Congratulations MrsCharlieD! Glad it went well Smile

SarahAnderson · 06/12/2013 08:27

So I've been asked if I want a student midwife to take me on as part of her caseload! She'll come to as many of my appointments as she can, and attend the birth.

I said yes immediately -- after all, they have to learn somehow.

She is VERY new, a first year. As my husband said yesterday she appears to have been a trainee midwife less time than I've been pregnant!

Anyone had any experiences, good or bad, with student midwives?

BEEwitched · 06/12/2013 08:28

Gin, chestnut & mtmd, Best of luck for your scans, I'm looking forward to updates of your wriggling and kicking babies!

Redcliff · 06/12/2013 08:28

Great news Charlie and sending good wishes to all those having scans today.

Vickyvix · 06/12/2013 08:59

Great news MrsC :)

Good luck to all of today's scans!

ohcluttergotme · 06/12/2013 09:48

Chestnut my little bean got the hiccups too, so cute the whole body seemed to hiccup with them Smile

MinaLeeds · 06/12/2013 09:59

Good luck with your scans today gin, mtmd, chestnut and anyone else who has their scans today!

Wish my baby had got the hiccups. Or moved. She/he was lying facing down all cuddled up on top of their arms and legs. All I could see moving was the heartbeat. Because he/she was so well behaved, we were only in for about 10 minutes. DH got to see baby more than I did! But there's always the 20 week scan to look forward to and that one will have to be longer cos they're checking for more. I am going to have an awesome January. Get to spend most of it in Kenya being pampered by my mum, swimming in the pool and eating delicious tropical fruits. Then the day after I get back, I have my scan! Woop Woop!

MinaLeeds · 06/12/2013 10:01

To be fair...I don't know if I would have lasted much longer. I read my instructions wrong and had nearly 2 litres of water 1.5 hours before the scan when it was supposed to be 1.5 pints 1 hour before the scan. So I couldn't even move without being terrified that I was going to have an accident!

ohcluttergotme · 06/12/2013 10:08

Mina think I would take a month being pampered in Kenya and swimming in the pool over my baby having hiccups. The sonographer had me jumping around all over the place trying to get baby in right position and now got to go back as baby didn't want to do as he/she was told! Smile

BEEwitched · 06/12/2013 10:09

Oh Mina, I know what you mean - the sonographer phoned me the night before and said to start drinking water at 7 in the morning and keep on going for at least 2.5 pints, the scan was at quarter past 9. I nearly died.

PS: I have proper internet back, so no more garbled posting from my phone! Yay!

SicknSpan · 06/12/2013 10:27

Sarah I've had some fab experiences with student midwives. Ime they are much more attentive to detail than already qualified mw's, they check stuff out if they are unsure about things and most importantly really seem to care about you as a person, not just a giant hatching device with a serial number. Guess they haven't been institutionalised yet! Lucky you- think there was someone else on one of the previous threads who said that she had a student with her for much of her pregnancy and it was fab? Cant remember who though.

Still throwing up here loads :( but on the plus side got screening results back and there is just a 1:13000 chance that this baby has downs.

Think I felt it move yesterday- just a little flutter that I remember well rom ds1 and ds2. Still a bit early but I felt ds2 at 16 weeks and had an anterior placenta with him like someone else up thread, so not unthinkable that I would feel this one at 14+6. Wow, nearly 15 weeks already! 25 to go!

superlambanana · 06/12/2013 10:40

Oh my goodness I have a whole week and three days until my scan!! I don't know how I'll last that long!

wispaxmas · 06/12/2013 11:05

Sarah, I had a student midwife do my booking in and she was lovely. Everything she did was checked over by a qualified midiwfe but she'd done fine on her own. I assume that you will still have qualified midwives at your appointments to make sure the student is doing the right things, so I'd say you're lucky - extra attentiveness and you'll have the same person at all your appointments!

The scan went well! So relieved! There really is a baby in there! I thought I was 12 weeks today and the scan said 12 + 5, so I'm now due on June 15th.

It was so nice to see the baby, it kept moving its hands and was doing little wiggles with its whole body. Grin

GinandStripes · 06/12/2013 11:17

ooooh chestnut how lovely.

hackneybird · 06/12/2013 11:34

Lovely to hear all the good news on scans, and ada I'm really delighted for you.

eliza congrats on your pay rise. I negotiated one a little while back and it was a great feeling. I haven't read Lean In but I might put it on my Xmas list.

I'm off to a posh industry event today. Everyone always gets totally hammered but this year I'll be on the OJ. Haven't told work yet so hope I don't get rumbled. Not ready to fess up yet!

MarlenaGru · 06/12/2013 11:37

Congratulations chestnut

Riblet · 06/12/2013 12:15

How lovely MrsC and Chestnut, glad to hear the scans went well. Good luck to anyone else having theirs today.

Sarah - I had a trainee midwife sit in on my booking in and it made it a bit more relaxed as she was telling us about when she had her kids etc. She didn't actually do anything apart from blood pressure (the old fashioned way with stethoscope) - the MW had already done it but she did it as as well and they compared readings. She was quite far out with her reading, bless her, but everyone has to start somewhere. I don't know if she'll be with the same MW and if we'll see her again but will be lovely for you to have yours all the way through, plus you'll be getting lots of extra attention Smile We also had someone we thought was a trainee sonographer sitting in on our scan but it turns out she was a registrar, obviously learning to do ultrasounds although don't know why. She had a look after the sonographer had finished and it was fine but she did press a bit hard on my bladder! Because we helped with training we got a free scan picture and since its twins we ended up with 3 pics, so not a bad deal really Wink

Sicknspan - sorry to hear you're so ill but fab news on result plus feeling movements - WOW!

superlambanana · 06/12/2013 12:24

Bit gutted... Was going to see my grandma this weekend and tell her face to face but she is ill Sad Feel really sorry for her as she was looking forward to seeing our new house and we were looking forward to seeing her and telling her. Sod's flipping law!! I did tell her as I thought she needed cheering up. Still wanted to do it face to face though!

MTMD · 06/12/2013 12:35

Hi all!

Good scan today, wriggly baby and we got two pics for free!

Baby measuring 72mm so scan put it at 13+3 but sonographer decided to stick to calendar measurement at 12+4. She said it might just be a big baby. Personally I think my due date is somewhere in between the two because my cycle is 27 days :)

AND I told her I suspected a boy and she said "I think you are right, can't confirm it yet, but there's certain growth in between legs" hahahah! I knew it! DH's family men don't do xx, this will be boy no 7 over two generations (zero girls) :)

Riblet · 06/12/2013 12:59

Yay, glad all went well MTMD and LOL at the 'growth' Grin

LadyGoneGaga · 06/12/2013 13:46

Good news on the scans everyone Grin.

SarahAnderson I had a great experience in my last pregnancy with a trainee midwife. Like you, I was on her case load and so she followed me through the whole process from booking in, to consultants appointments, to my GTT and sweeps. And she was there at gthe birth and delivered my little girl which was fantastic. She even came out to do post-natal checks so it was really like having a private midwife. She was very caring and a final year student so quite experienced and obviously she was supervised. So was very, very happy.

When having my first though I had a trainee attend my home birth and she was a bit useless. Just sat there staring at me, never said a word. Found that a bit intrusive. But having the same one and getting to build a relationship with her was fantastic and sad I won't have that this time around.

SarahAnderson · 06/12/2013 13:58

The trainee midwife yesterday was VERY sweet and nice, but also quite scared (of me, partly, I think) and made a total hash of taking my blood pressure. I can’t imagine she would be any help at all at a birth right now… except that of course by June/July next year, she will have seen loads of births (they spend 50% of their time doing practical work and observations) so will hopefully be a lot more experienced than she was yesterday.

ohcluttergotme · 06/12/2013 15:26

Great news on positive scans today Smile

cjbk1 · 06/12/2013 16:12
