I got a sewing machine last year Jolls so am teaching myself to patchwork and quilt! I love to knit and have taught myself to crochet too.

I'm the same Ice. I am forever telling DH off for lack of punctuation in texts.

Jolleigh · 14/10/2013 23:43

Very crafty NoMaybe! I can't knit but did learn to crochet as a child. Craft wise, cooking is what I'm best at. I'm developing my baking skills (until this year I was shockingly bad). And other than that, I'm a bit of an all-rounder...took a fine art course for 2 years in college, and did some cracking sculpture work, but my textiles were a bit shabby Grin

Jolleigh · 14/10/2013 23:44

Anyway, bed time. Talk to you ladies in the morning.

NoMaybeAboutIt · 14/10/2013 23:49

You sound far more artistic than me Jolls! Fine aren't and sculpture? I bow down Halloween Wink

Bionic I'm with you on the wind. Farting like a trooper.

Does Anyone Actually ENJOY Playing With Their Kids?? Love the honesty on this thread..

HotCrossPun · 15/10/2013 07:35

The fecking dog needed out at 5:45 this morning. DP is the deepest sleeper ever and didn't hear him so I had to go out. Angry So I've been sitting awake since then waiting for the world to wake the fuck up!

Prambo There are some things I know I'm going to love doing with the baby:

Arts + Crafts
Cooking
Treasure Hunts
Reading
Singing
Making costumes
Watching animated films
Days out
Board Games, cards etc

And there are some that I know I'm not going to enjoy. (Luckily, these are the things which DP will be good at!)

Building stuff (blocks, lego, doll houses)
Running around (football, dancing, races etc)
Most things that involve the outdoors (Camping, sking, canoeing, horse riding)
Anything that involves danger (Climbing things that they could fall off, running downhill, playing in the sea etc.)

HotCrossPun · 15/10/2013 07:39

Jolls Great to see you back.

I am loving the blanket crocheting (sp?) tradition. I so, so wish I could do something like that. My amazing MIL did try and teach me to knit, but I was so inept that she had to give up. As a last ditch attempt she bought me an 'easy knit kit' from the early learning centre with giant knitting needles (ages 3+) but to no avail Sad

HotCrossPun · 15/10/2013 07:39

What is the scan situ today?

LyraSilvertongue · 15/10/2013 07:42

Mine is at 9.30 Smile

Jolleigh · 15/10/2013 07:45

NoMaybe - the only thing worthy of your praise is the fact that I got through 2 years of fine art course without being able to draw anything that wasn't a naked woman Blush

rescoonetwothree · 15/10/2013 07:48

hot I wake at 4:30 every morning and can't get back to sleep again for a couple of hours - my mum was the same and went into labour at... you guessed it! Love your mil's determination!

lyra good luck today!

Just off to bath to pick up dp's Xmas / bday present I've been waiting to come in for a month or so now - men.

MummyPig24 · 15/10/2013 07:50

pram I posted on that thread. It gives a true picture of how parents really feel rather than us thinking we have to play with kids 24/7. And it's ok to enjoy some things more than others.

I'm going to see my friend today who has breast cancer. She emailed last night to say all her hair has fallen out, I'm looking forward to seeing her but I will have to conceal my shock. I need to take flowers or cake or maybe both!

OwlinaTree · 15/10/2013 07:53

Good luck lyra

Jolleigh · 15/10/2013 07:56

It's good to be back HotCross.

Crocheting is loads easier than knitting I think. If you're completely hopeless with a crochet hook though, maybe try your hand at a rag blanket? Cut up any old unused fabric into large irregular pieces, either hand or machine sew the pieces. When its big enough, trim down into a rough square, with at least an inch spare at the edges. Add any patches now before you add the backing sheet. Sew a backing sheet on, presentation sides inwards. Leave a small gap so you can turn it inside out (presentation sides now on the outside). Sew up the small gap from the outside, being careful to keep the edges pointing into the seam.

With a sewing machine, you can do one of these in a few hours and they last practically forever, getting softer as the years pass. Smile

Jolleigh · 15/10/2013 08:00

Mummy - may I suggest ice cream? I have a friend who lost her hair while being treated for cervical cancer and ice cream and sorbets were extremely popular among her and her chemo friends.

HotCrossPun · 15/10/2013 08:04

Ooooh, good luck Lyra!

Grey I'd be happy going into labour at about that time, hopefully the baby would arrive in time for a sensible bedtime on the first night My MIL is awesome. She is everything I'm not; organised, thorough, impeccably groomed Grin

Mummy I hope you have a nice time at your friend's. There isn't anyway around that initial shock, but it will only last for a few seconds. I'm sure she'll be glad to see you and hear all about your pregnancy (and eat any delicious cake that you bring along!)

MummyPig24 · 15/10/2013 08:24

Joll that's a good idea, I never knew that! She did say she is cold without hair though and needs to go wooly hat shopping!!

Jolleigh · 15/10/2013 08:28

Mummy - I 2nd HotCross. Really isn't a way of glazing over the lack of hair when you see it for the first time. My only advice would be not to let it become the elephant in the room. My friend is quite a brassy individual...she appreciated my initial reaction of 'so, you're bald then. Here, have some hugely OTT earrings'. Then we promptly moved on from the lack of hair convo.

NoMaybeAboutIt · 15/10/2013 09:07

I hope you enjoy seeing your friend Mummyp. I agree, better to speak about it and get it out in the open.

That is impressive Jolls!

Hot knitting really is easy. I taught myself using the Internet. Give it another go!!

Good luck Lyra! Mine gender scan is at 7 tonight. Going to be a long day!!

commsgirl · 15/10/2013 09:25

Maybs so exciting!

Lyra good luck for your scan :)

I get so excited when there's gender news coming up!

Mummyp I hope you have a nice time seeing your friend today.

Jolls good to have you back!

I wish I was even slightly artistic. DP is building the baby a dolls house. My mum and grandma are knitting away. I can't do anything!!

Rockchick1984 · 15/10/2013 09:29

Scan today for me at 11.15. May not be back on for a while after if they are running late as have a class at 12.30 so don't panic!

Mummy second the ice cream suggestion - my ex MIL said that eating when going through chemo was painful, she ate a lot of ice cream, yogurts etc. She had breast cancer twice and fought it off successfully both times.

Jolleigh · 15/10/2013 09:43

It's good to be back Comms. I'm a firm believer that everyone is good at doing something by hand, even if they don't consider themselves artsy fartsy Smile . Have a think!

MummyBee87 · 15/10/2013 09:45

Comms without you, there would be no dolls house or knitting! I think you're doing your bit ;)

BadlyWrittenPoem · 15/10/2013 09:56

Jolls, in my defence I spent Christmas 2010 in hospital (due to hyperemesis) which resulted in DH giving presents to relatives unwrapped and DD1 not getting her presents until January so as a result I've become a bit extreme about Christmas preparation. (Though I confess to being a crazy planner anyway.)

Bionic, it sounds like you have a good consultant there if he was reading your notes that thoroughly.

Pram, I've found that I like some playing with my children but often (particularly when they are younger) I find it rather repetitive and dull. It's great fun when they're small and discover a new thing though and as they get older it's great entertainment to observe. I tend to prefer doing structured/specific activities rather than just playing iyswim. And as mummypig says, it's okay not to enjoy everything and it's good not to pretend that you do/everyone should.

I saw my GP for my ondansetron this morning and am relieved to have got another four weeks of it. I was having dreams that she would be off sick and that there would be a locum who wouldn't prescribe it.
