Shiny new thread, ladies :)

Why is it banned?

IceNoSlice · 08/10/2013 22:24

Evening all.

Yay to pram, Becca and I'm also pleased for those who have just found out they can eat all sorts of yummy stuff they thought was banned! Y'all sound really happy Smile

Can't say I've denied myself much. I stick to one small glass of wine and try to drink decaf unless there's no decent decaf option. But I agree with Lyra and BWP to just be sensible - and if it didn't make me ill before then I'm probably fine now.

I'd not heard that Mr Whippy was banned. But I'm not surprised. I worked in an icecream and gift shop throughout my teens (grew up in a touristy area). Mr Whippy comes from a carton like UHT milk. It is processed through a metal machine. If the machine is not properly cleaned regularly or electricity supply is erratic I can well imagine it could harbour loads of nasty bugs.

IceNoSlice · 08/10/2013 22:25

Obv we cleaned the machine every night and put the special cleaning fluids through the cycle. We didn't poison anyone. Honest.

I think MTB may have meant not to buy your steak from Mr Whippy...Hmm

MTBMummy · 09/10/2013 08:06

Sorry guys didn't mean to leave you hanging on that tidbit, Mr Whippy is out because the nozzles the ice team comes out of are hard to clean and typically can contain all sorts of nasty bacteria. :-(

Although too cold to have one now.

MTBMummy · 09/10/2013 08:09

PS - owl haven't heard anyone not from SA know wht a brown cow is!!! I had one in summer, DP thought I was nuts, but DD loved it. Took me back to my childhood, hasn't had one in easily 10 years

lumpylumps · 09/10/2013 08:29

McClure are out too. mtb forget 2p stick a fiver in then we can all have a glass!!!

pram I reckon injecting might be out too. Maybe ask your mw to clarify that one. [Grin]

lumpylumps · 09/10/2013 08:30

Mcflurry not McClure

Grin not [Grin]

MummyPig24 · 09/10/2013 08:37

What is a brown cow??

LyraSilvertongue · 09/10/2013 09:48

A quick google tells me a brown cow is a cola float. I used to love those as a kid.

I do believe that pasteurised camembert/brie is NOT ok though. It's not to do with the pasturisedyness of soft rinded cheese, it's summat else.

I found this rather helpful summary:

  • All hard cheese incl blues (both pasteurised and unpasteurised) = OK
  • Pasteurised soft cheese without a rind = OK
  • Unpasteurised soft cheese without a rind = NOT OK
  • Soft cheese with a rind (both pasteurised and unpasteurised) = NOT OK
  • Soft blue-veined cheese = NOT OK
FoxMulder · 09/10/2013 10:10

It's way too complicated. Every day you find out that something you thought was not OK now is, and vice versa.

Oh another note, I have stumbled across this maternity Halloween costume! I love Halloween. Not that I'm buying a costume. That would be a bit weird.

Jolleigh · 09/10/2013 10:10

Shock genuinly shocked MTB. No Mr Whippy? I thought it was a really odd thing to ban so assumed you meant not to buy your steak from your ice cream guy! which is a good rule to stick by when you're not pregnant too!

Blockette · 09/10/2013 10:24

Glad everything went well at the scan Pram

I'm not happy that Mr Whippy is on the no list! ... does that mean Mcflurry's are a no too? (opps!)

MTBMummy · 09/10/2013 10:27

I hadn't thought about McFlurry - that said I've never had one... Is that a bad thing?

We used to have brown cows that were milk and cola, the poor man version of a coke float - man I loved those, may force my sister to join me in one this weekend - weekend in London, theatre and dinner (and McD's breakfast) - we typically get each other spa days, but as I'm pregnant she testing me to my favourite things

Rockchick1984 · 09/10/2013 10:40

McFlurry are apparently ok - there's a slight risk of listeria but the machines are cleaned to strict hygiene standards despite what you may think looking at some of the staff so there's minimal chance of issues. Basically, safer than Mr Whippy, not as safe as solid ice cream!!

Beccadugs · 09/10/2013 11:07

I'm a bit gutted about Mr Whippy!

Also, poo about the Camembert! I'm not stopping eating it though. Not had a problem so far, and I doubt it would make me as sick as I was in the early days, and the baby has survived that!

IceNoSlice · 09/10/2013 11:56

Didn't we cover Brie/Camembert to death in thread 2 or 3? I think it was Lyra who pointed out that no-one, preg or not, has got listeria from Brie in the UK in over 20 years.

Anyway, I'm still eating them. And prambo hates stinky cheese so doesn't give a rats' ass! I think BWP had it right when she said to just check NHS is you're concerned and make your own choices.

FoxMulder · 09/10/2013 12:05

It seems that all the advice (except not having heaps of booze) is on the over-cautious side.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 09/10/2013 12:05

The cheeses/pates listeria advice appears to come from a scare in the late eighties (around a similar time to the big salmonella scare). But more people get killed in car accidents each year than even catch salmonella or listeria and there is no evidence that either are dangerous in pregnancy due to how rare they are so personally I don't consider the risk high enough to worry about.

FoxMulder · 09/10/2013 12:09

Isn't pate also to do with the vitamin A content?

Oh jesus, this could go on forever.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 09/10/2013 12:49

Yes, the vitamin A content thing is about liver pate whereas the listeria thing is about all pates. Although personally I ignore that bit as I did nutritional analysis of my diet and found that even if I had liver pate sandwiches every day and had my highest liver content dinner (I don;t eat straight liver but I use it instead of mince in spag bol and chilli) every day I would still be below the limit for retinol intake (retinol being the form of vitamin A that can be harful of you have too much).

faithfulandtruthful · 09/10/2013 12:51

Paté contains liver, liver contains high vit A, too much vit A is bad for baby. If you can find ot there is a french paté called Rillettes which does not contain liver (which makes I superior in my eyes), its delish and preggers safe.

F&T

FoxMulder · 09/10/2013 12:55

It's not often I eat pate anyway, but it'd be nice to know I could occasionally. I don't eat liver atall. My mum told me that when she was pregnant she was told by the mw to eat liver at least once a week!
