I read loads of books last time round, but am staying away this time (even though this time I am more stressed out I think).

One and a half days of school left! I have to start packing....

jaykay987 · 18/12/2013 12:19

I'm on my way to my nuchal. Bit scared as I hate hospitals....and I'm on my own :-(

hi Disney!!!! That's very exciting! Congratulations!

DisneyDiva87 · 18/12/2013 12:31

Thanks jaykay. Sorry for crashing the thread but wanted to let gilly know since we were on conception boards a lot together Smile

I've peed 4 times already today. Maybe this is real!

wispaxmas · 18/12/2013 12:33

Mylittel, get 'Expecting Better,'. It explains the reasons and science behind things very clearly, and debunks a lot of pregnancy myths. Very helpful.

Riblet · 18/12/2013 13:02

Oh yes, Expecting Better is definitely worth a read- I may get it back out of the library as although a lot of it covers the early stages it does go right up to birth.

mylittlel · 18/12/2013 13:11

what about books which are more about newborns and obviously what to do with them? apologies if i my sound clueless, but i am)

Bumblebeesmum · 18/12/2013 13:12

Emma you CYCLED TO HOSPITAL TO GIVE BIRTH?!?!

Wow I could barely walk!!!

misshoohaa · 18/12/2013 13:12

Running? sarah I'm impressed you are doing any exercise, I'm being such a sloth!

Scan was great, the little one was wriggling around everywhere! I had to do half a wee during the scan as my bladder was too full! Whoops, went a bit over board with the water drinking. Got some sweet pictures and we were in there a while, I think the sonographer was new, and even though it was only a dating scan she looked at the little bean from lots of angles and had a good check and saw stomach, kidneys etc.

How's you go drama?

I read a book called active labour when pregnant with DS and helped reinforce some fairly simple concepts about using gravity and tying to avoid, lying on your back during labour, I also watched that Ricki Lake documentary, not sure what it was called but I think that had some good messages about trying to be active during labour! Also highlighted how pleased I am not too live in the US, what a horrid maternity system!

Congratulations miss. At my scan she also checked everything and had a checklist to fill in showing she had seen everything so I think it is standard.

Newborn books are a bit hit and miss. I had some which really made things worse. And some were vaguely helpful. Things that I wish I had known from the start is that some babies mine don't know how to sleep so if they are fed and dry and still whinging constantly chances are they are overtired and whacking them in a pram or sling or rocking them really helps. I think they are "supposed" to only be awake for about 30 minutes at a time for the first few weeks and asleep for an hour or two at a time. My dd would wake after 45 mins (you could set a clock!) but was still tired and I wish I had known to just rock her back to sleep again.

Sorry that was an essay!!!

Bumblebeesmum · 18/12/2013 13:41

I'd read quite a bit about staying active in labour etc & I was almost looking forward to a water birth in the local birth unit but my 1st labour didn't to to plan. I had low BP all way through & then suddenly in last week it rocketed & protein so I was induced in hospital, then after a couple of days of contractions on a ward with people's visitors & being woken up every hour to have BP checked, because I wasn't in active labour I had to have waters broken & a drip & no choice but to stay on my back (the urge to get up was so strong). The whole thing was 4 days

I don't want to scare 1st timers - the pain was far less than I'd dreaded (& my god was pethidine fun!!) & despite forceps I had no tears no stitches & was home after 1 night - but I can't help but feel I've missed out & want a 'normal' labour this time. Going in to labour at home and all that stuff - not on a ward where they send husband home when visitor hours finish. Oh well I know what will be will be but it makes reading about options & active births give me quite mixed feelings. I really hope that doesn't worry anyone - I promise the fear of labour is 100x worse than the event.

Bumblebeesmum · 18/12/2013 13:43

Marlena - I am very pleased that 'chances are they are overtired and whacking them...' went a different direction to how I'd 1st read it!!!

Mitchell2 · 18/12/2013 14:06

Hi ladies, pleased to hear that the scans have gone well and um am with Bumble Emmazers - cycling to hospital?! Very very impressed. Actually I read up on the fact that dutch women often cycle a few miles in labour to the hospital. Its quite inspiring. My local is 3 miles away and I joked after reading about this to my husband that maybe we could Boris Bike it there - he looked at me like I was bonkers.

So, is anyone not feeling pregnant anymore? I am getting the fear that something has gone wrong. My nausea is subsiding, I am still mega tired but I think that its a combination of jet lag AND working stupid hour days. And I although I have a bump i fear its bloat again rather than baby (it certainly looks and feels like bloat and fat!).

Am 14+2 today and wondering when I am actually going to start to 'feel' her. As a first timer I am totally clueless.... is this normal?!

BaldHedgehog · 18/12/2013 14:07

Hello folks, can I join you?Was watchig the thread(s)but it's very difficult to keep up with you chatty lot!
Expecting DC2,EDD is 24th of June, had a scan last Friday and apparently everything's fine (fingers crossed it will stay this way).I didn't want to join earlier just in case of mc-I'm not a spring chicken and that's how my 1st pregnancy finished.

MarlenaGru · 18/12/2013 14:13

Lol! Punctuation would help Grin

MarlenaGru · 18/12/2013 14:16

Sounds normal mitchell I felt DD after 20 weeks last time and feeling less sick and less tired is a good thing (and to be expected as the placenta helps out with the hard work around week 13! I still feel a bit bleurgh and have very tired days but mostly feeling so much better.

MinaLeeds · 18/12/2013 14:57

I've been having a horrid time of things. I have my second midwife's appointment tomorrow and in the meantime have managed to work myself into a total tizzy with regards to baby. I keep having horrible dreams and it's leaving me more and more stressed out. :( This motherhood lark is no joke. I'm now unable to sleep on my tummy as I'm starting to feel uncomfortable, my back is KILLING me so I can't lie on my back any more without being unable to move easily afterwards, and now I find out I'm only supposed to sleep on my left hand side because it's best for baby. That sound you just heard? That was me throwing my toys out of the pram. I think they might be in Devon somewhere. :(

Riblet · 18/12/2013 15:12

Sorry to hear your having a bad time Mina. Is there anything you can do to support your back, pillows or something? I might try this tonight as was tossing and turning with back pain and general discomfort too last night. Also, I thought I read the left side thing was suggested but not essential, so if you're more comfortable sleeping on you right then go for it (personally I can't see myself being able to stay in one position all night, at least not without being as stiff as a board in the morning).

Mitchell - another first timer here so no real experience but I definitely didn't feel pregnant for a while for all the reasons you describe, however now the bump is starting to come up a bit and the aches and pains have started it definitely feels real! Will just be at different times for different people. Also, the consultant who did my scan today said the babies were very active but I probably wouldn't feel it yet (am 15w today), and when I said I hadn't felt anything he said that's normal but I would soon, so I'm sure it won't be long until we start to get flutterings Smile

InTheBEEwitchedWinter · 18/12/2013 16:08

I'm sorry you're feeling rough Mina, I agree, try a maternity pillow and see how you get one. I sleep on my left side anyway, but love getting backrubs and lying on my tummy for those is starting to feel strange, and I get woozy on my back. I have the Dreamgenii and it's not bad, but I personally don't like sleeping with it.

I have a dear colleague from my last work that I am still in contact with, I emailed him ages ago to let him know we were moving and that I was pregnant and never heard back. Got a slightly short email yesterday sending Christmas wishes and assumed he hadn't received the original email, so I wrote today to let him know what was going and just got an email back.

Still no mention of him knowing that I'm preggers - he's either read over it or completely blanked me, grrrrr. Is 'congrats!' asking for too much?

On top of that I got a message from work, they thought I was coming back tomorrow, so I was panicking there.

I feel really useless at the moment.

Biffle · 18/12/2013 16:47

Just got back from scan and have got a VERY wriggly little one Grin

misshoohaa · 18/12/2013 16:57

Congrats Biffle! I can't believe how much they move around inside and we've got no idea (yet) the little party they're having in there!

MarlenaGru · 18/12/2013 17:10

Congratulations biffle

LadyGoneGaga · 18/12/2013 17:49

So my bloods have come back as high risk for Down's (despite the nuchal all looking good last week). 1 in 95, high enough to worry. Hospital have offered CVS but have decided to decline and going for the Harmony privately instead. So that's on Monday at the FMC. What a lovely pre-Christmas headfuck. Feeling so worried. And a proper knob because I've told the children, most of my colleagues, all of the family. Sad So, so hoping everything is ok.

Apparently the worst bit of the bloods is that HcG levels are 5x normal. Accounts for me feeling utterly shit compared to previous pregnancies at least.

Sorry for being me, me, me. I need to read back and see how you're all doing.

summerbaby2014 · 18/12/2013 17:53

Lady- I'm really sorry to hear this. I think harmony is a good option and I'll keep my fingers crossed that it all works out. If the nuchal was ok that must be a good sign.
Don't worry about people you've told just try and use Christmas as a distraction while you wait for the results.
Keep us updated x

Mitchell2 · 18/12/2013 17:55

Oh lady - there are no words but support and fingers and toes that everything is ok.

InTheBEEwitchedWinter · 18/12/2013 18:03

Lady I am so sorry you are having this worry, please be as me me me as you need to be. Hopefully you'll get the Harmony results as soon as possible - just try and enjoy Christmas with your other two DCs.
