Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MrsVDB · 08/02/2014 16:54

Good luck angel I second taking the epidural ASAP. I thought I could cope without but I was having 5/6 contractions in 10 minutes with just the gel must write up birth story! and the epidural changed the experience for me so much

Angelesque · 08/02/2014 16:54

Felix thanks for advice - really hoping prostin gets things going; really don't want a drip!!! In induction bay now awaiting exam and first gel dose...

Angelesque · 08/02/2014 16:56

Aha - thanks Humpty and MrsVDB - really good to know that even just the gel can ramp things up that much. Where is the f-ing gas and air?!!!!

MrsVDB · 08/02/2014 17:32

Ok my birth story....

Went in for induction at 9am on sunday didn't get the gel in until 12.30pm and was 0cm dilated. Not a great deal was happening so bounced on the ball a bit, went for a wander and sneaked out to go collect our pram and went home to put it together. It was while we were at home I started to feel a bit of pain. Went back to the hospital at about 5.30pm and pretended we had been walking around the hospital

They put me on the monitor again at 6.30pm and as I was contracting every 4/5 minutes they wouldn't let me have the 2nd gel and I was told to either go into labour over night or they'd start the process again in the morning. Very frustrating as I was in no pain. They wouldn't examine me so don't know how dilated I was. We decided dh should go home as not much happening.

About 8.30pm I started getting tightenings every 2 minutes, not that painful but uncomfortable. Mentioned it to the midwife who put me back on the monitor and saw contractions were 5 every 10 minutes and quite strong. I was examined and Was less than 1cm dilated. They were worried I was contracting too much at this point. I was told I have high pain threshold as wasn't in pain really at all.

By 1.30am contractions still very regular and now painful so took paracetamol. By 2am I was 2cm and asked for gas and air. Called dh back at this point. The gas and air was doing nothing and when dh got back he realised the canister was off! No wonder I was in pain! They made the decision to move me to labour ward to pop my waters to relieve the pressure and hopefully get me dilating.

Went to labour ward at 3am as couldn't go to birth centre after having gel even though they said I could when id asked before. Was told I could have water birth on labour ward however when I got up there was told the pool was broken so couldn't use it even though they'd put me in that room :( begged for pethodine at this stage even though had said I didn't want it before. Pethodine did nothing. They then failed to pop my waters as cervix still high and 2cm. Head midwife came and had a go and I screamed the hospital down meaning 4 midwives came running in to see who was being murdered. She managed to.

Awful pain for next few hours with 5/6 contractions every 10 minutes but still not dilating. Got the epidural 3rd attempt eek at 12.30 pm while still only 4cm. Really eased the pain and still contracting strongly but got a few hours sleep.

Examined at 9pm and still 4cm with 'insignificant' meconium. Given the choice to caesarean or wait to see what happens in next 2 hours. Given no progress all day decided to have caesarean. Baby delivered at 11.34pm weighing a massive 10lb 4oz and 39cm head which is probably why I wasn't dilating as he just wouldn't fit down.

Lost 900ml blood and went into shock so dh held baby for first couple of hours while I recovered.

Long labour but definitely worth it :)

Pidgy · 08/02/2014 19:22

Mrsv sounds long and painful and good on you for insisting on the pain relief. What a big baby! Lucky you opted for the section too by the sounds of it.

Percy yes, that first week when my nipples were cracked I couldn't understand why when I went into our cold kitchen they REALLY hurt..then the penny dropped it was from 'smuggling peanuts'!

Hope I get more sleep tonight as really snapped at DS for spilling a can of coke on the table and rug. It wasn't really his fault but stupid DH (who leaves a can or drink low down with a toddler about?!). Temper is v short and I felt terriblefor shouting. :-(

Pidgy · 08/02/2014 19:24

Good luck Angel. Won't be long now!

Bluecarrot · 08/02/2014 20:01

Congrats mrsv! Had a similar sized baby (11lbs) so glad I ended up with CS in the end too!

angel will be thinking about you tonight!

Can't believe almost everyone has popped now! Did I miss the start of the postnatal thread? I can't keep up!

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 08/02/2014 20:38

Blimey mrsv good thing you had the CS! I wish I had stitches still aching

pidgy I'm sure he won't remember. And your DH might remember not to be so careless.

Angelesque · 08/02/2014 20:50

Quick update - still on induction bay, hopefully being moved to delivery suite very shortly (which will also mean DH doesn't have to go home). Have dilated to 4cm so things are moving in the right direction - fingers crossed x 1,000,000 we get to have our baby tomorrow!

Can't wait to join you all in the land of sleep deprivation and cracked nipples don't remind me I said that in a few days

MrsVDB · 08/02/2014 20:58

Great news angel good luck :) 4cm before labour ward is good going :)

fryingpantoface · 08/02/2014 21:23

Good news Angel!

best of luck

AnotherStitchInTime · 08/02/2014 21:52

Good luck Angel my due date buddy, hope you are holding your squishy newborn soon x

Naturegirl82 · 08/02/2014 21:56

Good luck angel

We made it to London and back despite the bad weather. Olivia was a dream in the car and slept, and managed to time our stop just right to feed and change her. Funeral went as well as could be expected. Was hard with my parents not being there though. But it was good to see the rest of my family and to introduce Olivia to them.

We discovered the miracle that is white noise though! I had downloaded an app just in case and the few times Olivia started to cry I turned it on and she fell asleep within a minute! Amazing! Smile

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 08/02/2014 23:06

nature glad it went okay. Was thinking of you. Well done Olivia!

angel good work! Have you had any pain relief? Don't be shy about asking, they don't offer. Good luck!

Pidgy · 09/02/2014 00:12

Thinking of you angel.

Thanks humpty. I'm hoping he won't remember. He looked so sad tho poor little mite. Horrid mummy.

BuntCadger · 09/02/2014 00:33

pidgy - I've been a bit shouty too and I went ape shit at dh today Blush . However Zachary finally Let me have 15 min peace so I wrote ds2 and dd little letters for them to read on morning with little drawings on. ds2 was saying good morning and I loved him and he can play his fav computer game for an hour after breakfast and dd the same except she can do painting (she's 2). I drew hearts and smiley sun's on them. It's hard cos we can't give them the same attention when looking after newborns but remember when they we newborns they had undivided attention too xx

BuntCadger · 09/02/2014 00:34

Angel I hope you are snuggling your newborn xx

Pidgy · 09/02/2014 01:06

Aww Bunt, smiling at the thought of your children reading their letters tomorrow morning. :-)

Still trying to settle Lara. The last 'sneak into the basket' didn't work! I'm not completely addicted to mumsnet, honest! It does pass the time at night and keep me from drooping off whilst holding her.

Angelesque · 09/02/2014 08:23

Still on induction ward... No gel as I'd dilated to 4 without it. No exams since then - really want to know if I've dilated any further... Hopefully getting waters broken today. This is all so slow...

Sultanajo · 09/02/2014 09:24

Just caught up and forgotten most...

Great to hear about all the Henry's (slightly biased as my Henry snoozes on me making cute noises!)

Huge congratulations mrsv! Definitely sounds as though Caesar was the right way to go in the end...

Good luck angel! You have the patience of a saint!

felix will be really interested to hear your update re struggling to pass soft motions. Henry has been exclusively on formula for a week after slowly weaning him over the previous week and is doing similar things. He has always seemed to get upset when it comes to passing motions, even on breast milk, but it has definitely ramped up since being on formula and he has several long attempts throughout the day before finally producing something generally early afternoon. A couple of motions this week have been really formed (could still squish them) and hv said similar things to me, such as he is getting used to his bowels working in a different way and if you can squish his motions then he isn't constipated.... Am using infacol with every feed still. I hate seeing him so upset.... Just monitoring closely and like humpty I am on poo watch every day and stress out until he finally passes one!

Henry also cluster feeds afternoons and evenings and at just under 6 weeks is starting to fight naps and getting overtired. On the plus side (and it's a huge plus side) he is an amazing night sleeper (hoping doesn't jinx self now....!) although last night his snot came back so this morning he has slept on me again as I couldn't listen to him struggle!

Arghhh Toby! I feel for you with the marathon feeding/pacing....

Sorry for everyone else I have missed... Henry has woken and is upset about something so off to work out what.....

enormouse · 09/02/2014 09:38

Good luck angel. It'll be worth it.

MrsV you were really brave to get through that. Congratulations on your little bundle.

pidgy I snapped at ds too. It's hard doing it with more than 1. He was messing about with his dinner and not eating it so I just snapped in annoyance. I felt terrible afterwards.

I'm having talks with my lecturers and I might be able to go back part time at the end of feb (beginning of new half term). I may have to take Cal with me but that's an issue that needs ironed out. Hopefully it'll be ok as one lecture is in the evening.

I'm going to need a huge bag to transport my laptop, and files and Cals stuff in and out of college if it works out.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 09/02/2014 09:53

angel how is it going pain wise? If they break your waters, it may be worth asking for anything like epi/pethidine before that as it can ramp things up.

sultana welcome to poowatch! It's odd how they struggle with such soft poos, eh? I can understand the 'unused to that muscle' argument, but when/how do they learn?

Today we have tried tights and a dress for the first time. Sleep suits are easier... Shock

MrsVDB · 09/02/2014 10:42

Good luck angel

humpty I keep looking at all the cute outfits I've bought but apart from his England rugby top for the match yesterday (far too big but v cute!) Henry has been in exclusively sleepsuits too

Felix90 · 09/02/2014 10:46

Good luck angel!

Yes I never thought I'd be so happy to see a dirty nappy! She cried on and off last night and had lots of episodes of pushing and didn't get very far Sad kicked DP at 6am to wake him up to feed her as I was exhausted and he took her downstairs (which means he will be complaining about being exhausted all day even though he's had 7 hours undisturbed sleep...).

Humpty I have so many cute outfits for Sylvie but she's always in babygrows as it's too much hassle to dress her in anything else. Whose idea was it to put teeny tiny buttons on the back of baby clothes?! They will be the death of me Shock

MrsVDB · 09/02/2014 10:54

felix I'm with you on the buttons, I'd read people say what a pain they are but never thought to check what I was buying. It seems nearly all gap clothes have buttons!!
