Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'm not taking anything that is borrowed - we plan to have at least one more baby after this one so unless we are gifted an item then we will buy new and store away for subsequent babies - the idea of keeping track of all the items seems too much to handle!

Blockette · 27/11/2013 14:42

Hi Chaffinch, welcome back.

Nothing to report here apart from being tired, and was sick again for the first time in ages :( my head hurts too, so it might just be head ache related and not baby related. Can't tell these days!

Going to have a moan as I'm not allowed to at home or risk being accused of picking on DH's mother. - We (DH and I) decided that as we can only fit one, we would go for draws instead of a wardrobe in the baby's room. - he spends an hour with his mother and comes home telling me they (DH and MIL) are going looking at wardrobes today!! - I know it's all her doing and I just want to scream at him! Luckily they didn't find anything they liked, so we will go back to looking another time.

  • Am I just being petty because MIL does my head in or will a wardrobe be better then draws? - it's my thinking that she won't wear many dresses until she walking as she will just be flashing herself all the time, so anything she does have before then can just go in mine or DH's wardrobe? She doesn't need one of her own?!
FoxMulder · 27/11/2013 15:16

I wouldn't have thought a baby needs a wardrobe. I wasn't planning on getting one.

Rockchick1984 · 27/11/2013 15:46

Block definitely drawers if you can only fit one in - most of the mums of girls I know buy some gorgeous pretty dresses while pregnant, then quickly realise its entirely impractical trying to deal with exploding nappies, sick etc while also contending with pastel coloured frilly dresses as they get ruined. Until she is toddling, things like that are better saved for special occasions - you definitely want drawers not a wardrobe. Also, better to buy proper furniture rather than baby as they quickly need more space so you would end up replacing cute "nursery furniture" very early on, even if you don't buy tons of outfits!

Blockette · 27/11/2013 15:52

Ohh didn't think of that rock but it makes a lot more sense to buy full size, now how to aim this at DH without sounding anti MIL ...

mrsksays · 27/11/2013 15:54

Oh God the dreaded baby shower has reared it's head!

2 of my friends have suggested that 4 of us have a joint one - however the due dates are Jan, March, April & May!

The person due in Jan seems to be full speed ahead with guestlist (wants her Mum and MIL to come) whilst the rest of us aren't bothered as we're not really at that stage yet.

Think we're politely asking to be counted out of the joint big event!

FoxMulder · 27/11/2013 15:54

We haven't even got around to getting our own furniture. I'm still using the plastic stuff from my student days! Baby has no hope.

It always seems a bit crazy money for what it is does furniture.

mrsksays · 27/11/2013 15:57

blockette I second drawers - what are you going to do - hang babygros and vests on hangers? I can only fit a small little chest of drawers in for now. I will buy more storage and and when we need it.

mrsksays · 27/11/2013 15:58

Fox We still have ikea furniture in our bedrooms - its only the living room we've upgraded to nice furniture and it cost a bloody fortune!

FoxMulder · 27/11/2013 16:21

Ikea furniture would be a step up for us! The bed/wardrobe/bedside tables and chest of drawers are all second hand. None of it matches and none of it is of the greatest quality. It would be amazing to go out and get a whole new matching set of everything. But that would probably cost £2K or something. You could go on the holiday of a lifetime for that.

FoxMulder · 27/11/2013 16:25

We do have a nice mattress though. And a nice sofa. Got to get your priorities sorted Grin. Oh well, I guess it's less for the baby to destroy.

BakingEating · 27/11/2013 16:28

Drawers make way more sense than a wardrobe. I think we'll be using a normal chest of drawers for most stuff. Can't see the point of a wardrobe. Perhaps MiL is trying to get pretty things instead of practical things, because she's not thinking about actually having to use them. Can't offer any advice on how to curb the MiL, mines so scared of me she refuses to visit. Must be something to do with my complete lack of a diplomacy gene.

On new vs borrowed, we'll get our own stuff because most if our friends are still using their stuff. Besides, I'm planning on getting cheap, plain babygros and cheap plain anything that won't be used for very long. No cute little dresses / football kits for this baby!

mrsksays · 27/11/2013 16:40

I think newborns and 0-3 months look the most adorable in their cute little onesies rather than in elaborate outfits anyway!

Blockette · 27/11/2013 16:41

baking want to come stay with us for a week then to sort out MIL? Grin

Our house is pretty much an ikea catalog! Lol - we are lazy decorators!

Blockette · 27/11/2013 16:44

Me too mrsk! But then I'm not very girly myself

mrsksays · 27/11/2013 17:20

One of the contributing factors for us staying team yellow was so we don't get loads of tutus and bloody football kits!

I'm envisioning our little one in bold primary colour stripes and polka dot babygros in the first few weeks/months. Not looking like a miniature adult.

Rockchick1984 · 27/11/2013 18:13

Link may not work as mobile website, but we have Ikea Malm drawers for DS and will just get another set for DD before she arrives. They do all different sizes, but are perfect for baby clothes - we used to have them sorted by clothes size when DS was tiny so as he outgrew things we could just move onto the next drawer!

liberuna · 27/11/2013 18:44

I agree mummy just cause he's being 40% less of a dick still makes him a dick.

Hi Chaffinch just jump in :)

Thanks for the advice guys. Exactly what I was afraid off. Can't afford any new stuff so taking anything I can get. But if i have to buy a replacement anyway I might as well get full use of a brand new item for myself.

imeg unless mw has said anything sounds like you're ok. My sweet tooth is going crazy trying to keep to fruit and honey (on everything) but can't help having sugar puffs/coco pops. And I still look quite small for 25 weeks

liberuna · 27/11/2013 18:55

Sorry phone playing up.

Re mil. Can you 3 talk about it at the same time? Seems like your dh is tooing and froing. Politely ask what are the reasons for her recommending a wardrobe yiu may be surprised. And if not, you can then counter with your reasons. Ie space, money, longevity. And ask her if you can put the next 5 years

liberuna · 27/11/2013 19:02

Of child's clothing in her house/wardrobe.

liberuna · 27/11/2013 19:06

Ikea? Ikea? (In best Yorkshire accent) we used to dream of Ikea. Been pickin furniture off t'street for years. My spice cabinet us held up by a computer table.
OH wants to spend savings on getting new furniture (ikea) but as you say if we actually kitted out the baby room it could go into thousands. Rather keep the money for emergency than furniture with such a short shelf life.

BakingEating · 27/11/2013 19:10

Blockette you might want that particular relationship intact in the next year or so, she'll save you in babysitting what she costs in furniture. But if not, hey happy to help! Grin

IceNoSlice · 27/11/2013 20:34

Agreed - drawers better than wardrobe.

MrsKay I'd be opting out of the baby shower too. Not my thing.

Re: baby clothes. I only bought simple plain or primary coloured vests and baby gros for DS. But family and friends were soooo kind and generous we did end up with loads of 'outfits' as well. And some of them were super cute, especially dungarees (actually pretty practical as they have poppers between the legs just like baby gros).

We didn't get any football kits though (that's not really our thing).

apprenticemamma · 27/11/2013 21:05

re furniture...only got a wardrobe when he was one...drawers all the way :)

re loaning clothes. .I've got a dim view of lending baby equipment and clothes as I lent a lot to my sister who has subsequently frozen me out of her life. I have texted her to get stuff back but no responseAngry . That's an extreme experience I guess but please don't make people beg to get their stuff back, it's shit!

OwlinaTree · 27/11/2013 22:20

Regarding furniture we got some of this as we only have a box room for the baby.

We got a tall unit and you can mix up drawers, baskets, shelves, hanging rail etc. We got lots of shelves to start with but also a rail so as the baby gets older we can take bits out to create hanging space. We were dead pleased as it made the best use of a narrow space.
