Hi everyone- haven't been here for ages, but this thread came up on active and thought id have a nosey.

  • what fantastic news- I'm thrilled for you- not sure if you remember me but we we're posting on a ttc thread back about 18 months ago. (Cripes, where has the time gone!?!) I'm chuffed to bits for you- fingers crossed for a smooth few months!

All is well with me- my son, Peter, is now 8 months old and he's utterly divine x

Alexandra6 · 27/12/2013 17:00

Oh thank god winkle what a relief, bet you were terrified. I remember all too well the horrible anxiety around the stage you're at and the blood must have shaken you up. I have heard other people bleed in pregnancy (I was admitted to hospital for a red bleed at 38 weeks and they never found out why). Doesn't make it any easier to know that it's quite common when you're scared something is going wrong. Am really glad they scanned you and all's ok.

red and thingy I'm excited for you! It's so annoying when people say this but enjoy the last part of your pregnancy and get in some lie ins if you can!

I've been coping better and had a lovely first Christmas with Sophia - I think I had some kind of hormone crash as I was struggling quite a bit with everything, but I'm getting more used to looking after a newborn now. I'm absolutely besotted with her, she's just gorgeous, but I was finding it so tough when she cried or wouldn't sleep. Breast feeding is going a million times better now, much less pain. She still seems to be getting lots of wind/reflux but am trying to wind her well and not let any tears/screams affect me. I'm also hoping it isn't serious reflux or colic and won't develop into that.

What sort of hours of sleeping/crying/being awake do you think should expect with a newborn? And how does that change over the first few months?

twinklestar2 · 27/12/2013 17:39

Wishful, of course I remember you! You started the original BFP in 2012 thread! So nice to hear from you and hear that all is well.

Thingy and Alex - the nurse said it's blood vessels in the uterus that can burst esp as I'm on extra progesterone which softens everything in there.

Hope you're all having a lovely break with your families.

kittykatsforever · 27/12/2013 18:39

Glad to hear all is well twinkle and you got a reasurring scan, I bled 4 times with the last pregnancy, it got abit easier after the one at 14wks as I expected them more then but not nice but very very common!
Wishful lovely to hear you and Peter is well, 8 months!! When will you be back at work or are you staying off?

Not long now red! Any more signs?

Glad to hear you are doing better Alex the newborn stage is such a roller coaster particulally if it's your first, for the first 3 months it is almost anything goes, they can hate being naked baths/ nappy changes or love it, sleep varies but in the night at first I'd expect them to want feeding every 3/4 hours, in the day I would wake her every 3 for food even if she's sleeping as this encourages them to have longer at night, they should be sleeping aprox 17hours aday hth

RedRobin1 · 27/12/2013 21:52

Hi wishful so good to hear from you! Ofcourse we remember you Smile your son is 8 months old wow! Time flies...

Sophia is a lovely name alex hope you have some easy nights soon. How are you otherwise?

No signs of baby robin making a move apart from some mild period pains in the evenings. DH has been prodding it all day today to make an appearance as he's bored and impatient :/

I have had 3 days of respite from cervix headbutts and sciatica and I am so thankful for it Smile

twinkle you must have been terrified. So glad it's all good news.

wishful good to hear from you. Peter is a lovely name glad all is well.

alex those pesky hormones can be a nightmare. Really glad you are feeling better. Don't really have any advice re newborn sleeping my dd only slept through at 2 1/2 years so you are best not taking my advice anyway.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 27/12/2013 23:47

Oh and a special emanation to thingy for braving the ikea sales. You must be crazy, I love ikea but there's no way I could have coped with the sales at 34 weeks.

RedRobin1 · 28/12/2013 13:48

How you doing twinkle?

OP posts:
twinklestar2 · 28/12/2013 22:13

I'm ok red, just taking it easy. How u doing?

RedRobin1 · 29/12/2013 06:05

I'm fine twinkle but up at 6am with insomnia Smile

Quick question - Did you guys have heating on all night in the first few weeks with newborn for those who had winter babies? I can't sleep if the bedroom gets too hot but at the same time I don't want baby to be too cold.

Ok I'll have a google and then try and get some sleep. Weird how these thoughts keep you awake at night!

OP posts:
Alexandra6 · 29/12/2013 07:21

red they say the ideal temp for the room is around 18 degrees (SIDS guidelines) which is actually quite cool so you don't need the heating on all night. Which is a shame for me as I love being warm so would happily leave the heating on and I think it's easier to be sleepy in a hot room! A friend got me a little floating thermometer that measures the room temp and bath temp. I also have a fancy angel care sensor and monitor which I think has the temp but I haven't worked out how to use it yet! Confused

Alexandra6 · 29/12/2013 07:39

Oh and by the way, the cutest thing about a newborn for me is the way they curl up on you with little frogs legs Smile Mine's doing that at the moment. She's been up every couple of hours for a feed and nappy but she managed to sleep in between so I'm happy! Last night she had really bad wind and that was tough, crying for aaaages!

kittykatsforever · 29/12/2013 08:52

Red Alex is right, our baby's room drops too cold in the night down to 13/14 if the heating isn't on but what I do is set it so it's not on but will come on if it drops below a certain temp and turn down the radiators in our bedroom as I'm the same as you and don't like it too hot in bed

MrsBri · 29/12/2013 09:15

Oh my god...I've just found this thread and want to say huge huge huge congratulations to winkle. I often wondered how you were getting on and I'm so bloody pleased for you.

I hope you've got over the shock of seeing blood. It's scary when that happens.

I'm honestly over the moon for you. :-) xx

Congrats to Alex too on the birth of Sophia. Beautiful name.

Red, I'm excited for you too!

I should probably pop in more often, I've been slack. :-/

Amy was 6 months old just before Christmas and is such a lovely baby. She's struggling with teething and was diagnosed lactose intolerant, but is doing really well. :-)

I'll stick this thread in my favourites now so I can keep up with the news!

MrsBri · 29/12/2013 09:18

On the heating front ours comes on for two hours every six hours, so 8-10, 2-4, 8-10 and 2-4. This keeps the house between 17-20 degrees constantly. It would get too cold if I didn't do that.

It's more than we would have if alone, but doesn't see too excessive.

MrsBri · 29/12/2013 09:26

Triple post...but oh my god, Thunder is pregnant too. I'm do so happy. :-)

I've missed so much. I was generally lurking though as I had to name change due to being outed under this name by somebody MiL knows.

RedRobin1 · 29/12/2013 14:53

Hiiiii nic how you been! So lovely I hear from you. Did Amy have a good first Christmas?

I guess we could leave the heating off at night and just turn it on when it gets to freezing cold temps. And yes good idea about turning the radiators down in the room if it's on overnight.

OP posts:
MrsBri · 29/12/2013 14:58

She had a lovely first Christmas, thank you. Totally and utterly spoilt and slightly bewildered as to what on earth was going on, but she behaved perfectly and it was a brilliant day. :-)

If we had a thermostat we'd just set the heating to come on when the house got to below 17, but it's a crappy system so it's just on or off, with rad valves (so we turn our room down now Amy's in her own room).

You'll know what's best in your house to keep the room that baby's in warm enough.

Bet you can't wait for newborn snuggles!

Alexandra6 · 29/12/2013 16:52

Ah, lovely to have an update on Amy! Smile Glad she had a nice Christmas. How did you find out she was lactose intolerant? Only asking as I wondered about that with Sophia. Have been avoiding dairy as I heard dairy can cause colicky/refluxy/wind issues and Sophia has seemed to get that and had a couple of really bad nights.

MrsBri · 29/12/2013 17:50

Alex, it was a slow process.

Basically she started to eat less and less, she'd take ages over a feed and would take 2 hours to eat barely anything and in the end went for screaming refusal of food.

We took her to paed A&E when we decided it wasn't fair on her to suffer like it (the GP hadn't wanted to consider intolerance). The doctor there was wonderful and was willing to try the lactose free formula, which made her a brand new baby within a few feeds.

We think it was brought on by antibiotics at 4 weeks' old, but aren't sure. The most common intolerance is cows' milk protein.

Amy was an awful sleeper til we changed her milk. She's not perfect now, but far far better than she was.

I hope you get some answers soon. xx
