. I'm also looking at the epi-no. My doulas are big fans of it and recommended it to me. I'm still trying to get my head round to the idea. I don't much like the idea but I have read knowing what the feeling is like of having something that size in your lady tunnel can help dampen down the fears of childbirth. I will probably give it a go but I'm only 30 weeks so waiting a bit longer before ordering it. Pls let me know how it goes. Would love to learn from your experience.

Buzz + sweet. Loving your weaning talk. Will be coming to you ladies for advice. Grin

Buzzybee123 · 20/07/2014 15:42

oooh more babies on the way sea very exciting, I won't ask from advice from me I'm just making up as I go along, BB is thriving through so can't be all bad :)

sweetgrouch · 21/07/2014 18:17

sea- haha I don't know about advice from me. I am winging it right now Grin. I'm confident you will find your own rhythm with your baby.

free - LOL at the slack comment

you both will have to let me know how the epi-no goes.

OP posts:
Buzzybee123 · 21/07/2014 20:50

sweet thinking of using the epino for the next one Wink my blardy inlaws fed BB 2 lots of formula in one hour, thats 400mls Shock I think I need to write down every instruction for them Hmm

sweetgrouch · 21/07/2014 21:05

haha buzz I honestly don't know if we'll try to have a second. I am just trying to enjoy every moment with mini right now. But after passing a 9+ lber without damage I don't know if I'd need it for a second go? I really haven't thought about it.

400 mLs!? Poor BB must be stuffed to her eyeballs!

WittgensteinsBunny · 21/07/2014 21:08

Evening all,

Tis me p r i n c e s s with a new name, in case anyone is confused! Haven't been on here for aggeeees, glad to see that all the pregnancies are progressing well and that more 10 plusser babies are due imminently!

Quick waves to lemons, grouch, buzzy and mellow too :)

If you've been on the other thread, you'll already know my news but I got a bfp (quite unexpected) on Saturday, so baby bunny two is due end of March / beginning of April. So many things to be nervous about: the next few weeks, ms with a one year old, having a 21 month old toddler and a newborn, getting baby bunny 1 into her own bed and god-knows what we do about breastfeeding Confused

I thought I'd come and hang out here as the regular antenatal threads still seem like weird territory to me!

eurochick · 22/07/2014 09:27

I too am loving the normal baby chat. It is so nice to see after all we have been through. And how awesome to have the bunny here!

I'm really missing centime today. They don't like her being out from under the jaundice lights for more than 20 minutes a day so cuddle opportunities are very limited and I'm really feeling it now. I miss her so much.

Buzzybee123 · 22/07/2014 09:45

euro sorry about centime and the jaundice but it will only be for a little while then you'll be able to take her home and cuddle her all the time, how long do they think she will have to stay in for?? And what is her name :)

bunny congrats again

BB is having a good nosy out the window, ah like mother ,like daughter Wink not that my neighbours are interesting

freedom2011 · 22/07/2014 10:24

Welcome back hooray and congratulations bunny
euro sorry about the jaundice and missed cuddles. Wishing centime well. How is your recovering going? Are you in hospital? I am being very unproductive and lying around and sleeping. I should be getting my hospital bag packed, washing baby clothes etc. as I am 37 weeks tomorrow but seems pointless to do laundry when the rain is constant and nothing will dry I know I am cutting it fine.

MrFree is utterly miserable at the moment. Huge work pressure, leaving house at 7 am back at 9pm. As it's his business he can't even have words with his boss as he is the boss. I've said I'm going to need his support in the first couple of weeks and he just doesn't see how it's possible. He's worried about getting customer calls in those first weeks of customers shouting and then me shouting Don't You Dare Leave Me to deal with this newborn alone. I'm trying to be reasonable and say look we have no idea what state me and kid will be in, set a zero availability expectation, get your staff to filter everything and we'll play it by ear. I don't know whether to continue being reasonable and reassuring or more hard nosed. I feel like he's in a panic because he wants to be there for me and scared of letting me down rather than trying to manipulate a pass to work usual hours. Hoping that when he sees reality of birth and newborn he'll find strength to say no to non critical work issues.

Sorry for massive relationship board-esque post. Will probably get it deleted later.

eurochick · 22/07/2014 11:01

free my recovery has been amazing. I had the section at 9-10pm on Thursday. I was discharged at lunchtime on Saturday. The standard is 48 hours if all is going well, but as they moved the baby at noon on Saturday I got it brought forward. The pain hasn't been too bad. I had a very rough time the first night and reacted badly to some of the drugs - was feverish and throwing up (incredibly painful with an abdomen full of stitches) so from the next morning I declined anything but paracetamol and ibruprofen as I just couldn't risk feeling that bad again. It was sore but bearable, and infinitely preferable to the risk of throwing up again. Since I've been home, I've been getting very tired in the evenings and if I drop something it tends to stay where it falls, but otherwise I'm feeling pretty good. So the section itself was worse than I expected (and I expected it to be pretty bad) because of the spinal starting to wear off before they were done and my reaction to the drugs, but my recovery has been much better than I could have hoped for.

I'm sorry to hear about mr free's workload. Is there anyone else aaround to give you some support?

eurochick · 22/07/2014 11:14

oops, posted too soon.

buzz no name yet, but we have set ourselves a time limit of her being a week old...

The average stay for a 34 weeker is 1-3 weeks, but it obviously depends on how she does. We were told before hand that the biggest challenge would be feeding because in the womb if they are struggling to get nutrients they tend to "brain save" and direct what they are getting to the brain and away from the other stuff that should be developing then, such as the gut. At the moment she isn't keeping either breast milk or formula down well, so they are moving to intravenous feeds for a while.

minipie · 22/07/2014 11:25

Aw euro jaundice lights and no cuddles is tough. Hopefully she won't be in there for long. I think DD had to have 3 sessions (we used to call it rotisserie chicken time), each felt like a real blow but it was shorter each time. I like to think they still know you are there and can hear you even whilst they are under the lights... Hope the expressing is going well.

freedom2011 · 22/07/2014 15:23

euro so glad to hear your recovery is going well so far although the spinal wearing off sounds horrendous. well done on getting through it. Are you able to get any sleep? fingers crossed she'll be out of special care and you'll be able to hold her and feed her soon.

I have only have one local friend I feel I could ask, but as they have just started IVF, and are at that really tough 1.5-2 year stage of TTC, I feel it would be rather insensitive to ask her to help me with a newborn. My in laws are about an hour away. But are getting on a bit so can't come in for a day then go home again as the drive knackers them. Kind as they are, I'm don't think I can deal with overnight visitors in the first weeks and my MIL who would actually be the one helping has just hurt herself. If it is really necessary, I'll hire someone but tbh I don't care about mess, I'm just worried that if I don't get enough rest I'll be a danger to myself and the child. However, some women have to do this completely alone and I'm sure that MrFree won't be permanently absent. And the midwife will come round regularly to make sure I am getting to grips with things. I'm going to do some batch cooking for the freezer.
